How it began:

We’re Bernie and John Moran, two brothers on a mission to make life a little more fun! Growing up, we thrived on friendly competition, whether in the waves, on the gridiron, or with a deck of cards on the dining room table. We believe in the power of play and its potential to bring people together. We’ve lived it, and since the founding of Madd Capp in 2011, we’ve shared it. The regal orange and black monarch is the most popular and recognizable butterfly in the U.S. It’s said that early European settlers to North America named it in honor of their adored prince, William of Orange (who later became King William III).

SWEET FEET!

It’s true – butterflies “taste” with their toes, not their tongues! They rely on the receptors in their feet to find just the right plant to lay their eggs. They still use their mouth to eat, drawing nectar through the long, tubular proboscis that looks and acts like an elephant’s trunk (although a whole lot smaller).

DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME! Butterflies have surprising speed! Most of them coast about 12 mph. Not the skipper butterfly. It clocks in at 37 mph, as fast as a thoroughbred on a racetrack!

I LOVE IT WHEN WE’RE CRUISIN’ TOGETHER!

Monarchs will migrate about 3,000 miles in search of warm weather and can fly up to 100 miles per day to find it. Check the clouds – these butterflies have been spotted 10,000 feet in the air!

PASS THE SALT!

Love that dirty water?

Butterflies do! They crave moisture, but struggle to land on ponds and fountains, so sip the liquid from muddy soil.

“Puddling” provides the salts and minerals needed for males to attract mates and females to support egg-laying. Just a pinch will do!

LIFE’S TOO SHORT TO BLEND IN!

ONE YEAR OLD!

Most butterflies live just four to six weeks, but the brimstone butterfly beats the average! One of the longest-lived species, it survives up to a year – much of it spent in hibernation during the cold winter months of the United Kingdom, where it typically makes its home.

WAIT FOR IT!

Metamorphosis moves fast!

It takes about two weeks for an egg to hatch, become a caterpillar and then a chrysalis (or pupa), before a fullgrown butterfly emerges!

but I am actually an amphibian (a salamander, to be exact), not a fish!

Axolotls don’t blink. They have terrible eyesight and depend on smell and electroreception, just like a shark or a ray, to guide them in their environment.

Built in sonar system!

I AM able to survive in zoos, aquariums, and research labs, but my natural habitat is Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City – the only place in the world where you can find me in the wild!

I AM forever young! My anatomy is neotenic, which means I keep many of my juvenile characteristics right through adulthood.

I AM always smiling! My mouth turns up in a permanent grin . . . until my hunger kicks in. Then it morphs into a cup to suck up my supper!

Mollusks and crustaceans are some of my favorites. Yum!

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR! Those feathery twigs poking out from an axolotl’s noggin . . . they’re not just for show! They’re gills for breathing underwater. They’ve also got lungs for breathing above the water surface.

Breathe in, breathe out, breathe anywhere!

COLOR MY WORLD!

In the wild, axolotls have a brownish gray complexion that helps them hide from predators, like birds. In captivity, their colors vary from pink to black to white and brown.

The average stegosaurus was 25-30 feet long and 12-15 feet high, and it weighed as much as 4-6 tons. It wasn’t the biggest dinosaur of the late Jurassic period (about 150 million years ago), but it was as big as any animal on the planet today!

CHEEKY!

There’s no evidence of dimples, but let the record show . . . stegosaurus definitely had cheeks, one of the earliest dinosaurs to develop them. And they were needed! Their beak was toothless, but their cheeks held tiny, palmshaped teeth, ideal for chewing soft, low-lying vegetation like mosses, ferns, cycads, and pines.

No grasses though. Grass hadn’t evolved on earth just yet!

RAISE THE ROOF!

Greek for “roofed lizard,” stegosaurus was named by 19th century paleontologists, who believed its plates lay flat along its back, like shingles on a roof.

Today’s evidence points to a different layout – bony, kiteshaped plates stand upright in alternating rows along its spine, from its neck to its tail.

As big as stegosaurus was (school bus-sized), its brain was small by comparison – about the size and shape of a bent hotdog! It had one of the lowest brain-to-body ratios of any dinosaur.

Stegosaurus is a media darling and a natural on the big screen! It chased Fay Wray in the original King Kong, had cameos in Jurassic Park, and was one of the inspirations for Godzilla, the infamous sci-fi superhero.

ON THE ROCKS!

This ravenous herbivore relied on rocks to help it digest its rough, fibrous diet.

It swallowed small, smooth stones (called gastroliths) that tumbled around inside to break down the plants and extract the most nutrients.

A TAIL AS OLD AS TIME!

Stegosaurus is the state dinosaur of Colorado, where its remains were first discovered in 1877. Most fossil specimens were found in western North America and further south into Mexico. More recent findings in China and Morocco have scientists speculating that stegosaurus roamed farther and was around longer than originally thought.

No doubt about it, stegosaurus had an oddball look and an awkward gait! Iconic for its huge back plates, long tail spikes, and slightly strange silhouette, this slow-mover’s posture didn’t stand a chance. It had squat, broad feet, elephant-like hind legs, and super short forelimbs. Steer clear, though – stegosaurus was a bit unsteady, but its muscular tail had great aim!
