Benemerenti medals awarded to three Glenbeigh Parishioners on Sunday September 20th 2026 Benemerenti (‘Papal’) Medals were awarded to three Glenbeigh parishioners at St James Church Glenbeigh on Sunday September 20th 2026. The three medal recipients are: • Ms Marian McCann • Ms Kathleen McCann • Ms Maureen Guerin
The medals were presented by Bishop +Ray Browne, Bishop of Kerry, on behalf of the Holy Father, Pope Leo. Fr Kieran O’Sullivan, Parish Priest, Glenbeigh said: “It was a privilege for me to be able to nominate Marian, Kathleen and Maureen and I am thrilled that the Holy Father endorsed this award. It is unusual that three medals would

be awarded at the same time and reflects the significant contribution Marian, Kathleen and Maureen have made to our parish over the years. I would like to thank Bishop Ray for his support with these nominations. The spontaneous and warm responses from our congregations when I made the announcement of this news within our churches in Glencar and Glenbeigh is a testament to the support and endorsement by the local community of this recognition by the Pope of Marian, Kathleen and Maureen”. The Benemerenti Medals were first introduced in 1832. They bear the coat of arms of the reigning Pope. “Benemerenti” means “well deserved”, and they are awarded to
individuals who make an outstanding and sustained contribution to parish life.

Kerry teenager to represent Ireland at European science contest Mounthawk student Aoibheann Daly is heading to Kiel, Germany, to compete at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS), running from 22 to 27 September, after her win at last year’s Stripe Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. The Tralee student’s project, GlioScope: Multi-task Deep Learning and Causal AI for Glioma & Glioblastoma Profiling, uses AI to help doctors identify likely genetic mutations from a routine MRI
scan — allowing faster treatment decisions and reduced risk for brain cancer patients. She joins 140 young scientists from over 30 countries competing for the EU title. Stripe’s Alison Ahern said the company was proud to see Aoibheann representing both Ireland and Stripe YSTE on the international stage among some of Europe’s brightest young researchers. Taoiseach Micheál Martin, who hosted Aoibheann at Government
Buildings ahead of the trip, said her work highlighted how new technologies can help tackle complex global challenges, and wished her success representing Ireland “with distinction.” EUCYS Ireland organiser Mari Cahalane praised the project as a reflection of the calibre of young scientific talent coming through in Ireland, wishing Aoibheann well for the competition in Kiel.
Kerry schools join Ireland’s biggest ever online chess event
Twelve Kerry schools took part last Friday in what’s believed to be the largest single online chess event in Irish history, as part of Ireland’s Big Chess Day. Nationwide, 251 schools, almost 500 classrooms and over 9,000 children were taught live and played chess live in one event. The initiative was led by Kerry native and primary school teacher Tomás Fitzpatrick, who taught the session himself. Fitzpatrick began teaching
chess in classrooms without tuition almost two years ago, later building a one-to-many broadcast platform with co-founder Oisín Flynn to deliver it at scale. Friday’s event featured beginner lessons followed by inter-school puzzle competitions, all streamed live from a single broadcast to hundreds of classrooms simultaneously — a model Fitzpatrick believes is unique in Irish education. The project, now known as
ChessCraft, grew from in-person workshops held around Munster eighteen months ago. Fitzpatrick said he and Flynn have been taken aback by the scale of the response from schools nationwide. Further information on the initiative and the Kerry schools involved is available at chesscraft.ie.

Siobhan Walsh, Operations Manager with Down Syndrome Kerry, said the event is about far more than cycling, describing it as a celebration of community, inclusion and shared purpose. She thanked Boyles of Ballyseedy for hosting, along with The Chain Gang Cycling Club and volunteers, adding that every kilometre cycled helps fund opportunities for members and their families across Kerry. Held under the theme “Cycle for Inclusion – Brighter Tomorrows,” the day will also include refreshments and entertainment for participants afterwards, offering a chance for community and friendship alongside the physical challenge. Registration costs €30 and is open to those aged 18 and over. Down Syndrome Kerry is encouraging individuals, clubs, businesses and community groups to take part.

