We support the MASARANG FOUNDATION by planting fruit trees on the compound of the Tasikoki vet clinic, where endangered species animals are taken care of before being reintroduced to wild life.

This year, we will plant 25 different fruit tree species on the compound of Tasikoki (Indonesia) with the goal to improve endangered animals’ nutrition.

ABOUT MOSQUITOES GENERAL INFORMATION

Mosquitoes are common flying insects that constitute the family Culicidae. They are found around the world and measure an average of 1/8 to 3/4 in. There are about 170 different mosquito species in North America alone. Only female mosquitoes bite as they need proteins to produce eggs. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water or soft soil and feed on the blood of various kinds of hosts, mainly vertebrates, including mammals, birds, reptiles and humans.

PROBOSCIS

The mosquito mouthpart is used to pierce the skin and suck blood. It is also used to drink fluids rich in dissolved sugar, such as nectar and honeydew.

ANTENNAE

Their antennae contain sensitive receptors helping them detect carbon dioxide in human breath from distances of up to 100 feet.

SHAPE OF THE MOSQUITO SEASON WHEN DOES THE MOSQUITO SEASON START

Depending on where you are located, Mosquito Season could be all year long. In some states that may be true. For other states the mosquito activity will begin when the temperature reaches a consistent level of 45-50° F. At this level the mosquito eggs begin hatching and the mosquito season begins.

ABOUT TICKS

GENERAL INFORMATION

Ticks are external parasites, living by feeding on the blood of mammals, birds, and sometimes reptiles and amphibians. Ticks are not insects, although they are often mistaken for them. Ticks are actually classified as arachnids, or relatives of spiders, scorpions and mites. Tick populations tend to be higher in elevation, in wooded and grassy areas where the creatures they feed on live and roam, including deer, rabbits, birds, lizards, squirrels, mice, and other rodents. However, they can also be found in urban areas as well as on beaches in coastal areas.

Where found: Widely distributed across the eastern United States. The greatest risk of being bitten exists in the spring, summer, and fall. However, adults may be out searching for a host any time winter temperatures are above freezing. Stages most likely to bite humans are nymphs and adult females.

(Amblyommo americanum) Where found: Widely distributed in the southeastern & eastern United States. A very aggressive tick that bites humans. The adult female is distinguished by a white dot or “lone star” on her back. Lone star tick saliva can be irritating; redness and discomfort at a bite site does not necessarily indicate an infection. The nymph and adult females most frequently bite humans and transmit disease.

(Dermacentor variabilis) Where found: Widely distributed east of the Rocky Mountains. Also occurs in limited areas on the Pacific Coast. The highest risk of being bitten occurs during spring and summer. Dog ticks are sometimes called wood ticks. Adult females are most likely to bite humans.

Tick season generally begins when the weather warms and dormant ticks begin to look for food — in most places in the U.S., that’s in late March and April. Tick season typically ends when the temperatures begin dropping below freezing in the Fall. In some moderate climates, like California, Arizona, Texas or Florida, ticks are active throughout the year.
