Medical Matters ORAL REHYDRATION FOR CHILDREN WITH VOMITING OR DIARRHOEA - DR DAVID BUCKLEY If your child has an upset stomach, vomiting or diarrhoea it is best to give them small quantities of isotonic fluids regularly. The following are good options:

With oral rehydration, you should attempt to give one to one and a half times the usual feed volume for children up to two years of age.

• “Dioralyte sachets” (natural, citrus or blackcurrant flavour). The powder is mixed with 200ml (7 fluid ozs) of boiled cooled water.

For children two years to twelve years of age, give 200mls (7fluid ozs) after each loose bowel motion or after vomiting. The rehydration fluid should be given slowly by sips over two to four hours.

• Isotonic sports drinks such as “Lucozade sport”. • If you have nothing, else give half pure fruit juice mixed with half water (50/50). Do not give water, milk or 7Up to children with upset stomachs. If the child shows signs of dehydration such as dry mouth, dry nappies or very lethargic you should seek medical advice.

If vomiting persists for more than 24 hours or if there is signs of an underlying serious illness such as high fever, headache , rash or stomach pains not responding to Calpol please contact your doctor immediately (or SouthDoc, Tel =1 850 335 999, if it is out of office hours).

Protect Your Android Phone

It may seem a little far-fetched that malware can make its way onto our phones and tablets. After all, viruses are something that computer owners have to worry about. There’s no way that something like Android malware exists, right? Unfortunately, while there may have been a time where installing antivirus on a phone would have raised eyebrows, things aren’t as simple anymore. Malware developers are always looking for the most prolific technology out there to ensure their attacks hit as many people as possible. Back when smartphones were relatively new, you probably wouldn’t have worried so much about viruses. Now that smartphones have made their way into everyone’s lives, virus developers have stepped up their own game and began to target them. Don't wait to get infected go the Playstore and download free antivirus like AVG

Slow Laptop or Desktop Computer

Consider changing your old hard for a solid-state drive (SSD). An SSD can speed up your everyday tasks by up to six times. SSDs use flash memory to eliminate the moving parts present in HDDs, allowing the computer to find files faster. For laptops, SSDs are more durable and energy-efficient. Most laptop makers are using SSDs for new laptops because they are more durable, lighter weight, and use less battery power than hard drives. Why buy a new laptop when your old one is working perfect just very slow call us now to breath new life into it for the third of the cost of a new one Call HRI Services 0878316664 for more information

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Croí needs a bigger Heart! (and another Restaurant) What do you do when the business you started less than 2 years ago is beginning to outgrow its location ? Why you move to a bigger location of course !! ...and exactly what Chef Noel Keane ( Tralee Advertisers celebrity chef !) and his partners Kevin O Connor and Chef Paul Cotter are doing with their Award laden Croí restaurant located in the Square and the Tess Quarter in Tralee.. Where are they moving, you ask ? To Princess Street beside the Brandon Hotel (where previous restaurants such as Duffins/Restaurant Unos and more recently Rustique have traded) “ Its a great location , spread out over 2 floors “ says Noel and work has already begun for a dramatic transformation which will be unveiled in early April . Croí will close after Mothers Day but fear not as these guys are not relinquishing this fantastic location as they plan to open a new restaurant here called Grá Bistro with Chef Kevin Cotter remaining at the helm. “The food concept of Grá is a more family orientated restaurant serving up Burgers, Fajitas , Italian pasta at great prices “ says Kevin. Croí will continue to grow in its new location which will offer a

larger lounge area , private party room and a full bar licence . ”Overall we will be providing 25 jobs between the 2 restaurants “ says Noel with extra part-time seasonal employment also available . “In fact most of the positions are filled already ..” Not bad for three Amigos! Watch this space

Clocks go forward this weekend...for the last time??? The European Parliament has this week said that seasonal clock changes should be abolished in 2021 and it is up to the Member States to choose between winter or summer time. Member States, including Ireland have until next year (1st April 2020) to decide whether they want to stay on summertime or not. This week , a large majority of MEPs voted in favour of the Transport and Tourism’s proposal to abolish the seasonal clock change in 2021. It is now up to the Member States to choose between summer or standard time. Those choosing summer time should do the switch on the last Sunday in March 8

