Kerry Wild Bee Festival Creates a Buzz at Tralee Bay Wetlands

Nature lovers from across Kerry, around Ireland and overseas gathered at Tralee Bay Wetlands Ecology Park over the weekend for another highly successful Kerry Wild Bee Festival 2026. Organised by Transition Kerry, Tralee Bay Wetlands Ecology Park and the Irish Wildlife Trust Kerry Branch, the two-day festival featured an inspiring programme of talks, workshops, guided walks and family activities celebrating Ireland’s native pollinators and the vital role they play in protecting biodiversity. This year’s theme, “Developing Community Resilience with the Help of Our Pollinators,” explored how restoring habitats and creating ecological corridors for wild bees can also reduce flood risk, store carbon, strengthen biodiversity and improve community wellbeing.

One of the highlights was an engaging discussion involving Ballybunion Nature Group, Castlegregory Tidy Towns and Tralee Tidy Towns, showcasing how local communities are making a real difference through pollinator-friendly initiatives in towns, villages, gardens and public spaces across Kerry. Festival events also included fruit tree planting along the Tralee to Fenit Greenway with the Friends of the Greenway Community Group, a guided ecological corridor walk, wild bee identification workshops and practical biodiversity demonstrations. Families enjoyed a range of creative activities, including willow bee mobile making with Phil McSweeney, while TIMBER returned with its ever-popular plant displays. The organisers thanked Kerry

County Council, the Ceangal Local Authority Heritage Programme, volunteers, speakers, artists, participating community groups and the staff of Tralee Bay Wetlands for helping deliver another memorable

celebration of nature, biodiversity and community action. The festival programme will continue later this month with an outreach visit to Ballybunion Nature Group.

Kerry Rose Escorts Launch Mental Health Fundraiser with Coffee Morning The five Kerry Rose Escorts for the 2026 Rose of Tralee Festival are inviting the public to support a special Coffee Morning in aid of Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland (YSPI) this Friday, July 10, from 10am to 1pm at Kirby’s Brogue Inn, Tralee. The event marks the official launch of the group’s “Up & Down Challenge”, an ambitious fundraising campaign that will see the Escorts climb Ireland’s highest mountain before taking to the skies for a charity skydive, all in support of youth mental health and suicide prevention. This year’s Kerry Rose Escorts – Daithí Fitzgerald, Ethan O’Connor, Kevin Ross, Simon Corridon and Connor O’Donoghue – selected Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland as their chosen charity in recognition of the growing mental health challenges facing young people.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Daithí Fitzgerald said they wanted to use their role as Rose Escorts to encourage open conversations around mental health and remind people that support is always available. Simon Corridon said the Rose of Tralee Festival is about community and bringing people together, making it the ideal platform to raise awareness of an issue affecting so many families across Ireland. The campaign’s name symbolises the emotional “ups and downs” experienced throughout life. Kevin Ross said the mountain climb and skydive reflect that journey while raising funds for an organisation providing invaluable education, counselling and suicide prevention services for young people. Everyone is welcome to attend Friday’s coffee morning, while

donations can also be made through the “Kerry Rose Escorts Fundraising for Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland”

GoFundMe page, which is linked across the Escorts’ social media platforms.

Friday as Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien TD visited Kerry to unveil a series of major transport, active travel and road safety projects across the county. Joined by Minister for Children, Disability and Equality Norma Foley TD and Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council Cllr Mikey Sheehy, Minister O’Brien cut the ribbon on the new 1.25km relief road at Listellick. The route links the R556 Abbeydorney Road with the Forge Cross Roundabout on the R878, improving access to Munster Technological University and the Tralee Bypass. Construction began in early 2025 and was funded by the Department of Transport. During his visit, the Minister also officially opened the latest sections of the South Kerry Greenway in Glenbeigh, bringing almost 10km of the popular walking and cycling route into public use, while new Active Travel schemes at Park Road and Rock Road in Killarney were also unveiled. Road safety improvements under the Safe Routes to School programme at Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School in Tralee and Scoil Mhuire in Killorglin were also officially opened, providing safer walking and cycling facilities for students. Minister O’Brien said the Government has allocated almost €50 million this year towards transport projects in Kerry to improve connectivity, encourage active travel and enhance road safety. Cllr Mikey Sheehy welcomed the investment, describing it as an important milestone in delivering safer roads, improved recreational amenities and better transport infrastructure for communities throughout Kerry.photos by Domnick Walsh

