Angelina and Tom are married with three children one of whom has special needs and they are wondering about making Wills.
Wills are really important to make everything easier for our relatives left behind when we pass on. It is particularly important for the married family unit where there are young children as the Will can provide a structure for managing assets after a loved one’s death for the benefit of the whole family.
November being the month of all souls is the month where the Law Society encourages everybody to think about doing Wills. They have collaborated with rip. ie to give further information on making Wills on that website. https://rip.ie/legal-and-financial-advice. Usually, a married couple will attend with their solicitor together and make matching or back-to-back wills. These wills will usually leave everything to each other and appoint each other executor. This is very important as otherwise if there are assets in either party sole name if there is no will it goes 2/3 to the spouse and 1/3 to the children and if they are underage the spouse may have difficulty accessing the asset.
The married couple will then go on to provide what would happen in a common accident situation or if they do not survive each other. They will appoint executors/trustees who will manage assets for the benefit of the young children. They may provide extra provision for the child with special needs. They will also set out who will be the testamentary Guardian or Guardians of the children who will look after the day-to-day custody of the children. It is useful to consider also whether the parents wish to make specific bequests to charities or loved ones. Often after any specific bequests they can provide that their assets go into a trust managed by their executors and trustees for the benefit of the infant children until they reach a certain age e.g. 18, 23 or even 35 years of age depending on the extent of assets. They may provide for a discretionary trust for the benefit of the child with special needs ongoing into the future.
For married couples it is also important to look at their property and who owns it as if they put it into joint names, it can go automatically to the other spouse on either of their deaths providing for a much easier transfer on of property after their death that may prevent the need for any Grant of Probate. In relation to making wills, it is a good idea to get legal advice as it can ensure the Will to have the effect you wish, make sure it is legally compliant and that it is as tax effective as possible.

€5,000.00 EURO to the Kerry
The well-known food and retail destination on the outskirts of Tralee — formerly Ballyseedy Garden Centre and more recently Fairtree Village — has been acquired by new owners and has just relaunched under the name Boyles of Ballyseedy.
The site, long recognised as a favourite stop for shoppers and families, has continued to operate as normal in recent years, with established businesses such as Meadows & Byrne and the Edinburgh Woollen Mill remaining in place.
The Boyle family, who run several home, DIY and building supply outlets across Kerry, are now taking over the landmark property. Adrian
Boyle, speaking on behalf of the new ownership, said the aim is to bring renewed energy and long-term stability to the destination.
“With this new name, our goal is to introduce a refreshed identity while maintaining consistency and supporting sustained growth on the site,” he said. “We want to build on what people already value — the friendly welcome, the sense of community, and the experiences that bring families and friends together.”
The new owners also confirmed that seasonal events, local partnerships and support for Irish makers and small businesses will continue to be a central part of the destination’s future.

Knocknagoshel author Donald P. Murphy has launched his latest work, Matt the Thresher: Go West Young Man, a powerful new novel inspired by the true hardships, hopes, and heartbreaks of Irish emigration. Murphy is no stranger to literary success. His previous publication, Knocknagoshel: History of Past and Present 1890–2023, became a remarkable bestseller, with 1,700 copies sold across the USA, England, and Ireland. Only 300 copies remain, with 200 destined for Birmingham and London, and the final 100 held in Kerry for local readers and returning emigrants.
The new novel centres on Hugh McCann, better known as Matt the Thresher—a name made famous by Tipperary writer Charles Kickham in Knocknagow (The Homes of Tipperary).
Murphy’s fictionalised account follows the young Kerryman as he emigrates to Chicago in 1947, where he becomes a star full-back for the Kerry team in Gaelic Park.
But the bright lights come at a cost. Though he finds initial success, Matt is eventually drawn into the darker side of life in the Windy City. In a dramatic turn, he is tragically killed during a violent confrontation between the Irish and Italian mafia. His teammates in Gaelic Park honour him with an oak coffin, where he lies in state for two days before being flown home to Shannon and finally laid to rest in Knockane Cemetery, Knocknagoshel. Large crowds gathered to pay their respects, with the local GAA forming a guard of honour as Hugh McCann returned to the soil he longed for—another poignant reminder of the toll emigration has taken on generations of Irish families.
The introduction piece to this book has been written by Mr Dick Spring, Former Minister for Foreign Affairs. This certainly enhances the book. Dick has been requested to be MC at the launch of this book in Knocknagoshel Community Centre in mid December.

