Heartfelt Tributes Flow for Tralee’s Jim Finucane

Deep sadness and admiration have been expressed across Kerry’s political, business, and education communities following the passing of Jim Finucane, a man widely regarded as one of Tralee’s most dedicated and respected public figures.

Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD, who served alongside Mr. Finucane on Kerry County Council, paid a moving tribute to her former colleague and friend.

“I am truly saddened to learn of the passing of Jim Finucane and wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy to Sheila and family, the Fine Gael party, and all who knew and loved Jim. He had an extraordinary capacity to make friends and keep friends throughout his life. Jim’s life was one of service — always about doing the right thing for the right reasons.”

She described him as “a bridge builder, peace-maker and consensus maker all his life,” praising his integrity and leadership during his time as Mayor of Tralee, Mayor of Kerry, and Chair of Kerry ETB. Minister Foley added that even after his retirement, Jim remained deeply involved in community life and was recently conferred as Ireland’s first Honorary Consul of Ukraine, an honour she described as “richly deserved.” Principal of Moyderwell Mercy Primary School, where Mr. Finucane served as Chairperson of the Board of Management, said his contribution to the school community “cannot be measured in words alone.”

“Jim stood for honesty, integrity, grace, and humility. He led not for praise, but from a deep belief in education and community. His vision guided the school through transformative years, and his kindness touched everyone he met.”

The school community extended its deepest sympathies to Jim’s wife Sheila, and children Jill, James and Orla.

From the business community, Tralee Chamber Alliance issued a statement acknowledging his immense contribution to the town:

“Jim Finucane’s leadership, compassion, and tireless advocacy helped shape Tralee into the thriving town it is today. His wisdom and generosity will be deeply missed.”

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr. Mike Foley, paid tribute to a “dear friend and colleague,” adding:

“Jim will be remembered for his dedication, passion and kindness. He served Kerry with distinction and will always be remembered as a true gentleman.”

Mayor of Tralee, Cllr. Terry O’Brien, also expressed condolences on behalf of the Tralee Municipal District:

“Jim was a man of integrity, honesty, and leadership — always putting Tralee and its people first. His loss will be felt deeply by everyone who had the privilege to serve alongside him.”

As a mark of respect, the Tralee Municipal District Council meeting

was postponed, and a Book of Condolence was opened at County Buildings, Rathass.

Adding a deeply personal perspective, Fianna Fáil Councillor Mikey Sheehy, who was both Jim’s nephew and his colleague on the Council, spoke movingly about his influence.

“Jim wasn’t just my uncle — he was a friend and a mentor,” Cllr. Sheehy said. “I had the privilege of sitting alongside him on Kerry County Council and saw firsthand the respect he commanded right across the chamber. He gave decades of service to the people of Tralee and Kerry, always guided by fairness and community.”

He continued, “Jim was, above all else, a family man — devoted to Sheila and so proud of his children. He balanced his public service with a love for home and community that shone through in everything he did.”

Cllr. Sheehy described Jim as “a steady, reassuring presence in both

family and political life — someone who gave great advice, always with a quiet word and a quick sense of humour. He was always guided by what was right.” He concluded, “Jim leaves behind a great legacy — not just in the work he did for Tralee and Kerry, but in the example he set for those of us lucky enough to know him well.

A proud Tarbert native, Jim made his home and career in Tralee, serving for nearly 30 years in public life, including as Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council in 2023. Though his passing leaves a profound void, his legacy of integrity, kindness, and unwavering service endures.

As Minister Norma Foley so aptly said:

“Rest easy now, Jim. Thank you for everything.”

It is with deep sadness that we remember our friend and esteemed Chairperson of Tralee Sports & Leisure Centre, Jim Finucane.

Jim served on the Board for years and as chairperson for the last 12 years. During his time, his unwavering commitment to the continued development of the Sports centre for the people of Tralee was an inspiration to all involved. He believed deeply in the importance of the Sports Centre to foster community integration, friendships and inspire the next generation to participate in sports and physical activity. A true gentleman, Jim will be greatly missed by all who knew him for his warmth, enthusiasm and his quiet but steely determination to get things done.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Sheila, his daughters Jill and Orla and his son James.

Jim’s vision will continue to guide us at the Sports Centre as we honour his memory in all do in the future.

May he rest in peace.

Unbeatable – Handball Supremo, Fr. Tom Jones (1868–1950)

The remarkable life story of Fr. Tom Jones, one of Ireland’s most celebrated handball champions and a long-serving Kerry priest, is now captured in a new biography titled Unbeatable – Handball Supremo, published this month by Red Stripe Press.

