Knocknagoshel author Donald P. Murphy has launched his latest work, Matt the Thresher: Go West Young Man, a powerful new novel inspired by the true hardships, hopes, and heartbreaks of Irish emigration. Murphy is no stranger to literary success. His previous publication, Knocknagoshel: History of Past and Present 1890–2023, became a remarkable bestseller, with 1,700 copies sold across the USA, England, and Ireland. Only 300 copies remain, with 200 destined for Birmingham and London, and the final 100 held in Kerry for local readers and returning emigrants.
The new novel centres on Hugh McCann, better known as Matt the Thresher—a name made famous by Tipperary writer Charles Kickham in Knocknagow (The Homes of Tipperary).
Murphy’s fictionalised account follows the young Kerryman as he emigrates to Chicago in 1947, where he becomes a star full-back for the Kerry team in Gaelic Park.
But the bright lights come at a cost. Though he finds initial success, Matt is eventually drawn into the darker side of life in the Windy City. In a dramatic turn, he is tragically killed during a violent confrontation between the Irish and Italian mafia. His teammates in Gaelic Park honour him with an oak coffin, where he lies in state for two days before being flown home to Shannon and finally laid to rest in Knockane Cemetery, Knocknagoshel. Large crowds gathered to pay their respects, with the local GAA forming a guard of honour as Hugh McCann returned to the soil he longed for—another poignant reminder of the toll emigration has taken on generations of Irish families.
The introduction piece to this book has been written by Mr Dick Spring, Former Minister for Foreign Affairs. This certainly enhances the book. Dick has been requested to be MC at the launch of this book in Knocknagoshel Community Centre in mid December.

Christmas in Tralee officially begins on Saturday, 29th November, as Kerry County Council brings back Festive Flair in the Square, a muchloved seasonal celebration set to fill the town with music, colour, and community spirit. Running from 3pm to 6pm, the event promises a lively afternoon of family entertainment, festive performances and the eagerly awaited switching-on of Tralee’s Christmas lights. This year marks the start of a monthlong programme of Christmas events, including markets, parades, live music, Santa appearances and late-night shopping — ensuring the town is buzzing with festive activity right through December.
Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Terry O’Brien, spoke of the event’s importance: “The turning on of Tralee’s Christmas
lights is always one of the most special moments of the year. It brings families, friends and neighbours together and ignites the true spirit of Christmas in our town. I look forward to lighting up Tralee with everyone gathered in The Square.”
A special highlight of this year’s celebration will be the presence of Brendan O’Brien, Chairperson of Tralee Tidy Towns, who will serve as Guest of Honour. His invitation recognises Tralee’s remarkable achievement in being named Ireland’s Best Large Town in the National Tidy Towns Awards. The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael Foley, attended Tralee Library on Thursday evening to launch the 2025 editions of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society’s annual Journal and Kerry Magazine. Both publications are now available in shops countywide and online.
The 2025 Journal features a rich mix of research, covering topics such as the O’Connells of south Kerry, bog tracks in north Kerry, the Killarney railway line, Labour and the revolution in Kerry, and the lives of
Denis Shine Lawlor and Brian Kelly.
This year’s Kerry Magazine offers a wide selection of short historical pieces, including accounts of religious fervour in Dingle in 1846, the O’Rahilly of Ballylongford and the Clashmealcon Caves executions. Cllr Foley praised both editors, Edel Codd and Tony Bergin, noting the publications’ long-standing popularity among readers at home and abroad. Both are available in hard and soft copy at kerryhistory.ie and local bookshops.

Dr Pieter van der Merwe answers

What is childhood asthma?
Childhood asthma is a chronic condition in which the airways become in amed and narrow, making it di cult for children to breathe. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Many children with asthma experience symptoms that come and go, often triggered by speci c environmental or physical factors.
Q: "I know i need to be more active but body pains are holding me back! What can I do?" Maura,
Kevin says... What would work well is manual therapy and resistance training to give you more pain relief.

