SERA HUSKY ‘FAMILY FUN WEEKEND‘ IS BACK!

This vital Animal Rescue Organisation celebrates its 11th Anniversary with its ‘FUN’DRAISING SUNDAY MAY 26TH

A message from Maurice Enright , Mr ‘Sera Husky ‘ himself !

Hello everyone, It’s that wonderful time of year again as we plan our huge event for this Sunday ! It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since our last Family Day. We had an amazing turnout last year, and many of our beloved dogs found their forever homes. Unfortunately, the welfare situation has deteriorated even more over the past 12 months, and most Animal Rescues, including ours, are filled to capacity. As a small Rescue, I dream of a day when our services are no longer needed, but for now, Kerry needs more Rescues, not fewer.

This year, we’ve had to care for a wider range of wildlife, including otters, badgers, foxes, bats, ducks, rabbits, and numerous birds. Each of these rescues adds to our costs, but the support we receive on our Family Day truly helps us continue our mission. With rising costs of electricity, animal feed, fodder, bedding, and veterinary care, we are hoping for another great turnout , and hopefully the sun might shine even more ! ...fingers crossed !

There will be plenty of activities for the kids, opportunities to meet and greet, and a talk about our reptiles

and the reasons they are surrendered. We have lots of prizes to be won, including a signed Kerry jersey, and of course, plenty of dog walking to be done, so a great excuse to get more steps in ! . Most importantly, if you are interested in adding a furry, not so furry or feathered friend to your family, please come and talk to us.

Thank you once again for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Warm regards,

Sera Husky & Animal Rescue Lisselton, Co Kerry V31 WE16

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER

Grandparents Rights

Sandra and Denis have four children. Their eldest child John had a child Zara with his girlfriend Melanie and their relationship has broken down to the extent that they do not speak to each other. Melanie won’t speak to Sandra and Denis either and they would love to meet their grandchild Zara.

Sandra and Denis should first of all see if Melanie will engage with them in any shape or form e.g. writing her a nice letter or suggesting mediation. If she won’t engage, they can apply to the District Court for access. Grandparents are not automatically entitled to see their grandchildren. The best interests of the child are paramount in these cases and in relation to these grandparent’s applications particularly the court will consider the following:

• The Grandparents existing connection with the child.

• Any risk of harmful disruption of the child’s life

• The Wishes of the child’s parents/guardians

• The Wishes of the child if they can form their own views. There are also several factors the court considers under the legislation in deciding what is in the child’s best interests and all aspects of the child’s welfare are taken into account.

If an access order is granted by the court and Melanie will not comply with it Sandra and Denis can apply to court for an enforcement order. This is an order whereby the court gives a direction to Melanie that she must allow Sandra and Denis to see their grandchild in accordance with the original order. The Judge has a few options e.g. giving additional access for lost time, reimbursement of wasted expenses or requiring the parties involved to attend counselling and/or a parenting programme or engage in family reunification work. If the order is then not followed the court could potentially fine or imprison Melanie.

HAIRSTYLIST

If the court refuses an access order Sandra and Denis could appeal the matter to the upper Circuit Court.

If John or Melanie were unable to look after Zara for any reason Sandra and Denis could apply to court for Guardianship and Custody of the child. If grandparents are looking after a child they can apply for a Guardians payment from social welfare. More information on these various topics is available from the websites www.treoir.ie and www.kinship.ie

Election candidate Anne backs plan to keep childhood smartphone free

Anne O’Sullivan, a Fianna Fáil candidate in the Tralee Local Electoral Area (LEA), has said she backs Kerry Minister Norma Foley TD’s plan for voluntary agreements to keep childhood smartphone free.

It was recently announced by Minister Foley’s Department that Vodafone, Three, eir, Tesco Mobile , Virgin Media and An Post Mobile have all confirmed that they support guidelines providing advice for the setting up of voluntary agreements between parents to avoid buying smartphones for their children while in primary school.

O’Sullivan, who works as Minister Foley’s Parliamentary Assistant managing her constituency office, said that protecting young people online and helping them live their childhoods to the full is hugely important.

She said: “Local families are concerned about the impact on their children of the use smartphones in school, social media and being constantly online.

“I am supporting Minister Foley’s “Keeping Childhood Smartphone Free” guide for parents and parents’ associations of primary school age children, and I am glad to see that it recently got backing from leading phone companies.