Lixnaw’s Martin Stackpoole Urges Kerry Clubs to Join Mental Fitness Programme Former Kerry hurler Martin Stackpoole from Lixnaw is encouraging GAA clubs across Kerry to take part in this year’s Movember Ahead of the Game initiative, which aims to strengthen young players’ mental fitness both on and off the field. Martin, who has spoken openly about his own battle with gambling addiction and the importance of seeking help, now works as a

facilitator with the programme, helping players, parents and coaches develop the confidence to talk about mental wellbeing. Since its launch in 2024, more than 17,000 participants have taken part in over 650 workshops held in GAA clubs nationwide. Delivered by trained facilitators from the Gaelic Players Association, the sessions provide practical tools to build resilience, recognise mental health

challenges and support teammates. Speaking at the launch, Martin said that looking after mental fitness is every bit as important as physical fitness and encouraged Kerry clubs to get involved. Supported by Movember, the GAA, the GPA, Healthy Ireland and the HSE National Office for Suicide Prevention, this year’s campaign, “The Most Important Team Talk,” encourages clubs to create

environments where conversations about mental wellbeing become a normal and valued part of team life.

Killorglin Set for New Ambulance Base Boost A new National Ambulance Service ambulance and crew are set to be based in Killorglin, subject to securing a suitable base, following confirmation that funding has been approved for an additional ambulance and six paramedic posts in Kerry. Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill welcomed the development, saying a Killorglin base would significantly improve emergency response times across Mid Kerry and the Iveragh Peninsula. Deputy Cahill said the National Ambulance Service has identified Killorglin as the preferred location due to its strategic position, while discussions are ongoing regarding potential accommodation, including a modular facility at the Defence Forces site. He urged all parties to move quickly so the fully funded ambulance service can begin operating as soon as possible.

Ask Anna!

Ask the KP therapy team

Anna answers your health and wellbeing questions. Why can't I sleep properly, and what can I do to improve my sleep naturally?

Maura, Ardfert

Sleep difficulties are a common health concern, affecting people of all ages. Some people find it difficult to fall asleep, others wake repeatedly during the night or in the early hours, while many never feel fully refreshed despite spending enough time in bed. Quality sleep is essential for overall health and wellbeing. During sleep, the body carries out important repair processes, the brain consolidates memories, and both physical and mental resilience are restored. When sleep is disrupted, it can affect energy levels, concentration, mood and long-term health. Improving sleep often begins with simple lifestyle changes. Establishing a regular bedtime routine, limiting screen time before bed, managing stress, avoiding stimulants late in the day, and creating a calm, comfortable sleep environment can all help promote more restful sleep. If sleep problems continue, it is important to look beyond the symptom and consider the underlying cause. Stress, anxiety, hormonal changes, digestive health, medication, and an overactive mind can all contribute to disturbed sleep. Because the reasons vary from person to person, an individualised approach is often the most effective. Herbal medicine, when prescribed appropriately by a qualified herbal practitioner, can provide tailored support by addressing the underlying factors contributing to poor sleep, rather than simply masking the symptoms.

