Kerry College Celebrates its 2023 Graduates
Kerry College of Further Education and Training celebrated the achievements of its graduates at the Brandon Hotel on January 25, 2024. The ceremony not only acknowledged academic accomplishments but also highlighted the personal growth and development each learner experienced during their tenure at Kerry College.
With over 500 graduates from various campuses, including Clash Road, Denny Street, Killorglin, Listowel, and Monavalley, this event marked the inaugural graduation for Pathway learners from Killarney, Killorglin, Listowel, and Tralee. Méabh Rohan, a Pathways graduate, shared her journey, emphasizing the independence and confidence she gained through her coursework at Kerry College, encouraging her to pursue further education.
Certificates were presented to graduates from diverse fields and
delivery methods, such as part-time, online, and full-time programs.
Ian O’Connell, a former learner and current podcaster at Radio Kerry, served as the guest speaker, delivering an inspirational speech centered on positivity, resilience, and gratitude. He stressed, “the only disability is a bad attitude,” highlighting the transformative power of a positive mindset.
Cllr. Jim Finucane, Chairman of Kerry ETB, extended best wishes to the graduates and urged those considering Further Education and Training to visit Kerry College Admissions Offices in Tralee or Killarney. MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Angela bought a second-hand car from a dealership and after 5 months she found that there were problems with it, and the engine and exhaust needed replacement. She is wondering about her legal remedies.
Consumer law changed from 28/11/2023 in terms of increased protections for consumers but the pre 28/11/2023 situation pertains in Angela’s case. When one buys a product, it should be of merchantable quality, fit for purpose and as described. There is a presumption that if defect arises within 6 months that it was there when you got it. However, with second hand items the merchantable quality standard relates to the price you paid for the item. In all consumer cases where there is a problem it is important to notify the retailer as soon as possible. Initially one might make an informal verbal approach and hopefully the matter would be sorted out straight away. But if the business is stonewalling you, it is important to set out in issue in writing is setting out as much detail as possible describing the item with serial numbers, registration number, the dates it was purchased, the purchase price, what has gone wrong and what you would like them to do about it. Make sure to have the proper business name of the retailer on the letter and your own name, address, email, and phone number. The remedies where there is a defect are rejection of the item seeking full refund, repair, replacement, and/or price reduction. Remember with second hand cars to try and do this within the warranty period. If a business ignores this letter there are alternative dispute remedies but going to court can be expensive. There is the cheaper small claims court up to €2000 and for claims up to €15,000 the District Court and above that it would be the Circuit Court up to €75,000. If this situation happened after 28/11/2023 there are several additional consumer rights e.g. Right to cancel within 30 days, giving the item back and getting a full refund. There are stronger rights in relation to informing the business you want the product repaired, replaced or obtaining a full refund if repair or replacement is not an option. In relation to cancellation of the contract with second hand cars one may need the car for work etc but if it is not working it may be no use anyway and requesting the full refund may be the best option. During the first year if you have a dispute with a business they have to show that the product was not faulty when you received it. So the burden of proof on this switches to them. Having said all that with second hand cars it can prove difficult to get a full refund even going to court in the matter so at the end of the day caveat emptor especially applies in the area of second hand cars and if one is buying a second hand car it is important to have it checked out by a qualified professional before purchase. If the car was bought on hire purchase or PCP one may have to approach the hire purchase company in relation to consumer rights.

2024 Cara Credit Union’s School Quiz
Cara Credit Union recently hosted The Noreen Lynch Annual Schools Quiz, coinciding with the nationwide Credit Union Schools Quiz that engaged 25,000 primary school children across Ireland. Held at the Kerry Sports Academy on January 27th, 81 teams from 43 primary schools in Tralee, Castleisland, Killorglin, Ballyduff, Causeway, Corca Dhuibhne, and nearby areas participated in this brain-testing event.
Teoranta, embraced bilingualism, allowing participants to answer questions in either English or Irish. The quiz, featuring general knowledge topics like geography, history, music, literature, and sport, encourages teamwork and the display of collective talents among local children.
We thank all the schools, students, families, and the Cara Credit Union team for making this event one of the biggest on the school calendar.”

In the Under 13 age category, Castlegregory secured the top spot with an impressive score, while two Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn teams claimed second and third place. Siobhan Donnelly, Marketing Manager, emphasized the
importance of supporting local schools and enhancing financial literacy for future generations. Donnelly also highlighted other initiatives, such as the Art Competition and the recently launched youth Current Account with a globally accepted Mastercard debit card. The winners in both age categories will progress to represent Cara Credit Union in the regional round of the National Schools Quiz.

QR CODE SCAMS!
Q: I received a message on social media with a QR code. Are these safe to scan?