2021. Countries that prefer to keep the standard time may do so from the last Sunday in October 2021. Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune said is very much in favour of abolishing the clock changes but there needs to be measures put in place if it does go ahead. “Should significant problems arise, for example with timetables in the transport sector or flight schedules for airlines, in this case, the EU Commission has the possibility to trigger a 12-month delay of the legislation in order to change it to deal with the problems,” said MEP Clune. MEP Clune said: “I am very Friday 29th March 2019

much in favour of abolishing the seasonal time changes. It is high time to address this now. Its introduction did not lead to the expected benefits, such as energy savings. Instead, there are serious warnings from doctors about health hazards caused by the bi-annual time change.”

such as improved outcomes for road safety and economic benefits. In addition brighter evenings in winter would have a positive benefit for public health,” added MEP Clune.

“There are many benefits to ending the process of changing the clocks each year Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

Warrior spirit wins as Tralee savours Super League glory Following the heart stopping action in Belfield on Saturday night, the second act of the compelling season ending drama was played out to a sold out Tralee Complex on Sunday, when Garvey’s Tralee Warriors reached the summit of Irish basketball to capture the Super League title in just their third season in the competition. The fans queued from just after 2.00pm outside the spiritual home of the Warriors and when the huge crowd took their seats the music of the sensational Liam O’Connor had the courtside

audience in the bleachers dancing in the aisles half an hour before the game tipped off at 5.00pm. The atmosphere was absolutely sensational as the Warriors faithful sensed that it could just be their time. Just before 7.00pm they realised it was their time with a momentous victory that will become the stuff of Kerry sporting folklore in years to come. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Mercy Mounthawk Fundraiser in Barrow In the unexpected balmy sunshine of last Saturday March 23rd, Mercy Mounthawk , Tralee held a fundraising Golf Classic at Tralee Golf Club. As one participant put it, ‘we could not have paid for the day’ and the participants and visitors fully appreciated the spectacular course and panoramic scenery in the warmth of a March day. There was a full turn out for the event. All slots were taken and that of course made for a very successful fundraiser for the school. According to Mr. O’Roarke (Principal), ‘fundraising events are vital to our school to ensure that extra and co-curricular activities that are so critical to the wellbeing of our students can be provided and maintained. This

fundraiser will support the very successful sports programmes of Mercy Mounthawk. “ We have qualified again recently for further All Ireland level competitions in basketball (both girls and boys), and at Munster level in Hurling and Athletics and participation at these levels requires funds’. “Behind every successful event, there are months of preparation and in this case the organising committee of Mary Savage and Cora McElligott worked to engage the sponsors and school community to put together a fabulous day. On behalf of the school, they wish to thank all the participants most sincerely for their support. “ In particular, we would like to thank Tralee Golf Club,

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Fenit Sun sets the Cyclists on their way!

Heres a few words from PRO Jacinta Lawlor about this great popular event What an amazing day weather wise! The cycle on Saturday was our 7th year and we were delighted with the turnout by our avid cyclists.Over 400 Cyclists registered on the day

which we were so happy with the days outcome. The cycle is a fundraiser for St.Brendan’s National School, Fenit. We will also make a donation to Palliative Care Unit Kerry General Hospital . Words of thanks must go to ...Fenit Coastal Cycle

Committee & St. Brendan’s National School would like to thank all the cyclists who travelled from many counties to be with us today for making our event a fantastic day & the weather was spectacular! We would like to thank all the volunteers, stewards,

members of the community, Kerry Civil Defence & Dr. Arthur’s - Our medical team and the Gardai. A huge thank you to all our SPONSORS who we could not have done without their support again this year.

Kerry College of Further Education’s (KCFE) Recruitment Fair 2019 Employers came in large numbers to the annual Kerry College of Further Education Recruitment Fair entitled “Future@KCFE” seeking to recruit students who are about to complete a wide range of courses at the college. A smart move by employers ase the college produces industry ready graduates with indemand skillsets. There were over 35 organisations represented at the event covering a range of sectors allowing hundreds of students to network with future employers on the day. Employers find this event invaluable not only to source new employees but to meet up with management and teachers of KCFE

and enhance industry collaborations.

“Many of the current students have already received offers of employment as a result of their successful completion of work experience. For those who have not yet secured employment, the event provided a wonderful opportunity to secure both full-time and part-time/summer positions. KCFE wish to thank all the employers for their participation in this event. Their support is testament to the high esteem with which the Kerry College of Further Education and its graduates are held” said Mary Lucey, Principal of KCFE.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2019

Time for Tasty Ham Hock! ...What? ...I hear you say!

