‘Cúpla focal’ as Tralee embraced the magic of st. Patrick’s day
Thousands of spectators gathered to enjoy the Capital’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Kerry, which was mostly dry throughout the day. The parade celebrated the Irish language with the theme of “Cúpla Focal,” led by Community Garda Mary Gardiner as the Grand Marshal. The event was a showcase of Tralee’s community spirit, with a range of businesses, clubs, volunteer groups, and bands taking part in the parade, featuring creative floats, vibrant marching bands, dancers, traditional Irish music, and street theatre spectacles from Artastic, a renowned street
theatre company from Kildare.
The St. Patrick’s Day committee collaborated with Tralee Chamber Alliance and Kerry County Council, and parade directors Oliver Hurley and Ken Murphy were thrilled with the success of the event. Colette O’Connor, Tralee Chamber CEO, noted the sense of community that made Tralee shine on days like this. This year’s parade proved to be a visual feast for all attendees and showcased the best of Irish culture and community spirit.

KPFA Celebrate 50 YEARS!
Kerry Parents and Friends Association celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. We are marking this significant milestone; by having a number of events throughout the county to celebrate. Mount Eagle Lodge was the first service to be opened within Kerry Parents and Friends, giving Tralee special significance within the organisation. Some of the original residents still live there after many happy years with the organisation. Tralee Services continued to grow, from Mount Eagle Lodge Day Service to The three residential houses, Mount Eagle Lodge, Tamhnach Lodge and Leeside. The first event to be celebrated will be hosted in the newly developed Tralee Service; the Tralee Hub, Fabrik Building, Godfrey Place, Tralee on Saturday March 25th to mark its official opening.
Tralee Hub is situated in the heart of Tralee town next to a number of
local community amenities. The service provides active person centred supports to young adults with disabilities. We strive to partner with the people we support, along with their families and allies to develop, identify, and sustain
meaningful valued roles within their lives and communities. We aim to empower people with the necessary skills to maximise their level of independence, to contribute in their local communities and live ordinary lives filled with real life experiences.

Kerry FC fall just short of a share of the points on a tough St Patrick’s Night in Wexford
Kerry FC came close to securing their first win of the new season but fell short against Wexford FC on a wet and windy St Patrick’s night in Ferrycarrig Park. Wexford got off to a strong start, with Mark Hanratty scoring in just three minutes. However, Kerry responded well to going down early on and had shots from Leo Gaxha and Nathan Gleeson, forcing Wexford goalkeeper Noel Heffernan into action. Wexford had chances too, and Kerry goalkeeper Wayne Guthrie was forced into making some big saves in the first half. In the second half, Kerry started brighter and appealed for a penalty that
was not given, while Wexford took advantage of a short corner to score their second goal in the 78th minute through Brendan McCann. However, Kerry kept pushing and were rewarded when Gaxha scored with a glancing header in the 87th minute. Despite Kerry’s late pressure, they were unable to find an equalizer. The performance was a significant improvement on their previous game away to Galway United, providing encouragement for manager Billy Dennehy. Kerry’s starting XI included Guthrie, Williams, Quaid, Hannafin, Aladesanusi, Keane, O’Reilly, Kennedy, Gaxha, and Gleeson.

€250,000 to regenerate Castleisland’s main street
Minister for Education and Kerry T.D Norma Foley welcomes this weeks Government announcement of €250,000 in funding for Castleisland under the 2023 Historic Towns Initiative (HTI). The HTI seeks proposals that encourage the specific re-use of historic buildings with works on this year’s projects to be completed before the end of the year.
Welcoming this funding, Minister Foley said, “It is so
important to support our communities in their efforts to repair, preserve and restore our built heritage.
“I was delighted to receive confirmation that this funding will support the community-led regeneration of Castleisland’s main street, underpin urban revitalisation and promote conservationled improvements to historic fabric in a number of buildings to ensure occupancy and address vacancy.
“It further underlines this Government’s continuing commitment to protect and preserve our built environment and create town centres that function as viable, vibrant and attractive locations for people to live, work and visit.’’
Minister Foley concluded by saying that she was looking forward to seeing the completed works and the economic benefits it will bring to the town.

