LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Martha has booked an adventure group trip with an Irish travel company hiking for 7 days in the beautiful Dolomites mountain range in Italy which is on the UNESCO world heritage list. The mountains range between 1000 metres to 3000 metres in terms of climbing and the holiday includes a guide, food and accommodation and luggage transfers so that all she has to take is a day pack of a size of her choice when she is his hiking around the high mountains and passes.

She is booking her own flights A week before she is to go she is informed that there will be no luggage transfers and she will have to carry all her luggage and gear from accommodation to accommodation. What are her rights.

The package holidays legislation which governs package holidays is quite strong legislation brought in on foot of an EU Directive so is Europe wide in effect. It governs a package holiday which is where a total price is paid and the holiday includes at least two services e.g. transport, accommodation , food, guided tours. Even if the flights are booked separately it can still be a package holiday. In advance of booking you should be informed of • • • • • • • • •

The total price, including any taxes or additional fees Arrangements for payment, including any deposit to be paid Destination and duration The type of transport involved and departure times and places The location, type and category of accommodation Meal plan, if any Cancellation arrangements for the organiser and for you Details of any excursions or other services included The complaints procedure if the organiser fails to carry out their part of the contract

The trading name, geographical address, telephone number and email address of the organiser and, if applicable, the retailer of the package (if separate) The contact details of the organiser’s local representative or contact point in case you need assistance while away General information on passport and visa requirements, and vaccinations Any insurance requirements

Martha could have the right to cancel your package holiday and get a full refund if there are unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances at or near your destination that could affect your holiday or your travel. E.g. a pandemic.

Otherwise she needs to complain to the tour organiser and see if they will remedy it by providing alternative luggage transport. If important parts of the package are not provided Martha could look for a price reduction. If the organiser does not fix the issue Martha could get alternative luggage transport and claim the price back. If the issue seriously affects Martha’s holiday which it is likely to do as it means trudging the dolomites with a heavy backpack and it is not sorted out, she could cancel the contract without paying a cancellation fee and ask for compensation. If it is not provided there is always a claim to the small claims court with a €2000 limit. If she goes ahead with the holiday and it turns out as disastrous as she suspects it will she can complain during the tour to the organiser and on her return which must be within 28 days of the trip to include as much evidence as possible of the issue in this complaint.

Foley Welcomes €2bn Water Infrastructure Investment Kerry TD and Minister for Children, Disability and Equality Norma Foley has

welcomed Government approval of a new €2 billion capital investment in Uisce Éireann aimed at supporting housing growth across Ireland.

The funding will expand water and wastewater infrastructure, helping to remove capacity constraints that have delayed housing developments and supporting the delivery of up to 300,000 new homes by 2030.

The investment includes €1.7 billion for the Growth Investment Programme, which will upgrade infrastructure in 72 towns and settlements, while a further €300 million will support wastewater improvements in smaller towns and villages with populations under 2,000.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Foley said the investment would strengthen essential water services and wastewater treatment capacity, helping unlock new housing developments in towns, villages and rural communities throughout Kerry while supporting the county’s future growth.

Kerry FC Boost Squad with CONGRATULATIONS International Midfielder ROBYN! Milltown FC is delighted to announce that U14 & U15 player Robyn Horgan was selected for the Football Association of Simon Lüchinger Ireland’s (FAI) U15 Girls National Pathways Programme and Kerry FC have strengthened their squad with the signing of Liechtenstein international midfielder Simon Lüchinger on loan from Austrian 2. Liga club Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz until the end of the 2026 season.

The 23-year-old becomes manager Colin Healy’s first addition of the summer transfer window. Lüchinger has earned 36 senior international caps, featuring in FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship qualifiers, as well as the UEFA Nations League.

A former captain of Liechtenstein’s Under-21 side, he spent four years with hometown club Vaduz, winning four consecutive Liechtenstein Cups before moving to Austria last season.

Welcoming the signing, Colin Healy said Lüchinger has already impressed in training and believes his international experience will be a major asset as Kerry push for a historic League of Ireland playoff place this season.

