The Head to Tail of Autumn infestations!

Headlice and worms are both lovers of humans of all shapes and forms! They don’t discriminate against anyone; be they healthy, unhealthy, clean, dirty, young, old. Each of us is equally susceptible to picking these up, so between this column and the next one, I’ll share some tips for prevention and treatment.

Headlice:

It’s tricky to prevent spread of headlice, especially when children are in close contact with each other at school. Headlice will happily hop from head to head and are specially evolved to help them to grip to human hair. Anecdotally, it seems that insects in general dislike the scent of tea tree oil, so a Head Lice Defence Tea Tree Spray is worth the few seconds spritzing in the morning before school.

To detect headlice, use a fine comb and comb section by section, combing through wet, conditioned hair from root to tip. Headlice are small, dark insects, approximately 3mm long. Their eggs, ‘nits’, are brown or white spheres which attach to the hair.

If you find live lice, treat immediately. Check everyone in the house and treat only those whose hair contains lice. The main stay of headlice treatment is combing however, so continue to fine comb all heads in the house on day 1, 5, 9, 13 and finally on day 17. Don’t repeatedly treat unless live lice are present as this can contribute to the dreaded ‘treatment resistance’.

For pregnant moms, we recommend fine combing along with the rest of the house. To treat, slather the hair in olive oil, wrap in cling film overnight and fine comb in the morning – this is a non-chemical means of killing the lice by suffocating them.

In our next column on 8th October, we’ll give some practical tips for preventing and managing worms for you & your family, as well as treatment options!

Worm and headlice treatments are available in your pharmacy without a prescription.

Your pharmacist will be happy to advise on the appropriate product and advice.

Succulent chicken breasts filled with a creamy garlic and herb sauce – you’ve got to love a Kiev!

Ingredients

◆ 800g floury potatoes, such as Desiree or Maris Piper, cut into thick chips

◆ Low-calorie cooking spray

◆ 1 small onion, finely chopped

◆ 2 garlic cloves, crushed

◆ 125g plain quark

◆ ½ small pack fresh parsley, roughly chopped

◆ 4 large skinless and boneless chicken breasts

◆ 1 medium egg, beaten

◆ 2 slices wholemeal bread from a small 400g loaf, whizzed into breadcrumbs

◆ Steamed carrots, broccoli and green beans, to serve.

◆ Method

Method

1. Preheat your oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6.

2. Cook the chips in a pan of boiling water for 4-5 minutes, then drain well. Spread out on a large non-stick baking tray in a single layer and spray with low-calorie cooking spray. Season lightly and set aside.

3. Put a small non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onion and garlic with a splash of water for about 3 minutes, or until they begin to so en. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly.

4. Put the quark, onion, garlic and parsley in your blender. Season lightly and blend for about 1 minute or until nearly smooth. Slice a pocket into the top of each chicken breast, making sure not to cut all the way though. Spoon a quarter of the quark mixture into each piece of chicken and press the edges closed to seal as much as possible.

5. Brush a chicken breast with egg, then sprinkle a quarter of the breadcrumbs over the top. Repeat with the remaining chicken breasts. Place on a non-stick baking tray, lined with baking paper. Bake the chips on the top shelf, with the chicken underneath, for 25-30 minutes, turning the chips halfway, or until both are golden and the chicken is cooked through.

6. Divide everything between 4 plates, grind over some black pepper and serve hot, with the steamed veg.

Bricks n’ Mortar...

Tommy’s current market outlook...

It is hard to find a home to buy these days…it is also near impossible to find commercial property.

It is well documented that there is a shortage of homes available to purchase but it should be noted that when it comes to purchasing industrial property or leasing commercial space the options available are also few and far between.

Given recent trends of people working from home or relocating to Kerry for a better work life balance there has been a direct pick up in demand for all types of property.

Another trend we are seeing in relation to demand for commercial space in particular is the level of start-ups / entrepreneur’s seeking smaller or medium sized units which is

fantastic. This has been really evident in the last couple of months but the best example of this demand could be put into context by stating that we have had over 15 different users/business types express an interest in a selection of small and medium sized units we launched only a week ago in Fenit.

All enquirers are looking to be part of the vision of my clients to have a community hub operate from the former Lighthouse Hotel. (Subject to obtaining the necessary planning consents) My client, following advice from planners/architects, set out to source like minded entrepreneur’s/start-ups who can complement their new venture, NAVO, as well as the community as a whole. With the Greenway due to

be completed before long it is clear that people want to commit to Fenit and feel that their quality of life will be improved given the lifestyle available.

At a time where there is great shortage of commercial stock it is great to be able to offer this alternative to the market. The following images show

the concept for the property and were created by DMAArchitects. Further information and images are available on www.tommycarmody.ie

Speak soon, hopefully.

