With eight hours left to drive to my new home, as my daughter’s cat’s yowling and my young son’s perpetual requests/questions… “Are we there yet?” “I want to stop and eat,” “I have to go to the bathroom.” (again!?!)… set the backdrop to my wandering thoughts, I found myself imagining if it would be possible to find our fit in this new place. And if so, how? I was leaving a city and home I loved, driving to a house I had purchased sight unseen, and moving to a neighborhood I had never visited, in a city and state I had only been to once. I was excited, nervous, and EXHAUSTED! Exhausted from the months of packing and preparing. Exhausted from the long to-do lists and lack of sleep. But mostly exhausted from the emotions of saying goodbye to longtime friends, co-workers, and family members.
N Moving gave me a realistic perspective and appreciation for anyone going through a relocation process. As a real estate professional since 1998, I decided to create this guide to help acclimate individuals moving to the Metro Duluth area and to offer an overview of what life here is like. I have an unapologetic love for this city. I take great pride and joy in showcasing Duluth, and I value every opportunity to welcome someone new.

Roger Reinert where our lives are colored by the woods, water, and hills woven into our lives. Duluth’s indoors are pretty great too! Our world-class schools, our cutting-edge restaurants, and our thriving economic base. We have a booming world-class healthcare industry, well-paying jobs at Cirrus Aircraft, and higher-education strongholds like St. Scholastica, the University of Minnesota – Duluth, and Lake Superior College. But, the most valuable asset Duluth has are the wonderful people that make this city an amazing place to call home. Welcome to Duluth! Thirty years ago, I drove into Duluth for the first time. I grew up on the MinnesotaSouth Dakota border, so when I came over Thompson Hill and saw the lake and the hills I was quite literally blown away by the beauty of this place. A few years later, I moved here with the sole intention to be in Duluth; it felt like where I belonged. I know you will feel that way too. After all, Duluth has so much to offer, from its miles of mountain biking and hiking, to the amazing live music at Bayfront Festival Park, to its great golfing and snowmobiling. It’s home to amazing events like Grandma’s Marathon, the Duluth Airshow, and the Bentleyville Tour of Lights. Duluth is a place

St. Louis County has 4,655 lakes, providing plenty of choices for spending time on the water. Three popular lakes close to Duluth are desired destinations for residential homes and recreation. Pike Lake is a 482 acre lake located 10 miles west of Duluth with paved roads, city utilities, private land, and a 9-hole golf course. Located northwest and within 20 minutes of Duluth are 3,071 acre Fish Lake Reservoir and 8,000 acre Island Lake Reservoir. Both offer great fishing, boat-up restaurants/ bars, and a mix of private and leased land.

children and pets While moving can be a positive experience for a family, simultaneously it can be difficult for children as they leave behind their home, friends, and surroundings. Even if you have lived only a few years in the home you are leaving, that same amount of time to a young child could represent nearly their entire lifetime. Here are some things to think about that might help. ■ MOVING WITH CHILDREN
contact (letters, emails, phone calls, social media, etc.) coordinated parental involvement is key.
Share the plan and outline the steps so they don’t feel forgotten in the process.
Tips for packing and purging their things.
- Explain what will be happening and why. - Outline a rough timeline. If possible, include your kids in the home shopping experience.
- Ask and consider 1 or 2 of their wants for their “NEXT HOME.” - Make sure they either see their “NEXT HOME” or show them pictures or videos to help them visualize where they are going. - Once selected, have them name their “NEXT HOME.” - Situation permitting, allow them to pick their bedroom and discuss a possible theme and/or wall color. Develop a method to preserve their memories.
- Host a friends and neighbors open house “Our Next Adventure,” as early as possible, to take pictures, gather info., share your new address, and maybe have guests sign a pillow or t-shirt. - Enlist the help of your children to create a photobook. Let them take photos from their perspective (before staging or packing begins) to include the: home, yard, friends, school, neighborhood, playground, church, other favorite places and items to be purged. Maintain important relationships.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR I know this sounds biased, but I adore this guide. Years ago, my family and I moved to Duluth for my husband’s work. We experienced firsthand all of the nuances and challenges that go along with this type of monumental move. Trying to figure out where to live, what school(s) would be a good fit for the future, how to meet other families and who to contact with a never ending list of questions made us feel very vulnerable and anxious. We desired reliable information accessible as needed to make timely, informed decisions. Thankfully, we met wonderful people early in our journey who aided us in our process. As to be expected, it took time to get acquainted with the area neighborhoods, local culture and people. It also took time to acquire a list of treasured resources to help navigate all of life’s demands. Creating this guide has been exciting because the information wishlist I would have loved when I began integrating into this community is now a reality. It is my hope that anyone wanting to familiarize themselves with Duluth, and the surrounding areas, can now do so quickly and effectively with this guide. Relocating can feel intimidating, but adequate resources can replace doubt with confidence and peace.