Kerry Urged to Get Behind #TieDayFriday Dancing, a dawn disco and plenty of colourful ties will help Kerry Mental Health Association raise funds on Friday, 9 October, as its annual #TieDayFriday campaign returns. In Tralee, multiple World Champion Irish dancer David Geaney will lead an Irish Dancing Marathon outside Kirby’s Brogue Inn from 2pm to 9pm. More than 100 dancers and musicians are expected to take part, and dancers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Early risers can start the day at George Bastible’s Daybreak Fitness Disco in John Mitchels GAA Complex Sports Hall. The live DJ and workout will run from 6am to 7am. To register, visit MyFitness Kerry, opposite McDonald’s in Tralee, or WhatsApp George on 087 447 6391. Kerry Mental Health Association
general manager John Drummey said last year’s dancing left him with painful leg cramps, but also brought joy to more than 100 volunteers and generous support from local businesses and the public. “The pain passed. For people experiencing mental health challenges, difficult days aren’t so easily left behind,” he said. People can join in wherever they are by wearing a tie, sharing a photograph on social media, donating or organising a workplace or school activity. €3 tie pins will be available at Garvey’s SuperValu on 9 October. Funds raised will support therapeutic activities at mental health day centres, transport to mental health services and awareness projects across Kerry. Donations to the dance marathon
can be made at KerryMentalHealth. ie/dancing and to the disco at KerryMentalHealth.ie/disco until 27 October. The association thanked tie pin sponsor Red Chair Recruitment,
collection volunteers from SMBC/ JRI America, and everyone taking part. To volunteer or organise an event, email Volunteers@ KerryMentalHealth.ie or phone 083 203 2742.
Minister Foley opens new disability home in Listowel Minister for Children, Disability and Equality Norma Foley has officially opened Ashfield Lodge, a new home for people with disabilities in Listowel. The house now provides accommodation for three residents with disabilities, along with respite care for a fourth adult. It is funded by the Department of Children through the HSE and operated by Saint John of God Community Services Kerry. Minister Foley said she hoped the home would be filled with everyday moments — friendship, shared meals
and personal milestones — that make a house a home. Last year, HSE South West gave around €27.5 million to Saint John of God Community Services Kerry, which supports over 300 children and adults with disabilities locally. CEO Kevin Madigan thanked everyone involved, calling it the first of several planned developments. Nationally, more than 9,000 people with disabilities live in residential services, with expanding capacity a Government priority.

LASTA Youth Arts Festival returns for four days of creativity
The 2026 LASTA Youth Arts Festival runs from 1–4 October, offering four days of theatre, music, film and visual art shaped by Young Curators Antonia Gergely and Neil Moore Ryan. The festival opens Thursday 1 October at 7pm with the Backspace Art Exhibition and Ag Samhlú Saoil Eile Sound Installation, both running daily throughout the event. Highlights include bilingual theatre piece Anonn on Friday; a pop-up vintage clothes shop, Jigsaw Kerry’s “Piece of Mind” creative drop-in, and a screening of Akira on Saturday; and a creative workshop, art therapy session and live gig from AMANO on Sunday. Now in its sixth year, LASTA is a national festival created by young people for young people, spanning eight arts venues across Ireland throughout October. It began in 2020 with Backstage Theatre and has since grown into a multidisciplinary celebration of theatre, music, film and visual art. Antonia and Neil said their programme reflects what matters to today’s audiences, touching on the resurgence of the Irish language, a return to analogue creativity, self-reflection and wellbeing, while creating space for connection through fashion, film and music. Tickets and further details are available at www.siamsatire.com.
At KP Therapy, we focus on building resilience, mobility, and control to protect players from strains, sprains, and overuse injuries. A strong core and hips provide the foundation for explosive movements, while flexibility in the hamstrings, calves, and lower back reduces the risk of muscle pulls. Regular mobility drills and dynamic warm-ups before training prepare the body for action, while proper cool-down and recovery routines help muscles repair faster. Hydration, sleep, and nutrition also play a vital role in injury prevention. A well-fuelled, well-rested body is far less likely to break down under pressure. For those carrying old knocks or tightness, early treatment and tailored rehab are key—don’t wait until a niggle becomes a sidelining injury. Whether you’re playing for fun or competition, keeping your body balanced and resilient ensures more time on the pitch, less on the sidelines. At KP Therapy, we’ve got your back—and your legs too! Have a good weekend!