Tralee is gearing up for one of the highlights of the summer as Féile Thrá Lí – Tralee Street Festival returns from Friday, August 14 to Tuesday, August 18, bringing five days of free entertainment to the heart of the town during the internationally renowned Rose of Tralee Festival.

Organised by Féile Thrá Lí CLG in partnership with Kerry County Council and supported by Fáilte Ireland, the festival has rapidly become a favourite on Kerry’s summer calendar. Each year it attracts thousands of visitors, transforming Tralee into a vibrant

Throughout the five-day festival, the town centre will come alive with a packed programme featuring live music, colourful parades, street performers, family shows, food and craft stalls, wellness activities and interactive entertainment. Families can look forward to a fantastic line-up on Sunday, including the ever-popular K-Pop Demon Hunters Live Show and

the Taylor Swiftly Tribute Show, promising plenty of music, dancing and audience participation for younger festivalgoers.

As evening falls, the entertainment continues with performances from some of Ireland’s best-loved live acts.

‘Super Sunday’ Returns as Gerry Young Brings Festival Favourite Back to Tralee One of the standout attractions of the Rose of Tralee International Festival & Feile Thrá Lí is set to return this month as Super Sunday, proudly sponsored once again by Young Homes, promises another unforgettable evening of free entertainment in the town centre.

The event is backed by Tralee native Gerry Young, who has lived in the UK for more than five decades but remains deeply connected to his hometown.

Through his international construction company, Young Homes, Gerry is sponsoring Super Sunday for the fifth consecutive year.

“Tralee is still home to me,” he said.

“I may have left over 50 years ago, but I always come back. Last year

the atmosphere was incredible and seeing Denny Street packed with people was something I’ll never forget. Fair play to everyone involved – putting on an event like this takes a huge effort, but they’ve created something really special.”

This year’s Super Sunday takes place on Sunday, August 16, with Denny Street once again transformed into a giant open-air concert venue.

Festivalgoers can look forward to outstanding tribute performances celebrating Oasis, Robbie Williams and Qween, with live music running from 7.30pm until 11pm.

As an added bonus, Gerry is also bringing back the hugely popular IE/ DC AC/DC tribute show, which will rock The Square on Saturday, August 15, from 9.30pm.

Following a crowd of more than 14,000 people last year, organisers are expecting another spectacular

turnout for what has become one of the Rose Festival’s most anticipated free events.

New Edition of Milltown History Book to Mark Author’s 40th Anniversary A treasured account of Milltown’s past is set to reach a new generation of readers with the release of a special anniversary edition of “Milltown: Memories of Other Days”, marking 40 years since the death of its author, Denis ‘Denny’ Sugrue.

Originally published in the 1980s and long out of print, the book has been carefully republished by the Milltown History and Heritage Society. The updated 132-page edition will be officially launched at Milltown Community Hall on Saturday, August 22, as part of National Heritage Week.

Denis Sugrue was widely respected

as an auctioneer, librarian, photographer and local historian. His original book captured the stories, people and traditions that shaped Milltown, while his popular weekly “Milltown Notes” column in The Kerryman documented local life for almost four decades.

Edited by Dr John Knightly and Dr Owen O’Shea, the new edition preserves Sugrue’s original work while adding previously unpublished and colourised photographs from his extensive collection, along with a selection of his memorable newspaper columns.

“Denis Sugrue was ahead of his

time in recognising the importance of recording local history,” said Dr Owen O’Shea. “His work provides an invaluable insight into the social and cultural life of Milltown, and we are delighted to make it available once again.”

The launch evening will celebrate Sugrue’s legacy with music, songs, stories and a display of his historic writings. The book also features a foreword by his daughter Maria and grandson Paul.

The event begins at 8pm and is open to everyone. Copies of the book will be available to purchase on the night. The project

Young Footballers to Battle for Rose of Tralee Cup Honours Played under modified 13-a-side Tralee will welcome some of the county’s brightest young Gaelic football talent on Saturday, August 15, as 16 teams compete in the annual Rose of Tralee Cup Under 13 Football Blitz,which was launched and is proudly sponsored by Bon Secours Hospital Tralee.

