Marie has started to use AI for work and now at home. If there is any problem she has in the house, she is able to sort it out with an AI app. While it has made a life a bit easier she is worried about the long term impacts and is wondering what is the legal position of AI or an AI person.

AI throw up a number of legal issues. It can be used by law firms for research but must always be supervised to check factual truth of material.

1. Automated decision making can throw up human rights issues expecially where the tool operates incorrectly impacting people’s lives e.gt. in getting jobs, accessing life insurance and/or healthcare.

2. Does an AI generated robot have rights? This is something the law will have to grapple with in the future,

3. AI tools relay on scanned data. An issue arises whether that data has been lawfully accessed or whether it is suitable for its intended use. E.g. is the data free from discriminatory bias.

4. AI tools rely on other peoples material often protected by intellectual property. It makes it difficult for intellectual property law to grapple with and for artists and creators to be fairly compensated.

5. The likes of face recognition can result in the recipient being unfairly picked out and it may result in legal and ethical issues.

The EU has brought in an EU wide regulation EU Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act which was passed in 2024 and is being brought in on a phased basis throughout the EU by 2027. We are presently passing legislation to give effect to the regulation in practice e.g. setting up an AI Central office and managing risks of AI by dividing it into unacceptable risk, high risk, Specific transparency risk and minimal risk. There are rules in the regulation for AI systems placed on the market to reduce the risks to people’s health safety and fundamental rights.

On a personal level to preserve our privacy and confidentiality be careful to limit and curtail any personal information going into an AI instrument. Many of us will be familiar with this already from social media the ability of the algorithm to detect life changes and circumstances and push appropriate marketing material. i.e. discussing mowing the lawn and you get ads for lawnmowers.!

Féile Na Mbláth-Tralee Park Festival next Weekend!

Féile na mBláth – Tralee Park Festival returns to Tralee Town Park this summer for its 21st anniversary, promising an even bigger and better celebration for 2026.

The festival will take place from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th June 2026 and, thanks to the continued support of Kerry County Council and Tralee Municipal District, all festival events will once again be completely FREE to attend.

The official Festival opening will take place on Friday 12th June at 1pm by Mayor of Tralee & Tralee Flower & Garden Club - , followed by an afternoon filled with live music and delicious food offerings. The centrepiece of Féile na mBláth remains the Tralee Flower & Garden Club arrangement and display competitions in the Flower Marquee, which culminate with the prize-giving ceremony on Sunday evening. Friday evening will conclude with a special outdoor family summer movie night in the Town Park, with some familiar children’s characters making appearances

to welcome audiences before the screening begins at 6 pm. This year, the festival is delighted to introduce a brand-new Sensory Zone Workshop for the very first time. Taking place in the Kerry Group Entertainment Marquee in the Town Park on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th June, the sensory zone will provide a designated interactive space filled with games, activities and fun experiences for everyone to enjoy. Saturday’s programme is packed with entertainment and activities for all ages, including the weekly Park Run, flower demonstrations by Tralee Flower & Garden Club, and workshops in the Community Gardens. Families can enjoy performances from the Fanzini Brothers, interactive drum circles, Munster Pipe Band performances, and the colourful ‘Creatable Inflatable Parade’. The evening celebrations will continue in the sponsored Kerry Group Marquee with Set Dancing and Céilí dancing late into the night. Sunday morning will begin with the traditional outdoor Mass at 10:30am. followed

by the ever- popular Emergency Services Display featuring Kerry Fire & Rescue, Kerry Civil Defence and the Irish Coast Guard. Trad Central will take over the park on Sunday afternoon with live traditional music, Irish dancing and cultural performances along with the much-loved annual Dog Show. Throughout the weekend, visitors can also enjoy traditional food and craft stalls, Art in the Park, Tralee Community Garden workshops and Meitheal activities, along with free admission to Kerry County Museum. Down Syndrome Kerry Calls on Cyclists to “Pedal with a Purpose – Cycle for Our Future” at Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle

As one of the proud beneficiaries of this year’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, Down Syndrome Kerry is appealing to participants to choose the organisation as their charity partner and help make a lasting difference in the lives of children, teenagers, and adults with Down syndrome across the county.

