Tralee Good Friday Pageant Returns to St John’s
Tralee’s much-loved Good Friday Pageant will return to the Parish Church of St John the Baptist on Castle Street at 3pm on Friday, April 3rd. The moving performance forms part of the traditional Good Friday ceremony, commemorating the Passion, Crucifixion and Death of Jesus Christ.
Presented by the Parish Liturgy Drama Group, the pageant is performed in mime, with narrators guiding the audience through events following the Last Supper. Scenes include the arrest, trial, scourging and crucifixion of Christ. The production captures the emotional intensity of the story, from the crowd’s calls to free Barabbas to the quiet grief of Mary and the small group of faithful
followers.
Now in its 24th year, the pageant continues to draw large attendances, offering both a reflective and deeply moving experience. Many regard it as a powerful expression of faith that resonates just as strongly today. Almost 50 local participants, aged from 8 to 80, have spent the past two months preparing for the performance. The group includes primary and secondary students, retirees and working members of the community. Costumes are coordinated by Rose O’Sullivan and her team, while the St John’s Church Choir, directed by Michael O’Shea, will provide a fitting musical backdrop. Those attending are advised to

Q&A: Understanding Acne
Q: What is acne?
A: Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and sometimes bacteria. It often appears as pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, or cysts, typically on the face, chest, back, and shoulders.
Q: What causes acne?
A: Acne is mainly driven by excess oil (sebum) production, clogged pores, bacteria, and in ammation. Hormonal changes—especially during puberty, menstruation, or stress—can increase oil production and trigger breakouts..
Q: Who gets acne?
A: While acne is most common among teenagers, it can a ect people of all ages. Adult acne, particularly in women, is increasingly common and may be linked to hormonal uctuations, lifestyle factors, or skincare habits.
Q: How can acne be treated?
A: Treatment depends on severity. Mild acne can often be managed with over-the-counter products containing ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. More persistent or severe cases may require prescription medications, including topical creams, antibiotics, or retinoids. In some cases, lifestyle adjustments—such as a balanced diet, stress management, and proper skincare—can help improve symptoms.
Q: Can acne be prevented?
A: While not all acne can be prevented, good skincare habits can reduce breakouts. This includes gently cleansing the skin twice daily, avoiding harsh scrubbing, using non-comedogenic products, and not picking at pimples, which can worsen in ammation and lead to scarring.
Q: When should you see a doctor?
A: If acne is severe, painful, or causing emotional distress, it’s important to seek medical advice. Early treatment can help prevent long-term scarring and improve overall skin health.
If you have troublesome acne Dr Pieter can o er you an extensive range of treatment options including topical and systemic treatment as well as oral Isotretinoin, so do make contact with the surgery.

The Cost of Waiting – Why Pension Planning Should Start Today
Alan O’Shea has officially taken over the reins of the family-run O’Shea Insurance from his father and founder, Gerry O’Shea, marking a new chapter for the well-established Tralee business.
Holding both Qualified Financial Adviser (QFA) and Certified Insurance Practitioner (CIP) designations, Alan brings over 15 years of experience in the insurance and financial services sector. As he steps into his new role, he is encouraging people across Kerry to think seriously about one of the most overlooked financial priorities — pension planning.
“For many, pensions are something we’ll deal with later,” Alan explains.
“But delaying can be one of the most costly financial decisions you make.”
The key advantage of starting early lies in compound growth. Even modest, consistent contributions can build significantly over time, boosted by tax relief and long-term investment returns. Beginning just ten years earlier can have a major impact on the size of your retirement fund.
Pensions remain one of the most tax-efficient ways to save, offering benefits such as tax relief on contributions, tax-efficient growth, and, in many cases, employer contributions. They also provide a structured, long-term approach to financial planning.
Alan also highlights a common issue — fragmented pensions. Many people accumulate multiple pension pots from different jobs, often left
unreviewed. Consolidating these, where appropriate, can simplify management and provide a clearer picture of future retirement income.
With people living longer and uncertainty around the State Pension, relying solely on government support may not be enough. Early planning reduces pressure later and offers greater flexibility.

