LEGAL MATTERS CORNER

Tips in relation to selling your Home.

Barry and Susan want to sell their town house and are hoping to sell quickly in the rising market so they can move to a location further out the country where they can buy a larger property with a bigger garden for their children. They are wondering what is the best way to speed up their sale with the minimum of hassle and stress.

We have often heard it said that to be prepared is half or more of the battle and for Barry and Susan there are a few things that they can do that will help the sale process go far more smoothly. Many solicitors only hear that they are involved in a property sale after the house has been sold and it may have been on the market for several months when all the preparatory work could have been done. Then the preparatory work must be fast-tracked and often this is not possible due to issues that arise which could have been a work in progress when the property was on the market and getting bids in.

The Irish Law Society has outlined 7 areas where issues can arise as follows:

1. Documentation needs to be gathered and make sure it is with your solicitor.

2. Obtain the title deeds if there is a mortgage they are with the bank/building society otherwise where are they. If they are lost, they may have to be reconstituted.

3. Is there full planning permission for the property and any changes e.g. extension or change of use, shed, porch, or lean to. Is it compliant with building regulations. Is a further application for planning permission or retention needed.

4. How is the property accessed is it on a public road, is there proof of this or is there a right of way to the property is it registered?

5. Is there water and how it is obtained? E.g. mains water or group water scheme.

6. Sewage treatment how does it work? Septic tank or Mains sewer.

TD Pa Daly Slams Lack of Notice Over Hot School Meals Suspension

Sinn Féin TD for Kerry, Pa Daly, has demanded answers as to why parents received no warning in June or July that hot school meals provided by The Lunch Bag would be discontinued. Deputy Daly said many Kerry parents had contacted him with concerns, particularly as food insecurity is already widespread. Research shows one in five parents skip meals to feed their children, rising to one in three in lone-parent families.

“With the government set to cut cost-of-living supports in Budget 2026 and food prices soaring, families are under immense pressure,” Daly said. “Ending hot school meals without notice has left parents in a very difficult position.”

He called on the Minister to confirm how many schools are affected, explain delays in applying new Food Safety Authority standards, and outline whether any interim support will be provided before a new supplier begins in January.

Starts Thursday 26th June

MEDICAL CORNER

Dr Pieter van der Merwe answers

Menopause

Q: What is menopause?

A: Menopause is the natural biological process marking the end of a woman’s menstrual cycles. It’s diagnosed after 12 consecutive months without a period, typically occurring between ages 45 and 55.

Q: What causes menopause?

A: Menopause occurs as the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and progesterone, the hormones that regulate menstruation and fertility.

Q: What are the common symptoms?

A: Symptoms vary but may include hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, vaginal dryness, sleep problems, weight gain, and decreased libido.

Q: How long do symptoms last?

A: Menopausal symptoms can begin during perimenopause (the transitional period) and last several years, often 4–7 years in total.

Q: Can menopause affect mental health?

A: Yes, hormonal changes can contribute to mood swings, anxiety, and even depression. It’s important to seek help if emotional symptoms interfere with daily life.

Q: Are there treatments available?

A: Yes. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is one option. Others include lifestyle changes, non-hormonal medications, and alternative therapies like acupuncture or herbal remedies.

Q: Does menopause affect bone health?

A: Yes, the drop in estrogen can lead to bone density loss, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. Calcium, vitamin D, and weight-bearing exercise can help.

Q: When should I see a doctor?

A: If symptoms are severe or impact your quality of life, it’s wise to consult a healthcare provider for a personalized plan.

Q: Is menopause the same for everyone?

A: No. Every woman experiences menopause differently, with unique symptom patterns and emotional responses.

Dance Takes Centre Stage as Siamsa Tíre Unveils Autumn Season

Siamsa Tíre is embracing the arrival of autumn with a rich and varied programme of performances, screenings, workshops, and events. At the heart of the season is dance, celebrated in three very different ways across September. The season opens on Friday, 6 September with the premiere of A Dance to Remember, an autobiographical documentary by Donal Dineen, produced by James Kelly of Feenish Production Company with the support of the Kerry Film Bursary and Kerry International Film Festival. This deeply personal film explores Sliabh Luachra’s distinctive traditional music through the lens of Dineen’s family history. The evening continues with a Q&A, followed by live set dancing and music, before Dineen returns to the stage with a special edition of his acclaimed

club night, Backstory. It promises to be a unique fusion of heritage and contemporary rhythm.

On Thursday 11 and Friday 12 September, the internationally renowned Teaċ Daṁsa, under choreographer Michael KeeganDolan, presents the final Irish performances of How To Be A Dancer in Seventy-Two Thousand Easy Lessons. Performed by Rachel Poirier, this acclaimed piece blends

dance,

theatre, music, and ritual in a moving and imaginative journey that bends the lines between memory and mythology.

From 15 and 18 September, audiences can take to the floor themselves with Fun Fitness Adult Dance Classes, led by dancer and choreographer Justin Walsh. With a choice of Musical Theatre or Jig Fit, these inclusive eight-week courses are designed to energise, entertain,

White Horse Guitar Club bring new album Sos Beag to Ballygarry Estate

From their beginnings in a Ballincollig pub to sold-out shows across Ireland, The White Horse Guitar Club have become one of the country’s most distinctive and loved musical collectives. Now, the eleven-piece group is set to bring their powerful live sound to Ballygarry Estate, Tralee, on Saturday 27 September, as part of their nationwide tour. Formed in 2012, the band is celebrated for its soaring harmonies, heartfelt storytelling, and the unique energy of eleven voices and guitars played in unison. What started as a casual gathering of friends has grown into a musical brotherhood that has drawn praise from BBC’s Cerys Matthews, Hot Press, and even President Michael D. Higgins,

who described their music as “good for the heart and soul.”