... A much overlooked and under - used cut of meat is the pork hock

This cut has amazing flavour, is always available and fantastic value .The Cut can be used in so many ways, so here is an easy one to try to start with...

SLOW COOKER HAM HOCK AND CHICKPEA STEW

Serves 6

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • •

8 cups hot water 4 smoked ham hocks (2 1/2 pounds) 1 1/2 cups dried chickpeas, soaked overnight and drained 3 large carrots, cut into 2-inch lengths 1 medium onion, cut into 1-inch dice 2 bay leaves 2 thyme sprigs Three medium (6-ounce) potatoes, peeled and quartered 1/2 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley Salt and freshly ground pepper

METHOD Step 1 In a slow cooker, combine the water, ham hocks, chickpeas, carrots, bay leaves and thyme sprigs. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour and 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, Add the potatoes, cover and cook on low for 1 hour and 45 minutes, until the chickpeas, ham hocks and potatoes are tender. Step 2 Transfer the ham hocks to a large plate. Discard the bay leaves and thyme sprigs. When the hocks are cool enough to handle, remove the meat and coarsely chop it. Return the ham to the soup. Using a paring knife, cut the carrots in the cooker into bite-size pieces. Transfer the potatoes to a bowl and mash to a puree. Stir the mashed potatoes into the soup along with the parsley. Season with salt and pepper and serve.

CHOOSING A MAKEUP ARTIST (MUA) FOR YOUR WEDDING There are lots of different Makeup Artists out there and choosing the right one for you and your style is very important, especially if it’s an important event or a wedding. Pictures last forever and you don’t want to end up spending time and money only to end up disappointed. DO RESEARCH First and foremost, look up a few Makeup Artists in your area. Look at their work, look at their qualifications and look and their experience. If you know someone who got their makeup done by that Makeup Artist, message them, ask how they got on. Everyone has different tastes in makeup so make sure that if you like dramatic makeup the artist can do that or if you’re more on the natural side make sure they can do that. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY The Makeup Artist you’re choosing is a professional. He/ She has a craft and should charge according to their experience and training. If you’re looking for the cheapest person for the job, they mightn’t necessarily be the best, and the same goes for the most expensive. If it’s your wedding, I recommend not to skimp on your Makeup Artist, it’s one day, pay a bit extra for better quality. On another note, just because a Makeup Artist uses expensive high end brands, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re good. I have both high end and drugstore brands in my kit, I just use what works best, not what looks good in the kit. HAVE A TRIAL If it’s a wedding day or even a debs or graduation, if you’re anyway unsure, have a trial! That way you can see how the

Makeup Artist works and how the makeup stays on. KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TELL THE MAKEUP ARTIST WHAT YOU WANT. There is absolutely no point telling her “do what you think is best”. There are SO

many different looks and styles of makeup, how on earth is he/she supposed to know how you like to look? If you want a purple smokey eye. If you don’t like heavy coverage or strong contouring. If you only wear liquid eyeliner. Just tell him/her! Your Makeup Artist is not a mind reader, if she has no guide on what you want she won’t be able to do her job to the best of their ability.

LISTEN TO HIS/HER OPINION/ SUGGESTIONS They’re the professional after all, well I hope. If you go in with a picture of Kim Kardashian but are pale with blonde hair and blue eyes, you will not look like Kim Kardashian. If you want a really detailed cut crease eyeshadow look but have hooded eyes, your Makeup Artist should recommend a different style because detailed cut creases don’t show up on hooded eyes, but, if that’s what you want, they should do it. What I’m saying is, your Makeup Artist will be a master at their craft, they should have spent time studying face and eye shapes, they should know what works for your skin type and colouring, hair colour, eye colour and face shape. They should take into account your face and what would enhance your already beautiful features and should recommend what they think will work best. If you trust their opinion listen to them. If they turn you into a clone of every other client they have ever done, you know not to return.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a great week! This time of year a lot of people talk about being ‘bikini ready’ or ‘getting ready for holidays’ I am usually that bit more disciplined coming up to my holidays, as most people tend to be. But some people put so much focus on looking good for a holiday that it nearly takes the fun out of it. When I’m coming up to a holiday I do a few things: ensuring I get to the gym at least 5 times a week, keeping my water intake high and generally making good choices when it comes to food. I don’t go on a mad one where I do two gym sessions a day or insane cardio sessions daily. I don’t give myself a “strict diet” and only allow myself certain foods. I just make better decisions 90% of the time but there will be a dominos, donut and a night out or two in between. By doing this I don’t feel restricted or that I’m “not allowed” anything so when I get on holidays I won’t go absolutely nuts and eat all the foods I “wasn’t allowed”. You see