Rosebud Lilly Lights Up Big Apple Parade!
Lilly O Donnell who was the Rosebud to the 2022 New York Rose , was invited to march in the New York St Patricks Day Parade last week . Lilly is a second class pupil of Gaelscoil Mhic Easminn in Tralee and heres her account of the fantastic event “Walking down 5th Avenue for the St. Patricks Day Parade as the New York Rosebud was magical, all the crowds, the music, the atmosphere was amazing. I met a lot of Irish people on St. Patricks day as they all gathered to celebrate. After the parade I did an interview with Mid West Radio from Mayo.While in New York I got to see some of the sights, like the Statute of Liberty, Times Square, Central Park, the Ice Cream Museum, the American Girl Doll Shop and we also went ice skating. Memories were made which I will never forget.I travelled to New York with my mum and my sisters Laura & Emily. Thank you to my dad who made this all possible. I have really enjoyed my time as a Rose Bud. “

Primary school children, says Norma
The Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD, has announced a pioneering scheme that offers free schoolbooks, workbooks, and copybooks to primary schools and special schools. The scheme is estimated to benefit over 558,000 pupils enrolled in around 3,230 primary schools, including over 130 special schools. It aims to alleviate the financial strain on families during back-to-school time and is part of the Programme for Government to extend the free school book pilot, currently in over 100 primary schools in the DEIS program.
The initiative represents a significant increase in funding for school books, with over €50 million invested in the scheme. This funding also includes an Administration Support Grant for schools, which aims to assist with implementing the scheme and relieve the administrative burden on schools. The Department of Education will provide schools with guidance, and any school with queries can contact them directly.
Parents and guardians will not be required to buy or rent any schoolbooks, workbooks, or copybooks from autumn 2023 onwards. The schoolbooks provided under this scheme are the property of the school and must be returned at the end of the school year.
Minister Foley commented that this groundbreaking, permanent measure is essential to ensuring that every child has the resources required to access education and to ease the financial burdens of back-to-school costs. The scheme will enhance the educational experience of primary school children, not just in the classroom, but also in the family home.

Club stalwart Johnno Connor has taken over the senior management team with a clear vision of the type of football he wants played, supported by Maurice Horan, Oliver Molloy, Daniel Breen, and Frank O’Connor. Despite an opening point from Tommy Walsh, the team played second fiddle to Castleisland Desmonds who dominated the first half of their match to go in at halftime 2-06 to 0-04 ahead. The second half saw the team dominate with some great runs from deep by Ross and Ben Hanafin but failed to find the elusive goal they craved until Conor Hayes found the corner of the net. The final score was 2-10 to 2-12 in favor of Desmonds. The club is down a significant number of players but hopes the younger members will bed in soon. The team will face Ballymac in the 2nd round on the first weekend in April. In Division 6, they lost out on a final scoreline of 3-12 to 1-08 against the locals C team. The club’s annual masters golf challenge will take place from 6-9th April, and all funds will be reinvested in club activities. In juvenile notes, the weather led to the cancellation of U5 and U6 training, but all other age groups braved the wet conditions. The U11 Boys will be playing in the Town league against John Mitchel’s at home, and U13 KOR Boys’ training continues in The MTU Astroturf. The club would like to thank their main sponsor Ballyseedy Home and Garden Centre for their continued support and reminds members to pay their membership through clubzap. The minors played their last game of the county league and will compete in the Central League in a few weeks, expecting to be more competitive.

No new date has been fixed as we write. The Co. League got underway last weekend but our home game against Spa was deferred. It will now go ahead on next Saturday, 25th March at 4pm.

Both teams lost against Treaty in UL Limerick U17 team took the lead in the 32nd minute but lost in injury time U19 team scored in the 24th minute but conceded 2 injury time goals
