Kerry Leaving Cert Students Asked To Share Mental Health Experiences Ahead of Exams

Leaving Certificate students across Kerry are being invited to take part in a new survey aimed at understanding the mental health and wellbeing of students as they prepare for this year’s State exams. Kerry Mental Health Association has partnered with the Irish SecondLevel Students’ Union to distribute the online questionnaire to final-year students in secondary schools throughout the county. The survey will be circulated on Wednesday, March 18, with students asked to complete it before the closing date of 5pm on Friday, March 27. The initiative comes five years after a previous survey of Kerry Leaving Cert students and organisers say much has changed in that time. Kerry Mental Health Association General Manager John Drummey noted that the

current Leaving Cert class of 2026 began secondary school during the early stages of the pandemic and experienced significant disruption to their education. Many missed the traditional transition from primary to secondary school and now face their final year during a period when the inflated marking system introduced during Covid is gradually being phased out. Students are also preparing to enter third level education at a time when accommodation shortages remain a major concern.

Findings from the earlier 2021 survey highlighted significant pressures on students, with many reporting high levels of stress and uncertainty during the pandemic. A large number also said they were unsure where to seek immediate professional help if they or a friend

Down Syndrome Kerry is inviting the public to a special celebration marking World Down Syndrome Day on Saturday, March 21st, from 12:00pm to 3:00pm at Boyles of Ballyseedy, Tralee. The event promises an uplifting afternoon of fun, connection and awareness as families, friends and supporters come together to celebrate inclusion and diversity.

Observed globally each year on March 21st, World Down Syndrome Day highlights the importance of promoting the rights, wellbeing and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. The date itself symbolises the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes the condition.

The event at Boyles of Ballyseedy will feature a warm, family-friendly atmosphere with activities for all ages, including creative arts, interactive experiences and opportunities to connect with members of the Down Syndrome community. These activities

aim to showcase the talents and contributions of people with Down syndrome while encouraging greater understanding and inclusion.

A highlight of the day will be the popular “Lots of Socks” campaign, where attendees are encouraged to wear colourful or mismatched socks as a fun way to spark conversations about diversity.

The Replay’ Launches to Reconnect Memories Through GAA Commentary

A powerful new initiative supporting people living with dementia has been launched at Croke Park, bringing the iconic voice of Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh back into Irish homes. The Replay’ is a unique online audio archive featuring commentary from All-Ireland football and hurling finals between 1985 and 2010. Developed by The Alzheimer Society of Ireland in partnership with the GAA and RTÉ Archives, the platform uses the proven benefits of reminiscence therapy to spark memory, connection and joy. Available at www.TheReplay.ie, the user-friendly platform allows matches to be easily searched by year, county or game, making it accessible for families, carers and communities. The familiar and much-loved sound of Mícheál’s voice, which once filled kitchens and sitting rooms across the country, is now being used to support emotional wellbeing and meaningful engagement. Experts highlight that emotionally significant shared experiences, such as memorable sporting moments, can help improve mood, stimulate memory and strengthen connections for people living with dementia. With more than 64,000 people in Ireland living with the condition, initiatives like The Replay are increasingly important. The project was conceptually and creatively developed by TBWA\Ireland, with CEO Deirdre Waldron noting that Mícheál’s voice is deeply embedded in Ireland’s national memory. By combining sport, culture and science, the initiative aims to deliver meaningful impact. GAA President Jarlath Burns described the project as a fitting tribute, while Mícheál’s family said it was moving to see his legacy continue in such a positive way. The club extends condolences to Glenflesk GAA on the passing of Oliver Favier. The senior team’s opening league fixture has been refixed for March 22nd. The B team made an excellent start to their Division 6 campaign with a 1-19 to 0-7 win over Tuosist. After leading 1-7 to 0-7 at half-time, they dominated the second half with strong performances across the pitch. The C team were narrowly defeated by four points away to Asdee but showed encouraging signs. Next fixtures see the B team away to Crokes and the C team at home to Kenmare.

Minor teams continue County League fixtures this week.

Round 1:

Kerins O’Rahillys were defeated 2-15 to 0-12 by Kilcummin in Fitzgerald Stadium, struggling to recover from a slow start in difficult conditions.

Kilcummin built an early lead, including two goals from Chris O’Leary, leaving Rahillys trailing 1-11 to 0-4 at half-time. A second-half rally, with scores from Shane McElligott, Gearoid Savage and Tom Hoare, reduced the gap, but a second penalty sealed the result.

Darragh O’Connor top scored (0-4).

Rahillys next face Beaufort at home.

Kerry FC Match Report – SSE Airtricity First Division (Matchday 5)

Result:

Kerry FC drew 1-1 away to Wexford FC at Ferrycarrig Park, earning another point on the road after a strong performance.

Match Summary:

A tightly contested first half saw few clear chances, with Kerry growing into the game and goalkeeper Harry Halwax making a crucial save to keep things level at the break.

Kerry took the lead in the 61st minute when Kieran Cooney scored his first goal for the club with a powerful diving header from a Finn Barrett delivery. However, Wexford responded in the 72nd minute through Mikie Rowe to level the match.

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors Match Report Result:

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors were defeated by Griffith College Éanna (92-66) in their final regular-season game.

Match Summary:

The Warriors started well, leading early, but Éanna took control in the second quarter with an 18-point scoring run. Despite efforts from Iggy Hunte and Jordan Perkins, Éanna maintained dominance throughout, leading 53-37 at halftime and extending their advantage in the second half.

Key Performances:

Iggy Hunte led the Warriors with 22 points.

Jordan Perkins added 15, with strong contributions from distance. Éanna’s Jaylyn Richardson starred with 28 points.

Key Factor:

Éanna’s superior shooting, particularly from three-point range, proved decisive, heavily outscoring the Warriors from distance.

What’s Next:

The result confirms a 5th place finish for the Warriors, who will face Éanna again in the Super League quarter-final playoff in Dublin. They’ll need a much-improved performance to progress to the semifinals

Ingredients

• 500g spaghetti

• 8 lean bacon rashers/medallions (fat removed, sliced)

• 2 cooked chicken breasts (torn)

• 6 sage leaves (chopped)

• 4 eggs

• Zest of 1 lemon

• 3 tbsp fresh parsley

• 1 cal spray

Method

Cook spaghetti, drain and return to pan. Spray pan, cook bacon 3–5 mins until golden. Add chicken + sage, cook 5 mins to heat through. Beat eggs with half the lemon zest, salt + pepper. Remove from heat, add everything to pasta with most parsley. Toss well. Stir gently until eggs form a creamy sauce (low heat if needed). Finish with remaining zest + parsley. Serve with salad.
