Families stopped to feed deer through the fences, children marveled at the animals, and the farm became a memorable destination for generations of visitors exploring Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Historic photographs capture the original entrance, expansive fenced enclosures, and the daily life of the farm, preserving an important chapter in the area’s history.

Living in Bayfield means more than owning beautiful property—it’s becoming part of one of Wisconsin’s most treasured communities.
Enjoy charming downtown shops, locally owned restaurants, art galleries, marinas, and the gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Spend your summers boating, kayaking, hiking, or exploring sea caves, and your winters cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and enjoying the peaceful beauty of the Northwoods.

We love the orchard opening into the big field below with it’s ancient apple trees. The sandy field is full of native little bluestem grass and wildflowers like yellow Coreopsis. The seedling balsam firs, white pines, red oaks and red pines are popping up along the field edges all around. The reindeer moss is growing in the dry, acid areas. Some of our favorite times are hiking in the big woods of red oak and red maple, and walking along the ravine with the water making gentle noise. We will miss watching the water of the big lake rising blue above the big trees. Neighbors join in with snow mobiles to create a sledding hill and cross country ski hills. Mushroom hunting is fun, watching for golden chanterelles in the wet areas. Every year we cut down our Christmas Tree from the wild trees that grow in the field and orchard. We love to see the old Deer Farm sign in the woods. We have the book by the former owner, with all the history. Information on the Deerfield property. Plantings and an informational to our neighbors. The old orchard by the entrance is getting cleaned up, and that orchard used to be in the entire lower field. Its sandy soil is just tricky to have apples in if you do not continually fertilize, but those old trees can be revitalized and helped if someone is willing. They are old apple varieties that the Hauser’s can identify when the fruit is on the tree. Neighbors of Deerfield Park I wanted you to know more about the work and planting Bill and I have done on the land that is part of your neighborhood. The parcel is in both the City of Bayfield (Part of the lower field and along the ravine), and in Bayfield Township (all the rest). Since last winter we had a large clearing on the hill logged and cleared, and opened up a views. We removed the home that was on it due to mold. We have sowed a lot of seed on this land and next year we expect the areas we sowed will begin to be a very butterfly and pollinator-friendly place! We bought this parcel in 2018 from Mary Rice to keep it from being chopped into 5 acre lots with a large home on each. The township zoning has changed positively to each lot to be .667 acre. The City of Bayfield has a plat with traditional lots. She had looked into building homes for seniors to age-in-place but the feasibility study was not positive back then. We are very aware of the even greater need today for small-medium homes in the Bayfield area, and we decided we could safeguard it and perhaps someday foster a quality development so that most of the land could still remain park-like. We do not wish to develop this ourselves so we will be looking to sell the land to someone who could do good things with it.
