Dr Pieter van der Merwe answers
Understanding Type 2 Diabetes
Q: What is Type 2 diabetes?
A: Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that a ects how your body processes blood sugar (glucose). In this condition, your body either resists the e ects of insulin—the hormone that regulates sugar movement into cells—or doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain normal glucose levels. Over time, high blood sugar can lead to serious health complications if not properly managed.
Q: What causes Type 2 diabetes?
A: The exact cause is complex, but it usually results from a combination of genetic and lifestyle factors. Being overweight, physically inactive, or having a family history of diabetes increases your risk. Poor diet and prolonged stress can also contribute to insulin resistance.
Q: What are the symptoms?
A: Many people don’t notice symptoms right away. Common signs include increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow-healing wounds. Some may also experience unexplained weight loss or frequent infections.
Q: How is Type 2 diabetes diagnosed?
A: Doctors typically use blood tests such as the fasting blood sugar test, A1C test, or oral glucose tolerance test to con rm the diagnosis. Regular screening is recommended for individuals at higher risk.
Q: Can Type 2 diabetes be managed or reversed?
A: While there’s no permanent cure, Type 2 diabetes can often be managed—and sometimes even put into remission—through lifestyle changes. Eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and monitoring blood sugar levels are key. Some people may also need medication.
Q: Why is early detection important?
A: Early diagnosis and treatment help prevent complications such as heart disease, nerve damage, kidney problems, and vision loss. With proper care, people with Type 2 diabetes can live long, healthy lives.

Cara Credit Union Sponsors Lifesaving “Message in a Bottle” Initiative Led by Tralee Lions Club
Cara Credit Union is proud to announce its sponsorship of the “Message in a Bottle” project, a community-focused initiative run by the Tralee Lions Club. This simple yet powerful scheme is designed to support vulnerable individuals by ensuring that emergency responders have quick access to vital medical and personal information in the event of an emergency. The initiative provides participants with a plastic bottle containing a personal information form and three green cross stickers. The bottle is stored in the refrigerator, and the stickers are placed on the fridge and inside the front and back doors of the home. These markers alert emergency services to the presence of the bottle, allowing them to locate
it quickly and access potentially lifesaving information.
Kate Walsh, Cara Credit Union branch manager in Tralee said: “We’re delighted to support this initiative, which aligns perfectly with our values of community care and safety. A few minutes can make all the difference in an emergency, and this simple bottle gives first responders the information they need to act quickly and effectively.”
The Tralee Lions Club, who coordinate the project locally, expressed their gratitude for the sponsorship: “We are delighted to have Cara Credit Union on board. Their support helps us reach more people with this initiative, which truly can save a life” added Corinne Evans of Tralee Lions Club.
Who benefits?
• Older adults
• People with disabilities or chronic health conditions
• Individuals living alone
• Emergency services including paramedics, Gardaí, firefighters, and hospital staff
Cara Credit Union’s sponsorship helps ensure that these bottles are available free of charge to those who need them most and can be collected at local GP’s, primary medical care centres and active retired groups around Tralee.

Tralee Comes Alive For A Spectacular Samhain Chiarraí Bank Holiday Monday Celebration
The clouds parted just in time on Bank Holiday Monday evening to allow visitors and locals alike enjoy a truly magical night of Samhain Chiarraí festivities in the heart of Tralee town.
The celebrations began on Denny Street, where the Kingdom Céilí Academy Kickers delighted the crowds with lively traditional Irish music and dance, setting a vibrant tone for the evening ahead.
The colourful procession brought the spirit of Samhain to life with spectacular costumes, stilt walkers, fire performers, large inflatables, and the striking presence of The Cailleach Chiarraí.
Following the parade, spectators were treated to the Cailleach Chiarraí Awakening Spectacle, a captivating performance telling the story of the young Cailleach’s awakening on the Dingle Promontory — brought to life through music, song, dance, and breathtaking fire artistry. As the evening drew to a close, the weather held long enough for a dazzling fireworks display, lighting up the Tralee sky and bringing the night’s celebrations to a triumphant finish. The Samhain Chiarraí Festival series now continues its journey across Kerry, bringing the magic to Killarney from October 29th–31st, before culminating in Listowel from
October 31st to November 2nd, where festivities will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display set against the backdrop of Listowel Castle. All information is on www. samhainchiarrai.com
“It’s wonderful to see communities across Kerry embracing our Samhain traditions with such imagination and enthusiasm,” said Helen O’Connor-Barry, A/SEO Economic Development and Tourism with Kerry County Council. “These events not only celebrate our rich cultural heritage but also bring families and visitors together to experience the magic of Halloween in the true spirit of Kerry.”

“I strongly encourage community groups across Kerry to apply for this fund. It offers huge potential, and I want to see it put to the best possible use for the benefit of our communities.”
Tidy Towns groups, residents’ associations, voluntary and not-forprofit organisations, sports clubs, and community centres not owned by the local authority can now apply for funding. A total of €663,000 has been allocated to Kerry County Council as part of the €27 million Climate Action Programme.

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER
Fireworks and the law
Pugsley is arranging a Halloween party for his children at the Addams mansion and is wondering what are the legalities around fireworks, bonfires etc. and what he should be look out for?
Fireworks are exciting items that can burn, explode, give off a loud noise and/or have a visual effect. They are divided in Irish law into four categories 1 to 4 and it is the category 1 that can be legally sold in Ireland. These include Bengal matches, Bengal sticks, Christmas Crackers, Crackling granules, Flash pellets, Fountains, Ground spinners Hand Held sparklers, Novelty Matches, Party poppers, Serpents snaps, Table bombs and Throwdowns. These can only be sold to over 12’s and importers should have a license. These fireworks are regarded as posing the least danger, they make very little noise and are usually for use in a limited space. Having said all that, they should not be used without adult supervision as one has to be careful with them. e.g. sparklers can heat up to six times the heat of a hot pan of cooking oil and can get red hot at the burning end. Party poppers have caused eye injuries at close range.
In relation to the legal category 1 fireworks the following should be on their packaging: Instructions for use, Minimum safety distance (if appropriate)“For outdoor use only” (if appropriate), Minimum age of person it can be sold to, Name, type of item and category of firework, Name of the manufacturer or importer, The CE mark and the Explosive content. Christmas crackers now if imported from the United Kingdom need to have name, address and trading name details of the importer.
Aside from the above all other fireworks ( bangers, roman candles, aerial wheels etc) are illegal in Ireland and can merit large fines/imprisonment for importation and use. Also the Gardai have considerable powers of search, seizure and arrest around use of illegal fireworks.
In relation to bonfires as burning of household and garden waste is prohibited it would appear that bonfires are illegal. Therefore it may be more appropriate to use the outdoor firepit or chimenea or even have a Halloween barbeque weather permitting.
It is a difficult time of year for animals who can get very distressed at the loud noises and it is recommended to keep the lights low or play a radio or television in the background to drown out some of the noise for your beloved friend from the animal kingdom.
Have a Happy Halloween.
