Munster Technological University (MTU) has welcomed new signage installed by Kerry County Council designating Tralee as a “University Town.” The signs, placed at key entry points to the town, celebrate Tralee’s status as a centre for education, innovation, and community. MTU, established in 2021 following the merger of IT Tralee and Cork Institute of Technology, now spans six campuses. The new signs reflect the growing influence MTU has on Tralee’s educational, economic, and cultural life.
MTU President Professor Maggie Cusack said the signage represents the university’s proud place in the town and its continued contribution
to regional growth. Chair of MTU’s Governing Body, Jimmy Deenihan, called the designation “a landmark moment” for Tralee.
The signage launch was marked by a photo shoot attended by MTU representatives, Kerry County Council, and Tralee Chamber Alliance. Frank Hartnett, Director of Roads at Kerry County Council, expressed pride in supporting MTU’s recognition.Visible to thousands daily, the signs align Tralee with other university towns like Maynooth and Sligo and highlight its growing role in Ireland’s higher education landscape alongside cities like Cork, Limerick, and Galway.

• 150g dried long-grain rice
• 350ml boiling vegetable stock, suitable for vegans
• 1 tsp cumin seeds, lightly crushed
• ½-1 tsp mild chilli powder
• 400g can black beans, drained and rinsed
• 4 tbsp plain unsweetened soya yogurt with added calcium
• 1 level tsp chipotle chilli paste*
• 1 little gem lettuce, finely shredded
• 150g cherry tomatoes, halved
• 4 spring onions, thinly sliced
• 6 radishes, halved and thinly sliced
• 120g canned sweetcorn, drained
• 2 cooked beetroots from a jar or vacuum pack, roughly chopped
• Lime wedges, to serve
• *Although this ingredient has a small Syn value, the amount per serving is so low we treat it as Free.
Method
1. Heat your oven to 220°C/fan 200°C/gas 7.
2. Cut a piece of foil into a square slightly bigger than one of the wraps. Microwave the first wrap for 8 seconds at 800W, then put it in the centre of the foil square. Scrunch up the sides of the foil, pleating the wrap slightly to make a bowl shape – the foil will hold the wrap in place. Repeat with the remaining wraps. Put the tortilla bowls on a baking tray and bake for 8-10 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and leave to cool completely.
3. At the same time, put the rice and stock in a saucepan over a high heat and bring to the boil. Cover, reduce the heat to low and simmer gently for 10-12 minutes or until the rice is tender and the stock is absorbed. Stir in the cumin seeds, chilli powder and beans, and cover. Set aside for 5 minutes.
4. In a separate bowl, mix the soya yogurt with the chipotle paste and season to taste.
5. Divide the tortilla bowls between plates (discarding the foil) and fill with the lettuce and rice. Top with the tomatoes, spring onions, radishes, sweetcorn and beetroot. Serve with the chipotle yogurt and lime wedges.

Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly has strongly criticised the government over the prolonged vacancy of council homes in Kerry, claiming the county has the worst turnaround time in the country for bringing empty public houses back into use. FOI data revealed that some homes in Kerry have been boarded up for nearly a decade—far surpassing vacancy periods in other counties.
Deputy Daly described the situation as “scandalous,” particularly during a national housing emergency.
“Families are crying out for homes while decent houses are left to rot.
Children are growing up in hotel rooms while homes lie empty next door,” he said.
According to the data, 18 houses in Kerry have been vacant longer than any in the country, with an average
turnaround time of 65 weeks. Over 30% of Ireland’s council homes left vacant for more than three years are in Kerry.
Despite this crisis, Kerry County Council’s maintenance budget is just over €2.1 million—significantly less than other counties also struggling to manage housing stock.
Daly condemned the government for chronic underfunding and red tape that prevent local authorities from returning homes to use. He called on the public to support Sinn Féin’s demand for urgent housing reform, inviting people to join a demonstration in Cork on June 21st.
“Sinn Féin would cut the red tape and end the bureaucracy. We will not stand by while families suffer beside boarded-up homes,” he vowed.
A touching community project, “Square to Share,” will come to life this Sunday at Féile na mBláth in Tralee as a colourful display of handcrafted blankets adorns the Kerry Cancer Support Group’s Cork Bus. For the past six months, people of all ages from across Ireland—and even abroad—have knitted and crocheted squares for this heartfelt initiative. Spearheaded by Kaya and the Milltown Knit and Natter Group, the project united contributors through creativity, compassion, and personal stories.
Breda from Kerry Cancer Support Group praised the outpouring of support: “This project has been incredibly inspiring. Each square has a story, and seeing them come together has been deeply moving.”
She thanked everyone who contributed squares and donations, highlighting the tireless work of Kaya and the Knit and Natter Group in assembling the blankets.
The vibrant blankets will be displayed on the Cork Bus, which will be parked just outside the Park from early Sunday morning. All contributors and visitors are encouraged to stop by and view this powerful symbol of community spirit and care.
Following the event, the blankets will be gifted to service users of Healthlink, the transport service run by Kerry Cancer Support Group, ensuring the warmth of this project continues beyond the festival. This heartwarming display promises to be a highlight of Féile na mBláth, adding a burst of colour and a message of solidarity.

