I am so frustrated. I don’t understand why I turn to binge and emotional eating… I’m generally great at everything and feel so powerless about this!!!
Having an eating challenge is a sign that something is not in flow somewhere. There are many explanations and many avenues to explore when we have one. But when you boil it down at some point in your life, you soothed yourself with food, and your brain discovered that by you eating food no matter what type of food, the body feels less noise and discomfort.
The brain has stored this autopilot response as ‘helpful’ and does not have any consciousness about ‘the consequences of this behaviour in the act of binge or emotional eating. So when faced with difficult emotions such as boredom, loneliness, fear, and sadness our brains like efficiency and autopilot behaviour and it will default to this stored autopilot behaviour.
The good news about this behaviour is that it can be unlearned and we can also introduce other helpful habit interruption strategies.

Tralee Rowing Club claim Gold at Lee Regatta!
Tralee Rowing Club enjoyed a very successful day when they travelled to Lee Rowing Club Regatta in Cork last weekend. Paula Moloney & Edel O’Sullivan came first in the women’s masters doubles category and they also enjoyed a hard fought win in a composite eight which included Tralee Rowing Club rowers Edel O’Sullivan, Paula Moloney & Tara O’Halloran Cronin.Paula Moloney was also placed third in the women’s single scull. The club praised Lee Rowing Club who organised a wonderful and enjoyable Regatta “

Minister Foley announces multi-million euro building project for Mercy Mounthawk
Minister for Education and Kerry T.D. Norma Foley this week announced official project approval for a multi-million euro building project for Mercy Mounthawk Secondary school, Tralee.
This major project will provide for an additional six-classroom extension to the Mercy Campus in Tralee.
The project brief will deliver four new mainstream classrooms through
the Department’s state-of-the-art modular framework as well as two classrooms dedicated to the provision of special education.
Today the school has received initial project approval and a design team and project manager has been designated from the Department’s Framework, to design and tender the project and oversee all elements of construction.

MTU Academics nominated to CORU by Minister of Health
Munster Technological University (MTU) has announced that Professor Muiris O’Laoire, an academic at MTU, has been appointed to CORU, the health and social care professionals council, by Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly.
CORU is responsible for regulating health and social care professions and approving education and training for these fields. Professor O’Laoire, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Health and Social Sciences, is a renowned scholar and researcher in linguistics and early years education. He brings extensive knowledge of national and
international education standards and systems to his new role.
Dr. Patrick McGarty, another MTU colleague, was also appointed to the board of CORU by Minister Donnelly. Dr. McGarty is a public policy specialist and has lectured in social care and public policy in Ireland and abroad.
Both appointments are seen as a recognition of their academic and professional expertise in the higher education sector and are seen as positive for the MTU community.