Kerry celebrates creativity on Culture Night More than 60 events across Kerry’s five Municipal Districts brought communities together for Culture Night on Friday, 18 September, in what’s being hailed as a memorable countywide celebration of creativity. Towns, villages and communities throughout Kerry hosted music, dance, live performance, exhibitions, workshops, storytelling, film, heritage and family events, offering a broad snapshot of cultural life in the county. Established venues opened alongside libraries, community spaces and heritage sites, bringing the celebrations into the heart of local communities. Both Irish and English featured throughout the programme, reflecting the traditions of Kerry alongside the voices and creative practices of the county’s many newer communities.
A highlight of the night was RTÉ’s live national Culture Night broadcast from Killarney, putting Kerry in the national spotlight. Cathaoirligh from each of the five Municipal Districts visited events throughout the evening, meeting artists, performers, volunteers and audiences. This year’s programme also carried a European dimension, with several events supported through Culture Ireland as Ireland holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU. Kerry welcomed Czech poet Šimon Leitgeb as part of the IrelandCzechia cultural exchange. Kerry County Council Arts Officer Kate Kennelly thanked everyone who contributed, saying the excitement had spread right across the county, with people coming together to make, hear, see and
share in something special — while the RTÉ broadcast showcased Kerry nationally. Leas-Chathaoirleach Cllr Jimmy Moloney said the scale of events and turnout was hugely encouraging, crediting artists, cultural organisations, community groups and volunteers for the night’s energy and welcome. Culture Night is a national initiative offering free access to cultural activity, supported by the Arts Council. In Kerry, it is coordinated by the Kerry County Council Arts Office in partnership with artists, organisations, venues and communities across the county.

Cahill seeks extra landing days for Skellig Michael after early closure Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill has urged the OPW to reopen Skellig Michael for
extra days after its abrupt closure to visitors, with boat operators reportedly told only at lunchtime that the season was ending. Cahill said local businesses were frustrated, noting favourable conditions are forecast in the coming days and many boats are already booked through the weekend. He warned that every lost day costs boat operators, guides, accommodation providers and other local businesses income that can’t be recouped. While acknowledging the published season runs to September 30, weather permitting, Cahill said he has asked Minister Boxer Moran to consider additional landing days. He stressed the need to protect the UNESCO World Heritage Site, but said every effort should be made to maximise remaining opportunities where conditions allow, and hopes the OPW will reconsider extending the season.

A legacy in the water Personal tribute from Tralee Little Dolphins co-founder Shane Lee to Brian Casey, “Brian, when you first approached me at Tralee Sports Complex, you brought more than an idea for swimming lessons. You brought a belief, passed down through your family, that every child deserves the chance to feel welcome in the water. That story began more than 40 years ago in Clonmel. Your father, Jim Casey, founded the South Tipperary Dolphin Swimming Club and opened up swimming opportunities for people with disabilities through the Halliwick approach. You learned to swim there yourself. Jim later became your coach, but the lesson that stayed with you went beyond swimming: with understanding and the right support, everyone can take part. You carried that belief through your own years as a swimmer, coach and teacher. Then you and Jodie began looking for a swimming environment where your daughter Sophia could feel safe, understood and free to progress at her own pace. Jodie’s determination helped turn your family’s search into a question that spoke to so many other parents in Kerry: where can our children have that same opportunity? That question brought us together. We began developing Tralee Little Dolphins, drawing on the approach you knew from your father’s club and building a team ready to meet each child as an individual. What started with Sophia has become a place where other children can discover the joy of the water, and where their families can feel understood too. I want to thank you, Brian, for trusting me with that vision and for everything you have put into making it real. Thank you to Jodie for the work, encouragement and determination she has given the club, much of it behind the scenes. And thank you to the Casey family for the example that began with Jim and continues to shape what we do today. When a child finds the courage to put their face in the water, trusts a coach or arrives at the pool eager to get in, we see what this legacy means. Each achievement belongs to that child. It also reminds us why you set out to create this place. From Jim’s club in Clonmel to our Little Dolphins in Tralee, your family has helped make room in the water for another generation. Thank you.”

