Norma leads tribute to Celine ... a “powerhouse” , “a marvellous raconteur”!

“Heartfelt Sympathy to Emer, Con, Orla and families and the extended Slattery and O’Mahony families at this very sad time.

Celine was such a powerhouse. She was heart and soul community focused, dedicated to drawing people together for the betterment of all. Celine brought energy, enthusiasm and good humour to everything she was involved in. There are very few organisations in Tralee that didn’t benefit from her limitless talent and skillset. A marvellous raconteur, it was

an absolute joy to be in Celine’s company. She had a fantastic capacity to engage equally with both young and old and on many occasion had students in awe on her visits to Pres. Tralee. She always concluded those visits, even in her 90 th year, with a rousing rendition of Patricia the Stripper as only Celine could. Magical and treasured memories now.

Celine was a loyal and true friend to my family working for many years as constituency secretary for my father. She also gave years of service to the Fianna Fáil party locally and

thrived on the cut and thrust of all things political. Blessed with a sharp mind and political antennae, she was a sound judge of any political dilemma and always ready to proffer a solution.

Celine was a woman of endless charm, wit and warmth. Her sunny and generous disposition meant people were drawn to her as a moth to a flame. She was in truth, a gem of gems. Simply irreplaceable. Celie, we will hold you in our hearts always. A long life well lived. Rest easy now. Thank you for everything.”

Tralee’s Joe O’Connor Joins Solgar

Tralee and Kerry football star Joe O’Connor has been unveiled as a new ambassador for Solgar, marking a proud local connection as the brand celebrates 40 years in Ireland. The All-Ireland winning midfielder, a key figure for the Kingdom, joins the leading nutritional supplement company ahead of the 2026 championship season. Solgar is the Official Vitamin Partner of the GAA and GPA, as well as a sponsor of the GAA Museum.

O’Connor’s appointment strengthens Kerry’s presence on the national stage, with the Tralee man now part of a high-profile ambassador line-up alongside Cork’s Katie Quirke, Galway’s Niamh Mallon and Limerick’s Tom Morrissey.

The announcement also coincides

with the launch of Solgar’s new Player’s Choice Bundle for 2026 — a tailored selection of six supplements designed to support athletes through demanding training and match schedules. The range is available in health stores, pharmacies and online across Ireland.

Speaking on the partnership, Solgar said O’Connor embodies the values of performance, consistency and striving to be at your best — qualities closely associated with both Kerry football and the wider sporting community.

For O’Connor, the move represents another milestone in an already impressive career. The Tralee player said he was delighted to join the Solgar team during such a significant year for the brand, adding that it is a privilege to be part of a group

the strong link between elite

featuring some of the country’s top inter-county athletes. The partnership further highlights
sport
and performance nutrition, with a Kerry star now helping lead Solgar’s message nationwide.

KCC Priority Set for Affordable Homes

Kerry County Council has formally adopted a new Scheme of Priority to guide the allocation of homes under the Affordable Housing Scheme, a move set to shape access to housing in Tralee, Killarney and across the county.

The scheme, now approved by the Department of Housing, outlines how applications will be assessed and ranked when demand exceeds the number of homes available. It comes as the Council reviews five developer submissions for affordable housing projects — two in Tralee and three in Killarney — following an open call issued in December 2025. Under the Affordable Purchase Scheme, local authorities provide newly built homes at reduced prices to help first-time buyers and other eligible applicants bridge the gap

between market prices and what they can afford.

The newly agreed priority system introduces a structured approach to allocations. Where demand is higher than supply, 70% of homes will be allocated based on household size and suitability for the property, with further priority given according to the date and time applications are received.

The remaining 30% of homes will also consider household size and suitability, but with added weighting for applicants who have lived within the relevant Municipal District — such as Tralee or Killarney — for at least five years prior to applying.

The Scheme of Priority was initially approved by the Council’s Housing Strategic Policy Committee in February 2026 before receiving

ministerial sign-off. Councillors formally adopted the scheme at a recent Council meeting and will continue to receive updates as the assessment of developer

Kennelly Family Legacy Secured as Sale of Kerry’s Eye Enters New Era

A landmark moment has arrived for Kerry’s Eye, as the Kennelly family has agreed the sale of the much-loved local newspaper to Webprint, owned by Donagh and Jennifer O’Doherty — a move firmly rooted in protecting the title’s long-term future while honouring its remarkable legacy.

