Mr Owen owns a GAA sports memorabilia shop, and one of his bestsellers was a signed poster of the talented football striker nicknamed ‘The Don’, the Dons wife visited the shop and told customers that the signed posters were fake, the statement was picked up by the media and published in the newspaper and on the radio, Mr Owen believes this has damaged his business and reputation and wonders what he can do about it.

Mr Owen can Sue the Dons wife for defamation if he can prove 4 elements: The statement was published, it was a lie, it was damaging to his reputation and it was about him. From the face of it his claim satisfies the first element as it was published on the radio and newspaper.

If The Don has signed the posters personally the statement made by wife is a lie. The statement undoubtedly would

damage his reputation as it would initiate, he has been deceiving customers and it was a statement about him.

In the famous case of McManus V Beckham, Victoria Beckham was in a sports memorabilia store and told customers that the autographed posters of her husband were fake, the case was settled with Mrs Beckham paying damages of £55,000, legal fees of £100,000 and the donation of various items of David’s to the shop.

If Mr Owen has a successful defamation claim, he can also apply to the courts to have a corrective order where the court will order the defendant to publish a correction of the defamatory statement

‘Into the Deep’ at Oceanworld Dingle ...its a Gamechanger!

Irish company Algorithm has created an immersive experience, “Deep Atlantic,” exploring Ireland’s marine life. The original piece was commissioned by Oceanworld Dingle to highlight the importance of marine conservation in Irish waters and will premiere at the Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium as part of the Dingle Animation Festival.

The experience follows the journey of a humpback whale as it travels through the depths of the Atlantic waters at the Porcupine Ridge off the coast of Kerry and into the abyss. Visitors will be able to see humpback whales, moonfish, leatherback turtles, sea gooseberries and the amazing bioluminescence of the deep seas.

The experience is projected 360 degrees around the visitor, and they are able to direct a shoal of mackerel on screen using Algorithm’s Orbit technology.

The experience will be available to the public in April.’Into the Deep’ has been a €500,000 investment for Oceanworld and is the only fully

immersive seawater experience both in Ireland and the UK .

Algorithm is an immersive production studio based in Dublin, founded in 2015, and has designed and fabricated awardwinning immersive experiences for international art festivals, music concerts, animations and films. Their mission is to close the gap between the real world and virtual realities.

Algorithm has deployed its brand new, patent-pending technology, called “Orbit,” to create stunning visual content that moves freely across wraparound screens on all the surfaces of an auditorium to fully surround and immerse the visitor. Immersive experiences are the future, and Algorithm is preparing for a further round of funding to establish bases in the UAE, the West Coast of the US, and Europe in order to maximize Orbit’s potential. Dingle Oceanworld was founded in 1996 and is Ireland’s largest aquarium.

Register now for the 11th Annual County Clean up

The 11th annual County Clean Up will take place across the county on Saturday, 15th April and a call is going out to all community and voluntary organisations and individuals to get involved.

The County Clean-Up takes place with the support of KWD Recycling and Kerry County Council. Over the past decade, hundreds of tonnes of rubbish have been collected along Kerry roads by thousands of volunteers.

The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Francis Flynn urged everyone to participate in what is now one of the annual community initiatives in Kerry. ‘The tremendous effort of volunteers over the past decade has contributed to the campaign to keep the county litter-free. The County Clean Up greatly complements the work which Kerry County Council does all year round to promote environmental awareness and maintain our

wonderful landscape. ‘Registration is now open at www. countycleanup.com and I hope that local communities will participate in large numbers,’ he said.

Noel O’Reilly from KWD said: ‘KWD Recycling is proud to be involved in the County Clean Up which is now in its 11th year. It is a very important day that has made a huge difference on the roads of Kerry and west Cork.’

Environmental Awareness Officer at Kerry County Council, Breda Moriarty said: ‘The amazing and diligent work of many community groups and individuals for the County Clean Up is admirable. Everyone coming together to keep Kerry clean and our roads litter free for an 11th year is fantastic.’