With the rallying call “Pedal with a Purpose – Cycle for Our Future,” Down Syndrome Kerry is encouraging cyclists taking part in the iconic event to turn every kilometre into meaningful support for local families. Funds raised through the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle play a vital role in enabling Down Syndrome Kerry to provide essential services, programmes, and supports that empower members to reach their full potential and lead fulfilling lives. The organisation supports individuals and families from early childhood through adulthood, offering educational supports, speech and language therapy initiatives, social and recreational programmes, life skills development, advocacy, and family support services.

There were double celebrations this week as Tralee Hair Studio marked owner John Murphy’s 66th birthday alongside the salon’s 44th year in business. A small gathering was held in The Brogue, Tralee, where staff, friends and up to 60 loyal customers came together to celebrate both special occasions and recognise the long-standing success of one of Tralee’s best-known hair studios.

Kerry School Crowned Marine Institute’s 2026 National Explorers Ocean Champions

The students of Aughacasla National School in County Kerry have been named the Marine Institute’s 2026 National Explorers Ocean Champions following their outstanding marine science project and documentary, A Nursery Beneath the Waves.

Selected from 22 schools participating in the Explorers Education Programme nationwide, the students impressed judges with their hands-on exploration of Tralee Bay. Acting as marine scientists and filmmakers, they investigated local shorelines and identified “mermaids’ purses” – the egg cases of sharks and skates. Their discoveries included egg cases from the rare White Skate, highlighting the ecological importance of Tralee Bay as a vital marine nursery.

The award was presented during a special school event attended by Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley, and Marine Institute CEO Dr Rick Officer.

Minister Foley praised the students’ enthusiasm, scientific curiosity and commitment to learning about their local marine environment.

The project combined science, research, creativity and digital storytelling, helping students develop valuable skills while increasing awareness of marine conservation. Principal David Doyle described it as one of the most impactful projects undertaken by the school, benefiting both students and the wider community.

The Explorers Education Programme, funded by the Marine Institute, has been promoting ocean

literacy in Irish schools for 20 years. The programme encourages children to understand, appreciate and protect Ireland’s marine environment through engaging, hands-on learning experiences.

The Marine Institute also announced category award winners from schools in Dublin, Waterford, Sligo and Mayo, recognising excellence in ocean literacy, sustainability and outdoor education.

Community-based recovery programme delivers strong outcomes for people experiencing addiction

A new evaluation by HSE South West Addiction Services has found that a community-based addiction recovery programme in Tralee is delivering strong outcomes for people experiencing addiction.

The report, Recovery without Walls, evaluates the Adult Recovery Group (ARG) at Brandon House Treatment Centre, a structured programme that supports people in overcoming drug and alcohol addiction while remaining connected to their families and communities.

The evaluation found that 79% of participants were abstinent from both alcohol and drugs after 12 months, while 97% were abstinent from drugs at follow-up. Participants also reported significant improvements in their mental and physical health, family relationships, employment and education opportunities, social connections and overall wellbeing.

Speaking at the launch of the report in Tralee, Barry Corkery, Senior Counsellor with HSE South West Addiction Services, said the

findings demonstrate the value of community-based, recovery-focused care and provide important insights for future service development.

The evaluation highlighted that recovery extends beyond substance use, with participants rebuilding family relationships, returning to work or education, developing

healthier lifestyles and forming new alcohol-free and drug-free friendships.

David Lane, General Manager of HSE South West Social Inclusion, said the programme shows how high-quality treatment can be delivered close to home while helping people remain connected

to their families, workplaces and communities.

The report concludes that the Adult Recovery Group at Brandon House is an effective pathway to recovery with strong potential for expansion in other communities.

Portrait Presentation Honours Donogh O’Malley Reform that Changed Ireland

A special portrait presentation at Kerry ETB honoured former Minister for Education Donogh O’Malley, whose introduction of free post-primary education transformed Ireland and created new opportunities for generations of students.

The portrait, created by Limerick artist Declan Chambers, was formally presented by Michael O’Dwyer, who helped organise the event in recognition of O’Malley’s lasting contribution to Irish education.