Michael say: QR code-based phishing attacks are known as “quishing” and often follow the phishing playbook. You receive an email, a direct message on social media, a text message, a yer, or a piece of mail that includes a QR code. You are supposed to scan the code with your phone’s camera, and it will open a link. In some scams, the QR code takes you to a phishing website, where you are prompted to enter your personal information or login credentials for scammers to steal. Other times, con artists use QR codes to automatically launch payment apps or follow a malicious social media account.
These scams di er greatly, but they all have one thing in common. Scammers hope you will scan the code right away, without taking a closer look. QR codes often appear to come from legitimate sources, so make sure any correspondence is legitimate before you scan the code.
How to avoid QR scams
• If someone you know sends you a QR code, con rm that it is legitimate before scanning it. Whether you receive a text message from a friend or a message on social media from your workmate, contact that person directly before you scan the QR code to make sure they haven’t been hacked.
• Don’t open links from strangers. If you receive an unsolicited message from a stranger, don’t scan the QR code, even if they promise you exciting gifts or investment opportunities.
• Verify the source. If a QR code appears to come from a reputable source, it’s wise to double check. If the correspondence appears to come from a government o ce, call or visit their o cial website to con rm.
• Be wary of short links. If a URL-shortened link appears when you scan a QR code, understand that you can’t know where the code is directing you. It could be hiding a malicious URL.
• Watch out for advertising materials that have been tampered with. Some scammers attempt to mislead consumers by altering legitimate business ads, such as placing stickers over the QR code. Keep an eye out for signs of tampering.
• Do not enter any personal details or other sensitive information into websites you don’t know

10k Run:
Despite challenging weather, the 10k & 5k fun run saw a strong turnout, with over 300 participants. Thanks to the efforts of Frank O’Connor, Caitriona O’Sullivan, and Tony Corridon for ensuring a smooth race. Kerry Cancer Support Services benefited this year.
The Last Man Standing fundraiser closed successfully, raising funds for the senior team’s costs. Many participants remain after the first round, with weekly updates available on Facebook. Thanks to Tom Hoare for his technological support in managing entries. Most age groups are back training for 2024. New players are encouraged to join. The Tralee District finals of Scór na bPáistí will take place this month, with the county final scheduled for March 23rd.

TRALEE PARNELLS HURLING AND CAMOGIE CLUB WEEKLY NOTES
Calling All Hurlers:
Adult hurlers in the Tralee area will resume training on Friday, February 2nd, at 8:30 at Lixnaw astro turf. Anyone interested in playing hurling is welcome to join. Contact 085 1355566 for more details.
Academy Training:
Training for boys and girls from U6 to U10s will start on Saturday, February 10th, at the Kerry Sports Academy at MTU from 3 to 4 pm. Newcomers are welcome, and the club will provide hurleys and helmets for the first few weeks. The club is organizing a Last One Standing competition based on the Division 1 National Hurling League. Entry costs €10, with a minimum cash prize of €250. Contact Stephen Morrissey before February 3rd on 085 1098780 to enter.
Congratulations to the Tralee Parnells members selected for the underage Kerry Camogie squads this season. Best of luck to all the girls and management teams. Membership for the 2024 season is now open. Register via foireann. ie, selecting Tralee Parnells. Various membership options are available, with fees remaining the same as 2023.
Every Step Counts Challenge:
Tralee Parnells is participating in the Munster GAA Every Step Counts challenge, promoting health and wellbeing. Every club that clocks up 4000km between January 8th and February 12th will be entered into a prize draw to win €2,500.
Club Social:
The club’s social event will be held on Saturday, February 24th, at The Rose Hotel. Tickets are available for hurling from Agnes (0878377969) or Tara (0872940828) and for camogie from Suzanne (0872959166).
TRALEE WARRIORS
Mens U20 National League – Round 4
The Tralee Warriors secured a resounding 103-83 victory over Neptune at the Tralee Sports Complex on Sunday evening. This win marks their third victory in four games, positioning them for a Group 1 showdown against the unbeaten Ballincollig at the MTU Arena in Cork on February 17th.
The Warriors displayed dominance from the start, with Eddie Sheehy and Eoin Creedon leading the charge. Despite Neptune’s efforts, the Warriors took control, with notable contributions from Josh Osayanrhion and Brian O’Leary, ending the first quarter with a 23-17 advantage.
In the second quarter, the Warriors surged ahead, overwhelming Neptune with a flurry of scores. Evan Boyle and Olaf Michalczuk showcased their prowess, extending the lead to 46-21 by halftime.
The third quarter saw Neptune attempting a comeback, but the Warriors maintained their momentum, with Sheehy and Michalczuk continuing to shine. Although Neptune narrowed the gap, the Warriors still held a substantial lead of 77-62 going into the final quarter.
In the last quarter, Neptune staged a late rally, but the Warriors, led by Sheehy and Creedon, sealed the victory at 103-83. This win sets up a highly anticipated showdown with Ballincollig on February 17th.