Founded in 1974 by the late Padraig Kennelly Senior and his wife Joan, Kerry’s Eye has been at the heart of community life in Kerry for over five decades. Through their vision and dedication, the Kennelly family built a publication synonymous with trusted, independent local journalism — a legacy that has stood the test of time.

In recent years, ownership rested with their sons, Padraig and Brendan Kennelly, alongside Kerry Kennelly and Financial Controller

Tom MacMahon. Their stewardship has ensured the paper remained a strong, respected voice across the county, continuing the standards set by its founders.

The decision to sell was not taken lightly. For the Kennelly family, it was guided by one clear priority: safeguarding the future of Kerry’s Eye for generations to come. A carefully considered succession plan was central to that thinking — ensuring continuity for staff, readers and advertisers alike.

Importantly, the family’s connection to the paper will continue. Padraig and Brendan Kennelly will remain actively involved, while Kerry Kennelly will continue as Picture Editor, maintaining the high visual standards the paper is known for. Speaking on the transition, Padraig Kennelly emphasised the importance

of preserving the newspaper’s independence and integrity, noting that securing the right custodians was paramount.

Incoming owner Donagh O’Doherty, a highly experienced media figure and long-time printing partner to the paper, has pledged to build on that legacy while supporting the team

into the future.

The Kennelly family also paid tribute to the people of Kerry, whose loyal support — alongside that of advertisers and staff past and present — has been the lifeblood of Kerry’s Eye for 52 years.

Q&A: COPD? What

Q: What is COPD?

A: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a long-term lung condition that makes it di cult to breathe. It includes diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. COPD is progressive, meaning it worsens over time, especially if the underlying causes are not addressed.

Q: How is smoking related to COPD?

A: Smoking is the leading cause of COPD. Cigarette smoke contains harmful chemicals that irritate and damage the airways and lung tissue. Over time, this leads to in ammation, narrowing of the airways, and destruction of the tiny air sacs responsible for oxygen exchange.

Q: Can non-smokers develop COPD?

A: Yes, although smoking is the primary risk factor, non-smokers can develop COPD due to long-term exposure to air pollution, secondhand smoke, occupational dust, or genetic factors such as alpha-1 antitrypsin de ciency.

Q: What are the symptoms of COPD?

A: Common symptoms include persistent cough, shortness of breath (especially during physical activity), wheezing, chest tightness, and frequent respiratory infections. Symptoms often develop slowly and may be mistaken for normal aging or lack of tness.

Q: Is COPD reversible?

A: COPD is not reversible, but it is treatable. Quitting smoking is the most important step to slow disease progression. Medications, pulmonary rehabilitation, and lifestyle changes can signi cantly improve quality of life.

Q: How can COPD be prevented?

A: The best way to prevent COPD is to avoid smoking or quit as early as possible. Reducing exposure to air pollutants and using protective equipment in high-risk workplaces also helps lower the risk. kind regards

A proud moment for the county unfolded at the Heights Hotel Killarney last week, as Caoimhe Lynch was selected as the 2026 Kerry Rose from a strong field of 17 entrants. Aged 28, Caoimhe is a secondary school Chaplain and English teacher based in Dublin. In 2024, she founded The Light House Project, supporting communities facing poverty and social challenges. The Wild Mind Festival returns to the North Kerry coastal village of Fenit this weekend, bringing together a vibrant mix of ideas, music, film, art and storytelling.

The festivities kick off on Thursday with Wild Mind Radio broadcasting on 104.3FM in Tralee and to the world at wildmind.ie/radio. The official opening happens on Friday evening with a keynote address by acclaimed broadcaster and presenter of RTEs Ear to the Ground programme, Ella McSweeney.

She will be setting the tone for a weekend of reflection, inspiration, and exploration having contributed to both the BBC, and RTE on nature, farming and the environment over

the years. McSweeney is just one of many voices that will be giving talks on issues as varied as conservation, our local environment in Kerry, food, farming and fishing.

