EDITORS NOTES

EDITORS THOUGHTS

As we head out of the summer and into a new season, the boots are laced up once again. At Thanet Football Magazine, we wish you a warm welcome back with our latest issue. The summer break may have given the players a chance to rest, but the action off the pitch has been just as lively.

The summer has given us charity matches, bringing our communities together and raising vital funds for local causes, behind the scenes transfer activity news from our local clubs, and an array of footballing stories to keep fans talking. We have seen some great pre-season friendlies, providing glimpses of fresh talent and new strategies, as managers reviewed and tested their squads and prepared themselves for the upcoming league and cup campaigns.

The spotlight is on for Ramsgate FC, whose promotion has earned them a place in the Premier Division. With a revamped squad and anticipation around future possibilities, the question remains, can they hold their own and make a mark in one of the toughest divisions in nonleague football?

Elsewhere across Thanet, teams have been busy strengthening their sides, unearthing young prospects, and making statement signings that could shape the season ahead. Whether it’s Margate’s continued focus on retention of their squad, or the steady progress of grassroots clubs climbing the ranks, the year ahead looks optimistic.

This issue covers the summer’s standout moments, player signings, behind-the-scenes updates, and a full look ahead at what promises to be a thrilling season for Thanet football.

THE DAY WAS THE 27TH JULY, THE VENUE SOUTHWOOD STADIUM, HOME OF RAMSGATE FC. THE MATCH WAS THE FIRST EVER THANET NORTH LONDON DERBY IN AID OF PILGRIMS HOSPICE.

We pulled together 2 teams of bitter rival fans of Arsenal and Tottenham and made it a local rivalry by playing a charity match. The match was for fans of both teams aged 38 and over from Thanet to have local bragging rights.

Both sides put together squads, and in front of around 300 football fans, we played the game. Arsenal Thanet was on top in the first half and took the lead after 17 minutes, Josh Kinsella with a lovely finish. Andrew Bailey then scored 2 good goals, and the lead stretched to 3-0 closing in the first half. But just before the half time whistle, the Tottenham side scored through James Elms to make it 3-1 going into the break.

Both teams came out for the second half and the game restarted, with chances at both ends, but nothing hitting the back of the net. Until, with around 25 minutes to go, Tottenham scored a goal through Barry Wise, and it was 3-2. Now things got a lot more interesting, and even more so when, with 18 minutes to go, out of nowhere, Barry scored again – leaving the score at 3-3 and the game was definitely on.

More end to end attacks, and it was up for grabs, but then the ball fell to Adam Hobbs and he curled a lovely shot into the far corner, and Arsenal got back in front. Arsenal then broke through with only minutes to go, and after good work down the right, the ball was squared. Mitchell Hughes was in the right place after a late run into the box to put the game to bed, and Arsenal Thanet run out 5-3 winners on what was a great day all round.

The amount raised from the day was £1113.71 and the Pilgrims Hospice was really pleased.

We would like to thank everyone who came to support the match; both teams who took part, Lee Strutt for sorting the Tottenham team out, Albert Finnegan and Lance Riordan for helping me out with organising the Arsenal team and other things needed, Ramsgate football club for letting us play the match there, and Thanet Football Magazine for helping promote it before and for this article now.

WE HOPE TO DO SOMETHING AGAIN NEXT SUMMER AND HOPE IT WILL BE AS SUCCESSFUL.

THE LIBERTINES - PETE DOHERTY

THE LIBERTINES FRONT

MAN MADE HIS DEBUT AFTER SIGNING FOR MARGATE FC OFFICIALLY IN THE ‘GATES FIRST PRESEASON GAME AGAINST TONBRIDGE ANGELS.

Ahead of The Libertines’ hometown gig at Dreamland, front man Pete Doherty showed his footballing ability at Hartsdown Park in front of a large crowd of Margate supporters and Libertines fans.

Pete was seen signing autographs before the game and taking selfies with fans. It was also the launch of the new home and away Margate strips, hosting the lead sponsors (The Libertines) logo on the front. The shirts were selling fast, with queues for the club shop stretching the length of the pitch.

Pete was also seen in the supporter’s kiosk with an issue of Thanet Football Magazine in hand and promoting the Margate Official Supporters Club. He was also trying to sell everything, including an old lamp that was in the kiosk. No luck there though unfortunately.

TFM owner caught up with Pete ahead of the game and suggested he should leave his hat on whilst playing... and he did! (pictured left) …for the entire 20 seconds he was on the pitch before being substituted.

