LEGAL MATTERS CORNER
MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES 8776-rated helmet, designed What Are the Rules Before specifically for faster electric Buying an E-Scooter? personal transport.
Q: I’m Sebastian, aged 18, and I’m considering buying an e-scooter for travelling to work because public transport does not suit my hours. What should I know? A: E-scooters can offer an economical and convenient commuting option, but both the scooter and its rider must comply with Irish law. A legal e-scooter must have a maximum speed of 20km/h, weigh no more than 25kg including its battery, and have a motor output not exceeding 400W. Its wheels must be at least 200mm in diameter and it cannot have a seat. It must also have front and rear lights, reflectors, brakes and a bell. Look for a CE mark, a manufacturer’s plate displaying its power, weight and maximum speed, and obtain a declaration of conformity from the supplier. Q: What safety rules apply? A: Since September 4, 2026, anyone riding an e-scooter on a public road must wear a helmet and high-visibility clothing. Riders must be at least 16, although increasing the minimum age to 18 is under consideration. A good-quality helmet is essential. Sebastian could consider an NTA
Q: Where can I ride it? A: E-scooters should use cycle lanes where available or keep to the left-hand side of roads. They are prohibited on footpaths, motorways and roads with speed limits exceeding 50km/h. Passengers cannot be carried, while using a mobile phone, headphones or earbuds when riding is prohibited. Drink-driving laws also apply. Q: Do I need insurance or a licence? A: A compliant e-scooter currently requires no registration, driving licence, motor tax or compulsory insurance. However, if Sebastian injures someone or damages property, he could be personally liable. Personal accident and liability insurance are therefore worth considering. Depending on the distance involved, an e-bike, bicycle or inexpensive car may also be practical. Lawquip: It’s not the destination, it’s the scoot.

“SNAPPED ON SOCIAL MEDIA” ...Good News Only!!!
We pick out some great photos posted on social media each week ...if you have any good ones please send them in... email traleeadvertiser@gmail.com or message us on our Facebook page... Enjoy! Heartfelt tribute from Tralee Tidy Towns after the passing of Mary O Brien this week “It is with great sadness that all of us at Tralee Tidy Towns heard of the passing of Mrs Mary O Brien - founder of Tralee Tidy Towns and mother of our chairperson Brendan O Brien. Though a Cork woman, she took to her adopted town with vigour and enthusiasm. She has left an extraordinary legacy, and all in the Tralee Tidy Towns network are so grateful to her for setting up an organisation that has benefitted so many of us and of course Tralee Town, in so many ways. So today, as we sympathise with Brendan and his family on the loss of a wonderful mother, we remember a lady who epitomized pride of place, who inspired others and all of us to do more for our beautiful town of Tralee. We will continue her work in honour of her outstanding contribution. May she rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam....Tralee Tidy Towns “

Tralee businesswoman launches monthly coffee meetups for local entrepreneurs Tralee entrepreneur Clodagh Moynihan is launching a monthly coffee meetup aimed at giving local business owners a space to connect, share struggles and swap advice. Moynihan, who runs Clodagh Moynihan Solutions, says running a small business can be isolating, and wants to build an informal support network for the town’s business community. She believes peer advice — from people who’ve faced the same hurdles, whether staffing, sales, work-life balance or motivation — is often the most valuable kind, and hopes the low-key format will encourage people to drop by, make connections and leave with fresh ideas. Gatherings will run from 10-11am on the last Friday of each month at Baily’s Corner, with no charge beyond your own drink and no need to book ahead. Drawing on over 15 years as Managing Director of a multinational group, Moynihan says she’s built a strong grasp of the pressures facing SMEs — insight she now channels into supporting growing businesses. The first meetup takes place Thursday, September 24 at 10am, before settling into its regular last-Friday slot. With our Print Edition, Online Edition, Facebook & Instagram... We got you covered!

KCYS Appoints Seamus Whitty as Chief Executive Officer Kerry Community Youth Service (KCYS) has announced the appointment of Seamus Whitty as its new Chief Executive Officer. A long-standing member of the Kerry youth work community, Seamus brings more than 25 years of experience working with young people across education, youth work and community development. Prior to joining KCYS, he served as Youth Development Officer with Kerry Education and Training Board, supporting youth services and initiatives across the county. Earlier in his career, he spent many years with Kerry Life Skills, a community charity delivering wellbeing and life-skills programmes throughout
Kerry, focusing on helping young people build resilience, confidence and positive mental health through participatory approaches. He has also contributed to research on youth wellbeing, exploring young people’s own experiences of programmes and the importance of their voice in shaping the supports developed for them. Chairperson of KCYS, Arlene Harmann, welcomed the appointment: “Seamus brings a wealth of experience in youth work and community development and a deep commitment to supporting young people. We are very much looking forward to working with him as KCYS continues to develop
and strengthen its work with young people and communities across Kerry.” Founded in 1971, KCYS is Kerry’s longestestablished youth organisation, working with thousands of young people each year through youth centres, outreach services and community programmes, delivered by staff alongside a strong network of volunteers. Speaking on his appointment, Seamus said: “Youth work is fundamentally about community and partnership... The only real expert in a young person’s life is the young
person themselves. I look forward greatly to working with the team at KCYS, and with our community and partner organisations across the county, to continue developing opportunities for young people and families in Kerry.”