Cliodhna Doherty Unveils New Solo Exhibition “Home Body” at Siamsa Tíre, Tralee
Tralee, Ireland, 25th March 2026
— Irish artist Cliodhna Doherty presents her latest solo exhibition, Home Body, opening at Siamsa Tíre, Tralee, on Tuesday, 24 March 2026 at 6pm. The exhibition will run from 24th March to 22nd April 2026. Home Body is a deeply personal collection that explores the relationship between grief, the body, and the process of returning to oneself. Rooted in life-drawing studies, the work moves beyond direct representation, instead capturing the emotional weight, movement, and presence of the female form. Through looser markmaking and an earthy, grounded palette, each piece reflects a profound internal connection shaped by memory, vulnerability, and recovery.
“This collection is deeply personal and explores the return to self after grief,” says Doherty. “For years I
Kerry
have painted other women and their stories, so this collection is extremely special and vulnerable to me.”
The exhibition marks a significant shift in Doherty’s practice. While earlier work focused on observing the intimate lives and emotional landscapes of other women, Home Body turns inward. The paintings examine the artist’s own relationship with her body and how grief reshapes identity and selfperception. Here, the body becomes both subject and container — a space where memory, emotion, and lived experience reside.
Through quiet compositions and restrained gestures, the collection invites viewers to pause and reflect. Positioned between figure and feeling, the works offer a contemplative space for emotional clarity and connection, encouraging audiences to consider the body not simply as form, but as a site of
presence, reflection, and return. Angela Ryan Whyte, CEO Siamsa Tíre comments, “This exhibition speaks softly yet powerfully, inviting us to sit with ourselves, to question our inner narratives, and to rediscover the body as a place of care, memory and survival. It is a privilege to host Cliodhna Doherty’s Home Body exhibition at Siamsa Tíre, a body of work that speaks with honesty, vulnerability and grace. We encourage everyone to come and linger, to experience it for themselves.”
About the Artist
Cliodhna Doherty is an Irish painter whose work explores the human experience through themes of presence, emotional truth, and the body. Working primarily in figurative painting, her practice captures moments of stillness, intimacy, and vulnerability. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including
presentations during the Venice Biennale, the Cannes Film Festival, and the Art Shopping event at the Louvre during Art Basel. Her recent work reflects a more introspective direction, examining personal experiences of grief and the evolving relationship between self and body.
Comhairle na nÓg Raise Key Youth Issues with MEP Billy Kelleher
Members of Kerry Comhairle na nÓg, the county’s Youth Council, met with Ireland South MEP Billy Kelleher in Killarney on March 13 for a wide-ranging discussion on issues affecting young people.
The Cork native engaged with members on local, national and international topics, with a strong focus on this year’s youth council theme — the lack of facilities and activities for young people in Kerry. Mr Kelleher suggested that unused spaces in schools could be opened up outside school hours to provide much-needed community areas for youth groups.
Housing was another key concern raised, with members highlighting the challenges young people face in trying to build a future in Kerry.
Mr Kelleher acknowledged the issue, pointing to planning delays and excessive red tape as barriers to increasing housing supply, and stressed that young people should have a fair opportunity to afford a home.
International affairs were also discussed, including the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran. Mr Kelleher reflected on visiting Kyiv in recent years and spoke about how global relations have shifted significantly since his time as Minister of State for Trade and Commerce, when he travelled to Russia on a State visit.
Members also learned about Ireland’s upcoming EU Presidency, with Mr Kelleher explaining that the role is now largely administrative

Cara Credit Union and Career Ahead Empower Students for the Next Chapter
Cara Credit Union and Career Ahead have once again teamed up to help Leaving Certificate students confidently take their next step, whether that’s progressing to thirdlevel education, further education colleges, or apprenticeships. While this stage of life is filled with excitement, it can also feel overwhelming for many young people. Recognising this, Cara Credit Union has partnered with Career Ahead founder Mary Lucey to deliver practical guidance through the popular “How to Rock Your College Experience” programme. The initiative is currently being rolled out to sixth-year students across Cara Credit Union’s common bond areas, including Tralee, Castleisland,
Killorglin, Ballyduff, Causeway and Corca Dhuibhne. This year’s programme began with an in-person session at Causeway Comprehensive School and addresses key topics such as moving away from home, adapting to new living arrangements, managing academic challenges, and handling finances. It also offers advice for students who may find themselves on the wrong course and need to reassess their options.
Mary Lucey highlighted the importance of early preparation, noting that many first-year students and apprentices can struggle with the transition, sometimes leading to dropouts and unnecessary stress. She said the programme is designed to equip students with the tools and

confidence needed for a smoother and more successful journey.
Philip Lynch, Marketing Officer with Cara Credit Union, said the organisation is proud to continue the initiative for a fifth consecutive year. He emphasised the importance of supporting young members, not only through education but also by helping them understand budgeting and financial management.
Cara Credit Union also offers tailored financial supports, including low-rate student loans with no early repayment fees, free loan protection,
and student-friendly current accounts with global access. Mr Lynch added that the strong uptake of the programme reflects its value, and he thanked local schools for their continued support.