AT DREAMLAND - MARGATE

DREAMLAND WAS A SEA OF MARGATE FC KITS AS THE LIBERTINES SELLOUT HOMETOWN GIG CROWD (ON THE 5TH JULY 2025), SAW A HOST OF OLD AND NEW KITS BOASTING THE LIBERTINES SPONSORSHIP ON THE FRONT. PETE WAS ALSO SEEN WITH HIS MATCH-WORN SHIRT DRAPED OVER THE SPEAKERS AS HE SANG TO THE LARGE CROWD.

RUSSEL’S THOUGHTS:

“I had the privilege of attending The Libertines concert after watching Pete’s debut for The ‘Gate. The atmosphere was buzzing, and the amount of Margate shirts in the crowd was unreal. Everywhere you looked there was a Margate shirt, ranging from the new kits to the old, and the limited-edition kits with the concert date on the front. Shirts were also on sale at the venue, with huge queues waiting to get their hands on this souvenir from a brilliant show. “

MINSTER FOOTBALL CLUB

SO, ANOTHER SEASON IS UPON US – ALTHOUGH FOR OUR FIRST TEAM IT STARTED VERY EARLY, IN THE FIRST WEEKEND OF AUGUST. THANET FOOTBALL MAGAZINE HAS ENJOYED A SHORT BREAK AND SO HERE WE GO!

We start this Minster FC update with news of our latest additions for the 2025/26 season as the club continues to grow. Our first piece of news is the arrival of the Minster FC Women’s team, who will play in the South East Counties Women’s Football League (SECWFL). This is a brilliant addition to our football family as we push to provide football opportunities for all in East Kent. The team will be managed by Steph Meek, who some of you may know from her previous time at Margate FC. Steph has worked really hard behind the scenes arranging sessions and getting this team off the ground, and we are really happy to have her on board as part of the club leadership. Paige Godden is the Head Coach and has known Steph for many years on their football journeys, from playing to coaching. Steph and Paige are also supported by two coaches who have been part of Minster FC for some time. Andy Long has kept goal for all our adult teams across the years, and Nelson Were is also one of our youth team coaches. The team will play at Minster Recreation Ground, mostly on Sunday afternoons. For me personally, this represents a huge step for Minster FC, and the return of women’s football to Minster after the days in the 1960s - with our first female team, and then the emergence of the Thanet Bluebirds from this team in the 70’s. We welcome Steph and Paige to the club and look forward to seeing the women’s section grow.

Our youth team structure has expanded by a net total of one team. With our U18’s team of last year finishing at the end of the season, we thank Tony and Vicki Haswell for the huge efforts they have put into their team as they have

grown into the young men that we have been proud to have at Minster FC. Thanks also go to Andy and Brian who have also supported the team in the last few seasons.

We therefore have 2 additional teams this season, as James Wells joins the club following his years at Chandler Wells FC. James had developed his own club over the past 7 years, and had provided football for over 50 local youngsters, but had felt it was the right time to join Minster FC and bring players along that wanted to join our football family. As a result, two youth teams have been established in the U15 and U16 age groups. The U15’s will play their football in the Faversham & District Youth Football League (FDYFL) and this will mostly be on Saturday mornings at The Rec. With James overseeing this group, he will have coaches Andy Hardy and Rob McWilliam supporting the lads on their new journey with Minster FC. James will also manage the new U16’s who will play mostly on Sunday afternoons in the East Kent Youth Football League.

Continuing from previous seasons, the multi-talented Nelson Were takes his lads into U16’s football too, as they continue in the FDYFL on Saturday mornings. Nelson has his son Tiggy and other young coaches, Will and Ollie, to help this young group continue to enjoy their football. With Nelson also helping the new women’s team as well as continuing to provide some amazing photography of all our teams, we are lucky to have another multi-tasker at the club.

IAN WALLACE

MINSTER FIRST TEAM MANAGER

LAINE BURRETT

MINSTER 1911 MANAGER

The final piece of our youth team jigsaw is our U18’s, who will continue to play in the Kent Youth League under the guidance of manager Russell Wilson and his coaches Andrew Weatherley and Andy Walker. This will be their first of 2 years in this age group as they take the jump from U16’s of last season - and we have already seen some of the lads enjoying some training with the adults, and certainly holding their own at this level. We look forward to seeing the lads progress into the last few seasons of youth team football as we start to welcome them to the adults’ teams.