A new policy document titled A Framework for Integration— researched and written over the past year by Club Vice-Chairman Billy Ryle—was launched on Tuesday night, 18th November, at the Austin Stacks Club in Connolly Park.
At the event, Billy formally presented copies of the document to Éamonn O’Reilly, Chairman of Austin Stacks Hurling & Football Club, and Melissa Maguire, Chairperson of Austin Stacks LGFA Club. Additional copies were made available to those attending.
The document strongly recommends that Austin Stacks Ladies Gaelic Football Association Club and Austin Stacks Hurling & Football Club pursue a full and equal amalgamation early in 2026.
While official national integration of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association and the Camogie Association into the GAA is not scheduled until 2027, the report argues that a one-year preparatory phase would greatly support a
smooth transition for the two Austin Stacks organisations.
It advises that members of both clubs convene for a joint meeting as soon as possible in 2026.
At that meeting, a formal motion could then be tabled proposing that the two clubs merge fully for the 2026 season, ensuring readiness for complete integration the following year.
Billy stressed that the document is advisory rather than binding.
He encouraged members to carefully review its recommendations, noting that significant organisational change is approaching and that only clubs who plan ahead will be positioned to adapt successfully in 2027.

T.D., has officially opened the new Arrivals Hall at Kerry Airport, marking a major milestone in the airport’s multi-million-euro redevelopment. Although the facility first welcomed passengers in March 2025, the formal opening took place at 10.30am today.
The modernised Arrivals Hall features upgraded Immigration and Customs areas, a larger baggage belt, improved restroom facilities and a bright, spacious public foyer. It forms part of a €5 million two-phase redevelopment project that also delivered an extended Departures Area, which opened in July 2025. The Departures upgrade includes increased seating capacity, an additional boarding gate, a new smoking area, enhanced catering
options, improved toilet facilities and a Quiet Space, all designed to elevate the passenger experience. Work began in September 2024 and was completed on schedule. Speaking at the opening, An Taoiseach praised the airport’s evolution since its original launch in 1969, noting its vital role as an economic engine for the region. He highlighted the importance of continued State investment in supporting rural Ireland, sustaining jobs and enabling growth.

The Climate Action Summer Works Scheme (which was previously named the Summer Works Scheme) places a strong emphasis on sustainability. Schools can now undertake measures such as insulation upgrades, LED lighting installation, EV charger provision, bike rack facilities to support active travel and other climatefocused works alongside traditional maintenance.
Minister Foley said: “I’m really pleased to have received confirmation that 20 climate action summer works scheme projects
have been approved in Kerry. These projects are essential to the maintenance, upkeep and upgrading of school facilities. The diversity of projects to be completed is wide

Kerry Football Club is delighted to confirm that local star Sean O’Connell has signed a new deal ahead of the 2026 SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division season. Recently turned 21, O’Connell is one of the club’s most established players and becomes the latest key figure to re-sign at Mounthawk Park. Since the club’s debut campaign, he has been ever-present, making 108 appearances and becoming one of only three players to surpass the 100-game milestone. In 2025, he featured in 37 matches and was part of every matchday squad, contributing several assists and scoring a memorable goal direct from a corner against Athlone Town. Speaking after signing, O’Connell said he is “delighted” to commit for another season and is eager to get back in front of the home fans. Tralee Rotary Club proudly hosted the Zone 9 Final of the Rotary Youth Leadership Development competition this week, bringing together four outstanding young people from Kerry and Limerick who had progressed through a demanding series of interviews at school and regional level. The competition, one of Rotary’s most respected youth initiatives, seeks to identify students who demonstrate excellent communication skills, initiative, civic awareness, and the potential to become future leaders. The finalists—Brian Reidy from CBS Tralee, Amina Lily Ahmed Costelloe from Coláiste Chiaráin in Limerick, Nicole Forde from Ard Scoil Mhuire in Limerick, and Tommy O’Connor from Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra in Rathmore—took part in an in-depth interview session with the judging panel. Following an engaging and
thoughtful discussion, Amina Lily Ahmed Costelloe was chosen as the overall winner and will now advance to the next stage of the national competition. Her success will open the door to leadership development opportunities, as well as a visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where students meet policymakers and gain insights into European decision-making.
Speaking after the event, Tralee Rotary Club President Dr. Daniel Onyewkere praised all four finalists and noted how their maturity, social awareness, and ambition reflect a bright future for community leadership. He commended Amina for her empathy, eloquence, and strong sense of purpose.

The much-loved Kellihers Toys Upstairs Toy Appeal has officially launched for the Christmas season, once again supporting Adapt Kerry Women’s Refuge in Tralee. Running from now until Christmas, the appeal aims to ensure that every child staying in the refuge experiences the joy and excitement of finding a gift under the tree on Christmas morning.