Before the introduction of free postprimary education and expanded school transport in 1967, many young people in Kerry were unable to continue their education due to financial barriers. O’Malley’s

reforms dramatically changed access to learning, particularly in rural areas, opening pathways to further education and employment.

Chairperson of Kerry ETB, Cllr Norma Moriarty, said the reforms remain one of the most significant developments in Irish social history, with their impact still visible across Kerry today. Chief Executive Ann O’Dwyer added that the values of access, inclusion and opportunity introduced by O’Malley continue to underpin education through schools, apprenticeships, further education and community learning programmes.

Speaking at the event, Michael O’Dwyer revealed that discussions are underway regarding a possible publication to mark the 60th

anniversary of Donogh O’Malley’s death in 2028, featuring memories and reflections from those influenced by his work.

Although his time as Minister for Education lasted less than two years

before his death in 1968,

O’Malley’s vision continues to shape Irish society and educational opportunity almost six decades later.

Families Invited to Enjoy Free Cruinniú na nÓg Events Across Kerry

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Michael Foley, is encouraging families across the county to take part in the wide range of free activities on offer during Cruinniú na nÓg on Saturday, June 6.

More than 30 events will take place throughout Kerry, including in Tralee, Killarney, Listowel, Dingle, Kenmare, Killorglin, Caherciveen and Caherdaniel.

Coordinated by Kerry County Council Arts Service and funded through Creative Ireland, the programme celebrates creativity and

youth participation.

According to Arts Officer Kate Kennelly, activities will include drumming, creative writing, origami, dance, painting and film workshops, giving young people an opportunity to explore their creativity in a fun and welcoming environment.

All events are free of charge, but advance booking is required.

Join the Summer Stars Reading Challenge at Your Local Kerry Library!

Kerry Library is delighted to invite children across the county to take part in the Summer Stars Reading Challenge, the national public library summer reading programme designed to encourage a love of reading while having fun throughout the summer holidays.

Summer Stars is completely free, non-competitive, and open to children of all ages. Every child who reads even one book or eBook is considered to have successfully completed the challenge.

From 13 June, children can visit any Kerry library to collect a Summer Stars Reading Challenge card and start tracking their reading. Participants can join at any stage during the summer and, upon completion, will receive a certificate and medal to celebrate their achievement.

Kerry Library offers an extensive collection of children’s books covering a wide range of ages,

interests, and reading levels. Young readers can also access eBooks and audiobooks through the BorrowBox service, which features a dedicated Summer Stars collection. Library staff are always available to recommend exciting books and authors to help children discover new favourites.

Throughout July and August, libraries across Kerry will host a variety of family-friendly events and workshops, including nature and biodiversity activities, music workshops, storytimes, sensory sessions, and educational programmes delivered in partnership with local organisations.

Children visiting their local library during the summer will also have opportunities to enter prize draws and take part in special activities.

Tralee’s Rosie Falvey Crowned 2026 Blue Jean Country Queen

Tralee woman Rosie Falvey has been crowned the 2026 Blue Jean Country Queen following a successful weekend at the renowned Blue Jean Country Queen Festival in Athboy, Co. Meath.

The 21-year-old, who is currently studying to become an English and Drama teacher at Mary Immaculate College, represented Churchill Macra na Feirme and became only the second Kerry contestant ever to win the prestigious title.

Rosie impressed judges throughout the June Bank Holiday festival, which brought together 22 contestants from across

Ireland. Participants took part in interviews, community events, entertainment activities and festival celebrations before the winner was announced at the gala banquet.

Speaking after her victory, Rosie said she was “absolutely blown away” by the result and praised the warm welcome she received in Athboy. She now hopes to use her role to promote Macra na Feirme, encourage more young people in Kerry to get involved, and represent her county at events nationwide.

Craobh Thr á Lí Marks 65 Years of Preserving Traditional Irish Culture

Craobh Thrá Lí of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year and is inviting former members, friends and supporters to help commemorate the branch’s rich history.

The Tralee branch has played a major role in promoting traditional Irish music, song, dance and storytelling since its foundation. Special tribute is being paid to one of its founding members, Máire Bean Uí Ghríofa, who devoted countless hours to teaching music, singing and dancing to generations of young people.