Groups must register to ensure they receive a clean-up pack and to nominate a collection point for any litter collected.

Ardfert Cathedral, just one of many heritage sites reopening for summer ‘23

As the season opens in Kerry, visitors and locals are invited to explore the 70 historical and heritage sites held in trust for the nation by the OPW. Among these sites are Ardfert Cathedral, an impressive twelfthcentury medieval Cathedral perfect for architecture enthusiasts, and Derrynane House, the ancestral home of Daniel O’Connell, a giant of Irish politics.

Adrian Corcoran, the Supervisor Guide with the OPW in Kerry, expressed his excitement about the reopening of Derrynane House and Ardfert Cathedral. He noted that the cathedral would remain open longer into the season than usual, and highlighted the recent upgrade of the Blasket Centre as an authentic retelling of the story of the Blasket islands, their heritage, and unique

literature.

Minister for the OPW Patrick O’Donovan T.D. welcomed the reopening of Ireland’s tourism attractions and the contribution they make to the local sense of place, economy, and family entertainment. He emphasized the state’s investment in safeguarding national landmarks and preserving Ireland’s heritage portfolio.

On the first Wednesday of every month, visitors and families can enjoy free admission to Ardfert Cathedral and Derrynane House.

The OPW Heritage Card offers unlimited access to over 45 historic sites and visitor attractions for a year, providing great value for those interested in learning about Ireland’s cultural heritage.

Kerry Rose to present winning drivers awards at Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally

The upcoming 44th edition of the Kerry Motor Club’s Circuit of Kerry Rally is set to take place this weekend in Tralee, and will see over 150 drivers from various parts of Ireland, Britain, and even Australia compete in the nine-stage event. As a round of three significant championships, the event carries great importance, including the Triton Showers National, the Top Part West Coast, and the Moriarty’s Central Car Sales Kingdom of Kerry. The rally is also expected to provide a significant economic boost to Tralee, with local businesses expecting to benefit greatly from the large influx of visitors attending the event.

The winning drivers will receive their prizes in a ceremony at the

Rose Hotel, where they will be greeted by the 2022 Kerry Rose, Édaein O’Connell, who will present them with their laurels. O’Connell expressed her excitement at being a part of the event, noting that rallies such as this one are not just enjoyable, but also vital for the community at large. The Circuit of Kerry Rally will begin on Friday night with an overseas competitor reception, followed by a static display of rally cars in Tralee Town center on Saturday afternoon . Teddy Bear Hospital Event at MTU

MTU and RCSI, along with charity partner BUMBLEance, are organizing a Teddy Bear Hospital event at the North Campus in Tralee on Saturday, April 22, which aims to help children feel more comfortable when interacting with healthcare professionals. Over 150 children are expected to attend the free event, which is divided into two sessions, from 10 am to 12 noon and from 2 pm to 4 pm. Children will bring their teddy bears and other stuffed toys with them to the event, where they will learn more about what doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals do as part of their jobs. They will also witness the whole process of being in a hospital from start to finish, with the help of the cuddly teddy bears. MTU and RCSI medical, healthcare, and science students and staff will demonstrate to the children

The Run for The Rock is Back!

The Paul Lucey Run for the Rock is back again for 2023 and will take place on the May Bank holiday weekend, Monday 1st May 2023. This is the fifth year of the run which has grown in strength and popularity from year to year.

The run and walk honours the memory of Paul Lucey, a proud Austin Stacks man who passed away in December 2017 and is a community celebration of family and fitness.

Paul was a member of the famous Stacks All Ireland Club Championship winning team of ’77. He trained many underage and senior teams down through the years, notably bringing the 1986 and 1994 senior winning teams to county success. , He was also involved with the Austin Stacks ladies football team in later years. This year the run will be followed by a Family Fun day for adults and children of the club and wider community.