The competition will be played across two venues, with Na Gaeil, Killeen hosting Groups A and B, while Healy Park, Ballyrickard stages Groups C and D. Throw-in for the opening games is at 10.30am, following registration at 10am.

Clubs from across Kerry will be joined by St James of Galway, with teams competing for both the prestigious Rose of Tralee Cup and Shield titles.

Strong Turnout for Ballymac Vintage Club’s 16th Annual Classic Car Run

More than 100 classic vehicles took part in the 16th Annual Ballymac Vintage Club Classic Car and Honda 50 Run, with enthusiasts refusing to let wet weather dampen spirits on Sunday morning. A superb variety of classic cars, vans, campers and Honda 50 motorcycles gathered for the popular event, with several vintage vehicles making their first appearance at a classic motoring event in Kerry. The morning began with a relaxed Cars and Coffee gathering, giving participants and visitors the opportunity to admire the vehicles, chat with fellow enthusiasts and enjoy refreshments before setting off.

This year’s event raised funds for St John of God Oileán Beo, Castleisland, which provides essential services for adults with intellectual disabilities, and the Kerry Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes, supporting sick and infirm pilgrims alongside the volunteers, carers and medical teams who accompany them. Organisers also thanked the public for their generosity during the on-street collection in Castleisland on Saturday, with the total amount raised to be announced shortly.

A large selection of spot prizes was presented throughout the morning thanks to the generous support of local businesses and individuals.

Special recognition was given to the event’s main sponsors, BG Motors Killarney, Brownes Agri Steel, Castleisland, and O’Riada’s Bar & Restaurant,

Ballymac, whose backing helped make the event possible. The scenic route took participants through the quiet back roads around Castleisland, with a refreshment stop in Brosna before continuing towards Knocknagoshel, where the event concluded. Refreshments were kindly provided by the Knocknagoshel Meals on Wheels team.

Ballymac Vintage Club expressed its appreciation to everyone who supported, volunteered and participated in another successful event. The club’s next outing, a Car and Tractor Run, is scheduled for Sunday, September 20, with further details to be announced on its Facebook page.

Spotlight on one of the Sports Ambassador at Manor West Leisure Club Sean McConologue / ITF Taekwon-Do / Chosun TKD The team at Manor West Leisure Club caugjht up with one of their Sports Ambassadors for 2026 ; Sean McConologue What first made you want to start Tae kwon do, and what excited you about competing?: I started when I was 3 or 4 years old when I realised that GAA and ball sports in general weren’t really my strong suit. With a history of martial arts in the family my parents pushed me to start Taekwon-Do with Barry O’Connor in Chosun TKD. I’m naturally a very competitive person so I’ve always wanted to put myself up against the best in my sport consistently and competing was the easiest way to do that.

What keeps you motivated to enter competitions, even when training gets tough?

I would say the support of my teammates and friends has been pivotal in keeping me going to competitions and giving 100% in training. The atmosphere in the club

is so encouraging and supportive that you feel like you aren’t ever alone walking into a competition or a session.

How does stepping onto the mat for a match make you feel, and why do you enjoy that experience?

Even after so many years, competing both nationally and internationally, I still get a bit nervous walking on for the first round. I think that’s the thing that drives me most to compete, the feeling of pressure and a level of responsibility to perform to the standard expected of me.

How do competitions help you grow as an athlete or as a person?

Although I love winning or getting on the podium, I think losing early in a competition can be as much, if not more beneficial to me. It shows

me that although I’ve come a long way from the start, I still have things to work on. This keeps me humble and sharp, increasing the want to get better and better at the same time.

What are your long term goals in Tae kwon do, and how do competitions help you reach them?

I would love to become a consistent competitor for Team Ireland in Taekwon-Do and reach the podium on the international stage. Every competition, big or small, helps as it gives me an opportunity to understand my mind more and the way I’ll react under pressure. By doing this in smaller, local competitions, I can improve my ability to stay calm and perform under stress when I reach international stages.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER KERINS O’RAHILLYS GAA CLUB NOTES Inter-County Commiserations: Sincere commiserations to both the Kerry Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s football teams following their All-Ireland Final defeats. Both squads showed immense effort and dedication throughout their campaigns and everyone at Strand Road remains incredibly proud of their achievements this season.

