COMPETITION & PUZZLE CORNER

Earlier this year, we visited Paul of AB & H Adams to see how he was faring with his Kverneland FRD280. Paul, a general farm, and plant contractor, handles a diverse range of tasks such as haymaking, cultivation, grass topping, pasture maintenance, and fencing.

The versatile FRD280 is a crucial asset for Paul, serving him in tasks like grass cutting, land maintenance, and organic weed management.

What set Kverneland apart for Paul was the robustness of their equipment. In comparison to alternative brands, Kverneland’s machinery boasts superior construction and balance. Paul was particularly drawn to the FRD280 due to its outstanding heavy-duty strength, as well as the substantial number of flails, and the and greater offset, which significantly elevates the FRD280’s performance.

The FRD280 operates seamlessly with Paul’s new Fendt 516; “It is a perfect combination really. They work very well together and make for a very compact unit.” Paul has observed a distinct improvement in the quality of cut, and distribution of cut material compared to his previous models. The proximity of the FRD280’s roller

“IT IS A PERFECT COMBINATION REALLY. THEY WORK VERY WELL TOGETHER AND MAKE FOR A VERY COMPACT UNIT.”

to the ground has notably improved contour following, contributing to Paul’s enhanced efficiency. The larger diameter rear roller enables Paul to cover more ground quickly. “The speed of operation is the biggest selling point for me,” Paul tells us, “I can cover much more ground in a given time with the FRD280”.

Having been a longstanding customer of Clarke and Pulman since 2010, Paul reflects on his experience “My sales rep Tom Forshaw is exceptional (especially at eating biscuits when he comes for a visit)! The Service Department is also particularly good - they always fit me in when I need them. It is nice to be so local, knowing if I need anything, help is just around the corner.”

LOADED IN

R.T. & J. Critchley & Sons proudly acquired their new Massey Ferguson 5S.135 back in May 2023. We figured it was high time we caught up with John and Robert to hear their thoughts on it. Based near Hutton, their farm spans two sites totalling around 300 acres and is home to 430 dairy cows, 120 beef cows, and 300 sheep.

The brothers decided to invest in the new 5S after finding their previous machine, the MF 4709, a tad undersized following an upgrade to a twin auger feeder wagon.

Both John and Robert had a clear priority: a tractor versatile enough to handle all their needs. Given their longstanding loyalty to Massey Ferguson, it was only natural for them to explore larger Massey models. Following a 5S demo, they were sold.

“At first, I was a bit concerned the 5S might be too large for our requirements, but it’s proved to be a perfect fit around the farm,” John shares. “It handles everything from slurry tanking to carting bales and silage, and we’ve even started using it for grass cutting. I particularly like the electric loader joystick, it is just next level,” adds Robert. The MF 5S Series tractors are purposefully crafted to deliver optimum handling ability when paired with MF FL Series loaders.

“OVERALL, IT’S A HIGHLY ADAPTABLE TRACTOR, REASONABLY PRICED, COMFORTABLE, AND PACKS ALL THE POWER WE NEED.”

This dynamic duo represents the pinnacle of performance, boasting seamless integration and factoryfitted precision for unparalleled efficiency and capability.

The loader joystick on the Massey Ferguson 5S series is engineered to provide seamless control over loader attachments. With ergonomic design and precise functionality, it enables operators to effortlessly manage loader tasks like lifting, dumping, and loading materials. This joystick isn’t just about convenience; its features such as integrated gear shifting and forward/reverse shuttle help to boost efficiency and productivity while keeping operator fatigue at bay.

FARMING WITH AMY

Since my last Tracks column, it’s safe to say it feels like it hasn’t stopped raining. The winter of 2023/24 has certainly felt like the longest on record, with very little arable work occurring here on the farm as it’s just been impossible to travel. C&P should really start thinking about selling hover crafts to be honest!

Being a mixed farm, we have obviously still been busy keeping all our beef cattle fed and bedded every day. We have even upgraded our mixer wagon to a new KV SILOKING 18 cube, as our old mixer just wasn’t big enough for the number of cattle we now have on farm. We demoed a few different brands, and we ended up going with the KV as it could be on farm within a week, and it also had the thickest steel on the front conveyor – so if me or dad were to clip a girder, it wouldn’t be disastrous.

The cattle enjoying their breakfast.