Listowel Races: It’s Out Of This World! One of Ireland’s longest-established and most popular race meetings, the seven day Listowel Harvest Racing Festival, begins this Sunday and runs for seven days until Saturday, 26th September. The meeting is traditionally popular as a celebration of the year’s harvest, with people taking time off work and flying in from all over the world to enjoy the quality jump and flat racing, convivial atmosphere and good fun that have been synonymous with Listowel Races since 1858. Highlights over the week include Kinisla Family Day on Sunday, with a special appearance by Alfie the Alien; the Grade A €200,000 Guinness Kerry National on Wednesday; the Ryle Menswear Best Dressed Man Competition on Thursday; and McElligotts Kia Ladies Day on Friday, featuring judges Aoife Dunican and Frankie Foster, with a fabulous holiday to Sorrento as the first prize. The festival concludes on Saturday with its 15th Sustainable Style Competition, celebrating vintage, pre-loved and creative fashion, while live music, TG4 coverage, family entertainment, value party packs and corporate hospitality add to the experience throughout the week. €1.36 Million Investment Strengthens Aqua Dome’s Future 2025 because of the significant Aqua Dome Tralee has reported a satisfactory financial performance for 2025 while continuing a major programme of investment in its facilities. Profits for the year were reduced by significant spending on essential repairs, maintenance and upgrades. The latest financial results cover the performance of the new Company Limited by Guarantee, which took over the trade, business and assets of Tralee Waterworld plc in late 2024. During 2025, the Aqua Dome completed the replacement of its airhandling units and water-filtration system at a cost of €865,000. Grant funding of €315,000 was secured through the Community Recognition
Programme towards this essential work. Further improvements included the complete refurbishment of the public and changing-area bathrooms, the replacement of locker mechanisms and the extensive redevelopment of Aqua Golf. The popular outdoor attraction reopened in July, with total expenditure on these projects expected to reach approximately €500,000. This work received €200,000 in support from the LEADER Programme. Aqua Dome Chairman Brian Durran said continued investment was essential to maintain and enhance the 33-year-old facility for the local community and visitors to Kerry. “While profits were lower in
expenditure incurred, the business remains in a positive position,” he said. Mr Durran added that July trading was satisfactory despite the exceptionally fine weather. The Board remains optimistic that the company will continue to operate profitably during 2026, although rising overhead costs remain a concern. He also thanked his fellow directors and paid tribute to the Aqua Dome’s management and staff, many of whom have worked there since it opened in 1993. The Aqua Dome is open from 10am to 10pm Monday to Friday and from 10am to 7pm at weekends and on

Maria’s Blanket of Hope A beautiful handcrafted blanket created by Tralee businesswoman Maria McCarthy will be raffled to support Kerry Cancer Support Group’s free Healthlink Transport service. Maria, owner of Maria’s Wool Shop in Milk Market Lane, spent the summer crocheting the colourful “Say It with Flowers” blanket. Designed by Eleanora Tully of Coastal Crochet, the heirloomquality piece is intended to be treasured and passed down through generations. Maria has supported Kerry Cancer Support Group since around 2019 through its Blankets of Hope
initiative. Her shop has helped supply knitted and crocheted blankets made by individual crafters and craft groups to people using the charity’s services. “Kerry Cancer Support Group do incredible work providing support and free transport for people travelling for cancer treatment and appointments,” Maria said. “I have huge admiration for them.” Breda from Kerry Cancer Support Group thanked Maria for contributing her time, talent and skill. “The finished blanket is really beautiful. Whoever wins it will have a wonderfully uplifting and cheerful piece of craftsmanship to enjoy for
many years,” she said. Every raffle ticket purchased will help keep the charity’s Healthlink vehicles on the road, providing free, supported transport for cancer patients across Kerry, West Cork and West Limerick who must travel for vital treatment and hospital appointments. Tickets are available from Maria’s Wool Shop, Milk Market Lane, Tralee, or online at iDonate.ie. The winning ticket will be drawn at Maria’s Wool Shop on October 1. By entering, supporters could win something truly beautiful while helping local cancer patients access essential care.

He knows I have poor eyesight, so He’s fixed it so when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, poof! The light goes on. When I’m done, poof! The light goes off.” “Wow, that’s incredible,” the doctor says. A little later in the day, the doctor calls Larry’s wife. “Bonnie,” he says, “Larry is doing fine! But I had to call you because I’m in awe of his relationship with God. TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER KERINS O’RAHILLYS GAA CLUB NOTES Senior Ladies Championship: The 2026 campaign ended with a heartbreaking one-point defeat to Dingle at Strand Road, 2-08 to 2-09. The Blues led by six at half time before two quick Dingle goals brought them right back into it and the visitors edged over the line by the minimum in an intensely fought second half. Despite the result there are huge positives heading into next season with the seniors now preparing for Division 2 football. A brilliant campaign and a fantastic effort from the entire panel throughout the season. Senior Ladies Championship Semi-Final: A 2-13 to 1-05 defeat to Southern Gaels in the county semifinal in Farranfore. Na Gaeil trailed by five at half time before a strong third-quarter spell brought them back to within two, but Southern Gaels finished with five unanswered points to pull clear. U14 Hurling: Hard luck to the U14 boys who lost to Crotta in Kilflynn, 3-18 to 3-15, in an evenly contested game with outstanding play from both teams. Academy Hurling: Just a few weeks left in the hurling season. Anyone who wants to give hurling a try is welcome to join on Friday evenings from 6pm to 7pm in Caherslee. KERRY FC - SSE AIRTRICITY MEN’S FIRST DIVISION Kerry FC suffered a 3-1 defeat away to UCD AFC in Belfield on Friday in a result that leaves their playoff hopes hanging by a thread with six games remaining. UCD took the lead through Goodness Ogbonna before Ryan Perez equalised with a brilliant individual effort. UCD retook the lead through Charles Akinrintayo and added a third through a controversial Mamadou Fofana penalty that Matthew Connor got a strong hand to but could not keep out. Kerry pushed for a second but could not find the equaliser. The defeat leaves Kerry five points off the playoff places. A must-win home game against Cobh Ramblers at Mounthawk Park on Friday is now critical.