“I’ve recently started trying to get healthier, but I feel completely overwhelmed. I’m not sure how much exercise I should be doing, what kind of workouts are best, or even how to balance it with proper nutrition. I also worry about picking up injuries, as I’ve had some minor aches already. Should I just keep going on my own, or is it worth getting help from a fitness professional? And when would I need something like therapy?” Stephen from Tralee Health and fitness professionals play a vital role in supporting the wellbeing of individuals and communities. At KP Therapy, we recognise Personal Trainers and group instructors as being on the front lines, interacting daily with people who are striving to meet recommended weekly exercise targets and improve their overall health. These professionals are often the first point of contact for individuals seeking guidance, motivation, and structure, helping translate broad health recommendations into achievable, personalised plans. Beyond exercise prescription, they also play an important role in promoting awareness of national food guidelines, encouraging balanced nutrition alongside physical activity. Their influence extends beyond the gym floor, shaping habits that contribute to long-term health outcomes. An essential component of health-related fitness is flexibility, which is often overlooked in pursuit of fitness goals without guidance. Regular, monthly assessments conducted by trained professionals can help individuals stay on track, identify limitations early, and significantly reduce the risk of overuse injuries—something we frequently address at KP Therapy. Whether you are returning to fitness, progressing to a higher level, or simply aiming to maintain your health, seeking advice from qualified instructors is key. And when additional support is needed—whether for pain, injury, or improving flexibility—KP Therapy is here to help you stay active, healthy, and moving well.

Understanding what may be affecting sleep is often the first step towards achieving more restful nights and improved overall wellbeing.

Minister Norma Foley Welcomes ‘Sailing into Wellness’ Programme to Fenit Children and young people with disabilities in Kerry will once again have the opportunity to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of sailing this summer as the ‘Sailing into Wellness’ programme returns to Fenit. Minister for Children, Disability and Equality Norma Foley TD has welcomed the initiative, which combines outdoor activity with therapeutic support to promote confidence, emotional wellbeing and social inclusion in a safe and supportive marine environment. Delivered in partnership with HSE South West, the programme complements the work of Children’s Disability Network Teams (CDNTs) by providing tailored sailing sessions where participants can develop new skills, enjoy sensory experiences on the water and build confidence at

their own pace with the support of trained instructors and caregivers. Welcoming the programme, Minister Foley said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for children with additional needs to take part in a summer sailing programme. They learn teamwork, sailing skills and experience the enjoyment of being on the water. I want to thank the HSE and everyone involved in Sailing into Wellness for delivering such an innovative initiative. We look forward to seeing these summer respite opportunities continue to grow across the country.” Carol Mannix, Integrated Service Lead for Disability Services with HSE South West, said the programme provides meaningful, person-centred experiences that help strengthen confidence, encourage social

Cahill Welcomes Further Additional Irish Rail Service for Kerry Supporters Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry, Michael Cahill, has welcomed further confirmation from Iarnród Éireann that additional special returns train from Killarney & Tralee to Dublin will operate for the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship semi-final between Kerry and Dublin. Deputy Cahill had been in contact with Iarnród Éireann in recent days to highlight the exceptional demand from Kerry supporters travelling to Croke Park. Welcoming the latest

announcement, Deputy Cahill said:

“I am delighted that Iarnród Éireann has again responded positively by providing extra trains for Kerry supporters travelling to the AllIreland semi-final.” “I had been in contact with Iarnród Éireann to stress the need for extra capacity and I am pleased they have continued to respond to the unprecedented demand. “I want to sincerely thank Iarnród Éireann for their continued

engagement and willingness to work with me on this issue.I would encourage supporters to secure their tickets as early as possible.”

Concluding, the Kerry TD said: “I also wish Jack O’Connor, the players and management team every success as they bid to reach another All-Ireland Final.”

Tralee Business Owner Kevin Ross Chosen as Kerry Rose Escort for 2026 Festival Tralee entrepreneur Kevin Ross, owner of Balloons le Grá in Manor West Shopping Centre, is preparing for one of the biggest honours of his life after being selected as a Rose Escort for the 2026 Rose of Tralee International Festival.

Street with his late mother, he told her he hoped one day to become a Rose Escort. Although she passed away in 2012, Kevin never forgot that promise and set himself the goal of achieving it before his 30th birthday.

The 29-year-old, originally from Ballyduff, was chosen following a nationwide selection process and will join 31 other escorts from across Ireland for this year’s internationally renowned festival.

“I’ll be taking part in the festival just a week before turning 30, which makes it even more special,” he said. Kevin admitted he initially believed he had been unsuccessful when he received the selection phone call, only for the excitement to turn to joy when he was told he had secured his place.