Don’t feel obligated to complete the 48km or 32km just because you choose it at the start. Make sure you are comfortable with the route you have chosen and know that we are here to cater to whatever length you wish to do. We want you to enjoy the scenery but also to be kept safe and looked after during this event. You can tell any of the lead walkers who will be accompanying you on the walk or at any of the food stops if you have had enough and we will do our best to get you home quickly and safely. The Donal Walsh Spa 6K Challenge 2023
Last Monday, the 2023 ‘Donal Walsh Spa 6K Challenge’ was launched at Spa National School, creating an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation. This event has become a beloved tradition on the community calendar in Spa, having been first held in 2014. This year’s edition is particularly special, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of Donal’s passing. The school community is busy preparing for a family fun day on Sunday, May 28th, in honor of Donal, their former student. “Donal and his ‘live life’ message have inspired and given hope to many over the past decade. We want to celebrate and honor him in our own special way by creating an event where people of all ages and fitness levels can come together for a few hours, have fun, and ‘live life’ just as Donal urged us all to,” said school principal Peter Linehan. “Huge credit must go to our Parents Association, who have been working tirelessly over the past few weeks to ensure that everything will be ready,” he added.
The school will be bustling with activity on the day of the event, with a fabulous market, children from 6th class coordinating fun games and challenges for everyone, a beautiful on-site barbecue, and live music. Your Man’s puppets will also host a lively show to entertain everyone. The highlight of the day will be the ‘Spa 6K Challenge,’ a 6 km looped run/walk starting and finishing at the school. Donal’s parents, Fionnbar and Elma, will officially start the run/walk at 11:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to participate in the event by registering on the morning from 10:00 a.m. onwards. Cancer Charity & Gaa Club Join Forces For Fun-Filled, Family Night At The Dogs
Cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry and Churchill GAA Club are joining forces for a fundraising Night at the Dogs at Tralee Greyhound Stadium on Saturday, May 20th. As well as the usual top-class race card, a fantastic night of entertainment is planned at the Tralee track, with a bumper programme of family fun also on the cards – including facepainting, a magician, bouncy castles and live music. There will also be some super spot prizes up for grabs in a fundraising raffle, which has been very generously supported by several local businesses. And for the fashionistas among you, the event will also feature a Best Dressed Ladies and Gents competition, with Celsius Menswear Tralee donating a €100 voucher for the best dressed man, while Diane Jeffers of Jasmine Boutique, Tralee, will be assessing the style amongst the ladies – and has kindly offered a €150 Jasmine voucher for the winner. Speaking ahead of the May 20th event, Churchill GAA Chairman, Kenneth Lenihan, explained the importance of the fundraising night for his club.
“This is the club’s major fundraiser for 2023, and the monies raised will enable us to push on with enhancements to our facilities in both Churchill and The Spa, as well as continuing to resource our vibrant underage scene (boys & girls) and our two senior teams,” he explained.
Equally, Recovery Haven Kerry manager, Gemma Fort, also stressed the importance of people getting behind the event in support of the charity.
“Given the increased demand for our services, we are now in the final stages of a state-of-the-art extension project at our centre at Haig’s Terrace, Tralee, which when complete, will allow us to cater for even more clients in an impressive new Haven. This fundraiser is vital in allowing us to compete this building and continue to provide even more vital services to those who truly need it in the community.”

St. Brendan’s Basketball Club Awards Night 2022/2023
St. Brendan’s Basketball Club held their Annual Awards last Friday night in the Kerry Suite at the Rose Hotel with a crowd of over 300 people in attendance. Teams from U11s up to Senior Men and Women received their KABB trophies and medals and MIP and MVP awards winners announced at the various age levels. The Club Person of the Year on the night went to Deirdre Lynch, a thoroughly deserving recipient.
There were also two Special Merit Awards on the night awarded to Amy Quirke in recognition of her Table Official of the Year award from Basketball Ireland and to Elaine Burrows Dillane recognising her amazing achievements in Open Water Swimming over the last few years. Aoife Hartnett was awarded the Table Official of the Year.
Club Chairman Pa Carey thanked the club committee, players, coaches
and managers for their service this season. He commended the efforts of the fundraising committee and the tournament organising team that put in a huge effort to ensure the many tournaments and blitzes throughout the season ran smoothly and successfully. He also made special mention of the many sponsors for their valuable and continued support for the club this year.
The club now looks forward to next season and especially 2024 when it celebrates its 30th anniversary since its foundation in 1994.
The club is also planning to have the Annual Mass and AGM next month and members and friends will be informed of the details in the coming weeks.

80-YEAR-OLD GUY GOES TO SEE A DOCTOR FOR A CHECK-UP
80-years-old guy goes to see a doctor for a routine check-up. After the doctor asks about his health, he replies "I am feeling great, I have got married to a 25-year-old girl 2 months ago, and now she is pregnant"
After the doctor thinks a bit, he replies to the guy "I will tell you a story."
"There was a man who likes hunting. Everyday he picks his rifle and goes hunting. But, one day he accidentally picked his umbrella instead of the rifle. While walking through the trees, he saw a deer just across the way . He positioned his umbrella, aimed at the deer, and bang ! The dear is dead on the ground."
The guy is surprised. He interrupts the doctor: "No way, this is impossible, someone else must have taken a shot on the deer." Doctor: "Absolutely!!!"