Minister Simon Harris visits Kerry ETB

Kerry ETB was delighted to welcome Simon Harris, TD, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science to meet Kerry ETB Learners, Apprentices and staff teams at Kerry College and Youthreach Tralee last Monday 20 September 2021. The Minister’s visit commenced at Tralee Youthreach, where he saw for himself the life changing impact of inclusive education strategies on a group of young people. He then continued on to Kerry College, Monavalley Campus to tour the Media Centre and Wind Turbine Maintenance Workshop and meet Apprentices. The visit ended at Kerry College, Clash Campus where he met Learners preparing for progression to Higher Education as well as direct entry to employment. Kerry ETB further education

and training provision is a blueprint for the FET College of the Future, in line with the new national strategy for the further education and training (FET) sector.

The core features of the new model are flagship college campuses, like Kerry College, with hubs and satellites in the community. Learner supports from academic, IT, laptop loans, training allowances or SUSI grants, to adult guidance and psychological counselling provision, are embedded. Access for all inclusion strategies, digital learning, literacy integration and English for speakers of other languages are central to the model.

“It was refreshing yesterday to visit with students and staff at both Kerry College campuses in Tralee, as well as the town’s Youthreach Centre, where I was inspired by the students’ stories about how

inclusive education had offered them hope and positivity for the future”, the Minister said. At Kerry College Monavalley Campus the Minister was given a tour of the Media Centre and Wind Turbine maintenance workshop. “I was also delighted to learn about the incredible courses on offer at Kerry College, courses which target the demands of employers in a rapidly changing environment “As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, we need to ensure that people have the skills they need to succeed in life, and it’s clear the Kerry ETB has produced a suite of courses to deliver exactly that for its students”, said Minister Harris. Finally, the Minister moved on to Kerry College Clash Campus .

welcoming Minister Harris stated “on behalf of Board and staff of Kerry ETB, I am delighted to welcome Minister Harris to Kerry ETB for his visit to Kerry College and Tralee Youthreach. Kerry ETB has a proud record in delivering excellent further education and training programmes driven by a tremendously committed staff team across the county. Corrib Oil acquires Kerry’s H2 Group adding 13 retail sites to its portfolio

The H2 Group, a Kerry company founded in 2004 with a view to operating a network of award-winning Spar convenience stores and service stations, has proved a tempting prospect for bigger fish Corrib Retail who currently operate 20 convenience stores with forecourts throughout Ireland.

The Corrib Retail group have just announced plans to enter an agreement to acquire H2 Group’s 13 retail sites, 11 service stations and one convenience store all of which operate under the Texaco and Top brands logo, while all convenience stores are Spar branded.

While subject to approval by the competition regulator, this deal will see Corrib Oil expanding the Corrib Retail footprint to 33 stores in total with a further store due to open in Kenmare, Co. Kerry next month.

Commenting on the deal, Eugene Dalton, Chief Executive Officer with Corrib Oil said that the acquisition of H2 Group is a significant step in the company’s growth strategy.

‘We see great potential in the H2 Group and have acquired a network of strong and profitable businesses, led by an expert team.’

Having maintained a 22-year relationship with BWG Foods, all Corrib Retail convenience stores are branded as Spar, while all forecourts are branded Circle K or Texaco, with instore partners including Insomnia and Chopped.

The Corrib Distribution business supplies home heating oil, road fuels and lubricants from 21 distribution sites, operating a fleet of 78 road trucks and 69 service vehicles across the country.

Sean Heaphy, Managing Director of the H2 Group said that the acquisition was a positive development and a great opportunity for both businesses.

‘The merger of both businesses means we’re creating a larger retail group and offering in Ireland and we can capitalise on this scale for our employees, suppliers and business partners.’ Heaphy will join Corrib Oil as a director.

Huge clean-up effort by people in County Kerry for the Big Beach Clean

After a break in 2020, the Big Beach Clean took place over the weekend between 17th and 19th September and Clean Coasts were overwhelmed with the incredible support and commitment shown by communities across Ireland. The Big Beach Clean is an annual call to action that takes place in September at the end of the bathing season. Volunteers around Ireland were asked to register their clean up event and take part in a worldwide citizen science project, as part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), operated internationally by Ocean Conservancy. This year, a record number of over 400 clean-ups were organised by volunteers who removed 42 tonnes of litter across the country. In addition, more volunteers joined clean-ups facilitated by Clean Coasts officers in 8 different locations around Ireland. In county Kerry, volunteers organised clean-

ups in 10 different locations, removing approximately 1.8 tonnes of marine litter.Among these volunteers, Clean Coasts group Banna Coastcare saw a fantastic turnout for the beach clean event, with 67 willing collecting 30 bags of litter.