“Research shows that constant smartphone use and always being online can cause mental health, educational and social damage to many children. However, parents

Mary , Ken , John , Oliver and Ken

As the weekend draws to a close, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the participating businesses, entertainers, stalls, demo-chefs, and our incredible partners and sponsors for making this event a success. But MOST IMPORTANTLY, thank you to everyone who came out to support Tralee! The crowds that came to town this sunny weekend

made this festival truly special once again.

Let’s keep this momentum going— come into town more often and continue to support our wonderful local businesses and town. Together, we make Tralee great! #Community Thank you from Mary, Ken, John, Oliver & Ken #TFF24

and schools can struggle to know what to do to help.

“Minister Foley’s voluntary agreements offer such a guide for parents, and I would encourage their take up wherever possible among local parents and parents’ associations.

“I believe in ensuring children are safe online and that helping children to get off their screens, away from toxic content and back talking to each other is an objective we should all share across society.”

Tralee Food Festival Returns Giving Major Boost to the County Capital

The 2024 Tralee Food Festival concluded on Sunday evening, May 19th, leaving both visitors and locals eager for more. Organizers extended the event into the evening to let attendees enjoy the sunshine and vibrant atmosphere.

A highlight was the new SoundBite entertainment area in Abbey Car Park, where local musicians performed from Friday to Sunday, creating a lively vibe. Another new addition was the Garvey’s SuperValu zone, where Mark Doe from Just Cooking hosted a popular BBQ demo on Sunday afternoon.

The festival is managed by Tralee Food Festival CLG (not for profit), led by Ken Tobin, John McCarthy, and Mary Mc Quinn, who took over in 2023. They enlisted festival experts

Oliver Hurley and Ken Murphy to help create community-focused, family-friendly events aimed at boosting local businesses and the economy. Their efforts were highly successful.

Thousands of people attended the festival, flocking to the Island of Geese, the Town Square, Abbey Car Park, and various restaurants, cafes, and bars participating in the Taste Trail. The large turnout showcased the festival’s appeal and strong local business support.

Mary Mc Quinn expressed the committee’s pride in supporting local businesses and contributing to the local economy. “We are incredibly grateful to the entertainers, vendors, and volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the

festival’s success. Thanks to our event managers, Oliver Hurley and Ken Murphy, for their dedication and expertise. We also thank our sponsors for their support and faith in us. Lastly, thanks to the people of Tralee for their enthusiastic participation. We are thrilled with the positive community response and are exploring more ways to enhance future events.”

The festival also supported local charities, including Kerry Mental Health’s ‘Office Chair Race’ on opening night and Comfort for Chemo’s ‘Cook Off’ on Sunday, both attracting large crowds.

Insightful publication ‘Giving Birth In Ireland’ to be launched at Listowel Writers Week

You are invited to the launch of the remarkable book ‘Giving Birth In Ireland’ on May 30th at Listowel Library commencing at 2.30pm. As the title suggests this all-encompassing theme of birth in Ireland will be of real interest to a broad scope of people on the island and attract enthusiasm even further afield.

Edited by Su Huschke and Leigh Brosnan “Giving Birth In Ireland’ presents a discerning and personal deep dive into the birthing process in Ireland today.

“What does every pregnant woman need to know about giving birth in

Ireland?”

This book is for all those who give birth in Ireland, and those supporting them. Written by midwives, doulas, mothers and birth partners, this book explains how the maternity system in Ireland works, what the options are, and what it really feels like to birth in this country, whether in the hospital or at home.

If you’ve given birth before, this is the kind of book that you wish you’d read before you had your baby, and which you should read now to make sense of your experience. If you’re a first-time parent, this is the book you need to read before you, or your partner, give(s) birth. If you

are a midwife or a doctor or anyone caring for pregnant women and new mothers in Ireland, this book will help you serve them better.

The authors are not afraid to tackle uncomfortable truths about the failings of the Irish maternity system, but they also share stories of hope and joy. When you’ve read the book, you’ll know your options, and you’ll be on your way to a positive, empowered birth.

The book will be launched at this year’s Writers’ Week on Thursday 30th May at 2.30pm at Listowel Library and you are all very welcome to attend.

