Train | Keeping Track of Train Training Needs Learning needs can arise for various reasons and can be identified by conducting a PESTLE analysis. PESTLE – Political, Economic, Sociological, Technological, Legal and Environmental – factors will continue to contribute to the learning strategies of organisations as laws, expectations and standards evolve and adapt. Political and economic factors including tax policies, trade restrictions as well as interest, exchange, and inflation rates are likely to impact organisations, and then in turn, the learning strategies for their teams. Within the construction industry the Legal factors of Health & Safety training, always has been, and always should be, at the forefront of training strategies for organisations - of any size. This will ensure that you and your team are not only competent in their role, but also compliant with the most up to date legislation. Construction, and its supply chain, continues to offer attractive opportunities for graduates to enter the industry and close the skills gap we are currently facing. One such gap is the opportunity for progression, but is this something you as an organisation are ready for?
In order to effectively identify any learning needs three areas must be considered; the team members knowledge of the industry, the skills required to complete the role, and the level of ambition for personal development. Knowledge of the industry can come from each team member’s career experience, training history as well as transparent communication of changes and requirements from management and governing bodies. Skills required ultimately can be taken from a specific job description. However, as each role evolves, all competencies must be considered. A direct comparison - in the form of a training matrix - of the team’s abilities ,and valid certificates, to the skills required for the role they are doing gives you a clear visual of each team members competency. The grid-like structure of a matrix also supports easy identification of skill gaps across a full organisation.
TFS are not only helping their customers gather the information needed to create up to date training matrices, but we are also providing ongoing management to ensure training continues to be prioritised throughout organisations across the UK. Get in touch today to see how we can help you!

Let Us Introduce...
NCTG (Norfolk Construction Training Group) is one of many regional Training Groups around the UK, funded and supported by the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board). The main focus of the group is to support small and medium sized construction businesses based, or working, in the East Anglia region by accessing good quality, value for money training. There is a focused and driven team looking after the current 64 members on a day-to-day basis. Thegroup is supported by a Chairman and Vice Chairman who are industry professionals with a real passion for the ethos of training and the benefits it gives to companies working within the industry. Due to the wide variety of industries the members work in, NCTG offer a range of different courses such as: Health & Safety at entry level for new recruits, Supervisor and Manager level for more experienced personnel, Training for Plant Machinery, Construction Equipment, courses for those who Work at Height and also sourcing longer period qualifications such as NVQ’s and Apprenticeships.
NCTG can also provide more generic (non construction specific) courses such as Mental Health Awareness, Fire Warden, Manual Handling and First Aid.
Having operated successfully for several years, strong connections with local training providers have been established which often enables members to benefit from exclusive discounted rates. Where there is sufficient requirement amongst the members, NCTG will arrange closed courses - resulting in further cost savings to the members. NCTG have recently established a relationship with Training First Safety, so members are now able to access a wide range of E-learning courses at very competitive prices. A complete package of services is provided – a “One Stop Shop” - for members including support with accessing available funding and/or grants, such as the CITB Skills & Training Fund, sourcing bespoke and specialist training and being a “Go-To” for advice and up to date industry news and information.
NCTG often attend local events to promote the industry and provide resources to young people who may wish to consider a career in construction. The group has also appeared on a podcast about apprenticeships in construction and continue to support the Local Enterprise Partnership Construction Working Party Groups where possible.
Annual membership of the group runs from 1st April until 31st March and the cost for the year is £96.00 (which equates to £8.00 per month). It is possible to join the group at any time and the membership fee will be calculated pro-rata.
Full members are those who are registered with CITB, and Associate members are those who are not. If you would like to know more about the service NCTG offer please visit www.nctg.org.uk call on 01953 600700 5 or email at mail@nctg.org.uk . NCTG would be very happy to discuss membership and answer any questions you may have. 3
Research A Safer and More Professional Future for Construction The majority of tradespeople and building professionals build to high standards, providing their clients with quality products and services that stand the test of time. Shamefully however, there are a significant minority that do not. From those that are either too lazy, or too profit driven to respect the importance of good and proper workmanship, to those that are nothing less than criminals looking to make a ‘quick buck’, ‘cowboy builders’ are not a myth and seriously threaten the reputation of building professionals throughout the UK.
Unscrupulous building firms undercut professional and competent businesses, putting downward pressure on standards and compliance with regulations and health and safety. This seriously undermines the image of the whole industry and the fact that it persists well into the twenty-first century is not acceptable. The concerning lack of regulation in the building industry isn’t just harming the reputation of good builders, it’s also damaging to the UK’s economy. One third of homeowners are so worried about having a bad experience with their builder that they refrain from commissioning construction work altogether, potentially costing the economy £10 billion a year.