Tralee Chamber Alliance Member Spotlight With Kerry Cybersecurity Firm Invests in Next Generation of Local Talent A Kerry cybersecurity company is taking a long-term approach to building its team by investing in the next generation of local talent. NexGen Cyber, based in Kerry, hired Tech Apprentice Jack Sheehy through FIT’s Tech Apprenticeship programme, giving him the opportunity to gain a QQI Level 6 qualification while working alongside the company’s cybersecurity team. For co-founder Michael O’Connor,
the decision was about more than filling a vacancy. “We weren’t just looking to make a hire and bring someone on board. We’re wanting to create the next generation of cybersecurity professionals,” he said, adding that developing talent locally is particularly important for a Kerrybased business: “It’s really important for us being based in Kerry to be building up that skill set and that knowledge here locally.”
Jack has already contributed across areas including cybersecurity audits, cyber awareness, threat understanding and incident response. Michael says having an apprentice also brings a fresh perspective to the business, noting Jack’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. Cybersecurity is increasingly relevant to businesses of every size and sector, from retailers and hospitality to manufacturers and professional services firms, yet many smaller businesses can’t justify a dedicated specialist. FIT’s Tech Apprenticeship offers an alternative, combining a 70% workplace, 30% structured learning model over two years. FIT’s Tech Apprenticeship Officer, Jessica McKeown, said the model gives local businesses another way to build cybersecurity capability rather than relying solely on recruiting
experienced specialists. FIT’s next Cybersecurity Tech Apprenticeship programme in Kerry begins October 2026, covering threat detection, incident response, cloud security and AI, with no training fees for employers. Interested businesses can get in touch to learn more.
Pieta and Lyons Tea urge Kerry to host Tea & Talk this World Mental Health Day Pieta and Lyons Tea are calling on people in Kerry to host a Tea & Talk Morning on World Mental Health Day, Saturday 10 October, to raise funds for Pieta’s free suicide and selfharm prevention services. Specially marked Lyons Tea packs are available nationwide, with 20c from each sold donated to Pieta. Now in its second year, the campaign invites families, workplaces, schools and community groups to gather over tea in support of the cause.
Laura Hallinan, who turned to Pieta’s bereavement services after losing her brother Conor to suicide in 2016, is sharing her story to support this year’s campaign, having hosted her own Tea & Talk Morning last year. Pieta CEO Stephanie Manahan thanked Laura for her openness, saying every event and euro raised helps fund vital support services. Registration is open now at teaandtalk.ie.

Lios Póil launches bid to host Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta 2027 CLG Lios Póil officially launched preparations to host Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta 2027 at a community event in Tigh Tabhairne Uí Shúilleabháin on Saturday, 19 September.
The gathering brought together club members, past and present players and supporters to mark the start of the journey ahead for the club and the West Kerry Gaeltacht. Gabriel Ó Cathasaigh, Cathaoirleach of the organising committee, welcomed guests and spoke about the significance of hosting the competition. A newly produced short film,
telling the club’s story through the voices of those who’ve shaped it, premiered on the night, celebrating Lios Póil’s identity and its ties to the Irish language. A panel discussion featuring club figures and community members explored the Comórtas’s importance, its link between Gaelic games and the Irish language, and the legacy it can leave for future generations. Ó Cathasaigh described hosting the event as a huge honour, praising the meitheal of volunteers, families and businesses helping bring it together. Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta will run in Lios Póil from Friday, 4 June to Monday, 7 June 2027, welcoming
Gaeltacht clubs from across Ireland for a weekend of football, music, dance and language. Further updates
on fundraising and volunteering will follow in the coming months.
Fexco combines PACE with RDC Aviation to create global aviation data and sustainability platform
24 September 2026, Killorglin, Co. Kerry and Nottingham, UK | Fexco has announced an all-share strategic combination under which its PACE aviation sustainability platform will join RDC Aviation, a global provider of aviation data and market intelligence. Fexco will become a shareholder in the enlarged business and remain an active strategic partner.
The combination brings together PACE’s carbon emissions modelling and RDC’s commercial aviation intelligence. RDC’s LOOP platform distributes verified fleet and environmental data covering more than 230 airlines and 11,000 aircraft. The businesses expect to expand reporting capabilities and develop products for airlines, airports, aircraft lessors and financial institutions, including in sustainability-linked airport charging.
PACE’s team will join RDC and remain based at the RDI Hub in Killorglin. The enlarged business plans to invest in product development and international growth, with potential to expand employment in Kerry. RDC serves hundreds of aviation businesses across six continents and more than 130 airports. PACE supports aviation emissions measurement and ESG reporting, is a qualified provider under the Pegasus Guidelines, and powers the aviation component of JPMorgan Chase’s Carbon Compass methodology. Bertie Murphy, Chief Strategy Officer of Fexco, said: “The strategic logic behind this combination is compelling.” He said the businesses could offer customers a broader
service and reach new markets more quickly together. Peter Hind, CEO of RDC Aviation, said: “The addition of PACE
materially expands what RDC can offer its customers.” He highlighted opportunities across airport charging, carbon performance and aviation finance.

