WELCOME TO TRACKS SPRING/SUMMER 2021 Like the rest of the country, I am looking forward to a more enjoyable 2021. Like you all, I have missed the simple things in life, like being able to pop into each other’s homes for a brew and a chat. 2021 was always going to be a big year for our country, with our exit from the European Union on the 31st December 2020. As a business owner within the agricultural industry, who trades in Europe, it was vital that we agreed a mutually favourable deal that kept our ties close and our relationship strong. No one could have foreseen the huge global crisis that the pandemic brought. It has changed the way we live our day to day lives. It has also changed the way we do business, of course in some ways this will be for the best. The farming community are no strangers to adversity. Problem solving and dealing with unforeseen events are what make farmers so resilient. Together, as an industry we have managed to continue to work, trade, import, export and produce crops to feed our nation in the biggest crisis that most of us will ever have to live through. Once again, our farming community has risen to the challenge and together we have all contributed to supporting and feeding the nation. I am extremely proud of the way our staff have conducted themselves during the last 12 months. They have worked long hours under difficult circumstances and without the normal breaks, holidays, and time with their families that is vitally important to the physical and mental wellness of us all. As a
thank you, from the 1st of this year, we have introduced a new holiday. Any member of staff whose birthday falls on a weekday will have this day off. At the beginning of the year, we welcomed a new business to the group, Ramages DIY, a longstanding, family-run business based in our local Burscough village. I feel the new business will fit perfectly into the group and I look forward to working with the existing staff at the shop to continue its success. Earlier this year we also saw the retirement of our Head of Accounts, Heather Grice. Heather has been an extremely valued and loved member of the team here at Clarke & Pulman for the last 15 years and will be greatly missed by both myself and the whole company. We have included a little thank you to Heather within this issue for her hard work and dedication during her time here and hope that she has a wonderful and restful retirement! We’re looking forward to the summer season and are optimistic about the rest of the year. We’ve continued to support our Key Workers in agriculture throughout the pandemic and will continue to be here whenever you need us. I hope you enjoy our latest issue of Tracks.

MDH ADD BRAND NEW JCB TM320S TO THE MIX P OW ER & VERSATILI FROM JCBTY TM3 2 0 S
MDH was first formed by Dave Horton in 2005. Based in Southport, Merseyside, the company began supplying road surfacing, utilities and groundworks. In 2018 they expanded into supplying Readymix concrete and have quickly become known as a trusted supplier of concrete to the agricultural and commercial construction industry, as well as the general public across the North West. MDH Readymix now supplies mixed concrete to customers such as Balfour Beatty and Cadent Gas for anything from road servicing to foundations and public walkways. As the company expanded in 2018, they decided to invest in a second hand JCB telehandler from Clarke & Pulman. They later swapped it for a brand new JCB TM320s in 2020 with 3 year’s warranty and services packages to help fix costs and provide peace of mind.
As the primary use for the machine is the movement of core materials, the TM320s offers power and versatility, making it more suited to this type of work than a standard telehandler, particularly when working in a concrete plant. For MDH Readymix, the TM320s has proven to be invaluable. The dramatic increase in workload and growth of their customer base in the last two years has meant that as a business, they have needed the equipment to ensure that they see little to no downtime of machinery. They have found everything they need in the JCB telescopic range and have found them to be a perfect fit for their business model. A bigger loading bucket and the increased versatility of the TM320s means that overall efficiency is achieved resulting in better handling. “Clarke & Pulman and our sales representative Tom Forshaw have been great to deal with and do
exactly what they say, I’m very happy with the service”. One of the reasons for choosing Clarke & Pulman is the back-up supplied by the parts and service department. This can make all the difference when your machinery plays such a vital role in the day to day running of your business. For example, whilst their TM320s was in for a service, Clarke & Pulman supplied MDH Readymix with a courtesy machine to alleviate down time and minimise business interruption as much as possible.
If you would like to know more about the JCB TM320s or Wheel loader range, you can contact our Sales Support Hub on 01995 640302 or contact your local sales representative. 3

STAFF NEWS
A FOND FAREWELL
In February this year, Clarke & Pulman saw the retirement of Heather Grice who has been with the business for almost 15 years. Although sitting in the accounts department, it is fair to say that over the years Heather has had a hand in just about every part of the business, from Parts and Service to Accounts and Finance and everything in between. Her vast knowledge and experience meant that if ever there was a query or problem, no matter which department, the advice from everybody would always be to go and speak to Heather, because she will inevitably know the answer! Heather joined the company back in 2006, when it was in its infancy. Previously, she’d spent 35 years working in banking and finance living on the island of Jersey and Isle of Man. After meeting her husband Les in 2004 at the Isle of Man TT races, they made the move back to the UK. Changing course from the financial services sector into agriculture must have presented its challenges. On occasions, she must have considered getting back on the ferry!
Luckily for us, she decided to stay, and, over the years, Heather has become one of the most respected and appreciated people in the company. She has worked alongside Ged the Managing Director, becoming his secretary as well as managing the day-to-day company accounts. And, despite trying to retire numerous times over the last 4 years, she’d been convinced to stay. We would like to wish Heather all the very best for the future, we hope she enjoys her retirement to the fullest and doesn’t forget to come back for a visit!
“ HEATHER HAS BROUGHT WITH HER A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE, HER HARD WORK AND EXPERTISE HAVE BEEN A MASSIVE ASSET TO THE COMPANY OVER THE LAST 15 YEARS. SHE REALLY WILL BE GREATLY MISSED BY ALL”. GED CLARKE MANAGING DIRECTOR, C&P

