A giant , thats all I can think of , a giant of a heart ! Met Pat first in a work capacity in 2013 when we took over The Tralee Advertiser . I had known him from before this between Killarney , Tralee Chamber of Commerce , my own lads playing sport and oh yeah ...the Cinema ! But it was only working with him every week for nearly 10 years that Pats true attributes became known to me . So knowledgeable... and not only about Sport ( that was on another level altogether ! ) and the guy knew everyone and smiled everytime he met someone . Week in week out he would duly digest all the various club notes that were sent in to The Tralee Advertiser along with his own notes and present us with Padraig Harnetts take on what was happening in Sport in the
Padraig Harnett.... Rest in Peace.
greater Tralee area that week ...as well as the Kerry team !!! It was a 'Must Read '. He loved all sports ...yes you could say he had favourites but he was passionate about all as far as I could see ...Schoolboys , Underage , Basketball , Soccer , Gaa ...didnt matter ..he consumed them all ! Kerry could have no better Voice of sport than this gentle giant ..what he did for so many codes . Never a man to see you stuck , Padraig would often lend a hand to us delivering the Tralee Advertiser on the odd Friday , which allowed us the odd breakaway , comfort in knowing that there was a good man at the helm of our delivery day . I have fond memories of our catch up coffees... particularly every Christmas , usually at the Rose Hotel . Also during the start of Covid in Corrib Service
Station ..( where everyone met ! ) ...me sitting on my hands while all my customers and business were on pause as was I ! ...and Padraig? .... with no sports happening ? Well he was busy helping out Meals on Wheels and Vincent De Paul making sure all those less fortunate were taken care of ...Yes a giant Heart as well as a giant Voice .. Aran Jumpers Soar Due to Banshees Of Inisherin Movie
Irish fashion is having a Hollywood moment right now with the release of Martin McDonagh’s new movie The Banshees of Inisherin currently in cinemas. The film, starring Irish actors Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell is already receiving rave reviews from critics worldwide and is putting Ireland and Irish traditional fashion back on the map in the same way as hit show Peaky Blinders did when it was first released.
Irish fashion company “The Sweater Shop”, which has shops in Dublin, Kilkenny and Galway, as well as an online shop, have reported a sales spike in classic Irish clothing such as Aran knit sweaters, since the release of the movie and the publicity surrounding it.
Speaking of the increase in sales, Laura Byrne, one of the family members behind the business, said; “The Sweater Shop is delighted with the attention The Banshees of Inisherin has brought to quality Irish clothing and fabrics. We’ve noted a 50% increase in sales of Aran jumpers and our merino wool jumpers both online and in our shops over the past two weeks or so, compared to this time last year. Our website shows that people are searching for classic items like Grandfather shirts, capes in greens and reds, and chunky knit Aran sweaters with data showing a huge spike in this since the hype around this film first started. We are sending a lot of online orders to America where the movie came out last week too. It’s wonderful to see a newfound appreciation of Irish designs and fabrics that are being recognised because of this movie.”

MORTGAGE RULES CHANGES
WELCOME BUT TOO LITTLE AND FAR TOO LATE !
"Brokers Ireland welcomed this weeks announcement by the Central Bank of Ireland of its intention to change the loan-to-income threshold from 3.5 times gross salary to four times for first-time buyers . The organisation said reducing the loan-to-value threshold for second and subsequent buyers from 20pc to 10pc, in line with first-time buyers, was logical, something that Brokers Ireland has been calling on the Central Bank to do for some considerable time."
Tommy says Wednesday, last week , affected first time buyers in more ways than one. Early in the day it was announced that an eviction ban was coming in on rental homes.
How is this good news for 1st time buyers? The good news for 1st time buyers and unfortunately the bad news for tenants comes in the
form of unintended consequence
- Small landlords have seen this as unnecessary interferance and another measure which sees them losing control of their property and ultimately has led to landlords deciding to sell their properties at the next available opportunity. Simply put this decision will increase the housing stock coming to market and most will be in the range of typical 1st time buyer budgets. More stock is good news for 1st time buyers. In 24 hours I have had 3 seperate landlords instruct me to sell 3 homes which were becoming available to rent at the end of November and early December (Homes where tenants gave notice to quit I will add , not the landlord!).
In the space of 5 hours the news came through that the Central Bank would relax criteria around mortgages. On the face of it this should be celebrated by 1st time buyers however when the time comes that first time buyer go to
view homes with the higher approval amount it is likely that the same cohort of 1st time buyers will be bidding on the same homes which they would have been bidding on regardless but instead all 1st time buyers will be armed with more funds and in most cases they will bid to the highest level possible or come close at least.
Does this mean that House A will be sold to a first time buyer for say €195,000 as opposed to €185,000 or €190,000. I believe so.
The one scenario where the higher approval amount may benefit a 1st
time buyer is in the case where they are competing with an investor for a home purchase as in many instances 1st time buyers have narrowly missed out by a small sum to an investor.
However when it comes to a 1st time buyer vs another 1st time buyer competing for a home there can still only be one winner, BUT it will be a winner who will likely have paid more due to this change in criteria. As the saying goes "If everyone has more....nobody has more!"
Minister Foley welcomes funding of €28,000 for Kerry’s Men’s Sheds
Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley welcomes the announcement of €28,000 in funding for 14 Men’s Sheds groups across Kerry.
The initiative will see grants of €2,000 provided to over 400 Men’s Sheds nationwide to assist them with running costs such as electricity or insurance bills.
Minister Foley said: “This
funding will provide welcome support for these 14 organisations who continue to provide an extremely positive and creative outlet for men in Kerry. This funding can be used to cover running costs or to carry out improvement works and is a further endorsement of the wonderful contribution Men’s Sheds make to their local communities.”