Rachel Geary, a representative of the group said: “We all have a responsibility in caring for our coastline, our beaches are important places for numerous reasons so it’s great to give a little back so we can continue to enjoy them. Banna and the surrounding area have so much to offer. Designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Special Protection Area (SPA) because of the diversity of habitats and species, we need to do more than just clean up the litter, we need to protect and restore our vulnerable habitats.”

Sinead McCoy, Coastal Communities Manager, said: “After a break in 2020 due to Covid, we were excited

to host the Big Beach Clean again, but we didn’t know what to expect. This year there was a significant increase in clean-ups organised, but in a different format: we saw more people registering for cleanups as individuals or within their household.”

Sinead continued: “This year,

there was an over 5% decrease in litter found across Ireland. Overall this is an incredible improvement. The work that Irish volunteers do all year round to tackle litter and less waste dropped by more conscious beach users mean that we are heading in the right direction!”

THE 'HIDDEN EASY CHICKEN' PIECES!!!

Did you know that Chicken thighs easily have the most flavour on a chicken? They can be be bought cheaply, and are so versatile to cook... in so many different ways... But most of all, they make a quick easy and tasty dinner!

EASY TARRAGON CHICKEN

INGREDIENTS

• 20g butter

• 200g lardons or bacon cut into 1cm pieces, smoked or unsmoked

• 8 free-range chicken thighs

• 1 onion, halved and thinly sliced

• 2 bay leaves

• 1 leek, halved and thinly sliced, white and pale green part only

• 1 large carrot, cut into 1cm dice

• 1 celery stick, trimmed and diced

• 300ml white wine

• 500ml chicken stock

• 3-4 whole sprigs of tarragon and about 2-3 tbsp freshly chopped tarragon leaves

• 130g petits pois peas (frozen is fine)

METHOD

1. Melt the butter in the casserole over a medium-high heat and fry the lardons/bacon until golden and crisp. Scoop them out of the pan with a slotted spoon and put on a plate while you get on with the rest. Season the chicken well with salt and pepper, then brown it in the lardon pan, skin-side down. You may need to do this in batches. When the skin is beautifully golden – this should take about 12 minutes – put the chicken on the plate with the lardons.

2. Lower the heat to low-medium and sauté the onion with a good pinch of salt and the bay leaves, stirring from time to time, until the onion is softened and golden from the chicken fat. This will take 15 minutes at least. Add the leek, carrot and celery and continue to fry gently for 5 minutes. Splash in the wine and let it reduce to a third – just coating the vegetables really – before pouring in the stock.

3. Add the tarragon sprigs, tied in a little bundle with kitchen string, then return the lardons and the chicken to the pan, placing the chicken skin-side up. You want the liquid to come halfway up the chicken but not to cover it – add some water if you need a bit more liquid. Partially cover and simmer gently for 20 minutes.

4. Remove the lid and simmer until the sauce has thickened a bit (about another 10 minutes or so). Take the pan off the heat, remove the tarragon sprigs and add the peas – leave for 5-10 minutes to cook in the residual heat and cool it down enough so you can add the crème fraîche without it curdling. Stir in the chopped tarragon, check the seasoning and add more salt and pepper if necessary

TORQUING CARS!

ID LIFE IS KEY TO VOLKSWAGEN OVERTAKING TESLA

Volkswagen head Herbert Diess on Sunday said autonomous cars, not electric vehicles, were the “real gamechanger” for the auto industry, which is facing the end of combustion engines in Europe by 2035. Diess’ comments signal the pace at which the 62-year old tries to transform Europe’s largest carmaker by basically saying that the shift towards batterypowered electric vehicles (EV), which still needs to be backed up by actual sales, was sealed.“Autonomous driving is really going to change our industry like nothing else before,” Diess said in Munich ahead of the official opening of the IAA car show, adding the shift towards electrified cars was “kind of easy” in comparison.“The real gamechanger is software and autonomous driving.” Diess spoke as environmental pressure on the auto sector is ramping up, with the European Commission in July proposing an effective ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035.On Friday, Greenpeace and German environmental NGO Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) said they would take legal action against German carmakers, including Volkswagen, if they failed to step up their policies to tackle climate change.Diess, who was confronted by Greenpeace activists before entering the venue on Sunday, is therefore not only aiming to overtake Tesla and turn Volkswagen into the world’s largest seller of electric vehicles by 2025.Volkswagen on Monday took the wraps off the ID Life, a fully electric small car to be launched in 2025 at a cost of around €20,000 in Germany in a bid to make battery-powered cars affordable for the masses and younger generations.“The ID Life is our vision of next-generation fully electric urban mobility,” Volkswagen brand CEO Ralf Brandstaetter said at the IAA Munich car show. The ID Live, which is at a concept car stage, is a key pillar of Volkswagen’s goal to become the world’s top seller of electric vehicles by 2025 and dethrone Tesla in part by commanding lower prices.Similar in size to Volkswagen’s Polo, the ID Life will be built by the company’s Spanish Seat division and is based on the company’s dedicated EV platform, a VW spokesman said.It also comes with a video game console and a projector and screen to show movies. “The customer of tomorrow won’t simply want to get from A to B; they will be much more interested in the experiences that a car can offer,” Brandstaetter said. - Reuters

GET MORE PEOPLE USING EV'S BY 2025 ?