On Saturday evening at 7pm in the pop up festival barn, the award winning film, Listen to the Land Speak, will pay tribute to the late broadcaster Manchán Magan. Music lovers can look forward to three standout headline performances across the weekend, culminating with a gig by renowned singer-songwriter Luke Bloom on Sunday night. On Friday night, the charismatic Aindrias de Staic takes to the stage with his signature blend of storytelling and song.

Saturday night features a more up-tempo offering when DJ duo Mynameisjohn and Ali Daly take to the decks of the Festival Club at the Tralee Bay Sailing Club. Film takes centre stage in this year’s festival programme, with Sunday’s

screening of Our Blue World offering a compelling exploration of our relationship with the oceans.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Fenit, the Wild Mind Festival offers a unique opportunity to reconnect— with nature, with ideas, and with each other. The festival brings new voices to the fore and talks about

how we live, how we manage our environment and how we get to grips with the wild environment of County Kerry!

Tralee Interest Builds as Assess Ireland Rally of the Lakes Welcomes McRae Return

There’s a strong Tralee connection to one of Kerry’s biggest sporting weekends, as excitement ramps up for the 2026 Assess Ireland International Rally of the Lakes, officially launched at the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney. With rally fever building across the county — and plenty of fans travelling from Tralee — this year’s event, backed by Assess Ireland, promises one of the most competitive line-ups in years. A massive 170-car entry has been confirmed, including rising star Max McRae, nephew of rally legend Colin McRae, marking a special return of the famous name to Kerry roads. Among those adding a local and regional dimension is Conor Deasy, whose involvement ensures strong

interest from the Tralee motorsport community, alongside a host of Kerry crews competing across multiple classes.

Clerk of the Course Tim Clifford unveiled a packed programme featuring 14 stages over three days, with iconic routes like Moll’s Gap and Ballaghbeama joined by refreshed and extended sections. The rally begins with a ceremonial start in Killarney town on Friday, May 1, before a full weekend of high-speed action.

The event continues to be a major draw for fans from across Kerry, with Tralee expected to have a significant turnout both competing and supporting. The combination of world-class talent, local pride, and a compact, spectator-friendly route

ensures another standout weekend. Programmes will be available in shops from April 22, as anticipation builds for what promises to be a

thrilling Rally of the Lakes — firmly on the radar for motorsport fans across Tralee and beyond.

Wander Wild Draws 5,000 to Killarney

The fifth annual Wander Wild Festival has been hailed a major success, with a significantly expanded programme of 153 events across the weekend, up from 120 last year. Strong pre-event demand saw many experiences sell out in advance, while favourable weather conditions helped drive a surge in last-minute bookings.

Now firmly established as Ireland’s leading outdoor, culture and wellness festival, Wander Wild welcomed an estimated 5,000 attendees to Killarney. Free events at the lively Basecamp hub in the town centre complemented a wide range of ticketed experiences, creating a vibrant festival atmosphere throughout.

Spanning 26,000 acres of Killarney National Park and the surrounding town, the programme celebrated nature, movement and connection. Highlights included guided hikes, water-based adventures, immersive nature experiences, wellness sessions and live entertainment. The Wellness Hub dome at Killarney

House & Gardens proved especially popular, offering a tranquil retreat with a range of calming activities. Among the standout events were Tadgh O’Brien’s Social Summit of Mangerton, the Hidden Valley hike with Killian Buckley, and a live How to Gael podcast featuring Louise Cantilon and Doireann Ní Ghlacáin.

Hermitage Green also delivered a memorable intimate performance at St Mary’s Church of the Sloes. Festival-goers embraced a packed schedule that included sunrise dips, paddleboarding, kayaking, bat walks, fireside chats and cultural talks.

The ‘Rave ar Rothar’ cycle and free Basecamp gigs added energy, while the Wildlings programme proved a hit with families.

A volunteer-led, not-for-profit initiative, the festival also engaged 232 students from nine schools through its education programme. Organisers praised the strong community spirit, support from local businesses and volunteers, and overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees.