Our veterans’ team – the Minster FC Old Boys – were promoted to Division 1 of The Len Martin Thanet & District Football League for this season. Under the guidance of Club Secretary Steve Farbrace, this over-35’s team will soon get their season under way. It should be noted that Steve is a player manager and often brings himself on to score the odd screamer or two! We are now reaching that point where the youngsters that I managed as first team players back in the late 2000’s are playing for the veterans team –just to make me feel that little bit older.

Onto the senior teams, where we continue where we left off last season, with three adults men’s teams. The 3rd team – known as Minster FC 1911 – saw the Canterbury & District League divide back into 2 divisions, and they remain in the Premier Division of that league. A young squad from last season has seen more youngsters join the group who are managed by Laine Burrett. Laine has a lot of experience of youth football and had stepped into coaching adults’ football with us last season for large parts of the year. We welcome him back in a full-time capacity as he continues to develop the younger lads in the CDFL.

The Reserves team had been promoted into the Kent County Football League Division 1 C&E two seasons ago, when a spare place opened up following their 3rd place finish in Division 2 the season before. A mid-table finish in that first year was improved upon last season, much to the efforts of manager Elliot “Beardo” Austin in his first season at the club. Another coach who has stepped up from local

youth team management into adults’ football, and his vast experience of coaching and managing young players has helped us integrate many youngsters from across Thanet into our club. We are seeing the natural progression from youth to adults’ teams and also pushing to the first team level, which is great to see.

So finally, we come to the first team who – as mentioned earlier – started their season on 2nd August with a good win against Bexley at their new home ground of Hartsdown Park, Margate. As you may have read in TFM or online before, we have entered into a ground share agreement with Margate FC for our first team to play their home matches at HDP. This will provide us with at least one criteria ticked off for any future application and promotion to the South Counties East Football League (SCEFL). We continue with the same leadership team of Ian Wallace as manager, Liam Morris as his assistant, and Club Secretary Steve Farbrace providing matchday support. Having finished 2nd, 4th, and then 2nd again in our previous 3 seasons in the KCFL topflight, we continue to knock on the door of promotion as we look to ensure that we are ready both on and off the pitch for higher levels of the football ladder. The season so far has been good – we remain undefeated after 5 matches, although we have dropped some points with a couple of draws. We have seen some new faces in the first team squad, with players moving upwards from the reserves as well as some new arrivals to the club – although the core of the squad remains familiar. It is sometimes easy to forget how young most of the squad are and how long they have been together.

We continue to deal with what I describe as ‘growing pains’, as the club wants to move upwards in the immediate future, but also keep on eye on the long term. The next steps are to build upon our committee and volunteers’ group to help sustain the growth and look further into the crystal ball as to how we can improve our facilities within and around Minster to keep our growing family together.

THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR ! … AND PLEASE FEEL FREE TO GET IN TOUCH IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN JOINING US ON OUR JOURNEY.

NEWS UPDATE

RAMSGATE ARRIVE IN THE ISTHMIAN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION, FOLLOWING THEIR TRIUMPHANT CAMPAIGN AS SOUTH EAST DIVISION CHAMPIONS IN 2024–25. THEIR PROMOTION MARKS A SIGNIFICANT STEP UP, STIRRING OPTIMISM AMONG FANS AND THE WIDER CLUB COMMUNITY.

Heading into the new season, manager Ben Smith has clearly looked to keeping the squad together. While key figures like Joe Taylor, Lee Martin, and Joe Ellul have departed, most of the title-winning squad have stayed put, signing on for the new season to provide both security and squad stability.

Smith has been busy recruiting a few new signings. New arrivals, such as Mitchell May, Donvieve Jones, and Raphe Brown, have joined the team for the new season. Anthony Grant also joined the Rams - an experienced midfielder with over 500 Football League and National League appearances – at the start of July. A strong addition to an already well-oiled squad.

Ramsgate’s pre-season began with a commanding 4–0 win over Faversham Strike Force on 8th July. They followed this with a narrow 2–0 victory against Deal Town on 26 July, maintaining a confident build-up to the league campaign.

The Rams looked impressive in their season opener at home against Whitehawk FC claiming a 3-2 victory, and it looks like the momentum from winning the league has carried over into the prem.