Many of her students went on to achieve success at Fleadhanna Ceoil, while Máire herself was an accomplished fiddle player and Fleadh winner.

Today, Craobh Thrá Lí has almost 140 members, including 74 young learners and 27 adult learners. Eight teachers provide tuition in a wide range of traditional instruments, as well as singing and storytelling. To mark the milestone, the branch is appealing for former members to share memories, stories and photographs from the past.

These contributions will help celebrate the people, friendships and achievements that have shaped the branch over the past 65 years. Major €11.2 Million Funding Boost for Kerry FC and Valentia Project

Two significant Kerry projects are set to benefit from a combined €11.2 million funding allocation under the Government’s Immigrant Investor Programme (IIP).

The biggest allocation will see Kerry FC receive €5.2 million to support major facility developments and upgrades at the club’s grounds, helping to strengthen the infrastructure of the county’s League of Ireland side and support its future growth.

Meanwhile, the Valentia Transatlantic Cable Station project has been awarded €6 million to further develop and preserve the scientific and historical legacy of the world’s first transatlantic communications cable. The investment is expected to enhance the site’s heritage, educational and tourism offering.

The funding announcement has been warmly welcomed by Norma Foley, along with Kerry Deputies Michael Cahill and Danny HealyRae, who described the investment as a major boost for sport, tourism and heritage projects across the county.

The combined allocation represents one of the largest recent funding announcements for Kerry-based projects.

The live music venue is getting the funding under the 2026 Grassroots Venues Support Scheme.

Minister Foley said: “I welcome this support for live performances in Mike the Pies, Listowel and the Green Room Dingle. The Grassroots Venues Support Scheme provides funding for live events showcasing grassroots artists performing material they have created themselves.”

All-Ireland U20 Champions: Immense pride at Strand Road as the Kerry U20s were crowned All-Ireland Champions with a clinical 0-21 to 1-10 victory over Tyrone at Croke Park. Gael Linn Success: Congratulations to Ella and Lilly who were part of the Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn team who won the Gael Linn competition in Lispole. A special mention to Lilly who captained the winning side.

AUSTIN STACKS GAA CLUB NOTES

Kerry U20 All-Ireland Champions: A hugely proud day for Austin Stacks as Paddy Lane climbed the steps of the Hogan Stand to lift the Clark Cup as captain. Paddy, Daniel Kirby and Ronan Carroll all started and made huge contributions to Kerry’s first All-Ireland at the grade in 20 years, with Alex Touhy also on the extended panel. The club had the honour of hosting the homecoming on Sunday in a wonderful occasion for all involved.

Upcoming Fixtures: Kenmare at home in Division 1 on Sunday at 2pm. Firies B away in Division 6 on Sunday at 1pm. Currow B away in Division 7B on Monday at 7:30pm. Three crucial games with just three rounds remaining and Stacks well placed in all three tables.

U21 Football: The club defends its County Championship title against Fossa on June 23rd at 7:30pm.

U15 Boys - Féile: The squad continue preparations for the national Féile finals in Derry. The recent Table Quiz

fundraiser at the club bar was a great success. Well done to all who came along and to the organisers.

Minor Boys: U17 Super 10 Tournament continues. The County League campaign begins at the end of June, depending on Kerry’s minor All-Ireland run. Division 1 opponents will be Legion, Laune Rangers and Rathmore.

U14 Boys: The B team won the Division 12 County League Final. The A team narrowly lost to the Gaeltacht in the Division 1 final by three points in a superb match. Great credit to both panels.

NA GAEIL GAA CLUB NOTES

Senior Men’s County League Division 3: A disappointing 0-17 to 0-13 defeat away to Churchill in Round 9. Na Gaeil led at half time but Churchill had a decisive purple patch in the second half. A late rally brought the gap back to two before a last-minute Churchill two-pointer ended matters.

Senior Ladies County League Division 1: Next up: home to Southern Gaels, Monday June 22nd at 7:30pm.

U13 Girls: Congratulations on winning the North Kerry Division 1 Shield Final, defeating Castleisland Desmonds.