What causes asthma in children?
The World Health Organization recommends that adults perform at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, plus two or more sessions of muscle-strengthening exercise. Yet for many people living with pain, even starting can feel impossible.
Asthma has no single cause. Instead, it develops through a combination of genetics and environmental exposures. Children whose parents have asthma or allergies are at higher risk. Common triggers include respiratory infections, pollen, pet dander, dust mites, cold air, exercise, and air pollution. In some children, strong emotions such as laughter or crying can also provoke symptoms.
How is asthma diagnosed?
That’s where manual therapy plays a crucial supporting role. Skilled hands-on treatment helps to reduce protective muscle tension, improve joint mobility, and restore movement confidence—allowing clients to begin resistance training safely and effectively.
A doctor will review the child’s medical history, ask about symptoms, and possibly perform lung function tests such as a peak ow. For younger children who may not be able to complete these tests, doctors often rely on symptoms, response to treatment, and family history to make a diagnosis.
Recent studies show that progressive strength training can reduce pain intensity, improve function, and boost mood, even in those with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Combining this with tailored manual therapy creates the ideal foundation for movement without fear.
How is childhood asthma treated?
Treatment focuses on controlling symptoms and preventing are-ups. Physicians typically prescribe quick-relief inhalers for sudden symptoms and daily controller medications—such as inhaled corticosteroids—to reduce airway in ammation. Creating an asthma action plan helps families know what to do during di erent levels of symptom severity.
At KP Therapy, we guide clients from pain towards performance—using evidence-based manual techniques, education, and gradual loading strategies that meet WHO activity guidelines. The goal isn’t just pain relief—it’s restoring resilience and confidence in your body again.
Can children live normal, active lives with asthma?
— Kevin Prunty, KP Therapy, Tralee Specialists in the Neuromuscular approach, Injury Rehabilitation & Movement Education
Yes. With proper management, most children with asthma can participate in school, sports, and all typical childhood activities. Avoiding known triggers, taking medications as prescribed, and monitoring symptoms can signi cantly improve quality of life.
Q: I regularly do 5 mins of stretches before exercising ...is this enough? Conor, Ardfert
Kevin says:
If you want to improve your flexibility, it’s not just about stretching more—it’s about using your end ranges and strengthening your full movement.

When you move into an end range, that’s the point where your body naturally feels tight or wants to pull back. Most people dip into that range for a second and then come out again. But real progress happens when you slow down, breathe, and spend time there. This helps your muscles, joints, and nervous system learn that the position is safe. Over time, the tightness reduces, and your usable range grows.
The second part is just as important: strength through full range of motion. If you only stretch but never train strength at those angles, the new flexibility won’t last. By adding light resistance while you move from deep to long positions, you build control, stability, and confidence. This makes the new range feel strong, not vulnerable.
Put simply:
Spend time where you’re tight. Strengthen the movement from start to finish. This combination creates flexible, strong, resilient bodies—not just bendy ones.
Remember... Flexibility: Spend Time at End Range, Build Strength Through Full Range

Siamsa Tíre is proud to announce Roots, a new artist residency programme launching in 2026, dedicated to supporting professional artists across all disciplines. Whether working in theatre, dance, music, literature, visual arts, circus, digital innovation, or interdisciplinary practice, Roots provides the time, space, and resources needed to cultivate new ideas in a nurturing, artist-centred environment.
The residency reflects a dual purpose: to provide stability and support for artists as they create new work, and to strengthen connections between artistic practice, community, and place.
Participants will benefit from dedicated development spaces, in-house support, access to
resources, work-in-progress sharing opportunities, and a financial bursary. Three bursaries will be offered in 2026, tailored to career stage: early-career (1–2 years), midcareer (2–5 years), and established artists (5+ years).
Roots is grounded in Siamsa Tíre’s commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). Applications are especially encouraged from artists of all backgrounds, identities, and abilities, as well as those whose work engages with EDI and sustainability themes. Sustainability is central to the programme, with guidance available for artists seeking to integrate environmentally conscious practices.
Angela Ryan Whyte, CEO of Siamsa Tíre, explains: “Roots is about

giving artists the freedom to push into new territory while staying grounded in the world around them. We want to support work that is brave, curious, and reflective of the diversity of contemporary Ireland, creating a space where artists can take risks, develop ideas, and engage meaningfully with cultural conversations.”
Applications are open to professional artists who can demonstrate an active practice. Applicants must submit a CV, a 2–3 page proposal, and supporting materials. Applications open 1 December 2025 and close 5 January 2026. Details are available at www. siamsatire.com/artists/roots.
Kerry FC has strengthened its attacking options ahead of the 2026 season with the news that record goal scorer Ryan Kelliher has signed a new multi-year deal, while experienced striker Cian Murphy joins the club on a pre-contract agreement.
Kelliher, from Killarney, has been a standout performer since Kerry FC’s debut season in 2023. Despite missing much of the 2025 campaign with an ACL injury, the 24-year-old has already made 81 appearances and scored 32 goals for the club. Before his injury, he was in strong form, netting three goals in eight First Division games. Now progressing well in his recovery,
Kelliher said he “can’t wait to be back out playing and scoring goals in front of the fans in 2026.”
Manager Colin Healy welcomed the news, noting Kelliher’s proven scoring record and describing him as “a major threat up front when fully fit.”
Healy has also added significant experience with the signing of Cian Murphy, who arrives after impressive spells with Cork City and Cobh Ramblers. Murphy has 167 senior appearances and 30 goals to his name, including 34 Premier Division games. A two-time First Division winner, he brings valuable leadership and attacking strength to the squad.

Both athletes recently shared updates on their training and goals as they prepare for the year ahead.
1. How do you stay motivated during winter training?