Senior Championship: The wait is over as the Senior team launch their Kerry Petroleum Intermediate Football Club Championship campaign. Round 1 of Group 4 sees them travel to face Castleisland Desmonds in Currow on Saturday August 8th at 7pm. A massive Strand Road turnout is needed, so get out to Currow and make some noise!

Kerry U15 All-Ireland Champions: A huge well done to the Kerry U15 squad on winning their All-Ireland Final against Cork. Five Strand Road players were involved — congratulations to Kyle, Kipras, Jamie, Cameron and Rían.

Kerry North U16 Ted Webb Shield: Congratulations to Cian Fitzgerald who represented Kerry North U16s in their 4-18 to 2-14 Shield Final victory over Laois at UL. Special mention also to Ed Lacey who managed the side to their brilliant triumph.

U14 Boys: Massive congratulations on a fantastic win over Ballyduff in the Central League.

U12 Girls: A brilliant Go Games display at home against Fossa, with both sides producing high-quality football.

Summer Camp 2026: A brilliant week of football in the sun concluded with the annual “AllIreland Friday” competition. A sincere thanks to all who helped make it such a success.

Mothers and Others: Hosted Ballymacelligott for a great friendly match played in wonderful community spirit, rounded off with tea and plenty of chat afterwards.

GAA CLUB NOTES Senior Championship: Round 1 of the Club Championship at home to Templenoe takes place on Sunday August 9th at 4pm. Get down and support the lads!

Minor Boys: A dramatic end to the season as the minors won the Division 1 Shield Final against Gaeil an Tuaiscirt in Finuge on penalties after extra time, with Jake Carmody converting the decisive spot kick.

A brilliant way to finish what was a challenging season for this resilient group. Next up: the County Championship, beginning with East Kerry on August 13th.

U14 Boys: Good wins over John Mitchels and Laune Rangers in the Central League.

U12 Boys: Both teams produced excellent performances away to Milltown, and hosted Kerins O’Rahillys in two competitive games in Connolly Park. The U11s were narrowly defeated in the final of the Naas Tournament after an outstanding day of football.

U16 Boys: A fine win over Listowel in the County League recently.

The U10 Go Games continue with upcoming fixtures against Rathmore on Wednesday August 26th and Ardfert at home to follow.

Commiserations to Dylan, Joe, Armin and all the Kerry panel on the All-Ireland Final defeat to Mayo.

The club also extends condolences to the family of Eileen Quinn.

NA GAEIL GAA CLUB NOTES Kerry Senior Ladies: Huge disappointment for the Kerry senior ladies who lost the All-Ireland Final by the minimum margin after last-minute drama. Despite the result the girls can be very proud of a wonderful year. Well done to Na Gaeil players Deirdre, Mary, Jadyn, Megan, Aoife and manager Mark Bourke on a brilliant campaign.

Kerry Development Squads: Well done to Na Gaeil players Dean O’Leary, Andy Costello, Ben O’Sullivan and Daniel Diggins who played brilliantly as Kerry U15s won the Adam Mangan Kilconfert Cup Final over Cork, 5-14 to 3-03, in Ballyvourney. Also well done to Eoin Tansley, Danny Brick and

Senior Ladies Development League Final: Congratulations to the Na Gaeil B team who won the Senior Ladies Development League Final, defeating Southern Gaels B, 1-13 to 2-08, in Killeen last Wednesday evening.

Sympathy is extended to Johnny Maunsell and family on the passing of his brother Michael, and to Catherine Moynihan and family on the passing of her father Michael O’Shea.

ST PATS GAA NOTES Seniors: A narrow 1-13 to 1-14 defeat away to Waterville in the Kerry Petroleum Junior Premier Round 1, in a fast-paced, physical game that went right to the wire.
