Africa, Where it All Began 100 Years Ago Our love of travel began in 1920 with a singular hotel in a small fishing village in the Cape. In that hotel, Solomon Tollman created a philosophy of always being 'Driven by Service'. This stands as true today as it was back then and is the guiding light for our parent company, The Travel Corporation (TTC) as well as Trafalgar. Traveling with us to Africa means as part of this promise we introduce you to the friends, families and locals we personally know, connect you to the remarkable wildlife and give you access to the can't-miss places you couldn’t get on your own.

'Driven by Service'. Trafalgar is the anchor brand of TTC. Started in 1947, we’re committed to continuing the legacy of this philosophy. All TTC brands live by this same virtue. TTC's Chairman, Stanley Tollman and his wife Bea founder of Red Carnation, inspire all of TTC to deliver exceptional service. When you travel with us in South Africa, you'll stay at Red Carnation Hotels The Oyster Box (featured on page 12), awarded as the best hotel
in South Africa. You'll discover first hand how the pursuit of excellence translated into this hotel being lovingly restored and why these awards are won, at this and all Red Carnation Hotels as well as every brand within TTC. Here are just 6 of the 42 TTC sister brands which are opening guests hearts and minds through travel.

The People You'll Meet The spirit and heartbeat of any place lies in its people. We’ll introduce you to local families, artisans, farmers and cultural specialists to hear their stories, savor their cooking and gain a deeper understanding of life in Africa. Here are just a few friendly faces you can expect to encounter.

Ancient communities keeping traditions alive Step back in time during your visit to the Himba tribe. Known as the last semi-nomadic people of Namibia, they’ll welcome you into their village to share traditions and customs that have stayed much the same over the centuries. You’ll gain a greater understanding of why the women coat themselves from head to toe in ochre ‘otijze’ paste, how they judge their social status by livestock and what part their ancestral fire plays in daily life.

Be spoilt by a stay at The Oyster Box and become part of the Tollman family history when you enjoy this magnificent hotel on Umhlanga’s beachfront, overlooking the Indian Ocean. In 1951, Stanley Tollman made a promise to his future wife Bea that they would one day own the property. In 2006 he fulfilled that promise. Along with their daughter Toni they undertook extensive renovations to turn it into a national treasure. During your stay you’ll feel the love and passion woven into every detail, which gained it numerous awards and accolades including a rating as the number 1 hotel in South Africa for the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards from 2017 to 2019.

Thierry Oussuo – One of the beneficiaries of the Award for Visual Arts
Over a decade ago we created JoinTrafalgar supported by our parent company’s not-for-profit TreadRight Foundation.
,
Today, we partner with local communities, artisans, farmers and families in Africa and around the world to ensure the livelihood of future generations.
When you choose to travel Trafalgar, know that you’re supporting a diverse range of notfor-profit organizations. Here are just a few of the 50 grass roots TreadRight projects around the world that are specific to our love of Africa. •
The Cape Leopard Trust protects the long-term survival of leopard populations through predator conservation.
•
The Leo Foundation saves lions and large carnivores in West and Central Africa.
•
The Wilderness Wildlife Trust advocates for existing wildlife populations, seeks solutions to save endangered species and provides education and training for local communities.
•
The Tollman Award for Visual Arts supports African artists hampered by limited resources.
•
The Endangered Wildlife Trust defends the native rhino population by funding the purchase of aircrafts for antipoaching operations.
Here is just one of the first hand Make a Difference experiences you’ll connect to on your travels:
▼ THE AMY FOUNDATION Support the development and empowerment of underprivileged 5 to 35-year-olds Did you know only 43% of African students who enter Grade 1 complete Grade 12? As one of the largest supporters of the Amy Foundation, we’re helping young adults in South Africa prepare for the world of work, employment and entrepreneurship. You'll become part of that contribution as you learn how the foundation’s creatively driven program makes learning enjoyable and encourages academic success.

ARRIVE VICTORIA FALLS AIRPORT - VICTORIA FALLS (3 NIGHTS) Welcome to Zimbabwe! Meet your Trafalgar representative on arrival at Victoria Falls Airport and transfer to your accommodations. Buckle up for an exhilarating encounter with Victoria Falls, an untamed natural wonder that has captured the imagination of explorers and adventurers since David Livingstone declared it the most wonderful sight he had seen in Africa. Board a cruise and navigate one of Africa's mightiest rivers, cruising past islands of basking crocodile and hippo pods lazing in the waning African sun, before returning to your lodge for dinner. (D) Hotel: Victoria Falls Safari Lodge VICTORIA FALLS SIGHTSEEING Join a 'Local Specialist' on a guided tour of the world's largest waterfall. Admire the powerful curtain of water from various vantage points in Zimbabwe – feel the fine spray and hear the thunderous roar as water crashes over a hundred meters into a swirling mass in the gorge below. Spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure with the sound of the 'Smoke that Thunders' never far from your ears. Tonight you may choose to join an Optional Experience Boma dinner and interactive drum show. (B, L)

TRAFALGAR TIP When visiting the falls, you’ll come across the Devil’s Cataract, so named for its role as a place where locals would cast their evil spirits and be cleansed. When missionaries arrived in the area, they saw these sacrificial ceremonies as ‘devilish’ and so the cataract inherited its rather infamous name. Moses Nyamasoka, Trafalgar Representative

The rest of the day is yours to explore Cape Town at leisure. Consider joining our Optional Experience to explore infamous Robben Island, with your guide revealing its turbulent past and the cell where Nelson Mandela spent the majority of his prison term. (B) CAPE PENINSULA TOUR Circumnavigate the Cape Peninsula, from trendy Camps Bay to Cape Point and back. The crashing waves of the Atlantic to your right, the rocky 12 Apostles to your left, wind your way along one of the world's most magnificent coastal roads towards the outcrop that is Africa's most extreme south-western tip. LAKE MANYARA – TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK We journey to Tarangire National Park and on this final game drive of the trip, we've left one the best until last. You'll encounter a natural landscape so entirely different from anything you've seen so far in Tanzania. Giant baobabs, flat-topped acacias and termite mounds dot the unusual landscape. Tarangire is renowned as one of the best places to view elephants and your Driver Guide will scout for the vast herds that roam these plains. Tonight, as the sky radiates red, yellow and orange, enjoy a bush sundowner and take some time to contemplate the incredible sights you've encountered during your East Africa adventure. (B, L, FD) Hotel: Tarangire Sopa Lodge TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK – ARUSHA – DEPART KILIMANJARO Travel to Arusha this morning. The rich aroma of local coffee lingers in the air as you savor lunch at one of Tanzania's largest coffee plantations. Then it's time to say a sad farewell to your new friends and Driver Guide, as you take your transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport for your outbound flight. (Should you have a late evening flight departure, you may wish to consider booking a day use room at the KIA Lodge airport hotel). TRAFALGAR TIP Take a sip of local culture when you sample the traditional Kenyan drink ‘Muratina’. This popular local beverage, made from the fruit of the sausage tree, surfaces during special occasions and is served up in an ‘African cup’, a hollowed cow horn. But be careful! Its soft drink like taste masks the alcohol it contains, and it can be fairly intoxicating. Dedan Kingori, Kenya Driver Guide