These community runs events are

all the more important now as the Covid 19 pandemic has taught us the importance of freedom, exercise and friendship which over the past few years had been restricted. We are hoping to encourage as many kids, teenagers, parents, grandparents, friends and family members to get outdoors on Monday 1st May to run or walk 5km promoting health and positivity within the club and community and mark the start of summer.

The event will begin at the entrance to the Austin Stacks’ Clubhouse at Connolly Park at 11am and taking in the traditional enjoyable route up Caherslee and down the Skinny Mile section of the Greenway.

MTU Hosts Active Ageing Festival at Kerry Sports Academy

Munster Technological University, in partnership with the Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership (KRSP), recently held an ‘Active Ageing Festival’ at the Kerry Sports Academy on March 22, 2023. The interest and eagerness of the Kerry community to learn about active ageing was evident with the early demand for registration. The event was attended by 150 people who engaged in a busy schedule of activities facilitated by the Department of Health and Leisure Studies’ students and staff.

Dr. Barry Moynihan, a Consultant Geriatrician in the University Hospital Kerry, opened the festival with an informative talk on the importance of movement as we age. Many community organizations and networks participated in the event, including the HSE, Baile Mhuire, Kerry Library, Kerry Call, SeanChairde, Centre of Smart Ageing, Probus, and Age

and Opportunity. The activities showcased at the festival included Pickleball, Bowls, Better Balance Better Bones, Dance, and Yoga. KRSP’s coordinator Gearoid O Doherty emphasized the need for more community-based activities for older adults across Kerry and KRSP’s role in supporting this development. MTU lecturer and event coordinator Eimear Foley spoke about the mutual benefits of the event for both participants and students, stating that it provided the students with a real-life experience in planning, delivering, and evaluating the festival.

The concept of being active across the lifespan is embedded in the students’ course, and this opportunity for them to engage in real-life learning is paramount. The festival attendees commented on the professionalism, warmth, and enthusiasm of the students, while the students were delighted with the

Kate and Claire Crowley, Mounthawk, 3rd Year Primary School, Student Teachers in Mary Immaculate College , are travelling to teach in Uganda, Africa in June 2023. Youngest daughters of Susan Quirke-Crowley & John Crowley , Mounthawk Montessori School & Busy Bees Nursery, must raise €2500 each as part of this volunteer programme, added Claire. . ‘As part of our 3rd Year college teaching placement, We will be volunteering as teachers in Africa, for three weeks to help children in Uganda,’ said Kate . ‘To raise funds, we are hosting an Easter Camp for Primary School Children at Mounthawk Montessori from April 3rd to April 6th , 8.30 to

1.30. The fee per child is €95 for the week. The Easter Outdoor Creative Craft & Drama Camp is suitable for children over 5 years old , with lots of fun and games guaranteed. All money raised will be given to Nurture Africa, the organisation which we will be travelling with, said the girls. This will go towards the schools and the locality in Uganda. Come experience ‘RallyTown’ in Tralee this Saturday!

Kerry Motor Club are also hosting a ‘Rally Town’ event, in conjunction with the Tralee Chamber Alliance,

This will include a static display of rally cars in the Mall area of the town. This year’s RallyTown event is kindly sponsored by ‘Tralee Quickfit Nice Price Tyres’ on Rock Street, which was recently acquired by John, Sandy and Lauren Corrigan.

As rally competitors themselves, they understand the huge role the 100s of volunteer marshals play in the rally.

As a result, they will give a €10 voucher, which can be offset against a new set of tyres to all marshals who sign on for the rally.

“This kind of generosity is unknown in rally terms,” said deputy clerk of the course Sean Moriarty at the launch.

“As rally competitors themselves, they know the importance our marshals play in rallying and to repay the marshals in this way is unprecedented. RallyTown will run from 12noon until 6 pm in The Mall, Tralee, on April 1, thanks to support from Kerry County Council and Tralee Chamber Alliance.