FENDT: FAVOURITE FOR LOCAL FARMERS Right: The Hargreaves purchased a Fendt 724 and 828 with C&Ps Service+ contract, reducing the cost of ownership compared to rival brands
We caught up with David and Marshall Hargreaves of David Hargreaves Farms to find out why Fendt is top of their list when it comes to tractors. The father and son team run an 800 acre mixed beef, sheep and arable farm in Wrea Green, Preston. The Hargreaves family have been Clarke & Pulman customers for many years and they were the obvious choice when looking to upgrade their current tractors last year. “Clarke & Pulman are a family business with family values, just like ourselves. Always approachable, friendly and offer a personal experience from start to finish," David explained. They purchased a Fendt 724 and a Fendt 828. Both tractors are equipped with Profi Plus, RTK GPS, and are of high specification. We asked Marshall and David what attracted them to the Fendt brand.
“These two tractors are put through their paces daily and are used all year round. Mowing, bailing, carting grain, ploughing, sowing, grinding grain, chopping straw and other general winter jobs.” “The high power to weight ratios that Fendt boast makes the tractors versatile for all year-round use. The chassis size makes them easily manoeuvrable and practical around the yard and the high horsepower makes them fantastic in the field," added Marshall. “We spend a lot of time in the cab and the driver experience is second to none in these tractors. It’s a smooth and comfortable drive, head and shoulders above its rivals”, smiled Marshall.
So, after years of owning rival tractors, what made them go for not just one, but two Fendts? “Well, it’s simple. The overall build, quality and residual value make the Fendt tractor very affordable and great value for money. This, partnered with Clarke & Pulman’s Service+ contract giving us fixed priced service and warranty, means the cost of ownership is reduced when compared to rival brands, explained David. To this day Fendts are unbeaten in efficiency, dynamism and comfort. But don’t just take David and Marshall's word for it. Speak to your Clarke & Pulman sales representative and book an on-farm demonstration today!

CLARKE & PULMAN AMBASSADOR
FARMING WITH AMY Welcome to our new feature, starring local farmer, Amy 'Ginge' Wilkinson. Amy gives us an insight into life on her Southport farm and her honest opinion on the latest farming equipment.
So, when I was thinking about how to introduce myself, I thought of the two questions I get asked by the farmer every time I go contract baling. As there will hopefully be a lot of farmers reading this, and other people too, fingers crossed, I thought it’s a good way to start. Question one – usually asked when I jump out the cab – probably because the last thing they expected was for a girl to appear. “Are you sure, you know what you are doing?” Driving a baler; yes, I do. Writing in a magazine however, I have no clue but here we are anyway. Question two. Being a red head, I can guarantee this question will always follow, “Does the temper match the hair?” The short answer is yes. Yes, it does.
10
Now we have got that out of the way I can move on to the usual introduction stuff… I am Amy Wilkinson and I farm with my Dad near Southport. We grow 285 Ha of arable crops and rear, through to finishing, around 550 beef cattle all bought in as dairy calves. We have been customers of Clarke & Pulman since they set up in 2003 and run Massey Ferguson’s and a JCB telehandler. The reason I have the pleasure of being published in this magazine is because I have recently become a Clarke & Pulman ambassador. So you may see me on C&P social media testing out kit and giving my honest opinion. As well, you’ll see me supporting C&P customers’ businesses through our new feature, #C&Psupportlocal.