This year, they release their longawaited second studio album, Sos Beag (out Friday, 3 October). Recorded in their hometown pub, the album takes its name from the Irish for “a small break”, a fitting reflection of the band’s philosophy of slowing down, reconnecting, and finding joy in shared song. Their Tralee performance promises to be an unforgettable night of camaraderie, humour, and music that resonates deeply with audiences. With previous tours selling out venues from Cork Opera House to St Canice’s Cathedral, tickets for Ballygarry Estate are expected to be in high demand.

and uplift.

Angela Ryan Whyte, CEO of Siamsa Tíre, highlights the season’s diversity: “Dance has the power to connect, inspire and energise. This programme offers all that and more.” Beyond dance, the autumn season also includes music, theatre, comedy, exhibitions, workshops, and family events. Full details and booking are available at www.siamsatire.com.

Kerry FC Stun League Leaders with Thrilling 3-3 Draw in Dundalk

Kerry FC earned a famous point away to league leaders Dundalk in a thrilling six-goal clash at Oriel Park. The Kingdom travelled to Louth buoyed by back-to-back league wins and a recent FAI Cup triumph. They struck first on 22 minutes when Ronan Teahan’s brilliant solo effort put them ahead. Dundalk equalised from the spot through Daryl Horgan, but Kerry responded instantly, Robbie Cleary heading home for 2-1 at half-time.

The second half exploded into life. Horgan levelled again just after the restart, before Teahan restored Kerry’s lead with a stunning long-

range strike. Yet Dundalk hit back once more, Keith Ward making it 3-3 on 50 minutes.

From there, the hosts dominated possession, but Kerry’s defence and goalkeeper Matthew Connor stood firm. Connor produced several crucial saves as Dundalk pressed hard, while Kerry threatened on the counter. Despite heavy pressure in the final stages, the visitors held on to secure a hard-fought point. It was Kerry’s first-ever result against the league leaders in their short history—a marker of progress, though tinged with frustration at having led three times.

Kerry County Council Urges Vigilance on the School Run

With schools reopening, Kerry County Council is reminding motorists, parents, and students to prioritise road safety during the busy school run. Thousands of children travel daily on foot, bike, bus, or car, making vigilance essential. Parents and guardians are urged to ensure children are visible, use crossings correctly, and exit vehicles on the footpath side rather than onto the road.

Declan Keogh, the Council’s Road Safety Officer, warned of the dangers of near-miss incidents caused by inattention. “Drivers need to slow down, be patient, and allow

extra time and space. Dropping children into traffic queues is highly dangerous and must be avoided,” he stressed.

There are 15 School Warden Crossings across the county, where wardens legally stop traffic to allow children to cross safely. Failure to comply is a prosecutable offence. The Council’s Road Safety Officer will also visit schools this term to deliver road safety education programmes.

Kerry Coastlines Show Big Improvement in National Litter Survey

Kerry’s beaches and harbours have recorded encouraging progress in the latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) coastal survey, which found cleaner shorelines nationwide and fewer areas falling into poor categories. Of the 33 coastal and waterway locations inspected by An Taisce during June and July, 17 were judged “clean,” a 50% improvement on the previous survey. Only three areas were rated “littered,” with none placed in the lowest “heavily littered” category.

Locally, Ballybunion and Portmagee were deemed “moderately littered,” while Dingle slipped to “littered.” Yet inspectors praised each location for strong presentation, colourful public spaces and facilities, noting that much of the remaining litter was marine-related or caught in hard-toreach areas. Small accumulations of cigarette butts, coffee cups and food wrappers were the most common finds. IBAL’s Conor Horgan described the results as “by far the most favourable in eight years

of surveys,” crediting community volunteers, council investment and new initiatives such as the Deposit Return Scheme, which cut plastic bottles and cans by 30%.

With September’s Big Beach Clean expected to mobilise 600 groups nationwide, Kerry communities are being encouraged to build on this momentum and push their coastlines to “clean” status in the year ahead.

Minister Foley Welcomes Confirmation That Children Aged 5–8 Can Now Travel Free on Public Transport

Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry T.D Norma Foley has welcomed confirmation from her Cabinet Colleague, Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien T.D that children aged 5 to 8 will now be eligible for free travel on all Transport for Ireland (TFI) services.

From today, some 263,000 children nationwide can travel free with a TFI Leap Card.

The scheme applies to all TFI public transport services, including Local Link, Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann, GoAhead Ireland, Iarnród Éireann, and LUAS.

Children under 5 already travel free, and this expansion ensures no child is charged for public transport until their ninth birthday.

Minister Foley said: “This is a really positive development for families in Kerry and right across the country. Providing free travel for children up to their ninth birthday eases the financial burden on households and makes public transport a far more attractive option for families. It also delivers on a clear commitment in the Programme for Government to make transport more

affordable, more accessible, and more sustainable.

Government is committed to better connectivity, sustainable transport, and easing the cost of living for families - today’s announcement is another step in that direction.”

For more information on the application process and the Child 5-8 Leap Card, parents can visit: https://about.leapcard.ie/child-5-8tfi-leap-card