what I’m getting at here? When I am on holidays, I don’t give a crap! Not that “I’m going to wake up and eat Lays by the pool all day”, kind of not giving a crap. Because I know I wouldn’t want to do that and I love eating food. What I mean by not giving a crap is, I won’t be counting calories or macros, or think about what I “should” or “shouldn’t” be eating. If I want a pizza for lunch I’ll have it or if I feel like fruit for breakfast instead of pancakes I will get the fruit, whereas before I would have had the pancakes anyway because “I’m on holidays”. Basically what I’m saying is, yes I still try and be as balanced as I can because when I eat well I feel good, but if I feel like chips or chocolate I’ll eat it, and without one bit of guilt. Because yes, I am on my holidays and life is too short!

picture. You will remember how stressed you were coming up to and during your holiday that you worked hard to pay for. It’s not worth it. Once you’re healthy and happy, that’s what matters!

There is no point stressing yourself about how you look on holidays. None. You’re not going to remember how many likes you got on your Instagram bikini It’s a journey, a process. When I come back do I go on a week long detox juice cleanse? Absolutely not. I go back to what I was doing before and trust the process.

You can find me on Facebook ‘Bexblah Makeup’ or Instagram ‘Bexblah’. 22

WHAT ARE THE BEST SHOES TO BUY? A question I am often asked is “What are the best shoes to buy?” This is a very difficult question to answer as it depends on your foot size, shape and the amount of time you spend on your feet. It’s not unlike choosing tyres for your car! You wouldn’t put a set of bald tyres on your car so why would you put bad shoes on your feet.

Tip 1 – Get Measured All footwear companies have slightly different shapes and sizes, so what might fit in one shoe brand may not fit in another. Be cautious about buying shoes online. If you ask me its better to shop local anyway....

Tip 2 – Never Break Shoes In Again lets use the car analogy. You wouldn’t leave the garage with the mechanic advising you that it will be painful for the first week but after that it will be fine! So why do it with shoes – STOP breaking shoes in.

Tip 3 – Support Most people have been wearing shoes since they have been about 2 years old so our feet have become accustomed to the support and not having it can cause problems and lead to poor foot bio-mechanics e.g To quote my Nana – fallen arches. You should change “You should buy the best bed and best shoes you can your shoes often – wearing the afford – because if you’re not in one you’re in the other!!” same type of shoe your foot will grow accustomed to that support or height so if you change your shoe regularly it will make the muscles of your feet work harder and improve bio-mechanics.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! HONESTY IN GOLF

A husband and wife of 15 years are playing a round of golf together. On the 9th hole the husband turns to his wife and says “you know what I’ve had enough and I love you so I must tell you.. two years ago I got really drunk and went off with another woman. I’m so sorry but I just need to be honest with you I hope you can forgive me..” The wife said she is disappointed but she will learn to get over it and thanks him for being honest. So they continue their round. On the 18th hole the wife turns to her husband and says “well since we are being honest with each other, there is something I need to confess too.... I used to be a man but i had an operation 20 years ago” The husband was disgusted.. visibly livid...He gained some composure and shouted “What the hell ! I can’t bloody believe you.. and all this time you’ve been playing from the ladies tees!”

A BOY IN BROOKLYN IS OUTSIDE OF A CANDY SHOP SHOVELING CANDY IN HIS MOUTH. A MAN APPROACHES THE BOY AND SAYS, “DON’T EAT CANDY, KID. IT’S NOT GOOD FOR YOU.”

The boy replied, “My grandfather lived until he was 97.” “Really,” said the man. “Did he eat a lot of candy, too?” The boy replied, “No, but he minded his own bloody business.”

Mom: Time to wake up and go to school! Son: No, I don’t wanna go to school today! Mom: But you have to go to school. Son: But, I don’t wanna go to school. Mom: Give me three good reasons why you should stay home, and I will give you three reasons why you need to go to school. Son: Well, all the students hate me…and…All the teachers hate me…and… I just don’t wanna go to school. Mom: Well I have a lot to do today, and I can’t take care of you today… Two, you are over 40-years-old… And three, you are the principal.