In order to build a safer and more professional construction sector, we, the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), convened a Construction Licensing Task Force in 2019 that has since been meeting on a quarterly basis. The FMB represents over 7,000 small to medium-sized building firms across the UK. Bringing together numerous voices from across construction, together with consumer groups, the Licensing Task Force seeks to determine how a mandatory licensing scheme could best be integrated into the UK construction sector, while also raising awareness of the need for licensing more broadly.
6
4 6
Research A licensed construction sector isn’t unusual internationally, with Germany and Australia being two countries to have applied such a system to good effect. We believe licensing schemes such as these represent the only way to truly eliminate from our industry incompetent firms that lack the necessary knowledge and professionalism, posing a risk to themselves and their clients.
Research from the FMB shows that more than three-quarters (77%) of small and medium-sized (SME) construction firms support the introduction of licensing to professionalise the industry, protect consumers and side-line unprofessional and incompetent outfits. As you might imagine, consumers are also largely on-side, with 78% wanting to see a licensing scheme for construction, and almost 90% favouring the criminalisation of rogue and incompetent builders.
The issue has also proven popular amongst MPs, with many having fielded many constituent calls over the years detailing the damage and expense ‘cowboy builders’ have brought about.
You can stay up to date with the work of the Licensing Task Force as we progress the case for a licensed construction sector by visiting our website or by signing up to our mailing list join@licenceukconstruction.co.uk. The FMB is the largest trade association in the UK construction industry, representing more than 7,000 firms in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Established in 1941 to protect the interests of small and medium-sized (SME) construction firms, the FMB is an independent, non-profit organisation, lobbying for members' interests at both the national and local level.

Educate Tips for a Tip Top CV How to update your CV if you have been made redundant after a period of furlough… Many employers had to make use of the furlough scheme during the COVID-19 pandemic and unfortunately, across some industries, this has now resulted in redundancy. This has been the case for many in aviation, travel, and the entertainment industry to name but a few. So how do you explain this in your CV and how do you tailor your CV towards new roles? If you are still on furlough and considering other work, it is best to check furlough clauses from your current place of employment as some contracts state you cannot work elsewhere. Explaining furlough and then redundancy on
your CV... There is no requirement to go into a lengthy explanation on your CV. While you were on furlough you were still employed so no dates need to change here on your CV. However, if you no longer work there anymore you can simply write: made redundant following a period of furlough. Your period of employment finished the date you were made redundant not when you started furlough. This then allows the How do I tailor a CV if I am applying for a employer to understand why you left the different industry? role and many are very understanding about this and will not worry about any If you have been working in a different industry and employment gap here. seeking to utilise your transferable skills towards another role then you should tailor your CV accordingly. This enables the reader to see you are a stand-out candidate and have the appropriate skills. The two main sections to consider here are the Professional Profile and the Key Skills sections. To do this you need to really examine the job advert and make sure to mirror the language if possible.
86
Educate Tips for a Tip Top CV
Professional Profile This should be a snapshot of your skills and experience. Many usually emphasise their industry experience however, if you want to show your transferable skills you would do this here. So, for example if you were in the travel industry rather than writing that, you may write with vast experience in customer focused environments. Or if you were in the entertainment industry you may write about: ‘ensuring everyone receives a positive company experience’. At the end of the professional profile, you can note ‘currently seeking a new and exciting role where numerous transferable skills can be fully utilised’ or you can state why you are interested in applying for this type of work.
Remember quality over quantity is key, so spending that little extra time tailoring your CV will yield far more results. If you would like to have your CV reviewed for free you can do so here.
Key Skills Section Study the job advert in detail and mirror the skills required. In your current CV this may have a completely different focus particularly, if you are in a more senior role or different sector. It is important that you do not assume that the reader will know you have the skills required but adapt this section accordingly. So, make sure to go through the job advert and note the skills you have that match. Within the rest of the CV, you may wish to re-order responsibilities so that more relevant points are mentioned first. You should do this with key achievements also. However, if you are seeking a career change and realise you may have to start at entry level and you are currently more senior then you may wish to tone your key achievements down.

