WELCOME TO TRACKS AUTUMN/WINTER 2021 It’s been a busy summer here at Clarke and Pulman! Amy, our brand ambassador (and Lidl TV star!) has been busy out and about since our last issue, visiting local businesses and learning about how they have adapted and diversified. You can read more about this on our ‘C&P in the community’ pages where you will also be able to see what else we’ve been up to in the last 6 months. We will be hosting our very own Rufford's Christmas Markets this year, with stands from Wild Fox Distillery, Wallings Ice Cream, Bella Coffee House, Smelly Bakery, The Fudge Dealer, Game Birds of a Feather, Little Nut Tree and more. We will also have a bar, fairground rides and, of course, late night Christmas shopping at Rufford's.

The event will take place at our Garstang Depot on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th December. BERRY BROTHERS FARMS TRUST IN KVERNELAND EFFICIENT 6 ME T R E WORKING WIDTH

We called in to see Mark Berry from Berry Brothers Farms Ltd, based in Rainford, St Helens to see how they are getting on with their Kverneland U-drill 6000, cultivation drill and seeder. The family currently grow a mixed enterprise of cereals, carrots, beetroot and potatoes. In 2019, Berry Brothers invested in the Kverneland U-drill 6000 fold. This model boasts a working width of 6-metre, row distance of 12.5/16.7cm and larger hopper capacity than the 3m and 4m models at 4350 litres. They’d previously bought a Kverneland fertilizer spreader through C&P and liked the build quality and reliability. So, when looking for a new combination drill and seeder, KV was an easy choice. How it works The front wheel packer works to level the soil, taking out any large clumps and prepares the earth so that the tools behind are able to work with the correct depth. This particular model has also been fitted with paddles which help to further level the soil. The disc harrow is then equipped to score a uniform line in the soil bed, which is aided by the built-in suspension

of each disc. A second row of offset packers provide optimal soil compaction and prepare the bed for easy perforation of the coulter. The previous process of drilling and pressure creates a good seeding depth and placement. This can be easily controlled from inside the cab thanks to the ISOBUS technology, with either a 12.5cm or 16.7cm row distance. The combination of cultivation and seeding is a more efficient way of farming. The 6 metre working width means that more ground can be covered in less time, using only one piece of equipment. The harrows are designed to ensure the seeds are covered correctly. This is important in order to maintain a good capillary system in the soil by putting a small layer of loose soil over the seed. This ensures the best possible germination. The fully automated headland management system adds to the efficiency of the process, saving time and up to 5% of seed by automatically stopping when the headland is reached. This ensures the seed hoses are empty at this point in the sequence. This allows the operator to concentrate on guiding the machine and provides for optimum precision and time management.

Before investing in the Kverneland U-drill, Berry Brothers found their previous combination drill heavy and awkward, tying up their bigger tractors. They also found that it pushed all of the weight of the drill onto the back wheel of the tractor. Alternatively, the U-drill 6000 is more level, distributing the weight evenly so that the tractor is only carrying its own weight, this in turn means less soil compaction and no need for front weights. “Clarke and Pulman have provided an excellent service, very quick to come out and really good to deal with. We’ve had no issues, it’s a really well-build machine”, explained Mark.

More powerful than its predecessor, the JCB TM420S pivot steer, telehandler is built with the new 4.8 litre stage V DieselMAX engine and is JCB’s most powerful telescopic wheel loader. We look at how JCB have made this mega machine pack even more of a punch. Increased efficiency & productivity The new 8-speed power shift transmission with torquelock now delivers increased productivity, efficiency, improved load retention, an easy transmission and smoother operation. This allows for auto gear shifting, depending on what tasks are being undertaken, and can therefore gauge the power needed. This new transmission, along with features such as a variable speed engine cooling fan, high back-off power brakes to reduce drag, and load-sensing hydraulics also allow for optimal fuel efficiency. The auto engine shut-down also comes in handy not only saving fuel but also machine hours. ‘S’ model extras The ‘S’ version indicates a bit more power than the TM420 and is designed with a heavier workload and more demanding jobs in mind, whether this is for use on the clamp, moving bales and feeding

livestock or just moving around the farm. The ‘S’ offers a higher specification with additions and upgrades such as a choice of seat with built in heating and lumber support. The maximum lift height & lift capacity remains the same as the TM420, however the most notable difference is the jump in maximum engine power in the latest machine – from 145hp in the 420 to 173hp in the 420S. This has made a sizeable difference both on the road and the clamp and makes for smoother operation overall and improved manoeuvrability. What else is new? This model has also seen some adjustments to the cab design with the addition of a gas strut on the door for improved entry and exit, particularly in bad weather. The one-piece windscreen and roof window & roof wiper allows

for increased visibility of over 13% as well as angled roof bars allowing for even better visibility overhead. The addition of a programmable feature button on the joystick is also a surprisingly versatile highlight and is enabled for a variety of timesaving options. This is particularly useful for turning the torquelock on and off or setting a specific lighting option should the operator frequently find they use a specific set of lights out of the 360 degree working lights available. The new integrated rear camera is another welcome addition, allowing the operator to view beyond the bonnet to the back of the machine which would otherwise be obscured. This, along with the height and level adjustable steering column and electric handbrake, means the operator is equipped to easily adjust their position and have access to everything within easy reach.