TORQUING CARS! FORD TO UNVEIL MILD HYBRID FIESTA AND FOCUS MODELS

Ford is to show mild-hybrid versions of the Fiesta and Focus next week. The models will be unveiled at the company’s ‘Go Further’ summit in Amsterdam on Tuesday. They say the two models are part of a more comprehensive range of hybrid and electric cars, SUVs and commercials. As well as the new 48-volt mild-hybrid Fiesta and Focus versions, there will also be mild-hybrid powertrains of the Transit 2-tonne, Custom vans and Tourneo Custom eight/nine-seater - later this year. But the real game lies with full hybrids and electric vehicles and we await details of those with interest from Ford.(indo motoring )

WORLD EXPERTS ON ELECTRIC MOBILITY TO TAKE PART IN ELECTRONOMOUS SUMMIT IN KILLARNEY

A unique line-up of world experts on the future of hi-tech electric mobility will take part in the Electronomous summit in Killarney in early May. The event is designed to draw on the expertise and experience of leading people in areas where “the automotive and tech worlds converge”. The conference is described as putting a unique focus on automotive technology. It will bring together a leading, long list, of speakers, exhibitors and delegates in the fields of connected-car technology and mobility across many transport sectors. There will also be a large number of delegates with interests in, and around, the electric-tech future. That should ensure lively debate. The organisers say it’s a “real opportunity for Irish and European companies to connect with global players”.

HAPPY 6OTH MINI !

The people at MINI Ireland are looking to create a different sort of space to celebrate the 60th birthday of the iconic little Mini this year. They, and Body & Soul Music and Arts Festival, are looking for a “creative collaborator” to come up with a stage installation space just for Mini at the festival this year. There is a MINI bursary prize of €10,000 for whoever comes up with the best ‘tribute’ to the original car, which seemed to ‘magic’ room from within its tiny confines. The car, as you know, was rolled out in 1959 in part response to a global fuel shortage. Its inventor, Sir Alec Issigonis, established a secret design team office to develop a motor that would push the boundaries of what a car should be and do.Which is why the MINI Ireland people are taking the theme ‘Creative Use of Space’.Competition for the €10,000 prize is open to all.

PININFARINA BATTISTA, A 217MPH ELECTRIC HYPERCAR, IS COMING TO GOODWOOD

The Pininfarina Battista electric hypercar, said to be capable of more than 217mph, will make its UK debut during the 77th Goodwood Members’ Meeting on April 5, its first public outing since appearing at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The 1,900hp EV has been raising eyebrows since it was first announced in Rome a year ago. Pininfarina, an Italian design house best known for working with vehicle manufacturers rather than designing its own cars, will become one of the newest brands in the small but curiously popular battery-electric hypercar market. Nick Heidfeld, a former Formula 1 and Formula E racer, is Automobili Pininfarina’s lead development driver and has been “tasked with tuning the Battista’s dynamic performance”. He, along with several cars from Pininfarina’s back catalogue, will be at Goodwood for the launch. It is a privilege to return to Goodwood for the UK debut of the Pininfarina Battista,” said Heidfeld. “The Members’ Meeting is full of legendary sports cars that in many cases have become game changers. The innovative EV powertrain beneath the Battista’s carbon fibre body and monocoque provides the perfect platform on which to develop the most powerful car that will have ever been designed and built in Italy. I’m looking forward to sharing the past, present and future of Pininfarina and presenting the Battista at Goodwood in April.”

TORQUING CARS! CAR CHATTER ! CAR CHATTER ! Shortcuts with Eddie Cunningham , (Indo Motoring )