Ordained in Maynooth in 1896, Fr. Jones spent a decade on overseas ministry before devoting 45 years of service in the Diocese of Kerry, where he served as C.C. and P.P. in Glenbeigh (1906–09, 1931–50), Ballyferriter (1909–16), Killorglin (1916–21), Dingle (1921–28), and Caherciveen (1928–31).

A multi-title handball champion in his youth, Fr. Jones became a legend of the sport, with Handball Clubs in Tralee and Glenbeigh proudly naming him as their Patron.

Leading Kerry Jeweller Urges Public to Update Gold Valuations as Prices Reach Record Highs

One of Kerry’s longest-established jewellers is urging the public to review their gold valuations and insurance policies as global gold prices continue to surge to historic highs.

Heather O’Sullivan, Co-Owner of John Ross Jewellers in Tralee, says many people are unaware that their jewellery may now be worth substantially more than when it was last valued.

“Gold prices have soared in recent months, meaning that many customers are under-insured without realising it,” she explained. “We’ve seen pieces that were valued a few years ago now worth two or three times more.

One customer brought in a bracelet bought for €500 that’s now valued at €2,000 — a remarkable increase.”

Heather warns that failing to update valuations could leave people exposed in the event of loss or theft. “Sentimental value can’t be replaced, but ensuring jewellery is correctly insured offers at least some financial comfort,” she said.

She also reminded customers of the two-week reporting rule for lost jewellery under most insurance policies.

“If you don’t report the loss within that time, your claim can be refused — even with full ‘all risks’ insurance. It’s in the small print, but it’s crucial.”

Heather encourages people to act now: “We offer free valuations for items purchased from John Ross Jewellers. It only takes a few minutes and could save major disappointment later. It’s quite literally about valuing your valuables

Advent Talks Series on Hope in St Johns Church

St. John’s Parish, Tralee will host a series of talks on the theme of “Seeds of Hope” in the church in Castle Street next week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, Nov 10-12, at 7pm.

On Monday evening, Colette O’Doherty, Youth Co-ordinator for the Kerry Diocese, will speak on the Theme of “Hope and Young People”. Two members of the Cenacolo Community, an addiction support group based in Knock, Co. Mayo, will speak on “Hope and Addiction”, and on the Wednesday evening, author and spiritual director, Martina Lehane Sheehan will speak on the topic of “Hope and Prayer” .

Each evening will open with the lecture and end with prayer and reflection. The programme is part of the Tralee Parishes’ Pastoral Area Jubilee Year celebration.

Kerins O’Rahilly’s GAA Club Calls on Public to Help Chronicle Its Proud History

One of Kerry’s oldest and most storied GAA clubs, Kerins O’Rahilly’s of Tralee, is appealing to the public for help as it works to compile a comprehensive book on its rich sporting heritage.

The Strand Road club, home to some of the county’s greatest footballers — including seven-time All-Ireland winners Dan O’Keeffe and Seán Walsh, as well as modern icons Tommy Walsh and David Moran — is piecing together over a century of memories, achievements, and local pride.

Records show football and hurling teams representing the Strand Road area as far back as the late 1880s. However, the club’s formal foundation date remains uncertain, with its evolution from Strand Road to O’Rahilly’s in the 1930s and then Kerins O’Rahilly’s in the 1940s forming part of the fascinating story

the new book aims to tell.

A dedicated committee has already discovered historic photographs, including a 1929 football team and a 1919 hurling team, but believes much more history lies hidden in attics, albums, and drawers across Kerry and beyond.

“The book is only as good as the stories we can gather,” said committee member Paul Mullins.

“We’re asking anyone with old photos, match programmes, or memories connected to the club to come forward and help us complete the jigsaw.”

To assist, the club is hosting two ‘Scanathon’ events at the clubhouse on November 8th and 15th, from 11am to 1pm, where supporters can bring memorabilia to be scanned and immediately returned. Items can also be emailed to korchronicles@gmail.com.

The book, a year in the making, is expected to be published mid-next year by Hero Books, owned by former Meath All-Ireland winner Liam Hayes.

Minister Foley welcomes €1 million in funding for outdoor recreation projects in Kerry

Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry T.D Norma Foley has welcomed confirmation of over €1 million in funding for outdoor recreation projects in Kerry.

This includes €500,000 to further extend the Ballyseedy Wood Amenity Trail, €200,000 to complete the upgrade of the Jarvey Lane Walk and Cycle trail in Killarney, €200,000 for the upgrade of the Shannon Way and around €196,000 for repair and Improvement works to prevent further erosion at Strickeen Mountain Trail.

The investment, under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS), is to enhance forest walks, cycleways, rivers, lakes and beaches across the county.

It will also provide a boost to the local economy by attracting more visitors to rural communities.

Former Kerry Footballer Gavin Crowley to Deliver Youth Sports Workshops

Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership, in collaboration with YouMon, is hosting a series of in-person workshops designed to support coaches, teachers, mentors, and parents in promoting the health and wellbeing of young athletes.