MARGATE FC - NEW SEASON

NEWS UPDATE

WRITTEN ON 23RD AUGUST 2025

IT’S BEEN A WHILE. FOUR MONTHS SINCE OUR LAST UPDATE IN THE MAGAZINE, BUT I’M VERY GRATEFUL TO BE IN THE SAME POSITION AND PASSING ON THE INS-AND-OUTS OF MARGATE FOOTBALL CLUB TO THE COMMUNITY OF THANET.

After defeat in the playoff semi-final, where we felt we had the upper hand, we just didn’t finish our chances when we were on top, it was all about picking everyone up again and building for the new season. Credit to Burgess Hill for carrying on and winning the final. It always makes it a little easier knowing you lost to the team that got promoted, plus how well they’ve started in the league above too. It just proves the levels we all set last season.

KANE HAYSMAN NEW SIGNING

“IT’S IMPORTANT FOR US TO REMAIN POSITIVE WITH THE PROCESS AND CONTINUE TO IMPROVE GAME BY GAME UNTIL WE HIT THE LEVELS WE WANT TO BE AT”

We acted quickly in the summer and got all the players that we wanted on board and committed to another challenge with ourselves and showing loyalty to us and the football club, which in non-league is hard to come by nowadays. Our relationship with Ricky and the board was a vital part in this, as it seems we were, and are still, on the same pathway of trying to progress the football cluband I’m very excited to continue this relationship and help and offer my expertise wherever we can, as we see the football club taking steps in the right direction too. The one player that was a tough one to see go was Harvey Brand. We probably didn’t quite get the best out of Harvey for the final couple of months, where he was out injured, and also with a new job, that things just couldn’t correlate to make things happen for next season. But after how he started last season, he would always be a tough player to replace.

In all honesty, we only made two new signings - Ben Wells from Hastings and Kieron Agbebi from Dover. However, after boosting our squad in the final couple of months of last season, it felt like Eman Oke, TT Walters, Sam Blackman and Tom Derry were all new signings too. Plus having Max Walsh for his first preseason with us!

We also added Finn Saunders, Loui Hoxha and Reggie Oboagye from the youth system, and all have put in maximum effort with the group and deserved to be a part of it. All three players are still very young, and I look forward to helping progress them in at the right time but also to ensure we are continuing to develop their games. Hopefully we can continue to see more names, especially after being part of the Challenge the First Team day, where I got the opportunity to coach so many younger players in Thanet. As time goes on, and if I’m still at the club in 4 or 5 years, then it would be brilliant to try and integrate them too. It’s something I’ve done at Dartford for 8 years now, where we have had a seriously high amount of access to promoting and developing youth players to be ready - and I look forward to helping with the challenge to do the same with players from Thanet!

Everything went in the right direction in pre-season, with some good results against Dulwich and Concord at home, and some really testing away fixtures, which certainly didn’t feel like friendlies.

That took us into our first game against newly promoted Jersey, on a scorching hot day with a 1pm kick off, and this ended up being a pretty flat performance in general and a frustrating draw against a team that defended very well.

“WE

WILL CONTINUE TO RISE TO THE CHALLENGES PLACED UPON US AND DO ALL OF THE FANS AT MARGATE FC PROUD”

Tuesday night then saw Sittingbourne away and for sure, for a spectator, this was possibly the ugliest game of football to watch - and slightly frustrating where we could have finished a few chances towards the end, to come away with what would be a great point at their ground. The FA cup draw seemed kind, playing against a team from the league below, but the more questions asked about them, the more answers we got about how strong they were for step 5. We found that out, but it was in our hands until the 91st minute, and again, a poor first half in the replay let us down on this occasion.

With another away game and our seventh out of seven cup draws, all of which being away from home, we managed to kickstart our season with a brilliant performance on the road at a difficult place to get wins against, Egham Town. Our first clean sheet, a strong first half, and an organised performance was exactly what we needed to ensure the positivity remains, which leads to progression as a group. We now head to Ashford and Merstham away again in the league, proving how difficult the start is, but we look forward to these challenges and know that we will continue to work hard to get performances to the levels we want, and need too!

We have had to make changes to our squad quicker than we had planned but adapting and acting quickly in nonleague is key, especially when players that we have been watching over the last year become available. Things just didn’t quite work out for Ben, which we are gutted about, but things ended in a healthy manner and we both thanked each other. This led to the signing of Kane who will add a lot of quality to our play in the final third and challenge the whole front line for goals and assists, so we are really looking forward to integrating him into the team!