We may have noticed a slight increase in the cost of petrol and diesel for the second month in a row (AA statistics). But have you noticed how the once huge gap between petrol and diesel (I remember 11.5c/litre at one fuel station) has narrowed to a couple or three cents now? Diesel has, relatively speaking, become much more expensive. It really is getting a beating on all fronts, isn’t it? And God knows what will be done in the Budget with all this talk of carbon taxes. * Audi is reportedly going to introduce an A4-sized electric saloon - but it won’t be until 2023. It is reported that the brand will develop a saloon similarly priced to the recently announced Q4 e-tron. The saloon is expected to be built on the same electric platform as Porsche. * It is looking more and more like an all-for-one and one-for-all future as far as making cars is concerned. Take BMW as a recent example of expounding the massive re-think in approach to making cars of the future. It recently said it wants to build all variations (fossil fuel, hybrid, electric) on the same production lines. That makes lots of sense but poses problems. The plan is that a 5-series with a conventional engine, for example, would be made beside its electric sibling. The size of the challenge can only be imagined. It involves sweeping changes - from boardroom decisions to the factory floor. As Volkswagen and Mercedes (to name but two) have already told us, having a flexible system means they can react to demand. Yet therein lies the nub; what if demand for EVs is low? Or what if it’s through the roof? How do they manage to turn on and off supplies from the myriad companies who make so many components for them? Turning to EVs may present tough choices for you and I. But imagine the logistics of trying to keep so many power-variants simultaneously on the go. What a challenge for quality control for a start. Meanwhile, on the electric-car front, BMW say their upcoming EVs will allow for charging at up to 150kW. That could translate into re-charges taking just 20 minutes. Audi already have 155kW capability, while Tesla boasts 200kW with its latest supercharges. All of which suggests that if charging time is cut so drastically and travel range continues to expand there will be a fairly big rush to EVs and away from other powertrains. So the future may morph from a one-for-all scenario to only-for-one? * EasyGo.ie, which claims to be the country’s first and only privately-owned electric vehicle (EV) charging network, has installed an advanced EV charger at the Four Seasons hotel in Monaghan. The company says it plans to install 88 chargers across the country by 2020 and create up to 50 jobs in the process. * From 2024, all new cars sold here and in the EU will have to have a menu of new safety systems as standard. They will include intelligent speed limiters and monitors to detect when drivers are tired, drowsy or distracted. The legislation has been provisionally approved (by the European Commission) to improve road safety. Due to come into effect from May 2022 for models yet to be designed, the deadline is May 2024 for latest versions of cars now on the market. The measures still need formal approval of the European Parliament and member states in September.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT COLUMN THIS WEEK: This has been an interesting week in sport where we have seen the wonderful on the court and the trials and tribulations in the board room. So I am giving the Warriors most of the space as we celebrate a wonderful sporting achievement by the side that the whole town has embraced. A lot of people will know of my roles in soccer with the Schoolboys Girls League and on a number of FAI Committees including on the Women’s National Committee. Therefore some readers will be expecting me to say something on the John Delaney issue and the FAI. So I will not disappoint but I know that not everyone will agree with what I say. But that is people’s right. WARRIOR’S WINNERS ON AND OFF THE COURT: Following back to back Champions Trophy win Garvey’s Tralee Warriors are now Men’s SuperLeague champions. They completed their 20 game season by defeating UCD Marian in a double header on Saturday and Sunday. THRILLER ON THE UCD CAMPUS: The game on Saturday in the Belfield Sports Centre is one that will, over time, have been attended by many more Tralee fans that the very passionate and loud group that did attend. And what they saw will live long in the memory of both the home and away fans. The performance of Kieran Donaghy inside the last 5 minutes when the game looked up for Warriors (they were down by 12 with 4 minutes to play) was one of the best seen in years. The win was secured in overtime with 5 Tralee players on the court as the Warriors had played the game without Kendall Williams, lost Dusan Bogdanovic to injury and had the excellent Paul Dick and Keith Jumper foul out. A three from Eoin Quigley left 4 between the sides with 90 seconds to play. Donaghy was now at point guard and he drove to the basket for a score and then set up Fergal O’Sullivan who drained a three from distance that was cheered to the rafters by the travelling support. With just one point between the sides all UCD had to do was hold