Educate Slips, Trips and Falls Slips, trips and falls (STF) account for as much as 30% of workplace injuries each year. It has also been reported that approx. 6.3 million working days were lost last year due to non-fatal workplace injuries. These injuries cost employers around £500 million each year. These are noteworthy statistics, however, research from the HSE shows that duty holders tend to see STF’s as rare events and give them low priority. Why is this, and how do we challenge, and change this attitude? It might be worth noting here that these statistics are not entirely accurate, as slips, trips and falls are 3 completely different things and should not really be grouped. However, the numbers still stand, and there is still room for a lot of improvement within our workplaces.
Legislation There are 3 key pieces of legislation when it comes to STF’s in the workplace. The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 –states that employers, so far as reasonably practicable, ensure the health, safety and well-being of employees at work as well as non-employees such as contractors and the general public. It also states that employees themselves have a duty of care to take reasonable care for their own health and safety.
The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (Reg 3) – states that every employer shall make a suitable and sufficient assessment of (a) the risks to the health and safety of their employees to which they are exposed whilst they are at work; and (b) the risks to the health and safety of persons not in their employment arising out of, or in connection with, the conduct by them of their undertaking. The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 (Reg 12) – states that every floor in a workplace and the surface of every traffic route in a workplace shall be of a construction such that the floor or surface of the traffic route is suitable for the purpose for which it is used.
What Are The Causes? STF’s can happen anywhere, in any workplace at any time, so it’s imperative to have an understanding of what the cause can be and how we can reduce this risk. STF’s can be caused by a wide variety of different factors such as; • • • • • •
Contamination (spills, leaks and splashes), Cleaning (wet floors, trailing cables), People (human factors), Flooring (co-efficient of friction, damages), Environment – (weather, noise), Footwear (sole tread pattern and compound).
8
10
Educate How Do We Prevent Slips, Trips & Falls? Over the last few years, the HSE has increased the research levels into STF’s, how they occur, how they are perceived and how they can be prevented. They have developed methods for testing different floorings’ slipperiness, testing footwear, ranking footwear, and also human factors. As previously mentioned, it was found that duty holders tend to give STF’s a low priority rating and are perceived as a rare occurrence.
The co-efficient of dynamic friction is the force between two objects when one object is moving, or when two objects are moving against one another. This is the value used to identify the slipperiness of a floor surface, or the strength of a foot tread amongst other things. This can be calculated by Pendulum Testing or using a Micro Roughness Metre – results from these tests indicate the potential for slip, generally rated as; high, moderate, or low slip potential. However, on a more basic level, there is so much more we can be doing to ensure the safety of our colleagues and peers:
1.Conducting “walk through/talk throughs” to gain a deeper understanding of tasks which are being performed in your workplace and where. 2.Attitudes, perceptions and the safety culture within your workplace – creating a see it, sort it attitude, and communicating control measures effectively and consistently throughout your organisation. 3.Carrying out Risk Assessments and actioning control measures to eliminate/reduce any areas which have the potential to cause STF’s as well as implementing a Safe System of Work. 4. Slip and Trip Mapping – quite simply put, draw a map of your workplace, mark all the high-risk areas on the map, record all accidents and near misses which have happened as a result of STFs, implement safeguards, continuously review.
Working together to challenge and change working practices, control measures, behaviours, and attitudes within our workplaces will help to reduce the number of injuries each year and raise the awareness of the importance of understanding STFs in our workplace.

Did You Get Enough Sleep
Last Night?
''Sleep is a non-negotiable, biological necessity'', Matthew Walker, Director of the Berkely Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab.
Consequences of sleep deprivation: • Reduced ability to focus on large amounts of information. • Difficulty sustaining your attention for long periods. • Slower reaction times . • Ability to problem solve reduced. • Poor memory recall. • Increased levels of cortisol [stress hormone]. • Poor regulation of emotions. • Weight gain due to higher levels of ghrelin-hunger hormone and low er levels of leptin-satiety hormone.
Most of us have experienced that awful feeling after waking up still tired. Moody, demotivated, just wanting to dive back under the covers. Not possible as work beckons. This is the mood you take to your place of work and colleagues, or clients if you're on the entrepreneur journey, expecting to experience a day of high concentration, engagement, and productivity. You may be copacetic with poor sleep. However, sleep is more important for your brain than you realise, studies have shown that most of us regularly need 7-8 hours a night. When you get enough sleep your attention is sharper, your concentration ability is higher and your learning capabilities deeper.
Electroencephalogram [EEG] readings show that your brain is actually more active when you sleep. There are some parts of your brain that are up to 30% more active during sleep than during the day.
An extreme consequence of sleep deprivation is your brain ''micro-sleeping''. Your brain may force itself to shut down for a few seconds when you are awake. You may become unconscious for a few seconds and not even realise. Can you imagine if this happened whilst you were driving or operating machinery? Sleep deprivation reduces your cognitive abilities akin to that of a drunk person.