These first couple of months are incredibly difficult, as for all teams it is so hard to gain any momentum with the amount of early cup games, but it is important for us to remain positive with the process and continue to improve game-by-game until we hit the levels we want to be at. We now continue to have four more away games in the next five, but when I’m sure we are a team, like all of last season, we will continue to rise to the challenges placed upon us and do all of the fans at Margate FC proud.

HAVE YOU GOT THE BALLS?

HI! I’M AND IN OCTOBER 2024, MYSELF AND MY BEST MATE CURTIS VINSON-HAMS FOUNDED ‘HAVE YOU GOT THE BALLS?’ - A TESTICULAR HEALTH AWARENESS AND FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN WHOSE AIM IS TO HELP MEN CHECK THEIR MANHOOD WITH CONFIDENCE AND REDUCE THE STIGMA AROUND TESTICULAR CANCER AND THE HEALTH OF THEIR PLUMS.

NIALL ASHMORE CO-FOUNDER ‘HAVE YOU GOT THE BALLS?’

FOUNDERS STORY

Our story began back in May 2024, after Curtis started to become concerned after he noticed a large lump appear in his testicles a few weeks before his wedding (great timing!)… Little did he know this would be the start of his own battle with the big C, and after various tests, he was diagnosed with Stage 1 Seminoma pT1b Testicular Cancer in July. He typically didn’t see a doctor immediately (an awful trend that most guys, me included, seem to follow) but thankfully, it was caught in the earlier stages and he underwent treatment over the summer and a successful surgery to remove the tumour and testicle itself. He was quickly back to full health but is now under medical surveillance for the next 5 years, and despite having to undergo fertility care, he welcomed his first child into the world last month!

A few months went by and after a commute to work brainwave one morning, the idea of ‘Have You Got The Balls?’ was born, and Curtis was able to share his story.

3 BALLS, 2 GUYS, 1 AIM

Through raising awareness of the symptoms, the importance of early detection, and sharing information on a usually taboo topic through a lot of ballsy conversation, we’re hopefully turning a serious issue into something you can openly talk about.

It really shocks you the amount of other like-minded guys who have had similar experiences with testicular health, and the lack of confidence they have when it comes to speaking to others about it. Since starting the campaign we’ve had a good number of friends approach us and let us know that, because of the movement we started, they became more aware of the information surrounding testicular health and got themselves checked – potentially saving their lives.

Not only did we want to increase the awareness of such an important topic, but we were both super keen to raise as much money as possible for causes that were close to both of our hearts! Curtis’ first ‘HYGTB?’ Challenge saw him knock out over 150km in the month of November, running 5k a day. In the process raising over £1400 for Movember.

Next up, we arranged our first Quiz Night at the start of the year and raffled some great prizes from local businesses - racking up another £1000 for our main 2025 fundraiser, Orchid, the UKs leading mens cancer charity - who provide awareness, education and incredible support for those effected by male specific cancers.

After these hugely successful fundraisers and knocking on nearly £2500, we’re hoping our next fundraising drive can spread the word of what we’re doing and how important testicular self-examinations and speaking to your friends, family, and most importantly a doctor, about your issues is! Our Summer events this year consist of our entry into our first half marathon, with myself and Curt taking on ‘The Big Half’ – 21km through the heart of London! And whilst both of us are in prep mode for the race, what better time to host our first HYGTB Community Football Match at Ramsgate’s Southwood Stadium on the 24th August! Curtis will be captaining Thanet Fire FC – made up of Firefighters from around the Isle and supporting The Fire Fighters Charity, something close to Curtis’ heart after they helped him throughout his recovery over the past year. Whilst I captain the Have You Got The Balls? XI.

CURTIS VINSON-HAMS

CO-FOUNDER ‘HAVE YOU GOT THE BALLS?’

CHARITY GAME - MATCH REPORT 1-2

What turned out to be an amazing sun-soaked Sunday, allowed Curtis and his Fire Service team to take home the win! With both teams looking to start strong, the Captains fielded attacking lineups of players of all ages, with some serious talent on show and some who hadn’t even kicked a football in 15 years!

A breakthrough goal came for HYGTB? Ollie Jackson, after a bouncing ball fell kindly, the lad, who has never played a match in his life, took one touch and volleyed home a weak foot finish in some style!

The game was brought back to level pegging when a Tom Walmsley free kick was placed neatly into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. The goal scorer continued dictating things up top, with Andy Hadden pulling the strings from midfield for TFFC.

