Minister Foley confirms €2.1 million in local community recognition grants

Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry TD Norma Foley has welcomed confirmation of over €2.1 million in community recognition grants for groups in Kerry.

The Community Recognition Fund was first introduced in 2023 to recognise the huge efforts made by communities in welcoming and supporting people coming to Ireland. There are 23 projects in Kerry that will receive funding worth over €2.1 million. This includes €500,000 for internal finishes in the Dereen Sports Complex in Killarney, €95,000 for upgrades to equipment in Tralee Harriers Athletic Club, €150,000 for Kerry Mountain Rescue, over €62,000 for Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne, €59,000 for a community playground at Caherleaheen national school and €50,000 for the renovation of a café at Blennerville Windmill.

Minister Foley said: “These grants are

an official acknowledgment of the warm welcome that communities across Kerry have provided to people coming to Ireland from Ukraine and other countries. I am pleased to see that the latest tranche of Community Recognition grants will fund equipment, sports and community facilities throughout Kerry.

This is a very significant funding announcement by Government for Kerry. By investing in facilities and organisations that facilitate integration and community participation, we are building stronger communities.”

Kerry groups and organisations previously received over €1.7 million in funding in the last round of the community recognition grants earlier this year.

Gleneagle Arena Marks 25-Year Milestone

This week marks the 25th anniversary of the official opening of the Gleneagle Arena, formerly known as Ireland’s National Events Centre (INEC). Opened on Sunday, June 4, 2000, by then Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, the venue has become one of Ireland’s most iconic and versatile event spaces. Over the past 25 years, Gleneagle

Arena has hosted countless unforgettable moments—from sold-out concerts by global artists to major conferences, festivals, and sporting events. Its success has positioned Killarney as a premier year-round destination for entertainment and tourism. The venue was the brainchild of the late Maurice O’Donoghue, whose

vision and commitment shaped its legacy. “This was our father’s most ambitious project,” said Patrick O’Donoghue, CEO of Gleneagle. “He believed in its potential to benefit Killarney and the region. He’d be proud of what it has become.”

Earlier this year, the venue was renamed Gleneagle Arena as part of a strategic rebranding to align more closely with the Gleneagle brand, under which it has always operated. The new name reflects

St. Pats GAA’s Dingle Way Challenge a Huge Success with 250 Participants

St. Pats GAA hosted its annual Dingle Way Challenge last Sunday, drawing 250 participants in support of the club’s ongoing facility development projects. The event was hailed as a major success, thanks to strong community involvement and detailed planning by the organising committee.

The day began early, with Ultra Route walkers registering at the clubhouse from 4:00am. Their 45km journey started at Halla le Chéile and

included scenic highlights such as Más an Tiompáin, Brandon Creek, Feohanagh Bay, and TP’s Bar in Ballydavid.

Meanwhile, Standard Route participants embarked on a 20km trek beginning at Séipéal

Na Carraige. They stopped at An Ghaeltacht GAA for refreshments before joining the Ultra walkers at the finish line in O’Connor’s Bar, Cloghane.

Walkers were treated to breakfast

at An Ghaeltacht GAA, scenic West Kerry views, and support stations throughout the course. Upon finishing, each participant received a Dingle Way Challenge medal, refreshments, and a warm welcome from organisers.

Top honours went to Gary Scollard as the first male Ultra finisher and Olha Ivashyna as the first female.

The day concluded under a marquee with a BBQ, drinks, and community celebration. The club extended

heartfelt thanks to main sponsors Poff Motors, 3D Personnel, Divane’s Volkswagen Kerry, local businesses, Derryquay ICA, medical personnel, and all volunteers.

St. Pats GAA expressed gratitude to all walkers and supporters, whose involvement ensured the challenge’s success and contributed to the club’s community development goals.

Kerry Airport Reports €1.37M Profit in Record-Breaking 2024

Kerry Airport has announced a strong financial performance for 2024, recording an operating profit after tax of €1,373,300, up 14% from €1,198,347 in 2023. The airport also welcomed 417,409 passengers during the year—its thirdhighest annual total on record. Chief Financial Officer Basil Sheerin highlighted that the financial success was supported by government grants and will help fund planned capital expenditure of over €4.4

million in 2025. He noted that the new Arrivals Hall, opened in March 2025, has received highly positive feedback, and the Departures Hall expansion is on track for completion by July.

The airport’s growth was driven by strong performances in its fuel services, gift shop/duty-free sales, and car park operations. However, Sheerin acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly rising administrative costs in areas such as wages, local authority rates, energy, and maintenance, which have put pressure on profit margins. These cost areas are being closely monitored to ensure value for money.

Kerry Airport also reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability through the Science Based Targets Initiative, nearing full conversion of its vehicle fleet to electric and beginning a feasibility study on oncampus energy generation.

Dingle Way Challenge 2025

St Pats hosted a hugely successful Dingle Way Challenge on Sunday to raise funds for club development. Over 250 walkers completed either the 45km Ultra or 20km Standard route through scenic West Kerry. The Ultra began at 4am and ended in Cloghane, with stunning views and great community spirit. Congratulations to Gary Scollard and Olha Ivashyna, first male and female finishers. Thanks to our sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who contributed.