WHEN RELIABILITY IS KEY, IT HAS TO BE JCB After clocking up over 6,000 hours on their last JCB TM320s, J&M Sanderson & Sons decided it was time for a new one. Brothers John and Robert Sanderson, along with their father John and a number of eager grandchildren, milk over 400 cows on their family dairy farm near Kirkham. We caught up with Robert and his son Thomas one Sunday morning at Pasture Barn Farm to ask them what they thought of their new JCB TM320s. “There’s only one other machine we use more on the farm, and that’s the milking parlour! When you’re

putting 2,000 hours plus on it a year, reliability has got to be key. That’s why we chose JCB, because we think they’re the best in their class," explained Robert. “It’s a great piece of kit and a dream to operate. We have a few members of staff and any of them can jump on it and work it without any trouble. We’ve put Bibload tires on this new model which have made a noticeable difference. They last longer than the standard tyres." “We rely on this machine so much. We feed with it, mix in house blend, bed all the cows on straw and buckrake 4 cuts of grass every summer for the whole herd. With

such a high dependency on the machine, it’s important to service it regularly. Clarke & Pulman have been great to deal with and so we didn’t hesitate to ask them to look after the machine and book it in for its routine service on their new Service+ contract." Fifteen-year-old fourth generation farmer, Thomas Sanderson had spent the morning washing the TM320s for a photograph, so the least we could do was give him a JCB football and a C&P mug as a thank you for his efforts! ASHWORTH'S VALTRA G135 A VERSATILE ALL-ROUNDER We caught up with Dan, his wife Anna and their little boy Joe from M.D.B. & J Ashworth at their family farm in Clitheroe, to find out how they’re getting on with their new Valtra G135 active Tractor. Started by his grandfather, Dan and his dad Mark have been running the 250 acre dairy farm for over 35 years. The father and son team were one of the first to try out the new G Series tractor with a demonstrator G135 after its launch earlier this year. They were so impressed they decided to make the investment and order one for April delivery. With 180 acres of grassland (4 cuts of sileage), 20 acres of wholecrop wheat, 50 acres of grazing land and 200 milk cows to feed, the tractor has become the ‘go-to’ tractor for the farm for most tasks.

The G135 has a maximum boost power of 145hp and a standard maximum torque of 550 with 560 boost – the highest power specification of the series. This, combined with its ease-of-use, versatility and agility makes it the perfect all-round tractor for yard and field use. “We’re really impressed with the power. It’s easy to use, anyone can drive it. We have lots of different drivers in the summer and everyone who has driven it likes it. It’s our goto tractor”, added Dan.

This year is Valtra’s 70th anniversary, any tractor bought in 2021 will receive a special edition badge to commemorate the occasion.

Local farmer, Amy Wilkinson, updates us on life on her Southport farm and her new role as star of a Lidl TV advert!

Since my entry in the last edition of Tracks, life has been very busy and I have been given some amazing opportunities. Some of you may have seen that I now write an ‘In Your Field’ column in the Farmers Guardian and have also been asked to be ‘the farmer’ on a new Lidl TV advert – which included a free trip to London in order to shoot the

advert. I really can’t believe any of it has happened as, if you were to ask my Dad and the rest of my family, I am happiest left alone feeding my cows! Don’t worry though, my Dad is still keeping me busy with work at home on the farm as well, as you can see from all of my photographs.

AMY'S REVIEW KVERNELAND MACHINERY Our first purchase was our Kverneland bedding machine or shredder in 2013. This machine has certainly stood the test of time – putting out 16 bales of straw a day throughout the winter for our cattle. We have also put out woodchip and paper with it when straw has been scarce. Don’t get me wrong, if you were to ask previous students who have worked for us, they would say it is temperamental, however I believe that this was more the operators at fault! Secondly, we have our rear flail. We use this to top pastures, ditch edges and sometimes oilseed rape stubble. We have found the version that we have, which rides on two wheels instead of a roller is a lot better for these jobs than what we had previously, as there is no roller sending cuttings up into the bearings. And lastly, we have our most recent purchase – new mower bought this year. My Dad has always bought second hand mowers and we’ve always figured out why they are second hand soon after. It’s not ideal when you’re having to ask around to borrow a mower to finish the last 6 acres of grass, all the while the rain clouds are gathering because yet another bearing has gone. So, Dad decided to treat himself to a brand new mower and it’s one of the best things he has bought! It has performed brilliantly so far, and with harvest so late this year, we’re going for three cuts of grass instead of our usual two to test it out properly. All three pieces of equipment are very well made and I believe will last a very long time despite the lack of care machinery of this type usually goes without, just look at our bedding machine as proof.