And despite a superb defensive effort from HYGTB’s Jack Brill and some pressure up the other end from Dan Vinson, a second goal came on the counterattack. Sam March dispatching a TFFC break expertly into the far corner to take it to 2-1.

With efforts from both ends still flying - a late tackle brought down Vinson in the box… and as a result of some serious peer pressure, up stepped Niall to the penalty spot. Clattering his effort off the crossbar to the delight of the 100+ people in attendance - a head in hands moment!

No further goals for either team as legs began to tire… but some great performances out there none the less. With MOTM awards being shared between TFFC’s Dave White after a solid stint between the sticks, whilst HYGTB’s Brad Attwood took home an absolutely deserved recognition for a Maldini esq’ 90 minutes at CB.

A MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS TO CURTIS AND THE THANET FIRE FC TEAM FOR TAKING HOME THE WIN AT THE FIRST HAVE YOU GOT THE BALLS COMMUNITY CHARITY MATCH. WE CAN’T THANK EVERYONE ENOUGH FOR THEIR DONATIONS AND HOPEFULLY WE CAN CONTINUE THIS AS A YEARLY TRADITION GOING FORWARD INTO 2026!

ALL FUNDS RAISED ON THE DAY WILL BE SPLIT BETWEEN ORCHID AND THE FIRE FIGHTERS CHARITY! WHILST OUR JUST GIVING PAGE, WHICH CAN BE FOUND ON OUR INSTAGRAM AND FACEBOOK PAGES (@HAVEYOUGOTTHE), WILL BE TOTALLING OUR HALF MARATHON FUNDS AND GOING TOWARDS OUR 2025 TOTAL FOR ORCHID.

BUSY SUMMER

FOR BAYPOINT FC

IT’S BEEN A BUSY TIME AT BAYPOINT FC THIS SUMMER.

It’s been a busy time at Baypoint FC this summer. New teams have arrived. Welcome to new Men’s Reserves and new U18s, and we look forward to working with them. For those players and managers that have departed to new ventures, we wish you all well in the coming season.

We’re pleased to announce Baypoint FC have been awarded Kent Youth League status. This has given us a great opportunity for our U13 team, managed by Dan Barters, to embark on a recruitment campaign ahead of starting their first season in KYL in September. Training has been going well; the team have played a number of friendlies to prepare themselves for the step up. We wish them well and in a future issue, we will catch up with Dan and his team.

We also moved our Wildcats to Saturday mornings 9-10am. A free session for girls, ages 5-11. We’ve already set up an U10 Girls team through Wildcats and this session is aimed at bringing football to the increasing number of girls interested in the game after the success of the Lionesses. This is a great session where we have fun drills, develop skills so girls enjoy the game we love.

Also, this summer we’ve seen the reintroduction of our Baypoint Tots session on Saturday mornings, 9-10am. The Tots session is for children ages 18 months to 6 years old, a great session aimed at kids having fun, making friends, whilst developing skills through drills and fun games.

The tots session is £2.

Baypoint FC are proud of their Tots & Wildcats sessions. To continue our pathway to Youth Teams, we are extremely proud of our Saturday Development Centre, which has been key to providing players to our Youth Teams over the past 3 years.

The Development Centre runs 10-11am every Saturday morning. Players who attend the centre are developed by FA Qualified coaches. Players are drilled weekly on patterns of play; they work on their passing, shooting, fitness, and communication, whilst having fun at the same time. We will develop and assess players ability prior to moving to a youth team.

The Centre is a key part in our pathway, and we aim to get new players into teams by inviting youth team managers to attend the centre so they see the player first hand.

The centre is open to boys and girls. Sessions are £4.

MEN'S FIRST TEAM

Our men’s first team have enjoyed a successful preseason, playing 6 games against competitive opponents. It’s been a great opportunity for manager, Jamie Willis, to look at new players, test formations, and get his mind set on his squad for the coming season. Jamie announced his squad recently. We wish them well for their 25/26 season.

Baypoint FC ran a successful summer camp in August. Over 20 children attended over the 4 days, where they embarked on various fitness drills, skills sessions, competitions, and mini matches. Friendships were made and competitions were lively and fun packed. We aim to do it again in October.

EMMA URQUHART CUP CHARITY GAME

ON THE HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR UP TO THAT POINT, 28TH JUNE SAW MARGATE FC WELCOME THE EMMA URQUHART CUP TO HARTSDOWN PARK FOR THE FIRST TIME. NO CLOUDS. NO BREEZE. BUT A QUIET BUZZ AROUND THE GROUND AS VOLUNTEERS FROM BOTH THE REACH OUT AND RECOVER (ROAR) AND FORWARD TRUST TEAMS PREPARED FOR THE MATCH.

and bring hope to the many who still suffer in our communities.