Cara Credit Union’s annual Art Competition once again put the spotlight on creativity and community spirit, as over 300 people gathered in the Manor West Hotel, Tralee, for a vibrant and heartwarming Prize Giving Night. Families, teachers, and young artists from across the Credit Union’s common bond area came together to celebrate the winners of Stage One of this much-loved competition. This year’s theme, “The Future Is…”, sparked imagination across all age groups, from the youngest entrants right up to adult participants. The result was an inspiring display of
originality, colour, and vision— showcasing just how strong artistic talent is in the local community. Speaking at the event, Siobhan Donnelly, Marketing Manager at Cara Credit Union, expressed her delight at the turnout and the dedication shown by schools and families. She noted that Prize Giving Night is always a highlight of the year, celebrating the hard work of students, parents, teachers, and schools. She also confirmed that all first-place winners will now proudly represent Cara Credit Union at Stage Two, the regional Chapter round. Siobhan went on to highlight Cara
Credit Union’s commitment to young members, including initiatives such as their Junior Mastercard® Debit Card for members aged 12 to 16, which helps young people learn valuable budgeting and money management skills. Supporting youth, she said, remains a core focus—because “the future truly is in safe hands.”
Among the talented winners were Bill Diarmuid Fitzgerald from Scoil Mhuire Killorglin and Dylan Delaney from Sliabh a Mhadra in the under-7 categories; Jayden Molyneaux of Kilflynn NS and Liam O’Driscoll
of Killury NS in the 8–10 age group; Dylan O’Carroll and Emma Costello, both representing Sliabh a Mhadra, in the 11–13 categories; and Ógie O’Keeffe and Ethan Kelly from Causeway Comprehensive in the 14–17 group. Adult winners included Mary Reidy from Causeway Comprehensive and Simon Clarke from the National Learning Network, while the group award went to Fionn O’Regan, Jack Barry, Jackson Valentine, Luke Walsh, and Alex Horan from Killahan NS.

The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) has launched its Annual Christmas Appeal, warning that requests for help will exceed 250,000 this year. The 2025 campaign theme, “The Wonder of Christmas,” highlights the rising number of families wondering how they will manage essentials such as food, heating and presents this December.
SVP National President Teresa Ryan said parents across Ireland are under growing pressure. “By the end of October, requests for help were already up 7% on last year. Too many families are struggling to cover the basics. Our Appeal invites the public to share the wonder of Christmas by helping us support those who need it most.”
While the recent Budget has eased some burdens, SVP reports that
rising living costs continue to affect one-parent families, low-income workers, people with disabilities, carers and those in insecure housing.
How SVP Will Help This Christmas
• Immediate essentials: €41m in food vouchers and direct supports for households facing poverty.
• Warm homes: €6m in fuel assistance to help families unable to heat their homes.
• Education: €5m for schoolbooks, transport, devices and fees.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended the Club History session at Strand Road on Saturday. The response was overwhelming, with the event running well past the scheduled finish time of 1.00pm due to the volume of stories, memorabilia, and memories shared. The dedication shown by those who searched attics, garages, and cupboards to uncover items
from the club’s past has provided an invaluable foundation for the ongoing history project. These contributions will help ensure the club’s story is recorded and preserved for future generations.
Church Gate Collection

While the team narrowly missed out on the County League title, they enjoyed a strong season, winning both the Tralee and St Brendan District titles and the 2025 Central League. Mentors: Eoghan Ó Gealbháin, Ger Hobbert, Richie Conway, Dan Ahern and Donal Corcoran.

U17A: Hard luck to The Green U
17s who lost to St. Brendan’s College in the Frewen Cup semifinal.
U19A: Tralee CBS defeated Pobalscoil Chaiseal Mumhan in the Corn Uí Mhuirí with strong performances from club players. Mercy Mounthawk lost their fixture but now look ahead to the next challenge, with several Rock representatives involved.

Bingo
Bingo takes place every Monday at 8pm with cash prizes, Split the Bucket and raffles. Over 18s only. Bus available on 087 2817577.

Race Night 2025
The annual Race Night will be held on Friday 21st November and is a vital fundraiser supporting over 600 young players and club facilities. Cash prizes for each race and €1,000 for the Na Gaeil Gold Cup winner. A limited number of horses remain for purchase.
Mass for deceased members takes place Wednesday 19th November at 7.30pm in the clubhouse. All welcome.

The club requires experienced weekend bar staff. CVs can be emailed or dropped to the clubhouse after 6pm.

The clubhouse hall is available for event hire. Weekly cycle from the club every Saturday at 9am. A 45 card game takes place Wednesdays at 9pm.
Ballincollig 85 – Warriors 82 Garvey’s Tralee Warriors lost out late to Ballincollig after leading by six with three minutes remaining in Round 7 of the Super League. In a tight game with multiple lead changes, Ballincollig finished stronger, outscoring the Warriors 12-3 in the final minutes. Jordan Perkins (28) and Iggy Hunte (21) starred for Tralee, while Latrell Jossell and Lavatious Mitchell led Ballincollig with 24 each.
Warriors suffered another narrow defeat in Round 8, this time at the buzzer away to EJ Sligo All Stars. Tralee led for most of the final quarter but late free throws saw Sligo snatch victory. Perkins (26), Hunte (23) and Daniel Jokubaitis (16) impressed for Warriors, while Etyle-Rock (26) and Noel (19) led the hosts.
Warriors return home to face Killester on Saturday at the Kerry Sports Academy at 7pm, the first of two clashes at the venue ahead of their National Cup quarter-final two weeks later.
