Foreword As a high school principal, I receive great satisfaction in knowing that as a result of a positive relationship with a special teacher, combined with the student’s involvement in a special program, all children can succeed. One of my core beliefs is that every child can flourish as long as at least one adult, in this case specifically a teacher, sees the beauty and worth within the individual student and works to help that student appreciate their worth by discovering their own unique talents and abilities. As the teacher provides opportunities for each student to experience success, the student begins to blossom. Ultimately, the guidance and nurturing provided by the teacher helps each student begin their life’s journey and find and pursue their life’s passion. In many instances, the passion becomes the driving force in the choice of the student’s future career. St. Stephens High School is blessed to have many teachers, coaches, and adults who have guided adolescents to future fulfillments. In this book, you will witness the power of two teachers and two programs coming together to facilitate student success. Proudly, the arts program at St. Stephens High School is of exceptional quality as evidence in the work you are about to enjoy. Poet and director Molly Rice, who teaches Theatre Arts, and artist Susan Hardy, who teaches Visual Arts, have collaborated to bring the world of writing and art together as their students partnered with very special elderly participants from PACE @Home to listen and collect the wonderful, life stories in order to interpret those precious memories through art. It was a proud and powerful moment for me as I watched two professional educators work together for the benefit of their students and our community.