Q: I try to eat healthy but I'm honestly a bit confused about what a ‘balanced and nutritious’ diet actually means. What should I be eating? Laura, Fenit A: A balanced and nutritious diet really doesn’t have to be complicated. I’d start by building most meals around plenty of colourful vegetables and fruit, wholegrains, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds. These provide fibre, vitamins, minerals and plant-based protein, while giving you plenty of variety.
Ingredients
For protein, there are lots of plant-based choices, including chickpeas, lentils, beans and tofu. If you eat meat, organic lean chicken and some fish can be included occasionally in moderation. Dairy is another area worth considering, particularly if you’re someone who is prone to congestion or feel you produce a lot of mucus. There has been research done on the connection between dairy and mucus in the body so reducing or omitting dairy can be worth trying for a period to see how you feel, while making sure you’re getting nutrients such as calcium and vitamin B12 from suitable alternatives. Most importantly, healthy eating shouldn’t feel restrictive or complicated. Aim for variety, mostly whole foods and meals that leave you feeling nourished and satisfied. You don’t need to eat perfectly — consistency and balance matter far more.

Minimum age for e-scooter use raised to 18 Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien and Minister of State Seán Canney have introduced new regulations raising the minimum age for e-scooter use from 16 to 18, effective 2 October. Fees for detained and stored e-scooters will also double, rising to €80 for detention and the first storage day, and €30 for each additional day. The changes follow rules made mandatory helmets and highvisibility clothing for e-scooter users from 4 September.
Minister O’Brien said the age increase was a proportionate response to a rise in serious injuries and fatalities among young e-scooter users, sending a clear message on responsible use. Minister Canney said the measures were about protecting lives, while Minister of State Jerry Buttimer said they would support safe, sustainable travel across both urban and rural areas. Ireland secured an expedited EU review of the proposed age
limit, citing road safety concerns, bypassing the usual 12-week standstill period normally required under EU notification rules. Further measures approved by Government in July are expected in the coming weeks, including a rise in Fixed Charge Notices for e-scooter offences to €100, a new €100 fine for helmet and high-vis breaches, and progress on e-scooter registration
A wonderful end-of-summer evening at Ballyroe Lodge “What a memorable night we had at Ballyroe Lodge on Wednesday, 23 September. We welcomed more than one hundred guests from our good friends at St. John of God Kerry Services to our ballroom for an end-of-summer BBQ celebration. The room was full of conversation, laughter, fun and plenty of dancing! Our Executive Chef, Noel Keane, and his team led the outdoor
cooking, serving up a delicious BBQ for everyone to enjoy. It was a pleasure to see St. John of God Kerry Services bring together such a fabulous group. Their warmth and energy made the evening really very special, and our staff loved being part of it. On behalf of everyone at Ballyroe Lodge, I’d like to thank the organisers and guests.
Thank you to Scott, Rachel and our operations team. To Noel, Artem and Zoe behind the scenes in the kitchen, and a special mention to Pedro for capturing some candid moments on the night!
We very much look forward to welcoming them back once again for their next event and celebrating and supporting their fantastic members, families & friends. Jennifer Brosnan
And Susan and her stellar crew at St. John of God Kerry Services, they are truly a credit to our town, county and beyond.