One way of getting thousands more electric cars on the road as quickly as possible has been outlined to the Government by businesses who lease vehicles. The Vehicle Leasing Association of Ireland (VLAI) believes it can deliver an additional 25,000 electric vehicles in the next three years if the supports to businesses are granted. The association says it is trying to accelerate the shift from internal combustion engines (ICEs) to full EVs among its business customers – for passenger and ¬commercial vehicles. But as the price of an EV is “substantially more expensive” than a comparable ICE vehicle, the cost to business and individual company car drivers is far more expensive, the association claims.

It makes its case in a special pre-Budget submission. It does so against the backdrop of Government targets to cut emissions from EVs by having 181,000 electric vehicles on the road by 2025. In its recent submission to Government, the VLAI says its plan would give momentum towards achieving this target by increasing the number of leased EVs.To many observers the Government target appears overly optimistic but there is a growing shift towards EVs, as latest figures show, and the VLAI obviously sees an avenue to create business and help meet targets at the same time. The VLAI, comprising key leasing concerns, have proposed changes for business to bring the cost of running EVs on their fleets closer to the traditional options. Their proposals include:- Full VAT reclaim on zero emission vehicles (full battery electric)/- BIK clarity on measures for five years and a clear incentive for BEVs over ICE ¬vehicles for drivers./At the moment BIK is at 0pc for EVs priced under €50,000. But from January 2023 the rate changes up to 22.5pc. VLAI say it should be at 8pc for the next five years and then increase incrementally “with a clear picture for drivers so they can make an informed decision”.The association added: “The current BIK structure encourages company car drivers to do more kilometres in their diesel cars, in order to achieve a lower rate of BIK. A new BIK structure for EVs would rectify this and reduce our carbon emissions.” The VLAI claims its submission has the full support of Climate Action (Department of Transport) with a letter of recommendation accompanying it to the Department of Finance.(indo motoring )

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR

REMEMBERING JAMES HARNETT:

For those who have been reading this column since I started more editions ago than I care to remember might know who James Harnett (no relation)) is. We remember him in the edition that comes out on the Friday of the Ryder Cup, usually every two years but it has been three years this time, as the man who had the idea. For the record the last Ryder Cup was in France with Europe winning easily 171/2 to 101/2 with Thomas Bjorn as captain. This means that in Ohio this weekend Padraig Harrington’s European only needs to get to 14 points to retain the trophy.

So back to James and the Golf Illustrated journalist came up with the idea of a US versus Britain clash with the American golfers crossing the Atlantic. In 1921 he convinced the USPGA to back the idea and they came up with $10,000 to send 10 golfers on the trip. James Harnett and Walter Hagan picked the American team who were beaten 9-3 with 3 halves.

There was another match in 1926 but Harnett either didn’t of or hadn’t the money to buy a Cup and it was in 1927 that the Ryder Cup was born. Samuel Ryder had made his money from selling penny packets of seeds through the mail (the first mail-order business?). Like the Ryder Cup they said it never catch on but he was hugely successful and was soon sponsoring golf, a game he only took up in his 50’s!! Ryder was in the gallery in 1926 and began to formulate a plan for 1927 and he also had the funds to buy the gold cup that he donated and as they say the rest is history.

The Ryder Cup is one of the top sporting events in the world and this weekend we will all be cheering on Europe as the take on the US. And maybe for a minute you can think of James Harnett who started it all off in what could have become to be known as the Harnett Cup!!

WHO HAS BETTER FRIENDS

A husband and wife are having a friendly debate one night, centered on the topic of who has better friends. They each offer a wide variety of anecdotes and stories, but in the end, they decide to put it to the test.

“Here’s what we’ll do,” the wife suggests. “I’ll call your friends, and you call mine. We’ll both pretend that the other person hasn’t come home yet, and that we’re worried. Whoever’s friends give the best advice about where to find us clearly know us better, and therefore are better.”

The husband agrees to the game, and they both head off into separate rooms. When they reconvene a half an hour later, the husband looks defeated.

“Okay, honey,” he says, “I think it’s pretty clear that you have better friends. Every one of them listed each of your favorite restaurants, salons, shops, and art galleries, and they had phone numbers for each of them. They knew your work hours by heart, your office extension, your boss’s name, and even the route that you take home.”

The wife shakes her head. “No, dear,” she replies, “you have better friends.”

“Why do you say that?” asks the husband. “Well,” the wife replies, “most of them said that you’d been at their place, and three of them said that you were still there.”