Free Creative activities for all U-18’s at Cruinniú na nÓg Day June 10th
Cruinniú na nÓg, a national day of free creative activities for under 18’s, was launched in Kerry on May 15th. The event, organized by the Creative Ireland Kerry Office, aims to provide a range of engaging activities and events for young people. Following an online consultation earlier in the year, the program was tailored to suit the interests and preferences of the young people in Kerry. Taking place on June 10th, Cruinniú na nÓg in Kerry offers a packed schedule from 9am to 9pm. With 34 events spread across major towns in the county, there is something to cater to all ages and tastes. The program includes workshops on sock puppet-making in Castleisland, outdoor drumming in Killorglin, and STEAM workshops featuring Green Screen technology in Cahersiveen. Notably, Fanzini will make their debut appearance in Dingle, presenting “Guido Fanzini’s Thunderous Entertainment
Haberdashery” in the enchanting
An Díseart Gardens. Kenmare will host a full-day acting workshop and a concert, while Killarney will offer art, dance, drumming, heritage, wildlife workshops, and teenage film screenings. In Tralee, participants can enjoy craft and music workshops, a fashion exhibition, and youth theatre performances. Listowel provides arts and craft workshops along with a storytelling session, and an online Japanese Notans paper cutting art workshop is also available. To access the program details, a brochure can be downloaded in English, Irish, Polish, and Ukrainian from the Kerry Arts Office website. English and Irish brochures are also available at local libraries. Additionally, all events are listed on the national website.

Historic Night as Kerry FC claim their first League win!
Kerry FC secured a historic victory in their match against Athlone Town. last weekend . The last time these teams met, Athlone won narrowly with a late goal. This time, Kerry aimed to turn the tables, but faced a challenging task. Athlone, vying for playoff spots, wanted to bounce back after their recent loss to Treaty United.
In the first half, Athlone applied intense pressure, but Kerry took the lead with a superb goal from Ryan Kelliher. Kerry extended their lead just seven minutes later through Nathan Gleeson’s strike. Despite Athlone’s persistent pressure, Kerry’s debutant goalkeeper, Aaron O’Sullivan, made excellent saves to maintain the lead.
In the second half, Athlone
continued their onslaught, hitting the crossbar twice. However, Kerry’s defense held firm, clearing crosses and parrying shots. Athlone managed to equalize with a goal from Valeriy Dolya, setting the stage for a tense finale.
A breakaway by Leo Gaxha led to a scramble in the box, and Ryan Kelliher found the net from close range. Although it initially appeared the ball had been cleared, the assistant referee correctly judged it had crossed the line, giving Kerry the winning goal.
Kerry endured intense pressure during four minutes of added time but held on for their firstever senior league victory. The team’s performance demonstrated resilience and determination.

Seniors:
Rathmore outperform Kerins O’Rahillys in Round 6 with a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-12.
Changes in the starting XV: Con Barrett and Diarmuid O’Sullivan sidelined, Stephen Nix & Tom Hoare join the side. Rathmore takes advantage of the breeze in the first half, leading 1-07 to 0-05 at halftime.
Kerins O’Rahillys struggles to gain control around the middle and loses possession.
Despite narrowing the deficit to 3 points, Rathmore secures the win with late points.
Referee issues red card to Rathmore defender and second yellow card to Kerins O’Rahillys’ Barry John. Div 6A:
Kerins O’Rahillys defeated by Fossa with a scoreline of 3-13 to 1-14.
Despite playing with the breeze in the first half, Kerins O’Rahillys trails by 3 points at halftime.
Fossa capitalizes on the space and wins with a goal in the 22nd minute.
Kerins O’Rahillys fights back but falls short as Fossa secures the victory.

Kerry’s first game against Mayo takes place on Saturday at 3 pm in Killarney. Mayo has shown improvement under Kevin McStay and performed well in the national league.

SENIOR FOOTBALL:
Our Senior team will face Dingle on Sunday, May 21st, in round 7 of the Co. League. Dingle currently holds the 7th position, while we are in 9th place.
B FOOTBALL:
In a windy but dry match in
Ballylongford on May 14th, our B team secured their first Co. League points with a good win. Although the result doesn’t affect our position on the League Table, it was a promising performance leading up to the Championship.
U21 FOOTBALL:
Our U21 team will play against South Kerry in the opening round of the Co. Championship at Connolly Park on Wednesday, May 17th, at 7pm. Best of luck to the squad.
All-Stars:
The Austin Stack Club All-Stars program aims to help neurodivergent children connect and flourish in sports.
Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the Austin Stack Club on Sunday (21st) at 10 am to participate.
Peil Faoi 13:
Phase 2 of the County League started for both the A and B teams in Connolly Park on Sunday (14th May).
The B team achieved another comprehensive victory, while the A team lost to the Killarney boys. Training will continue for both teams in preparation for a local derby against the John Mitchel Club U13s.
Faoi 15:
The A team played Na Gaeil in the semifinal of the County League (Division 2) and despite a good effort, they lost.
The B team’s semi-final against Laune Rangers was postponed, and a new date is awaited.
Faoi 15 - Tralee CBS:
The Tralee CBS team, with players from Austin Stack Club, won the Kerry Schools U15 football competition against Intermediate School Killorglin. The final score was Tralee CBS: 4-15; Intermediate School Killorglin: 3-7.
Faoi 17:
The minor team performed well against An Ghaeltacht in the semi-final of the Central League (Division 2).
The Kerry Minors are preparing for their upcoming Munster Minor Football Championship match.
Ciarraí:
Best wishes to the Kerry Minors and the senior hurling team in their respective matches.