“I prefer to train with a group so that I have someone to keep me accountable, especially in the winter months when it’s often wet and dark when I’m training.”
2. How do you use Manor West Leisure Centre in your training?
“Having access to the gym is great and allows me flexibility around my studies. I’ve also found myself using the pool for recovery sessions or to loosen out after a session.”
3. What is your focus going into 2026?
“My goal going into 2026 is to recover from injury and continue training for the coming season.”
1. How do you stay motivated in the cold, dark evenings of winter?
“The short break between GAA seasons helps. My focus is already on building for 2026, and I enjoy having more freedom in my training with a mix of running, swimming and weights.”
2. Which facility do you use the most, and why?
“I’m using the weights room the most. The off-season lets me lift heavier to build strong foundations and help prevent injuries.”
3. What is your short-term focus heading into 2026?
“To build robustness in the gym and avoid injury. The big goal is to get back to Croke Park and win the Intermediate Camogie All-Ireland Final.”
Leisure Centre & Gym Manager Catriona Cantillon praised the ambassadors’ dedication: “Natasha and Áine are fantastic role models, showing commitment, balance and resilience. We’re proud to support their journeys and encourage everyone to follow their progress. An Irish dad calls his son in London the day before Christmas Eve and says, “I hate to ruin your day but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing.”
Long “Dad, what are you talking about?” the son screams.
“We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer,” the father says. “We’re sick of each other and I’m sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Leeds and tell her.”
The son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. “Like heck they’re getting divorced!”she shouts, “I’ll take care of this!”
She calls Ireland immediately, and screams at her father, “You are NOT getting divorced. Don’t do a single thing until I get there. I’m calling my brother back, and we’ll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?” and hangs up.The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. “Sorted! They’re coming for Christmas –and they’re paying their own way”

Kia’s first fully electric van, the PV5, has been named the 2026 International Van of the Year, marking a historic first for both Kia and any Korean manufacturer. The award was announced at the IVOTY Gala during SOLUTRANS 2025 in Lyon, France, following votes from commercial vehicle journalists across 26 countries.
The PV5 Cargo is already proving its real-world capability, holding a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the longest distance travelled by a light-duty electric van with full payload on a single charge—an impressive 693.38 kilometres. Based on Kia’s Electric-Global Modular Platform for Service (E-GMP.S), it offers up to 416 km of all-electric range (WLTP) and a payload capacity of up to 790 kg, with DC fast charging from 10 to 80% in under 30 minutes. McElligott’s Kia Tralee, one of only eight PBV Kia dealers in Ireland, expects to have this award-winning van available in mid-December. The PV5 Cargo will launch in Ireland from €33,230 ex-VAT, offering businesses an all-electric, practical, and versatile solution for modern transport needs.
The PV5 comes in Cargo and Passenger versions, with further variants—including Chassis Cab, short-wheelbase Cargo, and High Roof models—planned from 2026. The PV5 represents Kia’s commitment to innovation in the commercial vehicle sector, combining sustainability, practicality, and award-winning design. For businesses in Kerry interested in exploring Ireland’s newest all-electric van, McElligott’s Kia Tralee is ready to provide information, test drives, and expert advice on the PV5.

Pig’s Lane in Killarney has earned a ‘Highly Commended’ honour in the Best Cocktail Experience category at the 2025 Food & Wine Restaurant of the Year Awards, held at the Shelbourne Hotel in association with Rémy Martin. The awards, one of the key events in Ireland’s culinary calendar, celebrate excellence in restaurants, cafés, wine experiences and cocktail programmes nationwide.
The recognition places Pig’s Lane second only to the acclaimed Bar 1661 in Dublin and adds to an already impressive year of
achievements for the venue. Earlier in 2025, Pig’s Lane won Best Designed Bar at the Bar of the Year Awards and received 1 Pin from the prestigious Pinnacle Guide—an honour shared by only two other Irish bars, Bar 1661 and The Sidecar at The Westbury.
Founder Gemma Ring said, “It’s an honour to receive this recognition from Food & Wine Ireland. To be acknowledged among the country’s finest bars is incredibly special for us.” For more information, visit www. pigslane.com.

On Sunday, Kingdom Wheelblasters, Kerry’s multi-sport club for children with physical disabilities, hosted the second round of IWA-Sport’s 2025/26 Wheelchair Basketball Junior Blitz at MTU Tralee. Children aged 5–16 from clubs around the country participated in a full day of wheelchair basketball at the Kerry Sports Academy.
The club aims to inspire young people across Kerry to get involved in sports in a fun, safe environment while developing physical and social skills. Kingdom Wheelblasters offers
a variety of Para and adapted sports, including wheelchair basketball, with club nights every Tuesday from 6–7pm at MTU Tralee. Chairperson Laura Sheehy says the club provides a level playing field where children can make friends, try new skills, and enjoy team sport.
