Many women live in poverty, not because they lack abilities, but because they lack opportunity. We are two mother/daughter teams who started Trades of Hope to give women that opportunity through creating sustainable jobs. We want mothers to keep their children, girls to be free of sex trafficking, and women who have been silenced to have a voice. meet Erica My name is Erica. I was in school, training to become a teacher. There were no teaching jobs available, so I was uncertain about my future. Then I was given an opportunity to make jewelry for Trades of Hope.

I was so happy I could make a salary doing something I love. I was given business training classes and have grown so much.

I’ve been learning English, too! In fact, each of the artisans I work with has completed more education than our parents.

We’re the first ones in our families to earn a salary!

All my experiences have made me more independent and responsible. I enjoy living in my own apartment without having to depend on others. My life is peaceful, knowing I am able to support myself and even budget for my future! I can pay to continue my education, and I dream of becoming a businesswoman and travelling the world! This is all possible because the women in America sell the jewelry I make!

meet Fay My name is Fay, and I’m an artisan in Asia. When I was a teenager, I was taken out of school and trafficked into a brothel by a relative. Alone, and scared, I became very depressed and was unsure of how I would survive in my new reality.

One day, I met someone who came into the brothel and offered me a way out. I was told I could make jewelry to earn money for my family instead of selling my body. Finally, I had hope!

Not only did I grow in joy and in my career, but in knowledge also! I completed English and computer classes, receiving certification from Microsoft programs! Sex trafficking once ended my education, my dreams, and my hope. But because of sustainable business opportunities, my life has been changed!

My jewelry is so much more than stylish, because every purchase of it creates more room for more jobs. This means another woman can come out of the brothels, just like me, because of people like you! THANK YOU -- on behalf of myself and the other women your purchase will rescue!

MEET ALICE My name is Alice, and I assemble jewelry. I’m happy doing this work because I feel free. I feel like a person! Also, my work has helped me financially. Now, I can eat whatever I want and whenever I want.

I can also save money. I even have a family! I have an adopted daughter who is 17 and is in school. I pay for her school fees. It is not good for people who are disabled in Kenya. They are treated poorly.

meet Asha The eldest of a big family, I could not go to school due to my father’s economic situation and had to get a job instead.

At the age of 17, my parents married me off. My husband did not have consistent work, so I became an agricultural laborer. We were paid only once in a while and it was not a good place. I heard about other work opportunities where I could make a fair wage and be treated well. I did not know how to make jewelry but was trained and accepted in. I have now been making jewelry for 10 years!

Life is much better and I am now giving training to other women! It gives me confidence and enough income, and I can now send my children to school. We were also able to make important repairs to the roof of our house and receive access to a health clinic!

Fair trade is important for a better and respectful life, especially for women. We are thankful to Trade of Hope for giving us valuable work, which helps my family to live a life with dignity and respect.

The reality for women living in slums in India is a hopeless cycle of malnourishment, illiteracy, and desperation. Generally, a woman’s only source of income is begging, selling trash, or prostitution. This cycle continues primarily because of a lack of education.