Cattle aside, all this wet weather has allowed me the time to give all our machines a good wash – a rarity on a farm as busy as ours! I actually really like power washing, as long as I can have my headphones in listening to a true crime podcast; I’m happy as can be. I even got around to giving our old work horse, our Massey Ferguson 5445, a good wash. With very nearly ten thousand hours on the clock and a reliability record newer machines could only dream of. it’s easy to see why she’s my personal favourite.

For years she’s pulled our mixer wagon, mixing thousands of tonnes of feed, rolled thousands of acres of crops, worked ground, and even carted grain and bales when other machines were busy.

I decided to give her some much needed TLC by brushing out the cab and was relieved not find any mice in there! I made sure to power wash every bit of straw off her, even her roof – which I am 100% sure has never been cleaned in her ten thousand hours of service.

Now, in march when i am writing this, i have gotten around to washing every machine on the yard but i’m very much hoping that spring will finally arrive so we can get on with drilling!

WE HAVE EVEN UPGRADED OUR MIXER WAGON TO A NEW KV SILOKING 18 CUBE, AS OUR OLD MIXER JUST WASN’T BIG ENOUGH FOR THE NUMBER OF CATTLE WE NOW HAVE ON FARM.

She never fails to start and has the best cab heater that in winter, we use to thaw out frozen hosepipes. In all these years of work she has collected a fair few dents but has taught countless students how to drive. Probably the reason she has the dents I suppose!

She has now been moved onto running our bedding machine every morning. So, after a winter as grim as this, she was in dire need for a wash with straw stuck to her every surface. It got to the point you could barely see out of the windows, so we had taken to opening the back window to see, inevitably letting straw fly in the cab!

DYNAMIC DUO

On a sunny afternoon in March, we called in to see Mark Pope of Mark Stephens Groundworks, to see how he was getting on with his two new JCB mini diggers. Mark bought a JCB 8008 CTS and JCB 8026 CTS from Clarke & Pulman in September 2023.

Mark Stephens Groundwork is based in Merseyside and specialises in site clearance, landscaping, and of course groundworks, for both domestic and commercial clients. “I use my mini diggers for everything!” Mark tells us.

“Due to the compact design of the 8008, I mainly use it for domestic clients. I often have to go through houses to get to their gardens to landscape them, which is why the 8008 comes in handy. In comparison, the 8026 is the ideal weight for bigger projects, such as site clearances”. Mark considered a variety of brands when looking for new diggers before opting for JCB. “I opted for JCB as they offered a 5-year warranty, and when I sat in each digger, I really liked them – they were both comfy and spacious”.

The 875kg 8008 CTS micro excavator is a compact machine, capable of high performance in the most restricted areas, including within buildings and in rear gardens. However, the 8008 shouldn’t be underestimated

– the lift capacity of the machine allows for increased digging forces and use of larger attachments.

Its extending undercarriage enhances stability, offering class-leading dig depth and reach. Users enjoy ample legroom and a straightforward interface, free from confusing change-over switches. Engineered for maximum productivity, the 8008 CTS minimizes downtime and streamlines operations with swift and straightforward daily service checks, and can run all day without refuelling, thanks to its 11.5L fuel tank. The 8008 can easily be relocated between job sites, thanks to its trailer-friendly design.

“I OPTED FOR JCB AS THEY OFFERED A 5-YEAR WARRANTY, AND WHEN I SAT IN EACH DIGGER, I REALLY LIKED THEM – THEY WERE BOTH COMFY AND SPACIOUS”.

JCB 8008 CTS SPECIFICATION

Max. Dig Depth: 1.69 m

Max. Dump Height: 1.98 m

Max. Engine Power: 9 kW

Power Type: Diesel

Tailswing: Conventional

Operating weight: 950 kg

The 8008 CTS is compact enough to fit through houses, in order to work in the garden.

JCB 8026 CTS SPECIFICATION

Max Dig Depth (m): 3.05

Max Dump Height (m): 3.22

Max Engine Power (kW): 18.9

Power Type: Diesel

Tailswing: Conventional

Operating Weight (kg): 2,867

Described as ‘the out and out class leader when it comes to lifting and stability’, the 8026 CTS elevates mini excavator productivity to unprecedented levels. With an impressive bucket and dipper tearout performance of 23kN, and 17kN respectively, the 8026 has an 82% better lift capacity than its ZTS counterpart.

The addition of the ‘Maxi Lift’ dozer allows the operator to raise the machine’s front end to gain additional height for loading or dumping materials.