Two New Kingdom Of Kerry
Two parts of the Kingdom of Kerry Greenways network were officially opened last week by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton TD. The 16km Listowel to Abbeyfeale Greenway and the 11km Tralee to Fenit Greenway, which follow the route of former railway lines, are now fully open to walkers and cyclists.The new projects in Kerry were funded by the Department of Transport and delivered by Kerry County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland. In a joint statement, Cathaoirleach of Listowel Municipal District, Cllr Aoife Thornton and the Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Mikey Sheehy, said: “This is a historic day for the county. The opening of new two greenway routes not only enhances the reputation of Kerry as a prime location for walking and cycling infrastructure, it also greatly enhances our tourism offering as well as the local economy.
“We can look forward in anticipation to the development of a new link between these two greenways as well as the development of the South Kerry Greenway and the linking of the various routes which
will enable users to enjoy the county’s beautiful landscape,” they said.
Minister of State Hildegarde Naughton said: “We have allocated approximately €60m for Greenways alone this year as well as over €285m in walking and cycling infrastructure
around the country to enable people to safely choose to walk or cycle instead of using the car.
Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell said: “I want to acknowledge the support of the Department of Transport in funding these greenways and I want to

Demons back to haunt Warriors
With just a single League win to their name, Garvey’s Tralee Warriors need to regroup and regather after suffering their second defeat at home this season to UCC Demons( 85 -89) on Friday night and their fourth loss in total so far. The Warriors have produced nothing like the form they displayed last season when they captured
both National titles and maintained an unbeaten record at home.

Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley has welcomed €8.2 million in funding to support Rural communities and enterprises across Kerry under the LEADER programme.
Interested groups are now being invited to apply for funding under the LEADER programme which will support thousands of locally led rural development and

Encouraging groups from across Kerry to apply, Minister Foley said, "I'm delighted to see this significant allocation of leader funding which will support local development and enterprise projects across the county over the next five years.

A MAGICIAN WAS WORKING ON A CRUISE SHIP
Since the audience was different each week, the magician did the same tricks over and over again. There was only one problem: the captain’s parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick.
Once he understood, he started shouting in the middle of the show “look, it’s not the same hat”, or “look, he’s hiding flowers under the table”, or “ hey, why are all of the cards aces?”
The magician was furious but couldn’t do anything. It was, after all, the captains parrot. One stormy night on the pacific, the ship unfortunately sank.
The magician found himself on a piece of wood floating in the middle of the sea, as fate would have it, with the parrot.
They stared at each other with hatred, but didn’t utter a word
This went on for a day, then two days, then three days. Finally the parrot couldn’t hold back and said
“Okay I give up, where’s the ship?”
A MAN ABSOLUTELY HATED HIS GIRLFRIEND’S CAT
A man absolutely hated his girlfriend’s cat and decided to get rid of him one day by driving him 20 blocks from his home and leaving him at the park. As he was getting home, the cat was walking up the driveway.
The next day he decided to drive the cat 40 blocks away. He put the beast out and headed home. Driving back up his driveway, there was the cat! He kept taking the cat further and further and the cat would always beat him home.
At last he decided to drive a few miles away, turn right, then left, past the bridge, then right again
and another right until he reached what he thought was a safe distance from his home and left the cat there. Hours later the man calls home to his girlfrien: “Jen, is the cat there?” “Yes”, the girlfriend answers, “why do you ask?” Frustrated, the man answered, “Put that son of a b@%#h on the phone, I’m lost and need directions!”

We were together for two hours and she kissed me all over that is why I have lipstick all over. Also that is why I have perfume smell all over..So the wife took one look at him, and screamed... You Scoundrel ! You expect me to believe such a story?! Look at your shoes, you have been playing golf again with your friends and got some waitress to kiss and leave a lipstick print on your shirt and rub all over you to smell like perfume, so you can come to lie to me. Get inside and clean yourself up! And let this be the last time you go golfing with your friends again... and I don’t want to hear a peep from you!