DEMONSTRATOR REVIEW MASSEY FERGUSON 7360 COMBINE I know harvest feels a long way away, but it will arrive faster than we all want it to. The Massey Ferguson 7360 Combine is a newer version of what we already use on farm and we were lucky to use this demonstrator towards the end of September 2020. We found it to be everything we look for in a combine; efficient, well balanced, and compact enough to cause little compaction on our soils. One aspect we could not get over is how well this combine travels on wet ground. Harvest 2020, I think everyone can agree was a wash out, especially on our mossy Lancashire fields. But, this combine travelled on our wettest ground with little issue. I cannot do justice how wet these fields were and how astonished we were that this combine just kept going. It travelled better than our combine which we think travels well on our ground. The reason for this improved travel
we thought was because the back wheels follow the drive wheels perfectly. Whereas on our model, the back wheels scuff on the ruts made by the drive wheels if it starts to sink, making it difficult to carrying on moving. A simple but effective change. The demonstrator combine came with a 20 ft header, however we found that using our 18ft header was a better fit. The bigger header made the combine feel front heavy and we also found the new automatic reel speed feature worked better on our smaller header. In terms of efficiency with the smaller header we could increase the speed meaning we covered the same amount of ground as we would have with the bigger header. With increasingly wetter summers becoming the norm, maybe it’s time to start switching to smaller, more compact combines that can travel in these conditions such as this Massey Ferguson 7360.

Established in 1942, Huntapac Produce Ltd has become one of the most recognised vegetable growers and distributors in the UK. A taste of history The fourth-generation, familyowned company based in Tarleton, Lancashire was founded by William Hunter who started out his career by supplying fruit and vegetables to markets throughout Lancashire and Yorkshire. Mr Hunter began growing salads and brassicas, before moving on to root vegetable production in 1949. By 1974, Huntapac Produce had signed contracts with their first major distributor – Tesco. For the next 30 years, the ever-expanding company developed their production lines and increased their capacity. A growing concern What started out as a small fruit and vegetable-supplying venture, has grown to become a supplier of some of the largest supermarkets, as well as all levels of the food production chain from wholesale to catering and everything in between. The business now employs a 500 strong workforce, who are committed to producing and working to the very best standards. Huntapac Produce has a reputation of supplying quality to their customers, earning them a vast and ever-growing list of accreditations including Red Tractor Assurance, Waitrose Farming Partnership and The Assured Produce Scheme to name just a few.

A fan of the brand, Huntapac Produce have run Massey Ferguson tractors since the 1970’s and are known to have a fabulous collection of classic Massey Ferguson tractors and classic wagons. Fleet support across the UK The Clarke & Pulman service team have an important and significant role in keeping the operation working at an optimum level. With depots in Lancashire, Yorkshire and Shropshire, it is also vital that the back-up they receive is second to none and is available when they need it. An impressive collection With both build quality and productivity in mind, they chose
the latest S effect models, 6715 S Dyna-6, 7718 S Dyna-6 and Dyna-VT, MF7719 Dyna-VT and 8730 S Dyna-VT and they are currently waiting on the delivery of the brand new 8S.205 and 8S.245 Dyna E-Power tractors to complete their show stopping line-up. The reliability of the tractors, ease of operation and the advances in the Massey Ferguson technology are all major factors which influenced Huntapac Produce’s decision to run Massey Ferguson. Remote fleet management Huntapac Produce will utilise Massey Ferguson’s in-house telematic fleet management system – Massey Ferguson Connect – which allows the management team to track key information including location, performance, condition and status of every machine remotely and helps keep the fleet at maximum efficiency by allowing them to make informed operational decisions regarding their logistics in near real-time. PARTS GUIDE
THE PERFECT PARTS At Clarke & Pulman, we know that only the best parts will do to keep your machinery in tip-top condition. We stock genuine Kverneland parts which are made in the same factory as their ploughs, using a special heat process which makes them extremely hard-wearing and durable.
With over 135 years of expertise in the field of agricultural innovation, Kverneland has developed the knowledge and know-how when it comes to designing and manufacturing the very best in implements and parts. Kverneland is a long-standing supporter of the agricultural industry and its farming entrepreneurs - their slogan ‘farming means business’ encompasses the knowledge that in order for your business to thrive, a big part of your strategy is your investment in technology. They pride themselves on being able to offer efficient, high quality machinery and implements without the worry of a higher cost of ownership. Now exporting to over 80 countries across the globe, Kverneland is well known for its unique heat-treated metal, developed by their very own metallurgists. This special heat process works to reduce wear and friction by hardening and toughening the surface of the steel which makes implements like ploughs in particular extremely hard-wearing and durable. The hard exterior means that the steel is rigid on the surface allowing the soil to smoothly glide over the mouldboard and preventing the surface of the steel from holding on to the soil whilst also maintaining a soft core. This allows the metal to absorb shocks whilst cutting through the surface – a process also applied to points, shares and shins. When it comes to keeping your plough in full working order, choosing to use original parts that have been subjected to Kverneland’s unique heat process means that you will avoid the likelihood of breakage – something that you may get from using thicker steel – along with the increase in ground resistance and fuel consumption, resulting overall in less down time.