Did You Get Enough Sleep
Night? MEMORIES
TOXINS
As you sleep, your brain is busy selecting which memories and learnings from your day are worth saving. Do you really need to save the memory of what you ate for breakfast that morning? Your brain will ''prune away'' unwanted neural connections. By pruning away excess connections, sleep effectively creates the space so that you can learn again the next day. Regular deep sleep aids memory consolidation. Your learnings and thoughts from your PFC [pre frontal cortex], the higher-ordered thinking region, get sent to your hippocampus-memory inbox for long term storage to be accessed in the future. Lack of sleep can decrease how much of what you have learned that day is stored in your long term memory.
Your brain cells are sending electrical messages all day long due to your thoughts, learnings, and everyday activities. These electrical signals ''produce'' toxic waste products. During sleep, the space between brain cells increases, allowing cerebral spinal fluid to cleanse the brain of toxins along with toxic proteins which are linked to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Sleep is important for your immune system and cardiovascular health. Regular deep sleep promotes a clean and healthy brain and may stave off a number of diseases.
LIMBIC SYSTEM Tiredness can lead to stress and mismanagement of challenging situations. Your amygdala is always on the alert for negative emotions and when it is activated it hi-jacks your PFC. You are less able to regulate your emotions, plan, assess, concentrate, and so on as a result. Your brain utilises 20% of the body's energy, it is such a waste of energy managing negative emotions and consequences as a result of tiredness. Potential, creativity, innovation, productivity... the list goes on ...losing out due to poor sleep habits. Adequate sleep can help you to react calmly and control negative impulses.
As you read at the beginning, ''sleep is a nonnegotiable, biological necessity''. Prioritise it and give yourself a healthy competitive edge in all facets of your life
Sleep Tips: • Keep your bedroom cool, 18 degrees centigrade is optimal. • The regularity of sleep is important, same time to bed, same time to awake, even at weekends. • 8 hours of sleep will give you about 62110 minutes of deep restorative sleep. • Reduce your screen time well before bed. • Reduce caffeine, wine, and nicotine before bed. • Exercise earlier in the day can promote sleep. • Write down your to-do list for the next day- get the points out of your head. • Meditation can help to calm your mind and aid sleep. • Prepare your bedroom—gorgeous bedlinen, low light, cool temperature— associate the ambience with rest and sleep. 11 13

Develop
| New Hybrid Ways of Working
Working for Your People & Your Customers Before COVID19 most companies would have said that hybrid ways of working were impossible due to the services we deliver, regulations, or various other reasons. Fast-forward to May 2021, and there are a lot of examples of effective flexible, or hybrid ways of working taking place in many companies. Forced change has increased the rate of transformation and proved that we can offer flexibility and has helped to change the old ways of working as there was no option but to transform. We’ve learned all kinds of things because we had to, and now, we have innovation, flexibility, and more creativity in the way we work. Before we make any changes to our working structure, we need to seriously consider our people by engaging them to find out what they would prefer and at the same time managing their expectations to make the most of this. Remember though, not everyone can work from home, or wants to, so any solution needs to take this into consideration to ensure inclusivity.
Engaged organisations consistently outperform organisations that are not engaging their people by 202%:
It is all about our People Now, it is about looking after the stakeholders before the shareholders to develop new hybrid ways of working. You must find out how your people are and develop an understanding of how they are doing emotionally. We can do this by getting up close and personal with them, by carrying out one to one interviews, focus groups, surveys and asking for their help in determining what the future of work could look like. This is not about assuming anything, it is about asking, listening, and then testing out ideas until eventually we reach a workable solution. Creating new project teams with responsibility to deliver what matters and what works for our people and our customers. There are some great examples out there already and the CIPD have said that of 2,000 employers surveyed 63% intended to boost hybrid ways of working.
Our Organisation Story This is a critical time in our organisations as we figure out what is the best way to achieve these new hybrid ways of working. What does success look like for our organisation? At last, we can drop the silo mentality and become a more connected organisation with our people understanding the contribution and accomplishments of each team leading them to work on how they can contribute to our overall success. It is time to rewrite “Our Organisation Story” and be proud of what we are achieving as we all work together in the same direction. Communication is a key part of this by asking what we need to know to make the best decisions and trusting in the same. It is something that we all need to improve on, and the message needs to be clear and consistent to ensure everyone knows that the work they are doing matters in delivering success. According to Gallup engaged organisations deliver increased productivity, work quality, retain top talent and increase their bottom line.