This feature is particularly useful for reaching higher areas or loading materials into trucks or bins. By providing additional lifting capacity and flexibility, the Maxi Lift dozer enhances the versatility and efficiency of the mini excavator, allowing it to tackle a wider range of tasks with ease.

Safety is at the heart of the 8026, with services isolated when the control pod is raised. JCB provides optional guards for boom and cab work lights, safeguarding components in risky conditions. An alarm also triggers if the safe load limit is exceeded, thanks to the hose-burst check valve option, and wide-opening service access panels facilitate routine checks with ease.

“Overall, I’m impressed. Both machines are strong, powerful, and smooth. I also bought 5 buckets with my two new machines. Together, they work a treat. I’m made up!”.

THE GEN7

On a surprisingly sunny afternoon in early April, we caught up with Alan Baybutt & Sons’ Farm Manager Charlie, and machine operator Jamie, to hear their thoughts on the new addition to their machinery fleet, the Fendt 728 Gen7 Vario..

Alan Baybutt & Sons have been operating for more than 60 years, farming around 850 ha of outdoor salads and vegetables, including a variety of lettuce, celery, leeks, and cabbage, as well as some cereals as bread. Having acquired the 728 in late 2023, following the running of several 828 models, Charlie shares, “We opted for the 728 as it matches the power of our previous 828’s while being more compact. The power to weight ratio is impressive.”

Sharing his insights from behind the wheel, Jamie notes, “Overall, the 728 offers a noticeably smoother and faster driving experience, and a comfier one too! The design and layout of the 728, particularly the new FendtONE armrest, make driving and operating the machine much easier.”

“The screen is very user friendly, and the joystick is also improved. I have to say, the 728 is also one of the quietest machines I’ve driven.” Boasting amenities such as multistage seat heating, and improved air conditioning, the 728 ensures fatigue-free operation. Jamie adds, “The customisable profiles for both opperators and implements are really handy too - they save me a lot of time when switching implements.”

“THE POWER TO WEIGHT RATIO IS IMPRESSIVE.”

AGCO’s innovation extends to the engine design, with a newly developed 7.5-liter AGCO Power engine tailored for the Fendt 700 Vario Gen7. Incorporating the Fendt iD low-speed concept, this engine delivers optimal torque even at low speeds.

Other new features include VarioDrive single-range transmission with automated 4wd system, taller profile higher capacity hydraulics, and most notably, the option of Fendt’s VarioGrip central tyre inflation system.

Speaking about their experience with Clarke & Pulman, Jamie is pleased “They’re always there when you need them, which is important for us. Having a machine that’s ready to go when we are is crucial, so reliability means everything to us”.

The 728 Gen7 is ready to work. The 728 Gen7 hard at work

DIFFERENCE

IN THE WORLD OF MODERN AGRICULTURE, WHERE INNOVATION MEETS NECESSITY

Fendt’s VarioGrip is leading the way with its integrated central tyre inflation system. This cutting-edge technology allows for quick adaptation of tyre pressure from 0.6 to 2.5 bar – even while driving.

At the heart of VarioGrip is its ability to change tyre pressure at the touch of a button. This plays a crucial role in protecting soil health and fertility by reducing compaction and wheel slip, and contributing to increased efficiency, while simultaneously lowering diesel consumption.

Protecting the Soil

Less air pressure in the tyre creates a greater contact area, distributing the load over a larger area, therefore safeguarding the soil. The increased surface area also plays a vital role in protecting the porous structure of the soil - a critical factor for preserving its fertility and increasing productivity rates. In contrast, when tyres are narrow and hard, topsoil can be damaged by the ‘slip and rip’ effect, and fuel consumption increases.

Reducing Fuel Consumption

The economic advantages of VarioGrip are equally impressive. With up to 8% less diesel consumption in the field and 2% on the road, farmers can experience substantial cost savings. Setting the tyre pressure for optimal performance not only reduces fuel consumption, but also increases speed on the road, resulting in up to 3% shorter journey times. By adjusting tyre pressure for soil cultivation, users can enjoy 10% more traction power

and less wheel slipleading to increased work rates and reduced diesel consumption.