onto the ball. But Donaghy was inch prefect with his steal from Meany on the half-way line – a play that will probably end up in coaching videos. The Star was fouled and he made 1 to tie the game at 80-80 and send this absorbing contest to overtime. However coach Pat Price has built this team on a Next Man Up mantra and it has certainly proved to be a winning strategy when you see how the squad fought through adversity at the business end of the season. Donaghy, Quigley and Fergal O’Sullivan scored in the early part of the extra five minutes to see the Warriors lead by 1. When Mike Garrow unusually for him didn’t handle the pressure and missed two free throws the game was on the line. And here Price showed his skills and man management as he and his coaches had the belief in Irish u16 international Rap Buivydas. He drove to the board straight off the bench and made one of two from the line. At the other end he pulled in a big defensive rebound and then from a set play, with UCD watching other players Rap was open and hit the final score to see the Warriors win by 5. TITLE WRAPPED UP IN THE COMPLEX: Those who were lucky enough to secure a ticket for Sunday’s home game knew that they could be witnessing history. The Complex was packed long before tip-off with the queue starting after 2pm for a 5pm start. And the atmosphere was raised when international musician Liam O’Connor got the place rocking pre-game. The big questions were could the Warriors come down from the high of 24 hours previous and get their bodies and minds right for the decider. And how would UCD Marian be able to get themselves back up after the heartbreak in Dublin. But UCD Marian are a proud and successful side and were always going to battle to hold onto their SuperLeague title. And they also carry the heartache of two back to back Cup final losses. The game opened at a lightening pace with both sides offences on top and at the end of the first quarter 56 point had been scored with the home side leading 32-24. Gradually in the second quarter the toil of the previous day began to catch up with UCD Marian and the Warriors had the ‘sixth man’ in the stands roaring every score. This became visible when UCD’s colourful coach Ioannis Liapakis Friday 29th March 2019

complained to the referees and the table that his side could not hear him in the time-outs due to the loud music which he felt was louder on his side of the hall!! When things are not going your way it does feel everyone is against you! The home side were hitting scores from all over the court and from most of the squad and by the end of the half had a 20 point lead 55-35. While the game did not reach the highs of the night before the second half was more of a countdown to the title presentation. The sides matched scores in the third quarter and it was 71-51 with 10 minutes to play. Credit to UCD Marian they kept going and at one stage hit 9 unanswered points but this only cut the gap to 14. Jumper hit two big scores and then capping off a weekend he won’t forget Rap hit two from two from the line to wrap up the scoring, the win and the SuperLeague title. REACTION FROM THOSE INVOLVED: Coach Pat Price was emotional and delighted saying that “If you don’t dream it it won’t happen. I am delighted for the squad as they have earned it and that is how it should happen – you should earn it. UCD were great champions and they were never going to roll over. But I am just so happy and proud of the lads”. Kieran Donaghy said that the game in Dublin was the winning of the title. “We finished with five Tralee lads on the floor but we got the job done in overtime. We knew we had a sixth man with the home crowd. This is what we wanted when we started this. We wanted something the whole towm could get behind and it’s been a long road, a tough journey of ups and downs but we got there.” Darren O’Sullivan said that this was everything to the team. “This is for the squad, the coaches, the club and the fans. You see how many kids are here. This is everything for the town and everything for the development of the next generation”. Basketball Ireland Secretary General Bernard O’Byrne was a happy man in Tralee on Sunday. “We are enjoying great days in the sport at the moment. The standards of the Irish players have never been higher. And the clubs are working hard to create a match-day experience and the Warriors are at the forefront of this. To see crowds queuing in town for tickets in the week of a game is wonderful for the sport”. BUT THE WARRIORS ARE MUCH MORE THAN JUST THE TEAM: When people like Terry O’Brien, Kieran Donaghy and Jimmy Diggins put the plans in place to bring SuperLeague basketball back they would have dreamed of success. But even they would probably not have expected two Champions Trophy wins, under Mark Bernsen, and now a SuperLeague trophy win led by Pat Price. But the Warriors have shown what can be done when the right