MF 5S Series The MF 5S offers a range of five models between 105hp and 145hp and is MF’s best-in-class dairy and livestock tractor, all with the AGCO Power 4.4L, 4 cylinder, stage V engine and either Dyna-4 or Dyna-6 transmission. It’s 6,000 kg lift capacity (with a choice of three hydraulic systems), narrower bonnet and more compact design make this series perfect for livestock/ dairy farms. The manoeuvrable and agile design allows for a 4m turning radius which makes this tractor perfect for moving around the farm.

4 models available from 155hp to 190hp with 6.6L, 6-cylinder AGCO Power, Stage V all-in-one engine available in Dyna-6 and Dyna-VT transmissions – all models except the 7S.190 which is Dyna-VT transmission The 7S range is made for a larger farm and larger fields and the small to medium arable sector or contractor. With the extra power of up to 20hp than the 6S, this range is well suited to pulling a heavier load, with 14 tons gross vehicle weight and iconic wasp waisted chassis the extra power is ideal when needed for PTO, hydraulic or transport applications. It has even more capacity in the field for pulling more demanding implements and higher load capabilities, described by MF as the “ultimate tractor in the fields”. This range also boasts excellent manoeuvrability with its 4.93m turning radius and like the 6S, a maintenance free lifetime suspension design, with no greasing points. The 6S and 7S come in 3 different specification levels: Essential, Efficient and Exclusive, with varying features.

MF 6S There are 5 models available from 135hp - 180hp (up to 200hp with Engine Power Management), all with the 4.9L, 4-cylinder AGCO Power, Stage V all-in-one engine and available in Dyna-6 and DynaVT transmissions. The 6S is a versatile model which sits between the 5S and 7S and benefits from the best of both. It has more power than the 5S so is perfect for more heavy duty and demanding implements but is a compact and manoeuvrable size. This is what makes this model the lightweight all-round tractor with both power and traction and the best power to weight ratio in the 200hp sector, with 400kg less weight than a comparable 6-cylinder. The long wheel base and optional larger tyre (42”) work to minimise fuel consumption and reduce soil compaction.

The Dyna-7 brings technology; fuel efficiency; and affordable transmission. Available in all models except 8S.305. The Dyna-VT provides maximum comfort and precision and is now available in 6 models between 205 – 305hp. Available in all models. The Dyna-E Power is made with dual clutch technology; continuous shifting; max power to the ground and the best fuel efficiency in its class. The Dyna-E Power is available in all MF 8S models except 8S.305, which is available in Dyna-VT only. The 8S now also comes equip with Trelleborg TM1000 Progressive Tractor (PT) range tyres, developed in partnership with Massey Ferguson, offering a larger footprint and superior floatation which means a more comfortable cab as well as less stress on the soil and reduced fuel consumption.

C&P IN THE COMMUNITY We look at what's been going on locally for the last few months #supportlocal campaign: Connolly’s Crop Box Jonathan Connolly started up the business when he left school and bought his first tractor at 19. The business has grown from there. In 2020 the family diversified by selling seasonal and locally sourced produce via their social media pages. The boxes are full of produce sourced from local farmers which keeps food miles down. The boxes include Bradshaw's Cabbage, Prescott’s sprouts and cauliflowers and Adam’s eggs. The family decided to set up this side-line in October when they noticed a need for local produce to be delivered to the door due to some people being unable to leave home due to restrictions. To this day they are the largest independent quality ice cream manufacturers in the North West! Their contact with the public gave them a passion to educate with a focus on field to fork and so they opened the Farm Park in 2008 – gaining them a Food Hero Award from Lancashire Life in 2012. The 350 acre dairy farm, home to their 200 cows, is still fully operational and provides milk for the ice cream business

Anglezarke Beef and Lamb Based in the picturesque surroundings of Anglezarke, on the edge of the Pennines near Chorley, the Drinkall’s run a traditional hill farm, slowly maturing their beef and lamb in the stunning surroundings for maximum taste and tenderness. Helen started selling their home reared beef and lamb in boxes 7 years ago and delivers them to the surrounding areas. The meat receives amazing reviews from customers and each box includes a variety of cuts of meat. Arkholme C of E Primary School, Garstang Unfortunately Arkholme C of E Primary School were not able to hold their summer fair this year, but they didn’t let the pandemic slow them down. They decided to run an online summer raffle to raise funds for chrome books for Year 4 and Soundfield systems for two of their classrooms!

The Fiddler Family have been customers of Clarke & Pulman since the business started in 2003 and they have been producing Fiddler's Lancashire Crisps from their farm in Rufford for the past 10 years. Over five decades of knowledge goes into their homegrown potatoes used for their crisps which are then cooked by hand in their own fryer on the farm. The crisps are currently available in eight traditional Lancashire flavours. The ingredients are sourced from across the county. Keep your eyes peeled on their page as new flavours are on the horizon very soon!