JOHN MITCHELS CLUB NOTES
John Mitchels Club Notes May 15th 2023:
In the Senior Men’s game, Mitchels secured a well-deserved victory against Listry with a scoreline of 2-13 to 0-9. It was a lovely afternoon for football, although the match had some feisty moments against a tough opposition. The victory away from home was celebrated, and credit was given to the mentors and squad.
The Senior Ladies squad had two well-attended training sessions focused on fitness, skills, and tactics. They are preparing for their next game in the Donal Curtin Cup, which is set to be a home game against an Annascaul/
Castlegregory combination on May 28th.
The under 12 girls had a match against Dingle in the div 4 North Kerry Ladies League Shield Final. Despite a strong display of football and incredible teamwork, they were unable to secure the victory. Training will continue on Sundays and Wednesdays, and newcomers are welcome to join.
The under 14 girls’ team traveled to Tarbert but couldn’t match the strong North Kerry side. The under 16 girls had an away match against Na Gaeil in the County League. It was a hard-fought game, and both teams showed strong performances. Mitchels’ defense held up well, but they were ultimately defeated by a stronger Na Gaeil side. Training will continue as they prepare for their next game.
The minors had a disappointing loss to a strong Firies team in the County League. Mitchels fought hard but couldn’t overcome the Firies’ attack. Training will continue as they aim to bounce back in their next game.
ST PATS GAA CLUB UPDATE:
U11: St. Pats U11s had training sessions with impressive efforts from players. Jace returned from injury, and Fionn, Noah, Thomas, and newcomer Sean showed great commitment.
U12 Girls: U12 girls had a fantastic win against Abbeydorney. Training continues, and the next game is against Listowel.
U13: U13 team played well against Gneeveguilla despite the loss. Special mentions to Thomas Colivet and James Daly. Training schedule announced.
U14 Girls: Training continues for U14 girls on Monday and Friday evenings.
U15: U15s performed strongly in a match against Tarbert. Training continues.
U17: U17s had a great win and will focus on training in the upcoming week.
U21 County Championship: St. Brendan’s begin their campaign against Dr Crokes on May 17th.
Seniors: St. Pats had a close game against Beale, with notable performances from various players. The team prepares for their next match against Ballyduff.
TRALEE PARNELLS CLUB UPDATES:
U12 Camogie:
U12s achieved a great victory over Sliabh Luachra. Each Parnells player performed exceptionally well. Training continues on Friday nights at Caherslee from 6 to 7pm. New players
are welcome, with equipment available for borrowing.
U16 Camogie:
The U16 camogie squad continues to excel this season. They secured a win against a strong Killarney side in the County League.
Thanks to Killarney for a competitive game. Well done to all players.
The team will have a break during exams but will continue training.
Minor Hurling:
The Minors started their Division 1 County League campaign last week, facing Crotta/Kilmoyley and Ballyduff. Despite fielding weakened teams due to injuries and player unavailability, they put in a commendable effort.
Last league match against St Brendans awaits, with hopes of welcoming back injured players.
Féile Skills:
Anna Chute represented Kerry in the Munster Féile Skills final in Mallow, demonstrating her talent.
Table Quiz:
The club will host a Table Quiz on May 26th at Na Gaeil clubhouse at 8pm. Funds raised will support sending the U15 Camogie squad to the Féile na nGael Camogie finals in Mayo.
Tables of four cost €40. Limited spots available, so contact David to reserve a spot.
Finger food and spot prizes will be provided. All are welcome to attend.