The Emma Urquhart Cup, first hosted last year in Ashford, is a match that honours a life lived in recovery from addiction, cut short too soon, hosted by organisations working tirelessly across our county to combat the stigma surrounding addiction
FEATURING ARSENAL LEGEND TONY ADAMS VS

MATCH DAY

The ROAR Kent side arrived at the ground early and orange shirts were laid out in the dressing room ready for the pre-match warm up, whilst in the next room, The Forward Trust side would later be putting on blue kits for the day.

With the heat in mind, warm-ups were kept light and it was back in to the changing rooms where the smell of deep heat & sun cream hung in the air as the players dressed for kick off.

This year the match was made extra special by the appearance of former Arsenal & England Captain Tony Adams in Forward Trust blue. Adams laced his boots for the first time in 20 years in aid of the cause, which is especially close to his heart.

Having personal experience of addiction and now having found over 29 years of recovery, he’s keen to be able to pass that on to others, and he has recently stepped in to the role of Chair of Trustees at the Forward Trust.

Event organisers ROAR were particularly grateful to have him join for the day, feeling strongly that the visible recovery of a household name such as Adams, could have significant impact upon the stigma surrounding addiction, as well as it being a great experience for those with the opportunity to play alongside him.

FIRST HALF

The whistle blew and last years’ winners, ROAR, came out like a side defending more than just a trophy. They pressed high, snapping into tackles, forcing mistakes. Within five minutes, their winger skipped past two defenders and whipped in a low cross that was scrambled away just in time.

Forward Trust settled, playing through Adams at the back, who was shouting constant instructions. The veterans presence was calming, and they began to hold more possession.

Fifteen minutes in, ROAR struck. A quick one-two on the right flank caught Forward off guard, the ball was squared across the box, and their striker met it first-time into the bottom left corner, with spectators and players alike celebrating wildly.

Forward responded well, with their No. 10 dropping deep to collect the ball and link play. Twice they went close - a glancing header that kissed the bar, and a curling effort from 20 yards that had ROAR’s keeper scrambling.

By this point it was becoming clear that the heat was significantly impacting some of the players and at the first drinks break, a decision was taken to implement rolling substitutions, a decision which both teams would make good use of throughout the rest of the afternoon’s proceedings.

EMMA URQUHART CUP

SECOND-HALF

WHY THIS MATCH MATTERS

After the interval, Forward came out with renewed purpose. Whatever the manager had said at half time really put some extra energy into his team and just ten minutes in, they levelled.

Their winger darted down the left, cut inside, and slid a pass between two defenders for their striker to tuck past the keeper. 1-1, and the momentum had shifted.

The game opened up. ROAR’s No. 11 had the Forward keeper diving full-stretch and was denied a certain goal from close range.

By the 85th minute, the heat had slowed legs, but not minds. ROAR’s captain was urging his team forward, Forward’s midfield barking at each other to ‘hold shape’.

Full time came at 1–1. Penalties would decide it.

THE SHOOTOUT

No matter what level you are playing at, the pressure of the penalty shootout remains the same, and this game was no different. ROAR went first - goal. Forward replied - goal.

Second round: goal, goal. Third: ROAR scored, Forward blazed over. ROAR kept their nerve.

When their fourth penalty slammed into the net, it was over. 4–3 on penalties. ROAR champions again.

Their players collapsed into each other, trophy lifted high, water bottles emptied over heads. Players from both sides however, left the pitch smiling, with one saying “The match couldn’t have been tighter, much better than the 13-0 last year. But you know what? Recovery is the real winner today.”

The Emma Urquhart Cup commemorates Emma, whose work with Forward Trust and ROAR changed lives, and her story of recovery, service, and resilience, continues to do so.

As ROAR’s Calum Smith put it,

“WE JUST WANT TO RAISE AWARENESS AND REDUCE THE STIGMA SO PEOPLE CAN GET HELP.”

To be held annually moving forward, the team at ROAR hope that through this event and their other work, they can continue to reach those people who continue to wrestle with addiction and are in need in our community.

“THIS IS A SEASON FULL OF OPTIMISM AND POSITIVITY, AND I WANT TO EXTEND AN INVITE TO FANS, OR ANYONE INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING THE GROWTH OF THE GAME, TO COME AND SUPPORT THE TEAM!”