Minister Foley Presents Kerry Gift to Pope Leo During St Patrick’s Day Visit
Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry TD Norma Foley marked St Patrick’s Day with a special visit to the Vatican, where she presented Pope Leo with a unique gift from Kerry. The Minister said it was a great honour to share a piece of her home county on such a significant occasion.
Minister Foley became the first Irish Government minister to meet Pope Leo, who was elected last May following the passing of Pope Francis. During the meeting at St Peter’s Square, she presented His Holiness with a handcrafted Dingle Crystal bowl, designed in the shape of a traditional Naomhóg, along with a Ballinskelligs shamrock.
Speaking afterwards, Minister Foley said the piece symbolised the rich maritime heritage of Kerry and the enduring spirit of the Irish people, drawing inspiration from the legendary voyages of St Brendan, the county’s patron saint.
Pope Leo expressed his gratitude for the thoughtful gift and shared his own familiarity with Irish traditions, recalling St Patrick’s Day celebrations in his home city of Chicago, where the river is famously turned green. During her visit to Italy, Minister Foley also met with Italian Minister for Disability Alessandra Locatelli to discuss shared priorities and presented her with a piece of Dingle Crystal. She held further engagements at the Vatican, including a meeting with Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Holy See’s Foreign Minister.
The Minister visited Campo Santo Teutonico, associated with Kerry priest Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, and met Irish staff at the Food and Agricultural Organisation. Her trip also included a visit to the Pontifical Irish College and cultural engagements with schoolchildren and community groups in Rome.

Sunshine and Strong Turnout
The 12th annual Fenit Coastal Cycle took place on Saturday, 21st March, under glorious sunshine, creating a fantastic atmosphere for all involved. More than 250 cyclists participated, enjoying ideal conditions and the stunning scenery along the routes. The 60km cycle offered a scenic challenge around Kerry Head, while the 25km option catered to a range of abilities, with participants
choosing either the traditional route via Ardfert, Barrow and Churchill or a more leisurely spin along the Greenway. Younger cyclists were also well represented, with many pupils from Fenit National School taking part in the 10km Greenway route, and a 1km scoot and cycle providing great fun for the youngest participants.
Cyclists were warmly welcomed
back to the school where entertainment by Big Jim added to the lively community spirit. A highlight of the day, as always, was the impressive spread of refreshments, including freshly made sandwiches, home baking and plenty of tea.
The organising committee extended sincere thanks to sponsors, volunteers, marshals, An Garda
Síochána, the Red Cross, stewards and all support teams who ensured the event ran smoothly and safely. Congratulations to all participants, and especially to raffle winner James O’Connor, who won a €1,000 voucher for O’Sullivan Cycles. Successful Showjumping Tour Raises Funds for Down Syndrome Kerry
A special cheque presentation ceremony marked the success of the Down Syndrome Showjumping Charity Tour of Munster, following a series of hugely well-supported events held across the region. The Kerry leg of the tour took place at Holmoak Stables in Tralee, where riders, families and supporters gathered in great numbers for a memorable day.
Rachel Moloney of Holmoak Stables said it was a privilege to host the event in aid of Down Syndrome Kerry, noting that the day created a fantastic atmosphere
and showcased the strength of community spirit. She added that the generosity shown by all involved would greatly support the organisation’s ongoing work with individuals and families throughout the county. Across the tour, participants displayed exceptional sportsmanship and commitment, helping to create a vibrant and welcoming environment at every venue. The final presentation not only celebrated the impressive funds raised but also highlighted the unity and goodwill that defined the initiative.
Organiser Elsa Weissbich said the tour was inspired by her brother Naoise, whose joy and unconditional love motivate her passion for supporting Down syndrome awareness. She praised the equestrian community for its kindness and generosity, describing the tour as a powerful example of what can be achieved when people come together.
