INtro duction Hi. Welcome to Camp North End. If this is your first time here, we’ll have to start by introducing you to the goats…

We have all kinds of goats here at Camp North End. We have actual, real goats - those are the cute, furry, bleating, grass-eating livestock animal friends who snack on our kudzu, entertain us, and serve as our informal Camp North End mascots. We have a Gama Goat - that big yellow, Jeep-Tonka-Transformer-looking vehicle with those huge wheels, that used to be built and manufactured here.

And, of course, we have a Gathering of Amazing Talents - team members, tenants, visitors, and neighbors striving to be the Greatest of All Time in their chosen field. The Camp Field Guide is is a story about us. It is a look into our culture, which we hope you’ll make yours!

This is not an HR manual, although you will receive one of those, too. The CAMP Field Guide is about who we are as a team, why we do what we do, how we do what we do and what makes Camp North End an exceptional place to work. Like most people and things at Camp North End, this book is multi-purpose, adaptable and flexible. You can use this book in all kinds of ways. You can use this book as door prop, laptop stand, coffee cup coaster, speaker stand, laptop lifter. A real goat would eat this book. (Maybe don’t take it too far…) But what the Goat Book is actually intended to do is give you a look inside the team culture you are a part of at Camp North End. Like our team, goats are agile, curious, social creatures that remind us that work can be fun. Like our colleagues, goats are tenacious, dependable, adaptable, cute, strong, full of personality, curious, fun, a little stubborn, always looking for fun, smart and super industrious. And if you’re reading this, we suspect, like you, they work hard, play well with others, and are always up to try something new. And once you read this, you will be sorta, kinda, maybe, almost, on-the-way to understanding the secret sauce that makes each day at Camp North End better than the last. So buckle up. Bring your best problem-solving skills, your boldest ideas, and a clear mind.

Each of us have the ability to lead, and the humility to follow. Sometimes we fit ourselves in where we are needed, other times we share what we know so others can grow. Whether outside of our comfort zones or well within our talents, we bring our best and draw from the strength of our individual talents, skills, experiences to tackle challenges, solve problems, and reach our goals.

We know there will be problems. This is complicated work, often performed under time pressure, and so there are always problems.

Ford Motor company Assembly Plant The Ford Factory, water tower, and Boilerhouse were designed by Albert Kahn (of Detroit architecture fame) and completed in 1924 after only 9 months of construction work. This Ford plant employed 500 Charlotteans and manufactured 231,066 cars and trucks from 1924 to 1932.

US Army Quartermaster Depot The US Army purchased the Ford Factory in June 1941, then went to work building another million square feet of warehouse space across the 76 acre site. At the peak of WWII activity, the Charlotte Quartermaster Depot employed 2,500 civilians and 80 Army officers processing everything from typewriters to uniforms, all of which were distributed to the basic training camps in Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia. The active community life of QMD staff was well-documented in the monthly “Tarheel QMD News”, two editions are preserved for reading in the CM Library Carolina Room.

Eckerd/Rite Aid Eckerd/Rite Aid used the site as a Distribution Center for east coast store locations for over 40 years. During that time, the City of Charlotte, Mount Vernon Asset Management, Vision Ventures, Charlotte Housing Authority and LandDesign partnered with residents to develop a vision plan for the North End corridor. In 2016 Rite Aid built a new facility in Spartanburg, SC, and made available 1.3 million square feet of industrial buildings.

ATCO Development ATCO purchased the property in December 2016 and began work on the largest adaptive re-use project in Charlotte. Since then, Camp North End has reopened to the city as a community hub for creativity and innovation where thousands of people come to work or spend time every day. With 3 Million square feet of development planned over the better part of two decades, the mix of office, retail, restaurants, public spaces, events, hotels, and residential development are adding up to a vibrant urban neighborhood center.