Killorglin Courthouse works set to begin 5 October Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill and Cllr Tommy Cahill have welcomed confirmation
that works on the Killorglin Courthouse Project will begin on Monday, 5 October, following the appointment of Griffin Brothers Contracting and completion of approval processes. Deputy Cahill thanked the Department, Kerry County Council and Minister Dara Calleary for their support in advancing the project to construction stage. Cllr Cahill said the date marks a milestone for Killorglin, being the first major project to start under the town’s multi-million regeneration scheme. Both Cahills said they would continue pushing for upgrades to the road and streetscape from Laune Bridge to Bunkers Corner. Cahill praised the collaboration between the Council, elected members, Killorglin Chamber Alliance and Killorglin Archives Society, saying he looks forward to seeing the Courthouse restored for community use.

The girls can be proud of an excellent season that saw them reach the final and win the Shield earlier in the campaign. U16 Boys - Castleisland District Championship: Congratulations to Ballymac players Adrian O’Connor, Gearóid Joy, Eric Quirke, Rory O’Connor, Flynn Boyle, Harvey Leen and Neilus O’Connor who were part of the Castleisland District team that won the U16 County Championship title. U13 Boys Round 3: A 3-10 to 5-14 defeat away to Milltown/ Castlemaine in a high-scoring contest. A strong performance from the squad throughout despite the final scoreline. U12 Girls: Wrapped up their Go Games season with a great performance. A fantastic year of development for this talented group. U8 Girls: Hosted a blitz in Ballymac with great enthusiasm and skill on show from all the girls involved. ST PATS GAA NOTES Seniors - Relegation Final: Hard luck to the senior men who lost the Relegation Final away to Tarbert in Mountcoal, going down on a 1-11 to 1-08 scoreline in a tight contest. The club will regroup and come back stronger in 2027. U14 Boys - Central Region Shield Final: Congratulations to the U14 boys who won the Shield Final in a brilliant team display. A great achievement to cap a strong season of development. U12 Girls: Final Go Games of the season away, with the squad finishing the year on a high after a brilliant campaign. A special word for all the coaches who gave so much time and effort throughout the year.

U8 Girls: A fantastic end of season blitz in Blennerville alongside Dingle, Na Gaeil and St Pats, with sack races and fun rounding off a brilliant first year of football for many of the girls. Best of luck to St Brendan’s Board in the next round of the County Senior Championship against North Kerry, including club player Liam O’Sullivan and manager Derek O’Sullivan. Tralee Parnells Hurling and Camogie Club Junior Camogie Championship Final Round: The final group game takes place at home to Causeway this Friday September 18th at 7:45pm. Please come out and support this fantastic group of young ladies. Thanks to sponsor Acorn Landscaping for their continued support. U14 Camogie: A great win over Killarney recently with outstanding defending and clinical attacking play on show. Next up: home to Sliabh Luachra. U14 Hurling: Hard luck in defeat to Crotta, 3-18 to 3-15, in an evenly contested game in Kilflynn with excellent hurling from both teams. Academy Hurling: Just a few weeks left in the hurling season. Anyone who wants to give hurling a try before the season ends is welcome to join on Friday evenings from 6pm to 7pm in Caherslee. KERRY FC - SSE AIRTRICITY MEN’S FIRST DIVISION Kerry FC kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a hard-fought 1-0 home win over Cobh Ramblers at Mounthawk Park on Friday. Ryan Perez scored the only goal midway through the second half after excellent approach play from Cian Bargary on the right wing. Matthew Connor was barely tested throughout as Kerry’s defence produced a disciplined and composed performance. The win cuts the gap to the playoff places to four points with five games remaining. Kerry now travel to Athlone Town next Friday in a crucial away fixture. TRALEE ADVERTISER