Technology

VarioGrip Is the only fully integrated system which protects the pipes by routing internally on both front and rear axles, improving reliability and durability. Fendt offers VarioGrip for both flange and bar axles, providing versatility in its applications. With a straightforward push-button control on the Varioterminal, users can easily configure separate pressure settings for the front and rear axles, catering to both fieldwork and road usage with minimal inflation times thanks to high output water cooled twin compressor

Fendt’s Grip Assistant complements VarioGrip by recommending the right tyre pressure, optimal ballast weight, and driving speed based on the specific implement or ballast. This integrated system, fully accessible through the Varioterminal, demonstrates Fendt’s commitment to providing a comprehensive solution for modern agriculture.

Grant number FETF109 is available for the Fendt VarioGrip. Find out more at gov.uk.

THE MIGHTY MASSEY

Earlier this year, Massey Ferguson announced the launch of the MF 9S range, a new generation of reliable, straightforward, and connected machinery that combines power with versatility; through the latest innovations, engineering expertise, and agricultural knowledge.

The MF 9S range was designed to provide larger farmers, professional users, and contractors with increased power levels, and automation, while the new generation cab and controls offer unrivalled operator comfort.

After more than five years away, Massey Ferguson returned to LAMMA 2024 in partnership with its UK dealer network. While there, Massey Ferguson showcased the new six-model MF 9S range, which tops at 425hp.

A Powerful but Efficient Engine

The AGCO Power engine, a 6-cylinder with 8.4-litre capacity, features a simplified exhaust aftertreatment system with larger diameter single turbocharger and removed the need for EGR valve.

Tank Capacity to Cut Downtime

The AdBlue tank has a 68-litre capacity, while the fuel tank can hold up to 660 litres, reducing the need for frequent refuelling and minimizes downtime during long working days.

Maximum Power with a Boost

The engine now achieves maximum power at just 1,850 rpm, which helps save fuel and reduce noise and wear. Engine Power Management (EPM) can also boost power by up to 30 hp and generate up to 150 Nm of extra torque. While 9S.425 models do not feature EPM, full power is available constantly.

Multipad Lever Control at Your Fingertip

The Multipad lever controls the transmission, cruise control, rear linkage, PTO, and headland management. It also features an integrated micro-joystick to control the spool valves.

IT ALSO FEATURES AN INTEGRATED MICROJOYSTICK TO CONTROL THE SPOOL VALVES.

Automatic Mode

Operators can adjust speed using the Multipad lever or foot pedal while Automatic Mode sets engine rpm according to load and speed, ensuring efficient performance. As with 8S models, there is no longer need to switch between ‘pedal’ and ‘stick’ drive modes.

Power to the ground

To efficiently put the 9S’s power to the ground, a Central Tyre Inflation System (CTIS) is available as a factory fit option. Controlled through the Datatronic 5 tractor terminal, the system incorporates a twin-piston compressor to offer rapid inflation from field to road pressures. CTIS offers improved traction by running tyres at correct field pressures, reducing wheel slip and compaction, which in turn reduces time to complete tasks and fuel usage.

PIONEER OF POWER

The Honda Pioneer 520 stands out for its remarkable blend of agility and power, setting it apart from traditional UTVs. Despite its compact design, this vehicle boasts an impressive power-to-weight ratio.

Equipped with a powerful 518cc engine, the 520 delivers heightened performance, complemented by a five-speed automatic transmission, that ensures optimal pulling capability. Remarkably, all this power is packaged within a slender frame, measuring a mere 1270 mm wide, enabling the 520 to navigate tight spaces where other UTVs falter.

Transporting the 520 is a breeze; it snugly fits onto trailers thanks to its lightweight construction, tipping the scales at just 483kg, making it one of the lightest UTVs available. Enhanced with an electronic fuel injection system, the 520 effortlessly conquers diverse terrains and conditions, including in cold climates and at high altitudes. From agricultural tasks to estate management, the versatility of the 520 makes it a standout choice for various applications.

TRANSFORM WITH THE TELETRUK

The teletruk may not be the first machine you think of when it comes to JCB’s Agricultural lineup, but its unique features are certainly worth a look.

Originally launched in 1997, the teletruk was the JCB chairman’s idea; to combine a telescoping loadall with a conventional masted forklift, to offer a high payload and forward reach in a compact chassis. In short, the teletruk presents several unique selling points and gains in versatility, productivity, efficiency, and not least safety. Seven models are on offer, ranging from electric 2wd 3.0tonne lift, to top end 3.5t 4wd machines powered by a 62hp diesel engine.