The ‘Protecting Our Youth Athletes’ workshops will be led by former Kerry Senior Footballer Gavin Crowley, founder of the athlete monitoring platform YouMon. Drawing on his elite sporting and

coaching experience, Gavin will share practical insights on managing training loads, preventing burnout, and encouraging long-term athletic development.

Topics include recognising overtraining, the importance of rest and recovery, supporting athletes during growth stages, and simple wellbeing tracking tools for parents and clubs.

on Thursday, November 6th and Killorglin on Thursday, November 20th, from 7–9pm.

Over €92,000 for Kerry under

Community

Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry T.D Norma Foley has welcomed confirmation that Kerry will receive over €92,000 in funding under the Community Safety Fund 2025.

The Community Safety Fund which totals €4.4 million nationwide in 2025 redirects proceeds of crime seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) and An Garda Siochana back into communities. This year’s allocation is a 33% increase on the €3 million awarded in 2024 and will support 42 community safety projects across the country. This is almost double the number

of projects funded by the first Community Safety Fund in 2022.

New Wave Adventure Therapy Wild Project CLG in Camp is the beneficiary of the allocation in Kerry and will receive €92,260 towards their project titled ‘Call of the Wild’. A National Office for Community Safety has been established which has responsibility for administering the Community Safety Fund. This Office is also providing support, training and guidance to Local Community Safety Partnerships, which are being rolled out nationwide at present.

Minister Foley said: “I welcome

confirmation of this funding allocation from my Cabinet colleague, Minister Jim O’Callaghan for the New Wave Adventure Therapy Wild Project in Camp which is a most worthy recipient.

“The Community Safety Fund is an important and effective element in achieving stronger, safer communities. It ensures that the proceeds of crime seized by CAB and An Garda Síochána are reinvested back into communities to enhance safety and security in those communities.”

A Remarkable Week for the Quirke-Crowley Family

It has been a truly remarkable week for Susan Quirke-Crowley of the Mounthawk Montessori School Group and her husband John Crowley. The couple celebrated their Pearl Wedding Anniversary with a joyful family gathering in Bella Bia, joined by their daughter Kate and Oisín O’Connor. The celebration rounded off a whirlwind week for the family. John returned from Morocco, where he is currently based with Liebherr, to join in the festivities marking their daughter Caroline’s engagement to Aiden Maunsell. Caroline and Aiden are each one of six siblings, and the engagement brought together both their families — the Crowley, Quirke, Lyons, and Maunsell clans — along with many friends to share in the joy. KIA TEASES HIGHPERFORMANCE

EV4 GT — THE ELECTRIC HOT HATCH REVOLUTION

Kia is setting the stage for its own “Golf GTI moment” with the upcoming EV4 GT, a high-performance version of its all-electric hatchback.

The brand has unveiled the GT Wrap, a striking neon-green-on-black camouflage that hints at both speed and excitement. The design features dynamic stripes across the bonnet resembling pulsing stereo meters, while lines sweep along the doors and roof, accentuating a sporty rear spoiler. Kia describes the look as a “universal symbol of speed and energy,” inspired by motion blur and continuous momentum.

While performance figures remain under wraps, speculation points to dual motors, four-wheel drive, and around 400hp, achieving 0–100km/h in about five seconds. The EV4 GT will feature a complete overhaul of its suspension and steering, overseen by Manfred Harrer, the former Porsche and MINI engineering expert now leading Kia’s performance division.

Kia says the EV4 GT will “reimagine Gran Turismo for a new generation,” merging emotion, innovation, and driving thrill. With a global debut expected in 2026, the EV4 GT looks poised to deliver the electric adrenaline rush enthusiasts have been waiting for.

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors secured a vital home win over St. Vincent’s, taking their fourth League victory ahead of next weekend’s National Cup clash with Energywise Ireland Neptune.

Despite missing top scorer Iggy Hunte, Warriors started strong with Eoin Quigley, Jordan Perkins, Cian Sullivan, and Daniel Jokubaitis leading early. Saints, led by Jaylyn Richardson, levelled midway through the first quarter, but Warriors edged ahead 22-19.

Saints opened the second with a 10-point burst, but Olaf Michalczuk’s 10-point response — including two threes — reignited Warriors. A powerful finish from Jokubaitis, Quigley, and Perkins gave Tralee a 51-40 halftime lead.

Warriors dominated the third quarter with relentless scoring from Jokubaitis, Quigley, and Perkins, stretching the lead to 80-55. Saints rallied late through Richardson, cutting the gap to six, but foul trouble halted their comeback. Perkins sealed victory with a late score to secure the 96-87 win.
