Press Release - April 7, 2020 Contact: Tracy Russ, SOLID; tracy@solid.today; 704-579-0042 New Brookhill Launches Website at newbrookhill.com; Public Support for Affordable Housing on Brookhill Village Site Crucial Charlotte, NC – Developers for the proposed New Brookhill community have launched a website at newbrookhill.com to engage the community and share information, including: • the vision for the New Brookhill community and affordable housing plans • project financing and impacts of including, or not including, public investments • construction timeline and phased development to avoid resident displacement • requirements of the Settlement Agreement with the US Attorney’s Office • public presentations and community events “Affordable housing for working families is core to the New Brookhill vision. The time is now to move forward for people in Brookhill who have waited many years for change. The promise of affordable housing in New Brookhill depends on public partnership,” said Tom Hendrickson, leader of the New Brookhill development team. As proposed, New Brookhill includes over 50% of 324 new apartment units at affordable rental rates, including 65 units @ 30%AMI, 97 @ 60%AMI, 2 @ 80%AMI, 160 @ market rates. Requests for public partnership now before City leaders include a $4.5 million loan from the City of Charlotte Housing Trust Fund (HTF) and a $10 million loan from the Charlotte Housing Opportunity Investment Fund (CHOIF). Both loans will be repaid 100%. The project’s projected total cost is $67 million. See details at newbrookhill.com/questions. The decision-making process for Housing Trust Fund requests includes: 1) City staff recommendations later this week; 2) City Council Briefing on April 13; and 3) vote by full City Council on April 27. Phased construction at New Brookhill will avoid displacement during construction of 279 current Brookhill Village residents, including 86 children. This phased approach offers important health, safety and stability protections for families during the COVID-19 virus crisis. Newbrookhill.com is one part of community engagement efforts that include an on-site resource center, current resident meetings, and community-wide meetings for South End stakeholders. ###
