CONCEPT STATEMENT The new School of Biological Sciences expresses circulation as the main experiential factor of design. The circulation slices through and protrudes in and out of the main building form, creating dynamic spatial overlaps capturing important campus views. Along the way, there are programmed breaks for exhibition spaces to display research, providing visitors with the opportunity to learn and interact with the science of biology. The site design connects the building to existing campus walkways, promoting social interaction and sense of community. A large plaza space at the entry of the building is provided as well as smaller study areas and an outdoor classroom. Within the building, larger classrooms, lounging spaces, study spaces, virtual lab and computer lab are within the first floor. The beginning of the journey starts with the celebratory stair that leads up to a mezzanine overlooking the lobby. The path continues to go up to the second floor that is split into two half levels; one for the lecture hall and the other for classroom labs. The third floor holds all the research labs and animal labs, along with the end of the celebrated circulation that reveals a panoramic view of the main campus and quad.
