H2S ONLINE COURSE OVERVIEW This Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) Emergency Awareness and Response course is the perfect introduction for any worker required to know the procedures and equipment necessary to work safely near or with the deadly gas. H2S is deadly for a variety of reasons. It is flammable and corrosive on contact with moisture. This makes it particularly dangerous to the skin, eyes, and lungs. The gas is also one of the most explosive naturally occurring compounds found on a job site. However, the most common danger presented by H2S is its extreme toxicity. All of these hazards make extreme safety measures a requirement when working in proximity with the gas. Many professions encounter H2S as it is a common industrial byproduct and occurs naturally through the decomposition of living matter. Because the gas is heavier than air, it frequently pools in pits, confined areas, and anywhere sludge or organic matter collects. Most H2S deposits formed long ago when seas dried up, leaving beds of organic matter that were then covered and, over time, formed hydrocarbon chains. Because of this process, H2S is a common hazard in oil and gas operations, but can be found wherever deep digging or various chemical processes occur. This H2S Alive program covers the basics of H2S hazard assessment, equipment, pre-job planning, safety procedures, and emergency response plans. The course also includes an introduction to the hazard control hierarchy, a system designed to first eliminate H2S before implementing a series of engineering and administrative controls to reduce workplace danger.
Remember, due to the high volatility of working with or near H2S, both employees and employers have a legal obligation to help with incident prevention & control.