"Really great service from start to nish. From our initial consultation with Keith, who took as much time as was necessary to understand our needs and explain the best solutions, to the installation itself, we couldn’t have been in better hands every step of the way. All the work was completed and the teams gone by the time we got home from work/school, so Keith actually came back the following day to talk us through the app and show us how to get the most out of it. Thanks to all the team at Green Energy Ireland for a very good customer experience." - John & Deirdre, Killarney

" I was a small bit dubious about the cost v bene ts aspect of moving to Solar PV, but after having met with Green Energy Ireland, who went to great lengths to ensure that I understood all the elements, I knew I was in good hands and had chosen the right partner for this part of our home upgrade project. Keith was always available, and everybody from the roofers to the electricians ensured we were kept in the loop and up to date on all the moving parts. We very much appreciated your patience and thank you for a really ne piece of work." - Maurice & family, Mallow

Farmers are at serious threat to their livelihoods after a wet spring. Green extremists supported by government and the fake opposition are exacerbating this. Cows and food production are the problem according to these loonies who themselves continually fly all over the world and drive everywhere in huge cars. It is very simple. Townies shouldn’t be telling farmers how to farm. Why does there seem to be an agenda in the establishment across europe to destroy farming. These pressures are fuelling food inflation. No Farmers Means No Food Which Means Famine. Garda morale is at rock bottom with over 10 Gardai a week leaving the force. Why wouldn’t it be, with a “leader” they have overwhelmingly rejected. The divide between Gardai and the public is also at an all time low. This is not good. The population is exploding and crime is increasing, but many towns and villages have fewer Gardai than ever, Ardfert being a prime example. Disabled children are waiting years for life saving surgeries. There is a general

lack of facilities for disabled people, and a lack of mental health services for children and adults. There is little help for carers & the elderly in terms of services, home help hours etc. However there seems to be plenty money for wars and issues in foreign countries. Imagine if we got rid of the fat cat NGOs who propagandise us, instead using the 6 billion euro a year they are paid by the government to help these vulnerable people. A good reflection of a society is how well it treats its most vulnerable. We have failed them dismally. Another prime example of the massive incompetence we are dealing with is the bottomless pit that is the children’s hospital. There is zero accountability. To top it all...when it opens there will be nowhere for potential staff to even live. It will probably lie idle for years. Don’t even get me started on the sexualisation of our kids and the trans ideologies being pushed on them in our schools. It is one thing to support kids and make them confident and proud of who they are. Indoctrinating them and

sexualising them is a very different story. Let kids be kids and enjoy the innocence of their childhood while they can.

Finally, government immigration policies are decimating tourism and restaurant businesses. Government don’t seem to care. Neither do the fake opposition. Stop uncapped, unvetted immigration.

Kerry Has Most Blue Flag Beaches In Ireland

The high standard of the coastal environment in Kerry has been acknowledged with the awarding of 15 Blue Flags for Kerry beaches and coastal amenities for 2024, the highest number in the country. Kerry has retained its current 15 Blue Flags, including 13 at beaches and one each at the Portmagee Pontoons and Fenit Marina.

The decision of the International Blue Flag jury was announced on Monday, 20 May and sees the following beaches and marinas awarded Blue Flags for 2024: Rossbeigh, Ballybunion South, Ballybunion North, Ballyheigue, Fenit, Maherbeg, Kells, Doire Fhíonáin (Derrynane), White Strand, Baile an Sceilg (Ballinskelligs), Banna, Fionntrá (Ventry), Inch, Fenit Marina and Portmagee Pontoons.

Five Green Coast Awards have been presented for Waterville, Ballinskelligs, Béal Bán, Castlegregory and Littor beaches.

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jim Finucane warmly welcomed the announcement as a very significant acknowledgement of the quality of beach environments in Kerry: ‘Blue Flags are a very important internationally recognised indicator of the quality of a beach environment and it is encouraging that Kerry emerging as the national leader in this regard.’

Cllr Finucane said that the awarding of the Blue Flags is a result of a collaborative approach between Kerry County Council, local community groups and beach users who work together to maintain our

beautiful beaches and bathing waters.

Acting Director of Services, Paul Neary added: ‘The local authority invests tremendous effort and resources in keeping County Kerry at the top of the Blue Flag list and will continue to ensure the sustainable management of the magnificent beaches along the Kerry coast.’

‘We would appeal to all beach users this summer to continue to be responsible, heeding water safety

advice and leaving nothing behind on the beach except their footprints,’ he added.