NEW MARGATE WOMEN’S MANAGER

GEORGE ADAMS

“THIS SEASON REALLY DOES FEEL LIKE A STEP FORWARD RATHER THAN A FRESH START. “

Having been the number two all last season, I already know the players well, and they know what to expect with me, so we are in a good position to now build on the foundations we laid last season. Last year we grew so much as a group, firstly on the cohesion of the team, but mainly in a sense of playing style. We have a real identity about us, and that’s something I’m personally proud of - as it took a lot of work last season to introduce our way of playing to the girls. Ultimately, I am really grateful to be given this opportunity and can’t wait for the season to start!

NEW MARGATE WOMEN’S MANAGER

This is certainly a significant step in my own coaching journey, and has maybe come earlier than expected, but I feel prepared. It is nice to see the belief and faith the club have in me to be offered this role at 20 years old. I am lucky enough to have spent the majority of my life around high-level coaches as a player, and have certainly taken a lot of learning from that. The period I was in and around the Men’s First Team at Margate as a player was really beneficial for my coaching progress as I was involved with three different managers, so was able to pick up what was working and what wasn’t, specifically around team culture and togetherness, and take that into my own approach to management. I have been coaching since 16, so despite being young, I’m not inexperienced but do recognise there’s still a lot to learn, and I’m looking forward to doing that. For myself, and all my players, everything is about

There is so much potential in women’s football, and it is a game that will continue to grow every year, so it’s an exciting time to be spearheading that growth at Margate. We are fortunate that we a have strong youth setup, and have several youth graduates already in the first team. I enjoy being part of their individual footballing journey because some have real potential to play at a very high standard as they continue to progress, so whatever I can do to help them get there is an achievement in itself. A really important opportunity we have at Margate Women is to support the community. Almost all our players are from, or based in, Thanet, with perhaps the furthest being

“I

AM AN AMBITIOUS COACH WHO WANTS TO BE AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL I AM CAPABLE OF, AND I WANT THE SAME FOR MY PLAYERS.”

My current goals for the team are as simple as winning the next game. I’m not really a coach who likes to put too much pressure on titles and trophies, as football is so unpredictable and ever-changing. That doesn’t mean we aren’t ambitious, we really are, and I would be lying if I said promotion wasn’t in the back of my mind as I do think we have the quality to challenge. But, right now, it’s about getting the squad to fully understand what we want to see from them in our playing style, whilst growing that positivity and togetherness through the whole group. I feel we have made good progress with this over preseason, but there’s still more to do. We need to have a strong work ethic this year, which the players and my coaching team all understand. The same expectations we put on the players, I place on myself and the rest of the coaching staff tenfold.

Talk is cheap and there’s no good in simply saying we want to challenge for titles and work hard, you have to grab that opportunity and do everything you can to achieve it. We aren’t coaches who will put pressure on players to not make mistakes. We want our players to take risks, and as long as you control what you can, in terms of work ethic and understanding information, then we encourage them to keep pushing themselves and to want the ball regardless.

This new role really fits well with my own personal journey. I always want to learn, and this is something I am doing every day at Margate. I am an ambitious coach who wants to be at the highest level I am capable of, and I want the same for my players. I naturally have a very modern outlook on the game, and I want people to enjoy watching us play, so I hope to provide a good experience for our fans and hopefully grow the women’s game in Thanet!

We are still seeking some sponsorship to help the team grow off the pitch and we would appreciate anyone interested to have a conversation with me. But ultimately, I am very excited and grateful for this opportunity.

SUNDAY LEAGUE NEW BOYS

BIRCHINGTON FOOTBALL CLUB

BIRCHINGTON FC IS A NEWLY FORMED, YOUNG AND AMBITIOUS TEAM COMPETING IN DIVISION 2 OF THE THANET SUNDAY LEAGUE.

THEY’RE CURRENTLY UNBEATEN AND PROUDLY PLAY OUR HOME GAMES AT BIRCHINGTON REC.

The idea to form the club came from our 6-a-side team in Margate and a tight-knit group of mates who all share a passion for football. There were too many of us to join an existing team, so we decided to start our own. The club was founded by Sidney Long and Jasper Marsh, but it’s been a real team effort to get things off the ground.

We’ve all grown up together - same schools, same teams - and that chemistry shows on the pitch. More than just teammates, we’re a proper group of mates.