For Kevin, the achievement fulfils a lifelong dream. As a young boy watching the Rose Parade on Denny

Following interviews in Tullamore and a recent bootcamp, Kevin said one of the biggest highlights has been the friendships formed with the other escorts.

Away from festival preparations, Kevin and the Kerry Rose Escorts are organising the “Up & Down Challenge” in aid of Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland. The campaign includes climbing Carrauntoohil, completing a charity skydive and hosting a Coffee Morning at Kirby’s Brogue Inn in Tralee.

...Good News Only!!! TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER KERINS O’RAHILLYS GAA CLUB NOTES Senior Men’s County League Division 1: A disappointing final day defeat at home to Glenflesk, 1-25 to 1-15, on a beautiful sunny afternoon at Strand Road. The Blues levelled at half time on 1-09 apiece before Glenflesk took control in the second half and ran out comfortable winners. Relegation to Division 2 for next season is now confirmed, decided by a new head-to-head tie-breaking rule introduced this year rather than score difference. The lads fought hard all season and will refocus for the upcoming club championship. Senior Ladies: Defeated away to Beale, 2-14 to 1-10, in the final Division 3 league game but it matters little as the ladies have finished top of Division 3 and secured promotion to Division 2. The Donal Curtin Cup Final against Austin Stacks takes place on Monday July 6th at 7:30pm in Caherslee. A massive crowd is encouraged to come and support. Kerry Senior Football: Best of luck to Kerry and to club man Tomás Kennedy against Dublin in the AllIreland Senior Football Semi-Final on Sunday July 12th at 4pm in Croke Park. U12 Boys: A great Go Games trip to Kilcummin with top-class skills on display from both teams. U8 Girls: Welcomed St Pat’s to Ballyrickard for a wonderful morning of matches with great team spirit and progression on show. AUSTIN STACKS GAA CLUB NOTES Senior Men’s County League Division 1: A dominant 2-19 to 1-09 win over Killarney Legion in Connolly Park to round off the league campaign in style, leading 2-11 to 0-02 at half time. Congratulations to Sean Moynihan on his senior debut. Senior Men B - County League Division 6: Promotion secured after a storming second-half display saw the B team win away to Kilcummin, 1-22 to 0-12, finishing top of the division alongside Ballylongford. A brilliant achievement with 44 players togging out over the course of the season. U21 County Championship QuarterFinal: A disappointing defeat to Mid Kerry, 1-14 to 0-13, in Keel. Austin Stacks trailed at half time after conceding a goal just before the break but pushed hard in the closing stages despite playing into a strong wind. A spirited performance with many key players unavailable.

Friday 10th July 2026

U15 Boys - Féile Derry: A tremendous journey to the Féile Peile na nÓg in Derry. The squad won their opening game against Ballinascreen before drawing with Claregalway, only to be eliminated on a lowest scores conceded rule despite outscoring Claregalway overall. The boys went on to reach the Shield final before losing to Glanmire. A fantastic experience that created memories for life for players and their families. Minor Boys: The County League got underway with a defeat to Churchill in Round 1, having led by five at half time before Churchill took control in the second half. Home to Laune Rangers on Monday July 6th in Round 2. Kerry Representation: Great to see Dylan, Joe and Armin involved in Kerry’s win over Tyrone, with Armin’s goal sealing a famous victory. Best of luck to all Kerry players against Dublin in the All-Ireland Semi-Final on July 12th. Summer Camp: Takes place July 20th to 24th, 9:30am to 12:30pm daily. No need to prebook, just come along on the first morning with your boots. A social evening was held to bid farewell to Fr Pádraig Walsh after 17 years of dedicated service in St Brendan’s and his long-standing support of the club. He is greatly missed already. NA GAEIL GAA CLUB NOTES Kerry Senior Men: Best of luck to Kerry against Dublin in the All-Ireland Semi-Final on Sunday July 12th at 4pm in Croke Park. Kerry Senior Ladies: Well done to Kerry on their All-Ireland QuarterFinal win over Meath. They now face Dublin in the All-Ireland Final on Saturday July 18th. Kerry U18 Ladies: Best of luck to Avril Doyle and the Kerry minor ladies who face Laois in the Minor B Championship semi-final in Mallow on Thursday at 7:30pm. Senior Men’s County League Division 3: The final round saw Na Gaeil lose to Castlegregory, 6-18 to 1-19, though the result is academic as Na Gaeil had already secured promotion to Division 2 for next season. Several players made their senior debut on the day. Senior Ladies County League Division 1: Hard luck in defeat to MKL Gaels which ended their hopes of a league final place. The senior ladies are now at home to Castleisland Desmonds in the Shield