“To make
the Intercounty Intermediate camogie championship final & to win division 2A National League.”
I always had an interest in GAA. We are a big hurling household so I was always going to end up trying my hand at it. I played both football and camogie underage but camogie was my pick.
To date, what is your greatest achievement in sport?
Winning both the county and club All Ireland Championships in the same year in 2019.
It was our first major achievement as a group and has set the tone for the years that have followed.
What is your goal that you have set for yourself?
To win an Intermediate All Ireland camogie medal with Kerry. We were narrowly defeated by Kilkenny in the semi-final last year.
Who has been your biggest influence/mentor in sport?
My biggest influence/mentor in sport has been my dad. He first introduced me to the sport and has coached me underage. He is always there to offer his advice post-match.
What is your earliest memory of sport?
Playing U8s hurling with St. Brendan’s Ardfert. We played with the boy’s team as there was no camogie set up in Kerry at the time. Camogie in Kerry has come a long way since then.
If you were to play another sport, what would it be?
If I was to play another sport, I would probably pick athletics. When I am not training for camogie, I enjoy going for a run and an occasional race. Before I committed to camogie I used to compete in athletics and judo.
Within the next year, what will be your main use of our facility?
(recovery, training, rehab etc.)
My main use of the facility during the camogie season will be for recovery. Having access to the pool is great to have after a hard pitch session or gym workout. I find the gym great to use both for strength training and injury prevention.
ATHLETICS, LONG JUMP & 200M FARRENFORE MAINE VALLEY ATHLETIC CLUB
“Improve both 200m & long Jump PB’s and establish myself as a competitive athlete“
Why did you choose the sport you compete in?
Once I went to my first athletics training I instantly fell in love and never looked back. I actually started off competing in cross-country and have only transitioned to sprints and long jump in the past few years. There's something about defying gravity or pushing your body to its maximum speed that brings out the competiveness.
To date, what is your greatest achievement in sport?
I was a part of a Kerry Cross country relay team that won the bronze Community Games medal.
What is your ultimate goal that you have set for yourself?
To reach 5m in the long jump and to get a new PB in the 200m.
Who has been your biggest influence/mentor in sport?
I always loved watching Usain Bolt compete down through the years. I was in awe of not only his talent but his discipline and competitiveness to be the best. As far as mentors go, I would have to say that my club (Farranfore Maine Valley) influenced my love for the sport from an early stage and has continued to support me down through the years.
What is your earliest memory of sport?
I was always an active child, always outside playing any type of sport I could. As far as my first memory of athletics, I was in love from my first training. I competed in my first cross country competition only 2 weeks after joining the club, winning a Munster medal and ranking as the first Kerry athlete in. After that I was hooked.
If you were to play another sport, what would it be?
I played football all the way up to U16's until I eventually couldn't dedicate enough time to both sports, so I'll always have a love for it. But I'd love to try other sports that mightn't have been as common when I was growing up.
Within the next year, what will be your main use of our facility? (recovery, training, rehab etc.)
Mainly I aim to use the facilities to train and strengthen myself for competitions. I've also found that the facilities are great for recovering after hard training sessions or a tough competition which is extremely important for competing.