What do we do next? We need to get moving on our planning of what our new hybrid ways of working will look like as there is a risk that we could lose the best parts if we delay any longer. Leave the nostalgia of the good old days and what we used to do behind and power forward into an exciting future filled with engaged and committed people working towards success of our organisation, because now we know we can. Business Spotlight | Precise Installs Tell us a little bit about Precise Installs Precise Installs (Strathclyde) Ltd are plumbing and heating specialists based in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire. We deal with all aspects of domestic and commercial heating system installation, service and repair across the central belt of Scotland. We also install beautiful bathrooms and assist some of South Lanarkshire Council’s tenants with wet room adaptations via their Buy With Confidence Scheme. A lot of our work at present is completing first and second fix plumbing installations on lots of new build sites for a number of building contractors across Scotland - our team is continually expanding to meet this demand.
How do you think Precise Installs, and the industry, has been impacted over the last year? Precise Installs, and the plumbing industry in general, were greatly impacted by COVID19. New build sites were initially closed and even now that they are open again, progress on site has slowed as the result of the increased safety procedures involved in keeping workers safe and limiting the number of trades working on an area at any one time. That said, we at Precise Installs, continued to provide our customers with emergency services throughout the whole lockdown period. We were able to keep a skeleton team working to help anyone experiencing no hot water, heating or significant flooding. In order to keep our engineers, and our customers, safe the way we work is different now. We have adapted to the changes and like many other companies in the industry, we spent the time during the various lockdowns reflecting on our business model and improving how we do things.
What is the focus for Precise Installs as we move through the COVID-19 route map? The focus for Precise Installs is to future proof our business. We have invested lots of time and energy in obtaining MCS accreditation (Microgeneration Certification Scheme). This means that we are now accredited installers of ground and air source heat pumps which is necessary if our customers want to be able to access Government grant funding for these installations under the RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) scheme. Low carbon, renewable energy heating systems are the future for the UK and we want to play our part in helping to meet the carbon emission reduction targets. Enabling our customers to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and businesses is a big priority for Precise Installs and we happily provide advice and guidance on the very best heating solutions to suit their individual needs. We have also gained a Financial Authority License so that our customers now have various finance options when purchasing new bathrooms, heating systems etc as we are a broker for Hitachi Finance (UK) Ltd. Making sure our customers receive the very best service from us is by far the most important element of our business.
What’s next for the team at Precise Installs? As previously mentioned, moving into the installation, service and repair of low carbon, energy efficient heating systems is the future for Precise Installs. We spend a lot of time and energy keeping up to date with emerging technologies and trying to assess what’s in store for the plumbing and heating industry over the next few years. At the moment, it is not clear which technologies will be adopted by the UK Government to meet the carbon reduction targets or how they plan to incentivise home and business owners to adopt these often expensive heating systems. Whatever path is chosen, Precise Installs plan to be at the forefront of ensuring that our team are trained and ready to install, service and repair the domestic and commercial heating systems of tomorrow for our customers. We also have big plans to share our training with others in the industry, but that’s a longer term goal and one which we will be happy to share details of nearer the time. Watch this space………... Carly’s Corner Hey Everyone!
It’s now been 3 months since I started working at Training First Safety and I can’t believe how quickly time flies! Let’s look back and see what has happened in my first few months...
Within my first month Jenny and Sally were teaching me how to do all the tasks included within my role and teaching me about what we do as a company. I’ve been empowered to ask questions and supported with everything I need to know in order to be able to do my job efficiently and to the best of my ability. They’ve made me feel so welcome!
My confidence has grown massively! When I first started I was extremely shy and found some of the tasks given to me scary and difficult, due to lack of confidence and experience. Now, I can do them without a problem. I feel like I’m in control of my role and can take on any new task given to me as well as the existing ones I have. Within the 3 months I’ve been at Training First Safety I have learned so much about not only my role as Administrator but about who we are and what we do as a company. Health and Safety is at the heart of everything we do, and we want to make sure we continue to help and support people who need any type of training to the best of our ability.
I have also been learning about our Values: Commit - We don't only commit to our team but we also commit to our customers. Engage - Engagement is extremely important especially within the team at Training First Safety, with our customers as well as our community.
Invest - We love to invest our time into growing our business. Making sure, as a team, we are always giving 100% not only within the workplace, but to our customers too. All 3 of these Values are extremely important to us and we will always stand by them.
I can’t believe how much I’ve learned in such a short amount of time. I am excited to continue learning new things every day and progressing within my role as Administrator.