semi-final tonight at 7:30pm.

this week.

Men’s U21 County Championship: The St Brendan’s Board U21 team defeated West Kerry in Round 2 and now face Kenmare Shamrocks in Spa on Tuesday at 7pm in the county semi-final. U8 Boys: A great Sunday morning session in Killeen followed by Go Games away to Austin Stacks tonight. Minor Boys: Away to Kilcummin tonight at 7pm in the County League Division 2. Congratulations to senior player Jack Barry and Laura Daly on their wedding. Best wishes to Fr Pádraig Walsh as he moves to his new parish in Castleisland after many years of great support for the club.

U12 Girls: Next game away to Currow on Wednesday July 8th at 6:15pm.

BALLYMAC GAA CLUB NOTES U16 Boys - County League Division 3B: A comprehensive 5-14 to 3-04 win over Kilgarvan in ideal conditions. Ballymac were dominant throughout, leading by ten points at half time and pulling further clear in the second half. Outstanding performances from Gearóid Joy at wing back and Eric Quirke in midfield, with Patrick Leen again one of the most influential players on the pitch. Next up: away to Dr Crokes on Thursday July 9th. U12 Girls: A brilliant end to their Lee Strand Go Games campaign with two entertaining games away to Ballyduff, with great individual and combined play on show throughout. U10 Boys: Travelled to Rathmore to kick off Phase 2 of their Go Games fixtures, bringing 20 players including some U8s. Great work rate and team spirit on show. Next up: home to Fossa on July 15th. ST PATS GAA NOTES Seniors: A hard-fought 3-16 to 4-13 draw against Fossa B, with Fergal O’Brien outstanding throughout. Next up: Juniors play Churchill B in the Tralee/St Brendan’s Junior League this week.

U10 Girls: Great performances against Spa Killarney before hosting their own blitz in Blennerville against Cordal, Milltown-Castlemaine and Kenmare. U8 Girls: Had a fantastic morning hosted by Kerins O’Rahillys, with two teams showing all their training is paying off. Best of luck to Kerry against Dublin in the All-Ireland Semi-Final on Sunday July 12th. Best of luck to the St Brendan’s Board U21 team against Kenmare Shamrocks in the county semi-final on Tuesday, including club players Liam O’Sullivan, Ben Sharp, Thomas Sheehy, Michael Enright and Darragh Murphy. KERRY FC - SSE AIRTRICITY MEN’S FIRST DIVISION Kerry FC suffered a dramatic 2-1 defeat away to Treaty United at the Markets Field on Friday, their winning run ended in the cruellest of circumstances. Cian Murphy converted a penalty in the 38th minute to put Kerry ahead, but goalkeeper Matthew Connor was shown a red card two minutes into the second half, leaving Kerry to defend with ten men. Despite a heroic effort, with Jack Brady producing a magnificent save to deny Murphy a second goal, Treaty equalised through Jason Oyenuga before Robbie Lynch headed the winner in the 85th minute. A gutwrenching result but Kerry showed tremendous character throughout. Next up: away to Wexford FC in Ferrycarrig Park on Friday.

U17 Boys: A 7-14 to 2-14 defeat away to Knocknagoshel/Brosna in Round 2 of the County League, with notable performances from Charlie Sharp, Jake Kelly, Conor Galvin and Padraig O’Connor. A bye in Round 4