JOHN LYNCH TOURNAMENT:
Well done to everyone involved in the running of the 6th Annual John Lynch Memorial Tournament last Saturday which was another resounding success (see Juvenile Notes). The late John, of course, was father of our current Club Chairman, Shane and our former Club Chairman, Liam.
CIAN PURCELL: Like his colleague Joseph O’Connor a few weeks ago Cian Purcell has also had a very successful operation in Santry last week. Everyone in the Club sends their best wishes to you Cian and look forward to seeing you back in action in 2023.
u 13: Another enjoyable and successful U13 season, orchestrated and directed by Martin Courtney, Ger Hobbert, Dan Ahern, Eoghan Galvin, David Scanlon, Kieran O’Flaherty, Pa Laide and Jack Morgan, has come to an end. Thanks to a very enthusiastic panel and to their dedicated-to-the-cause leaders. A brilliant season!

U12 Girls
We are looking forward to seeing our U12 panel on Tuesday evening at 7:30pm, at our complex in Ballyseedy. We will celebrate the great season that we have just had and present the North Kerry shield and Tralee town board medals to the girls.
It’s been a season of dedication and hard work and we are extremely proud of all the girls for the massive effort that they gave.
U14 GIRLS
Our U14s are now finished with football but have started an 8-week Strength and conditioning program in preparation for next season.
U16 GIRLS
John Mitchels u16s finished up their season last Tuesday when they played Finuge in tralee in the NKL division 4 plate final. Both teams did themselves proud on the night, putting on a brilliant display of football in terrible weather for their supporters.

John Mitchels U9 & U10 boys had a fantastic day's football at Austin Stacks Annual John Lynch Memorial U10 Tournament.

St Pats Race Night
On Sunday night we had our very first Race Night, there was a great turnout out with much of the wider community coming to enjoy the event. On the night we had Tim Moynihan as MC who did a wonderful job of guiding everyone through the night from calling out the up-and-coming race to helping make sure everyone got their bets in. Well done to the boy’s team that represented St Pats at the Kilmacud Crokes blitz today in Ballyrickard. While our season is officially over, we brought some of the older boys along to the event.Thank you to Kilmacud Crokes for the invitation and to Kerins O'Rahilly for hosting the event. A big thank you also to our coaches Brian O'Regan, Michael Higgins, John Colivet, and our head coach Joe Costello.

An Evening with Ronan O’Gara Just a week to go until we will have the privilege of hosting Ronan O’Gara, one of Ireland greatest rugby players and sports personalities, for a club fundraising event. This is on in Ballygarry Estate, Hotel and Spa next Sunday 6th November. We hope as many as possible can and will support the club.

Our last day of football for this 2022 season saw the u11 boys tog out on a very wet Saturday morning for a final fling in the Ballyrickard Blitz.

Our U13s had a great result in the final round of the North Kerry Under 13 B Championship at the weekend. A final score of Parnells 5-9 to 2-11 for Causeway. Congratulations and well done boys.
Coaches Required
The Kerry Hurling Development Squads are looking for coaches at all age groups. There are vacancies at U14, U15 and U16. In order to develop players, Kerry GAA need a really strong coaching group involved at each age group. U-10 LB Rovers 3 - 3 Dynamos Red Team. Exciting game of football, where our boys came from 2 goals down to lead 3 - 2 only to see LB Rovers equalise late in the game. U-16 Div 2 Dynamos B 3 - 1 Mastergeeha B. Great result from Dynamos led by captain Oisin Ty O Carroll. A minutes applause was observed by both teams and coaches in memort of Pádraig Harnett. Francis O Brien was on hand to score a brace of goals with Evan Daly netting the other. Despite a late Mastergeeha onslaught, Dynamos held on for s deserving victory.
KDL Div 3 Elton Wanderers 1 - 5 Dynamos C. Three wins from three for our Senior C team. Goals from John O Brien ( Hat-trick ) Lorcan Seymour and an O.G. saw Dynamos overcom Elton Wanderers. Best wishes to Jack O Donoghue on a speedy recovery after taking a knock
in the opening half.
KDL Div 1B Windmill 2 - 7 Dynamos B. Three wins from 4. A great mix of our Youth League Winners and some more experienced members of the club saw us overcome a gallant Windmill united Team. Scorers on the day were Jesse Duggan 2, John O Brien, Brendan Sweeney, John Farragher, Chris O Sullivan, Brendan Coffey.

Eddie Campion Dolphin Open 2022 A great weekend of swimming was had over the weekend with a number of our swimmers participating in the Dolphin Open Level 3 Gala in Cork. The event presented a great opportunity for our senior squads to compete mid way in the short course season with some great performances and PBs from our swimmers.