Versatility

With options of 4wd and traction tyres, the teletruk can cope with rougher terrain and looser surfaces where conventional masted forklifts may struggle. Crowd/dump movement of up to 106° also allows the use of buckets and other attachments to suit different applications, further enhancing the machine’s versatility. Attachment coupling is available as a mechanical pin locking system or a hydraulic easy change system. Up to two auxiliary hydraulic circuits are available to suit implements such as bagging buckets, sweepers, grabs and box rotators.

UP TO TWO AUXILIARY HYDRAULIC CIRCUITS ARE AVAILABLE TO SUIT IMPLEMENTS SUCH AS BAGGING BUCKETS, SWEEPERS, GRABS

AND BOX ROTATORS.

Productivity

Thanks to its telescopic boom, the teletruk can reach up to 2.6m forwards, enabling it to load vehicles from one side with ease. At 2m reach across a trailer bed, a 3.0t machine is still rated to lift 2.3t, offering the capacity of a much larger telescopic loadall. This is all while keeping compact dimensions and a tight turning circle.

Efficiency

With the option to reach over multiple pallets or boxes, double handling and repeated moving of items can be reduced. And thanks to its versatility with attachment options, you may no longer need multiple machines for specific tasks.

Safety

Unlike any masted forklift, the teletruk offers full forward visibility with no obstructions to block your view - both to the environment around the machine and the product you are attempting to pick up. Another major safety factor comes from the machine’s Load Moment Indicator (LMI) as used in JCB’s range of telehandlers. This monitors load capacity and if an overload is detected, machine movement is slowed and limited to reduce the chance of incidents.

Applications

Thanks to its unique features, the teletruk’s applications are not just limited to pallet operations. Suitable for use in farmyards, veg and root crop handling, town and country supply stores, feed and fertiliser merchants, turf growers, builders supplies and timber merchants, if you have anything that needs loading, lifting or shifting why not see what the teletruk can save for your business.

FENDT ON FORM

Earlier this year, Fendt unveiled its latest marvel in the form of the Fendt 600 Vario series, marking a significant breakthrough in the 150-200 hp performance class. This category plays a crucial role in European agriculture, spanning applications in arable farming, grassland, transport, and front loader operations.

What sets the Fendt 600 Vario apart while it is a compact and manoeuvrable 4-cylinder tractor, the 600 series boasts high performance and payload at a remarkably low power-to-weight ratio. Innovative features like the low-speed Fendt iD concept, Fendt VarioGrip central tyre inflation system, and a 60-inch track width option further enhance the adaptability and efficiency of the Fendt 600 Vario series. These features not only boost tractive power but also contribute to fuel savings. The electronic system architecture, scalable to meet individual needs, provides access to the comprehensive FendtONE onboard and offboard solutions.

Comprising four models – Fendt 614 Vario, 616 Vario, 618 Vario, and Fendt 620 Vario – this series covers the power range from 149 to 209 hp. Notably, Fendt has introduced the DynamicPerformance (DP) added-performance concept across all models. DP injects up to 15 hp of additional power on demand, offering optimal control without being tied to speed or specific tasks.

The revolutionary Fendt VarioDrive transmission technology is a highlight of the series. This singlestage drive train, with independent control of front and rear axles, ensures maximum tractive force, ground protection, and manoeuvrability. The pull-in-turn effect facilitates an incredibly small turning circle, eliminating issues like wheel marks and turf damage.

With a focus on comfort, the Fendt 600 Vario series incorporates the FendtONE operating system, providing continuous updates and digital solutions. The VisioPlus cab ensures optimal visibility, and a variety of seat configurations, including a premium seat with advanced ergonomic functions, which caters to driver comfort. Safety is a paramount concern, addressed through features like a comprehensive chassis and safety concept, and trailer brake assist which can automatically apply trailer brakes.

A key focus in the development of the Fendt 600 Vario was global adaptability. The series is designed to deliver flexibility, manoeuvrability, and robust power for diverse agricultural requirements. The 4-cylinder, 5-litre, AGCO Power CORE50 engine, exclusive to Fendt, ensures compliance with global emission standards, including Europe’s Stage V. Moreover, the engine is future-ready for alternative fuels such as HVO, promising lower CO2 emissions.

THE 600 SERIES BOASTS HIGH PERFORMANCE AND PAYLOAD AT A REMARKABLY LOW POWER-TO-WEIGHT RATIO.
