*Everything has to be able to survive water damage or rainwater -- waterproof/outdoor decorations

Beginning Information The walls are made of plywood. We decided to keep plywood because it can hold staples and adhesive for future projects. There are 2 broken support beams and some of the wood is peeling and breaking. There are no lower walls to these so they will need to be something to block it. The paint is peeling and breaking off so that will need to be scraped and sanded.

Cleaning 1. clean the leaves, trash, and dirt out of the bottom of target areas (shelf) 2. Pull vines off the support beams 3. Take metal signs off the wall and remove paint 4. take nails and staples out of the wall

Our final design was a combination of our rendered ideas. We kept a solid color from the Cottagecore vibe. After meeting with Mrs. Johnson & Ms. Ormand for color advice, the crew and Mrs. Rice settled on a green that would be more pleasing to the eye in the natural setting of the outdoor theatre space. The green was then balanced with the same wood stain that was used on our house floors and seating. Letting some of the wood shine through instead of painting it a color added to a tree-feel. We added glow-in-the-dark stars which get charged easily since the sun shines directly on the upstage wall. We ended up removing the numbers above the targets because we lost one in the leaves. However, we may revisit that design aspect. We will also add back the Boy Scout sign and actors’ signed stars. We loved our “Black Magic” wall colors. We will continue to advance our design in the spring. The walls could change for each show to match the theme.

Working: Our first step in working on the walls was to brush off the literal cobwebs, excess dirt, and pollen gathered on the walls. We scraped off some of the more apparent peeling parts on the wall and worked to clear the vines from the walls. The paint we purchased included primer in it, so we didn’t have to prime the walls before painting it.

Starting on Monday November 8, we began painting the side wall to the right (facing from the house) and managed to get 2 panels covered. One of our team members had to be out of school for a while after that first day, so we had a new team of workers that painted along with 1 original wall crew member. Using our three big rollers, 2 maller rollers, and a couple paint brushes, we applied a few coats of our black magic paint on the inside of the side walls. We did have to cover up some streakiness, but it dried well. We also started on the back wall with a coat of the tan “pony tale” color we selected. It was much thicker than expected, but it still worked. An added member and I worked on coating the spaces between the targets while other classmates added another coat to the inside walls. Painting the top area above the targets was a challenge since the wood was rotting heavily in places and chipping away. There were

11 numbers above the targets that we removed and decided to keep to hang back up in order to maintain some history of the space.

After finishing the inside, we unfortunately came to realize that we had not considered the outside of the walls. It was a white color and clashed with the black on the inside. Because of this, we had to purchase another gallon of black paint. We painted the main sections of the wall opposite of where the awning crew was working and covered 3 panels. The next day, the awning crew was on the other side, so we worked on the side we hadn’t painted yet. The wood on this side was more chipped, so it seemed to soak up the paint more. Another gallon was purchased and while we worked on painting the rest of the side walls, we had one of our honorary members paint the targets a green color that was selected after we didn’t like the pink.

The walls were spotted several times and for a while we were doing lots of chipping while also finishing up everything inside. The chalkboard paint was then applied to one of the inside panels. A larger group of non-crew members painted on one of our last days since only one of the original wall crew was there and she was redirected to find a solution for curtains. However, curtains were pushed back to next semester and the final focus was on finishing the farthest panel on the right side (facing the targets). It was finished and lighter areas got another coat and then we washed our brushes. Throughout all of this process, we stored our materials under the loft in a cardboard box. We also had several different cycling different workers, so some supplies were unfortunately lost due to a lack of regard for our materials.

Here is the final shot at the end of fall semester 2021. We were rehearsing Poetry Out Loud in the space. Awning needs a wee fix in the spring but we are super proud. Such a labor of love!