Valtra tractors can be built to individual specifications, tailored to the needs of your business. John Forrest tells us all about his new bespoke Valtra T194
16
Valtra tractors combine versatile features and innovative technology with outstanding comfort. As a Valtra owner, you’ll benefit from a reliable, high-quality tractor that has been tailored to meet the needs of your farm or contracting business. In 2018, John Forrest, a contractor from Longridge, Preston, requested a Valtra demo, after spotting them at a local agricultural show. Originally, he was drawn to the Valtra’s modern and distinctive looks, but soon realised that the quality ran much deeper than just the Valtra’s exterior. John and his wife Sharon own a local contracting business, Catterall and Forrest Contracting. They currently run two tractors, the Valtra T194 Versu and the T194 Direct. Predominantly, they mow,
rake and hedge cut, so when looking for a tractor they needed a versatile all-rounder, which they most definitely found in the T194. Each Valtra is bespoke, and built according to your individual specification. This meant John could add the features he needed without having to pay for unnecessary extras that he would never use. His Valtra’s are chosen and built for him and his team, ensuring that they can carry out their daily tasks efficiently. When looking at the specification of John’s two Valtra’s, you can clearly see that these tractors have been built to work. With front axle suspension, Valtra guide submetre, pneumatic brakes, work lights and so much more, they are the perfect tractor’s for Catterall and Forrest Contracting.
John particularly likes the interior cab features and creature comforts, right down to the integrated fridge. This has proved to be extremely useful. “Me and the team spend long days out at work. The fridge is a little luxury that makes the job that much easier, and it works unbelievably well," he added. John picked up his phone to show us the Valtra connect app. Showing us just the basics, its full potential is market leading. For John, this is a key piece of the Valtra experience. He knows the ins and outs of his tractor without having to physically look. It pre-empts problems should they arise, like low fuel for example, so that there are no delays, ensuring that they run efficiently and get the most out of each day.
JOHN COULD ADD THE FEATURES HE NEEDED WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY FOR UNNECESSARY EXTRAS THAT HE WOULD NEVER USE. HIS VALTRA’S ARE CHOSEN AND BUILT FOR HIM AND HIS TEAM, ENSURING THAT THEY CAN CARRY OUT THEIR DAILY TASKS EFFICIENTLY.
WHY DID JOHN CHOOSE CLARKE & PULMAN?
B O OK A DEMO TODAY
Initially, John came to Clarke & Pulman as they were a local and reputable Valtra dealer. Impressed with our overall approach to business, he has since delved a little deeper and has recently signed up to C&P’s Service+ contract. Along with the discount he will receive when servicing, he realises the value of a full service history that is recognised by Valtra and, in turn, withholding the Valtra warranty and increasing the resale value. “Your staff are specialists, they know the ins and outs of the tractors. They know if the machine needs an update and don’t just do the bare minimum work when servicing. It gives me peace of mind knowing that my tractor is in the hands of experts”, added John. “Put simply, we think the Valtra T194 is a reliable, high-quality tractor that has been superbly tailored to meet the needs of our contracting business. We wouldn’t change a single thing”, smiled John.

AUTOMOWERS FEATURE
BEFORE
AFTER
ROBOT REVOLUTION Husqvarna has been the world leader in robotic mowing since 1995. They are proud to have started the robotic revolution, and as long as there are lawns in need of care, they will make sure it never ends. The Automower is known for being extremely reliable, with a minimum of unexpected stops. Day and night, rain or shine, you can rely on it to be out there doing its job effortlessly. Today, more than 2 million gardens all over the world have a robotic mower from Husqvarna. Over and over, Automower has been ranked the highest performing product in external tests and surveys. We spoke to Will Hunter, who owns not one, but two Automowers to see if they lived up to the hype! Will has a large garden that he would spend two to three hours mowing every 10 days in the height

of summer. His Ride on mower was just taking too long. Those precious hours were being swallowed up with this monotonous task, and he wanted to take back control. He picked up the phone to Clarke & Pulman who recommended the Husqvarna Automower.
“The process of buying and setting up the Automower couldn’t have been easier. We’ve had it almost a year now and it’s a great time saving piece of kit. We forget it’s there to be honest, it doesn’t need any maintenance and just gets on with the job by itself,” Will explained.
Having used Husqvarna products previously, he knew it would be a wise investment. After a little research he took the plunge and ordered the 430X and the 315X. These specific mowers were recommended and selected by the Clarke & Pulman team after considering the size and layout of Will’s garden.
“It’s significantly more cost effective than a large petrol or diesel mower. With electricity being cheaper than fuel, and servicing costs set at just £60 annually, it’s a great move financially too. I actually sold my old ride on mower for more than the price of two of my new Automowers!”
Upon delivery, the Automower was set up by a Husqvarna Automower specialist from Clarke & Pulman. Within the day, boundaries had been laid, GPS activated, charging points set and the Automower was ready to go.
More importantly, Will has seen a huge improvement in the condition of his grass since using the Automower. His entire lawn now has a healthy and well-kept look with no moss or weed, just perfect green grass. Is that not what everybody wants?