U16 Boys: Hard luck in the Central Region Division 1 final, losing to Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane by a goal in Austin Stack Park.

Sympathy is extended to former player Jerry Maloney on the passing of his father-in-law Georgie Weir, and to John Griffin and the Culloty family on the passing of Ellen Griffin, Moyderwell. Good luck to all players sitting their Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate this week.

BALLYMAC GAA CLUB NOTES

County Medals: Huge congratulations to Róisín Rahilly who won a Munster Senior Championship medal as Kerry beat Waterford in Kilmallock. Well done to Aisling O’Keeffe who collected an All-Ireland U14 gold medal as Kerry overcame Down in Roscommon. And congratulations to Jack Joy and Máirtín McKivergan who were part of Kerry’s U20 All-Ireland winning panel. Backroom staff Kerry Hennessy, Adam O’Keeffe and Vinny Murphy also deserve great recognition for their involvement in the Kerry set-up.

Senior Ladies County League Division 2: A historic 5-09 to 1-05 win over Spa, confirming promotion to Division 1

football for next year. Ballymac were dominant throughout, leading 5-07 to 1-00 at half time. A landmark day for the ladies senior team.

U14 Girls: A hard-fought home win over Duagh, with several U12 players stepping up and not looking out of place among the older girls.

U12 Girls: A dominant home win over Ballyduff, three wins from four games and the squad showing real hunger and passion week on week.

U8 Boys: A great third Go Games of the year away to Firies in the sunshine, with the hard work in training clearly paying off.

ST PATS GAA NOTES

Dingle Way Challenge: A brilliant success with 240 participants taking on the 46km Ultra and 33km Standard routes around the Dingle Peninsula, raising vital funds for club development projects. The first Ultra man home was Brian O’Regan and the first Ultra woman was Aoife O’Sullivan. Thanks to all sponsors, volunteers and participants who made the event such a success.

Seniors: Next up: Round 9 against Rathmore B in Blennerville, weekend of June 7th.

U12 Girls: Another great Go Games performance. Next up: home to Currow, Wednesday June 3rd at 6:30pm.

KERRY FC - SSE AIRTRICITY MEN’S FIRST DIVISION

Kerry FC ended the first half of the season with a 2-0 defeat away to Cobh Ramblers at St Colman’s Park on Friday evening, going into the summer break nine points off the playoff places. Cobh scored inside three minutes through Rhys Gourdie and doubled their lead before half time when Wilson Waweru followed up after Matthew Connor saved his initial effort. Kerry improved

in the second half with Connor making several excellent saves to keep the deficit at two. Niall Brookwell struck the crossbar late on in what proved to be the closest Kerry came to a consolation goal. A notable milestone on the night was Cian Brosnan making his 100th appearance for Kerry FC. The club now recharges for the second half of the season with the FAI Cup also to come.

TRALEE PARNELLS HURLING AND CAMOGIE CLUB

Kerry Senior Hurlers: Commiserations to the Kerry Senior Hurlers who lost the Christy Ring Cup Final to Derry by five points at Croke Park on Saturday. It was a wonderful year nonetheless, culminating in a final appearance and promotion to Division 1B of the league for 2027. Club representatives on the panel were Morgan Madden, Cillian Litchfield and Diarmuid Quirke, with Ollie Broughton, Mark Ryall, Ciarán Breen and Martin Frawley also involved in the management set-up.

Kerry Senior Camogie: Well done to Kerry Camogie who beat Down, 1-06 to 0-10, in Tralee. Club players Orla Leahy and Anna Chute are part of the panel. Next up: away to Antrim on Saturday June 6th.

Senior Hurlers: Drawn in Group 3 of the County Championship alongside Crotta and Abbeydorney. Round 1 is fixed for the weekend of June 19th to 21st.

U14 Boys: Two good wins over Lixnaw and Kilmoyley in their final league rounds.

U12 Camogie: A superb U12 blitz at Páirc na Darach with AbbeyKilLix and Killarney visiting, with great football across three entertaining games.

U12 Boys: First North Kerry League game against Kilmoyley in Caherslee, a hard-fought and skillful contest between two evenly matched sides.
