Hope Finds A Way

We can reach more students Dear friends, Last year, we asked you to rise with us to meet the challenge of the moment – and you did. Our aspiring readers and volunteer tutors faced unprecedented obstacles as schools were closed, remote learning became the new normal nearly overnight, schedules were disrupted, and families faced unimagined health crises and economic hardships.

You stepped up and enabled ALP to continue serving our aspiring readers through investments in new technology, bolstered staff capacities, and new methods of instruction. Together, ALP aspiring readers, volunteer tutors, staff, board members, and partners adopted a growth mindset. As our students show us every day, we can do hard things that once seemed out of reach.

Crucially, your support enabled ALP to make a pivot to virtual training and tutoring. New tutors were recruited and trained virtually, experienced tutors learned new skills, headsets were mailed to students, and zoom licenses were purchased. Thanks to a game-changing gift from one family wishing to honor the memory of a loved one, ALP began implementation of an online learning management system. Because of your gifts, we were empowered to keep reaching aspiring readers.

We are mindful of the significant work that lies ahead as we celebrate these accomplishments. Our students experienced a steep learning loss stemming from the sharp reduction of in-person learning caused by COVID-19. ALP tutoring is one of the most effective ways to help students recover lost learning. We can and must recruit, train and retain more tutors so that we can teach more children to read. This challenge before us is clear, actionable and measurable.

ALP’s goal is to raise $1.35M for investments in tutor recruitment, training, support, and technology to meet students’ urgent needs.

The ALP board and The Stubblefield Foundation have created a challenge match for new and increased gifts over last year up to $80,000 to inspire giving and expand the base of support for students and tutors.

The need for 1:1 tutoring is greater now than ever.

An inspiring story of shared learning A student I was paired with initially disliked reading so much that, when he encountered difficult words, he would simply close the book. But, he did not give up and neither did I – we were in this together.

We kept working hard each week through the ALP program. Soon, he was reading more and more words during our tutoring sessions. Then, he moved on to reading entire pages without stopping. Over time, he started to eagerly read full books.

As a student/tutor pair, we transformed reading from a barrier in this aspiring reader’s life to a source of pride and empowerment. We learned along the way that reading gains from ALP were not the only benefit for him…or me.

As he made reading progress, his confidence at school grew and his overall academic progress did, too. I learned that the feeling of pride I experienced as an ALP tutor was as powerful as any accomplishment during my professional career.

I love this story because it brings home how ALP changes lives. Not just the students’ lives, but our lives as tutors, the readers’ families, and, ultimately, our community around us. When we prepare these students through reading, they come back to the community and help raise it up.

Diversity, equity and inclusion ALP can best reach aspiring readers when our organization, programs, training and practices authentically honor the identities and cultures of our students and families.

Three core diversity, equity and inclusion efforts move our DEI commitments from words to actions.

Training curriculum changes – to reflect more inclusive approaches with the children and families we serve.

Staff and tutor workshops – to build capacity on DEI principles and how ALP tutors can serve the whole child.

Change team – an internal, cross-function group that guides our overall efforts and ensures meaningful implementation.

How many more kids could be successful if someone just encouraged them?

– Beverly Clark Beverly was a doer in life. We wanted to memorialize Beverly with a philanthropic gift that would reflect her action-oriented approach to improving the world.

We knew this gift to ALP was right for several reasons.

First, we wanted the gift to involve early childhood education. Beverly’s college degree was in elementary education, and she treasured her teaching experiences in public schools. Second, we wanted this gift to benefit kids who were financially disadvantaged. Finally, we wanted the gift to empower achievements that would not be possible without funding and support.

Our gift enabled ALP to purchase and launch its new learning management system – an online platform for tutor training, multi-media resources and continuing education.

Beverly often said, ‘How many more kids could be successful if someone just encouraged them?’ Our support of ALP is her living legacy. We know ALP will be able to change more lives though the power of reading and literacy for young students.
