Ask the KP therapy team
QUESTION:
“Why do I still have pain and movement restrictions even though my scans and strength tests are normal?” John, Tralee
Answer:

In recent years, strength and conditioning (S&C), rehabilitation, and manual therapy have experienced a rapid shift toward quantitative assessment. Technologies that measure jump height, force production, rate of force development, asymmetry, reactive strength, and hundreds of other metrics are becoming increasingly accessible and are quickly establishing themselves as the new standard for performance and clinical decision-making.
These objective measures provide valuable insights into an individual’s capacity, readiness, and progress. However, not every important aspect of human movement can yet be captured by technology alone. One metric that remains largely dependent on skilled clinical assessment is the “first area of bind” – a key concept within KP Therapy.
Muscle binding can be thought of as a protective stretch reflex or resistance encountered during movement. The point at which this binding occurs varies significantly between individuals and is often different between the left and right sides of the same person. Changes in the first area of bind can reflect altered neuromuscular control, tissue sensitivity, or protective responses within the body.
Identifying these restrictions can help explain why movement is limited, why muscles become painful, and why strength around a joint may be inhibited. While quantitative testing continues to advance, combining objective data with skilled assessment of the first area of bind offers a more complete understanding of human movement and performance.

The Tankard Celebrates 50 Years of Family, Food and Community in Fenit
A landmark celebration took place on the Fenit seafront recently as The Tankard in Kilfenora marked an incredible 50 years in business, bringing together generations of customers, staff, family and friends to honour a remarkable local success story.
More than 400 guests gathered at the iconic venue on June 19th for a complimentary BBQ, live music from Super Céilí and a night of celebration that reflected five decades at the heart of the community.
The story began in 1976 when Jerry and Mary O’Sullivan, together with Jerry’s brother Eugie and his wife Margaret, took over a small bar and dancehall overlooking Tralee Bay. The family moved into the staff quarters behind the premises, while a petrol station operated in the

middle of the car park. Their four sons grew up around the business, helping wherever they could. From filling petrol tanks and pulling pints to peeling vegetables in the kitchen, the venue became both a family home and a way of life. Today, three of those sons continue the family tradition. Enda and Adrian O’Sullivan are co-owners, while their brother Ian serves as Head Chef.
Over the years, The Tankard has evolved from a dancehall and bar into one of Kerry’s best-known dining and events destinations. The venue now offers casual and fine dining, outdoor pergola dining, summer BBQs, weddings, Day Two celebrations, family occasions and private events, all set against the spectacular backdrop of Tralee Bay.

Speaking at the anniversary celebrations, co-owner Enda O’Sullivan said the family were proud that The Tankard continues to thrive after half a century.
“We’ve come through recessions, changing times and the challenges of COVID, but we’re still here and looking forward to the future,” he said.
The Tankard’s unique location directly on the Fenit Greenway has also helped attract new visitors, with growing numbers of walkers and cyclists discovering the venue each year. A regular Local Link bus service now makes it even easier for people to enjoy a meal or drinks before returning to Tralee.
The anniversary also marked the launch of a refreshed brand identity for the business, signalling an exciting new chapter while remaining true to the values established by Jerry and Mary five decades ago.

Public Consultation On Reduced Speed Limits In Urban Areas
Proposals to reduce 50km/h speed limit in urban and built-up areas
Kerry County Council is inviting the public to share their views on proposed new reduced speed limits in urban areas in the county. The council has today commenced public consultation on new draft speed limit bye-laws which would see the speed limit reduced from 50km/h to 30km/h in many urban or built-up locations. This is the second phase of a nationwide review of speed limits under the government’s Road Safety Strategy, 2021-2030, with a focus in this phase on speed limits in urban and busy or built-up areas. The review involves recommendations for a new 30km/h speed limit in these locations which would replace the existing 50km/h provision.
Proposals for the reduction in the speed limit applies to towns and urban areas including Tralee,
Maps which provide information about the proposed new speed limits have now gone on public display and are available on the Council website. Submissions can be made until 7 August, following which a report on the submissions will be presented to the council’s elected members.
Guidelines for the review were issued by the Department of Transport with recommendations for introducing a 30 km/h speed limit in locations where it is considered to be ‘appropriate’ and ‘credible’. In locations where a permanent 30 km/h speed limit was not considered appropriate, a periodic 30 km/h speed limit outside schools in urban

Kerry County Council Urges Water Safety During Warm Weather
With temperatures rising and more people heading outdoors, Kerry County Council is reminding everyone to take extra care around water this summer.
The appeal supports a nationwide water safety campaign by the Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland, Waterways Ireland and the RNLI, highlighting that many accidents occur during everyday activities near water rather than while swimming. Lifeguards are now on duty at Kerry’s Blue Flag beaches, and swimmers are encouraged to use only designated bathing areas when lifeguards are present. However, the safety message also applies
to people enjoying coastal walks, fishing, cycling near waterways or simply spending time beside rivers, lakes and the sea.
Parents are urged to supervise children at all times near water, while anyone taking part in boating or water sports should wear a properly fitted lifejacket. The public is also advised to avoid alcohol, check weather and tide conditions, carry a means of calling for help and let someone know their plans before setting out.
More water safety advice is available at www.watersafety.ie.

Following an extensive restoration the instrument made its debut at a concert by internationally acclaimed pianist and composer Shuteen Erdenebaatar, presented by Music Network.

Funding Boost for New Domestic Violence Refuge in Tralee
Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley, has welcomed the latest funding approval for the development of a new and expanded domestic violence refuge in Tralee. The project, which is being delivered by ADAPT Kerry Women’s Refuge and Support Services in partnership with Kerry County Council, has now received Stage 2 approval under the Department of Housing’s Capital Assistance Scheme. The approval allows the project to move forward to the planning stage, with construction expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2029. Once completed, the new facility will provide 13 family residential units, significantly increasing capacity from the current six-unit refuge. The development
will also include a range of support and therapeutic services, including communal kitchen and living areas, an emergency response room, dedicated therapeutic spaces for adults, teenagers and children, study facilities, and administrative offices. Kerry County Council has also provided an adjoining site which will be developed as additional parking for the refuge. Welcoming the announcement, Minister Foley said the project will provide vital support for women and families affected by domestic violence, offering a safe place for those who need to leave their homes in crisis situations. She also acknowledged the support of her Government colleagues, including James Browne and Jim O’Callaghan, for helping to advance the project. The Minister paid tribute

to the management, staff and board of ADAPT Kerry for their dedication and commitment to supporting vulnerable women and families across the county. She also thanked Kerry County
Council for its ongoing cooperation and support in helping bring the important project to the next stage of development.

KERRY FC - SSE AIRTRICITY MEN’S FIRST DIVISION
Kerry FC made it back-to-back wins with a hard-fought 1-0 victory away to UCD AFC in Belfield on Friday night. Cian Brosnan scored the only goal of the game in the 34th minute, finishing well after a fine move involving Daniel Okwute down the left flank.
Matthew Connor was the standout performer, producing a string of excellent saves throughout the second half to preserve the lead, including a stunning stop to deny Charles Akimrintoyo with the goal at his mercy. Kerry held on through a tense finish to secure a deserved win in the capital and now look to make it three wins in a row as they host Longford Town next week at Mounthawk Park.