people come together and work out a plan and goals. They got a very good sponsor in Garvey’s on board, brought in top coaches and recruited some very good players which they blended with the top class local talent that they knew was in the town. Their vision was of building a club that the whole town could be proud off. And each week a committee of eleven meet to discuss the week ahead. But eleven will never run what the Warriors have created and they can call on over 40 volunteers at each home game. These are the back-bone of the club doing all the important things behind the scenes that are needed to run a team at the top level of a sport. And they do it in friendly and professional manner – and this season that have had to deal will full house after full house. On the playing side the Warriors made a very important decision to bring in Pat Price and John Dowling early as this allowed the coaches and the squad to all buy into the same vision. On match days they create a buzz from MC Alan Cantwell to the piper playing the Anthem to bringing in the likes of the Wheelblasters, young teams at half time and entertainers to buildup the pre match experience. It’s the combination of all this that has Garvey’s Tralee Warriors are the top team in the country and everyone involved deserved all the celebrations they had this week and will have going forward including a Civic Reception. NEXT UP: While we are awaiting confirmation at the time of going to print it seems that the Warriors will be in action again this Sunday. The plan is that they will welcome the winners of UCD Marian and Belfast Star in the second round of the Champions Trophy – which the Warriors are aiming to win for the third time in three years. This competition is for the top 6 teams in the SuperLeague and while is does have an end of season feel it will be none the less competitive once the ball is thrown-up. HOPEFULLY JOHN DELANEY WILL NOT BE LOST TO THE GRASSROOTS: More than any other sport soccer, especially at international level, is something that everyone has an opinion on. And following on they have an opinion on the FAI and with John Delaney being the most high profile face of the organisation they have an opinion on him. So is John Delaney a saint – no, has he done some things that he might do differently – yes. But then I don’t think that there are many readers of this column who are saints nor is the writer!! And I would suggest everyone has done some things they would do differently. But what has to be said is that soccer in this country would not be the success it is without the work that John Delaney has done over more than a decade. Huge numbers

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER of grass roots clubs in the country now have facilities to be proud of and this comes from John Delaney fighting for the grass roots at the top level of the game. For far too long everything was Dublin based with the capitals clubs banking the lion’s share of any monies that was available. But with John coming from a country base he changed this. And nowhere is this more visible than at Mounthawk Park and indeed in the county in general. Yes the work in the KDL and the clubs is done by volunteers but to have the backing of the sports CEO certainly made the developments of the facilities much easier. There are very few Leagues that can claim two side by side All Weather pitches. Indeed last week Bray Wanderers had to switch their game to Mounthawk Park as they could not find a playable pitch in their area. Add to this it was John’s idea to move the AGM around the country. This has now become a Festival of Football and Kerry was the first county outside of Dublin to host this great week of soccer related activities. And what people often forget when attacking the FAI is that the FAI is made up of many hard working staff including our own RDO Darren Aherne as well as the thousands of volunteers. And on the moaning we hear about the League of Ireland let’s remember that when John Delaney brought the League under the auspices of the FAI it was nearly broke with clubs spending way beyond their means. And now as well as the senior teams we have 24 in the underage League of Ireland including our four in Kerry. It is up to all League of Ireland clubs to become selfsufficient and yes there probably should be greater prize money but clubs must also do more to increase their attendances. Add to this the changes in the Women’s game including the forming of 8 Regions to develop the game which came from John’s vision and you will see that the FAI and soccer is a much much better place since John Delaney took over. What I hope, and I know John Regan shares this view, is that he is not lost to grass roots side of the game when he takes over his Executive Vice President duties. As I said at the start are there things he would probably have done differently but before people jump on this anti John Delaney bandwagon they should know all the facts. And yes his is very well paid for his work but from my point of view the hours and the miles he puts in and the results he gets in the development of the game are what counts. KERRY’S BIG DAY-OUT IN CROKE PARK A JUST REWARD FOR EARLY SEASON HARD WORK: The bookies rarely get it wrong and they have Kerry as favourites to lift the League trophy this Sunday in Croke Park. Kerry

completed the group phase of the League with a 10 point win over Roscommon who were fighting, unsuccessfully, to avoid relegation. This has the Kingdom at 4/11 to claim their second League win in three years. While it has looked for a while that Kerry would reach the League final who they would be facing came down to the last week. Dublin were early favourites but have had a poor League and only time will tell if this is a blip or if it is more serious. Mayo hit the net three times as they defeated Monaghan to book their trip to headquarters. And with the Westerners having defeat Kerry in Tralee there is a little bit of extra spice to this game. Of course that game in Tralee was in the tight environs of Austin Stack Park in very poor weather. The League final will be on the wide open spaces of Croke Park which should suit this Kerry side. They will certainly need to do a better job on Aidan O’Shea who dominated in Tralee and I am sure Peter Keane will plan for this. While this is a young Kerry squad many of the new players have tasted All Ireland success at minor level in Croke Park so will not be overawed. The management of both sides will be looking to win the game but will also be very happy to have this extra game. With both of these set to make the Top 8 without two much trouble their paths could cross again during the summer. But for this Sunday it’s all about becoming League champions and we all believe Peter Keane and this new Kerry incarnation can go all the way. GAA SHORTS – JUST THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM EACH CLUB THIS WEEK: PARNELLS NEWS:
