CLUB CHAIRMAN History. Firsts. It keeps happening.

Our first appearance at Step 6 in the SCEFL Division One. Our first appearance - and win - in the FA Vase.

And then our first league point earned at this level with Wednesday night’s draw at Lydd Town. Three moments of history in the first 12 days of the season.

It’s a strange thing to try and put into words. Watching this club go through it all reminds me of my early days of being a dad and ticking off the milestones — first steps, first day at school, first time they fall off the bike and get straight back on. Except we’re well past the toddler stage at Minster FC (and at home of course).

This season, Minster FC feels like it is reaching its teenage years : slightly out of control, not quite the finished article, facing up to bigger challenges, but growing fast and exciting to watch!

There will - no doubt - be more of these moments in the coming months ahead at this new level. But every first is a marker in the ground - proof of where we are, and how far we’ve come to get here. One of our current messages to the management and players is to make sure we take a step back and enjoy these moments – a bit like when the kids are growing up of course.

This week we welcome referee Kayden and his assistants Mark and Connor to Hartsdown Park for the first time this season – they have been here before of course.

We also welcome James and his Tooting Bec squad, who play their home games at Chipstead FC’s NRT Stadium - safe travels back down the road afterwards.

And to everyone here today – welcome back, thank you for your support and thank you for helping us raise the kids!

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome back to Hartsdown Park for today’s SCEFL Division 1 fixture against Tooting Bec! We extend a warm greeting to the players, management team, officials, and supporters who have joined us today.

I write these notes late on Wednesday night following our midweek fixture away to Lydd Town. Lydd is always a difficult venue to visit, demanding real character and resilience, and the squad showed both to secure a hard-earned 1–1 draw, our first points at this level. Defending well in the first half against a strong wind, we took the lead through a fine finish from Zack Jobe, who latched onto a great pass from Jake Coltham-Lai and lobbed the goalkeeper to make it 1–0. Lydd equalised with two minutes to play in the half through a well-taken finish from the edge of the box, but we controlled large parts of the second half as we pressed for a winner. The fact that there is a slight hint of frustration at not taking all three points speaks volumes about the standard of performance.

It was a true squad effort, demonstrating all the characteristics we will need this season in abundance, and we were very proud of the performance in taking our first league points, which we will look to build on today.

Looking back to last Saturday, it was a truly historic afternoon for everyone associated with Minster FC as we took our very first steps onto the national stage in the Isuzu FA Vase. To mark our debut in a national competition with a dominant 4–0 victory over Dial Square FC was incredible enough, but to do so in front of a brilliant crowd of nearly 200 supporters made it a day that will live long in the memory. Your backing in the stands was sensational, and the atmosphere you created really set the standard for what we want Hartsdown Park to be all season long.

On the pitch against Dial Square, the team set the tempo right from the opening whistle. Just five minutes in, a fluent, incisive move down the left flank involving Zack Jobe and Harry Hobday allowed Ollie Harris to slot home the opener and get us off to the dream start.

Ollie in doubled our lead ten minutes into the second half, nodding in his second from a corner. Our threat down that left wing paid off again shortly after when another sharp team move saw Jake Munday fire home our third from just inside the box to put the tie firmly out of reach.

To cap off a remarkable performance, Ollie completed a fantastic hat-trick deep into injury time.

It was a goal born from pure sharpness: our young goalkeeper, Dane Bough, showed great awareness after claiming the ball in his penalty area, quickly releasing a route-one ball forward for Ollie to race onto and seal his treble. On a personal note for Ollie, that hat-trick performance led to another milestone for our club, as he became our first-ever player to be named in the KentOnline Team of the Week!

these last two matches has been immense. Now, however, the focus shifts back to the task at hand in our SCEFL Division 1 campaign. Tooting Bec arrive today with plenty of quality and will present another stern test, so we must bring that exact same focus, discipline, and hunger to the pitch today to keep our unbeaten momentum building.

To pair four clinical goals and an individual hat-trick, with a resolute clean sheet shows the exact standard and intensity this squad is capable of producing when we hit our stride. The reward for that victory is a tie in the next round, where we will test ourselves against SCEFL Premier Division opposition in Kennington this September.

Looking further ahead, our next fixture following today’s game will see us host Greenways here at Hartsdown Park on Bank Holiday Monday, 31st August. With Bank Holiday football always bringing fantastic local energy, we hope to see yet another big crowd through the turnstiles to get behind the team!

ABOUT TOOTING BEC F.C Tooting Bec FC was formed in 2004 on Tooting Common as a single side with a completely social focus. Within just six years, and after four promotions, we had reached Step 7 football and were also running a reserve side.

Our success continued in 2010 when the club won the SSEC League and Cup double, narrowly missing out on an historic treble after losing in a cup final.

The reserve and ‘B’ teams have also contributed to the club’s trophy haul over the years, as the Bec has continued to grow both on and off the pitch.

The 2017/18 season was another landmark year.

Having narrowly missed out on the Surrey Elite title on the final day the previous season, we returned stronger and comfortably won the league by five points, securing promotion in the process. That season also saw the club enter the FA Vase for the first time, beating Littlehampton 3-1 before being knocked out

by Fisher in the following round.

The following season, 2018/19, was our first in the Combined Counties League. After a slow start that saw us sitting in mid-table in October, a fantastic run from then until the end of the campaign lifted us to an unexpected third-place finish and secured qualification for the FA Cup for the first time in our history.

We went into 2019/20 expecting a tougher challenge, but once again found ourselves competing towards the top of the table. When the season was cancelled due to Covid-19 in March, we were sitting fourth and well placed for promotion. We had also made our FA Cup debut at Guildford City, narrowly losing 3-2.

Covid brought a premature end to the 2019/20 season and, ultimately, our hopes of promotion and another FA Cup appearance. The following campaign was also curtailed after just nine games, with the Bec once again sitting in the top four.

The club is based at Tooting & Mitcham FC, where all of our sides train and play on the 3G. Our first team spent time playing home matches at Chipstead and Raynes Park Vale before returning to Tooting & Mitcham in 2019. The facilities there gave us the opportunity to move into the Combined Counties League and Step 6 football, where we have enjoyed visiting new grounds, making new friends and establishing ourselves at the right end of the table.

In November 2020, the club turned to former first-team centre-back and title-winning reserve team manager Matt Hancock to lead the side. Matt appointed the former Raynes Park management duo of Reece Turner and Gavin Bolger to his management team, with Reece later departing to take up a similar role at SCR. Following the FA restructure, we found ourselves in the SCEFL Division One alongside some very good teams with significantly bigger budgets. It was therefore a huge achievement to compete towards the top of the table during our first two seasons.

In 2021/22, we reached the play-offs before losing to eventual promoted side Sutton Athletic. Despite some inconsistency costing us points in the league, the season finished with a historic achievement as we won the London Senior Trophy – the club’s first-ever county cup. After victories over Sporting Hackney, Bridon Ropes and others, we faced local rivals AFC Cubo in the final.

After Cubo kept us at bay during normal time, the Bec stepped up a gear in extra time to run out 3-0 winners, with goals from Sodike Thompson, Eddie M’Bango and Jack Martin.

The 2022/23 campaign followed a familiar pattern, with a slow start before we found our rhythm in the second half of the season. A fantastic run took us to a second-place finish and another London Senior Trophy final. Unfortunately, we were unable to retain the trophy, losing to FC Petrocub, before suffering further heartbreak in the play-off final against Lydd Town. After a 1-1 draw, we lost on penalties, missing out on promotion once again.

Success inevitably brought change, with the majority of that squad subsequently moving on. Three players joined Redhill, Eoin Bolger stepped up to Step 3 with Walton & Hersham, while Eddie M’Bango continued his well-travelled pre-season tradition.

The following season proved to be our toughest in a decade, as we finished eighth and missed out on the play-offs for the first time since joining the SCEFL. After three hugely successful years that had taken the club to the brink of Step 5, Matt Hancock and Gavin Bolger decided it was the right time to step away.

James Parsons stepped up from his player-coach role to take charge, supported by an exciting management team of Matthew Stone, Paul Meredith and Dwight Barnett. After a busy pre-season of recruitment, we knew we faced a huge challenge in what we believed was one of the toughest Step 6 leagues in the country.

Despite failing to win any of our opening seven games, we remained patient and gradually built a team that found its form in the new year. A strong run moved us into the top half of the table, while an impressive cup run ended with another piece of

silverware – our second London Senior Trophy. This time, we defeated Westminster Casuals 5-2 in the final.

Last season again promised plenty. We were sitting third in November, but a combination of player departures and a loss of confidence saw our league form tail off badly in the second half of the campaign.

There was, however, more cup success to celebrate.

A penalty shoot-out victory over much-fancied Lordswood saw us lift the SCEFL Division One Cup, adding another trophy to an impressive recent haul and helping establish the Bec as one of the most successful non-league clubs in the region for silverware over the past five years.

As we enter the 2026/27 season, there has been another shake-up in the management team, with Carl MacCallister joining James Parsons. Pre-season has brought plenty of encouragement, and despite operating without a significant playing budget, we have assembled a squad that we believe can compete and, most importantly, will wear the badge with pride and give everything for each other.

We know the challenge ahead. We’ve battled the odds before, and we intend to upset a few of the big boys once again.

Our ambitions are clear: to get back into the play-offs, retain the League Cup and continue the progress of a club that has come an incredibly long way since those early days on Tooting Common in 2004.

RESERVES TEAM Two Central RESERVES ROUND UP Division & East, 2026-27 Minster Reserves return to Division Two Central & East this season following relegation from Division One Central & East - a step back down shared with Cuxton 1991 Reserves. It’s a division that mixes familiar faces from last season’s Division Two East, a trio of clubs arriving on the back of promotion from local feeder leagues, and one brand-new team finding its feet.

Paddock Wood FC - Long-standing community club based in Paddock Wood, catering from youth level through to adult football.

Baypoint FC - Play at Baypoint Sports Club, Ramsgate Road, Sandwich. A settled Division Two outfit with a strong junior set-up behind the senior side.

Deal Town Youth FC – Essentially Deal Town Rangers of the seasons before and now a “reserves” team of Deal Town FC of the Isthmian League. They arrive as champions of the Canterbury & District Saturday Football League Premier Division.

Canterbury Eagles FC - Formerly known as Lokomotiv Canterbury before rebranding to better reflect their local identity; a Charter Standard club with a big youth structure feeding the senior team.

Charing FC - Based at Charing Playing Fields, The Moat, Charing, near Ashford.

Faversham Strike Force Reserves - The reserve arm of a club that grew from a youth football programme into senior football; first team plays in the Southern Counties East League and groundshares with Whitstable Town at the Belmont Ground.

Gillingham Town FC - Nicknamed “The Town”, founded 2010, based at the Garrison Sports Ground, Chatham.

Larkfield & New Hythe Reserves - Reserve side of a club whose first team plays two levels up in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division; based at Larkfield & New Hythe Sports Club, near Aylesford.

Littlebourne FC - Play at Littlebourne Recreation Ground, just outside Canterbury. We have had some tough battles with them in the past – but our first team have pushed on since those days.

Barming FC - Arrive from the Sevenoaks & District Football League Division Two, reportedly finishing around third.

Kemsing United FC - Based in the Sevenoaks district village of Kemsing, promoted as runners-up in the Sevenoaks & District Football League Premier Division.

AFC Gravesend - Based at Old Southfields Green, Cedar Avenue, Gravesend. Already a Division Two East side last season after being relegated from Division One the year before, so know their way around this level even if last term’s exact finish is hard to pin down.

Margate FC Reserves - A genuinely new team, launched by the Isthmian League club in the summer of 2026 as part of a three-year plan to build a bridge between their youth pathway and senior football at Hartsdown Park. Jointly managed by Salim Usman and Artur Hoxha, this is their first season in competitive league football - worth keeping an eye on given the resources of the parent club behind them.

Cuxton 1991 Reserves - The other side dropping down from Division One Central & East alongside Minster this season. The Medway-based club’s first team plays in the Kent County League Premier Division itself, ground sharing at the Gallagher Stadium in Maidstone — a reminder that a reserve side can carry senior-level standards even at this level.

1911 TEAM CDFL - DIVISION 1 1911 return to Division One this season after relegation from the Canterbury & District League Premier Division. It’s a division built largely around reserve sides from clubs a tier up, plus a strong intake of new teams stepping into adult league football for the first time. Here’s the rundown of who stands in the way.

Reserve sides from higher-level clubs Betteshanger FC Reserves - Reserve team of the long-standing Betteshanger club, based near Deal, with roots going back to the village’s colliery welfare football tradition.

Chilham FC Reserves - Chilham’s Saturday first team plays a level up in the Kent County League; this reserve side carries the second string, based at the Chilham Recreation Ground.

New to adult league football this season Deal Town Youth FC - Deal Town Youth FC reserve outfit, new to this division for 2026-27.

Herne Bay Youth - A senior side spun out of the well-known Herne Bay Youth football setup (Herne Bay Sports Hub, Braid Drive), fielding a men’s team in adult competition for the first time.

Snowdown United FC - New to the league this season, carrying the name of the old Snowdown Colliery Welfare club from the village near Aylesham.

Established outfit Rising Stars - The senior men’s team of a Whitstable-founded club (est. 2014) that’s primarily a large youth football operation across Canterbury, Whitstable and Faversham; this is their adult first team.

WOMENS TEAM THE HINDS STEP UP: MEET THE 2026-27 OPPOSITION Last season’s Kent Division 3 East title sends The Hinds up into Kent Division 2 East for 2026-27. Of last term’s Division 2 East line-up, only three sides survive into the new nine-team division alongside Minster: Hawkinge Town, Lydd Town and Sittingbourne. The rest of the group have arrived from Division 1 and some fielding senior women’s sides in county league football for the very first time.

Ashford United Development Ashford United’s senior women’s side plays a tier above in the London & South East Regional Women’s League, which makes this Development side the pathway team beneath it. The club has recently restructured its women’s and girls’ football, appointing Mark Mason as Women’s Chairman.

Big Bear The most unfamiliar name in the division. Big Bear started life as a Maidstone-based community coaching operation for boys and girls aged 4–16, built around founder Lee Wenham’s grassroots coaching sessions. Their entry into senior women’s league football appears to be a first, so there’s no form book to go on.

Faversham Town This side were playing their football in Kent Division 1 Mid East last term under manager Andy Sargen - so this isn’t a side short on structure or experience, even if their form arriving with them into Division 2 East is untested.

THE SECWFL KENT DIVISION 2 SEASON COMMENCES ON THE 6TH SEPTEMBER 2026

Hawkinge Town A known quantity, and a dangerous one. Hawkinge finished runners-up in Division 2 East last season, taking 35 points from 16 games (11 wins, 2 draws, 3 defeats) - comfortably the second-best record in the division behind a runaway champion.

Herne Bay FC Women U23 Herne Bay’s senior women play two tiers above this division, in the London & South East Regional Women’s League Division 1 North, sitting at the top of a genuinely well-built East Kent pathway that runs first team, Development squad, JPL Under-18s and now this Under-23 side. Likely one of the more organised outfits Minster will face this season.

Lydd Town The other known quantity with genuine momentum.

Lydd finished third in Division 2 East last season with 32 points from 16 games - a notable improvement on their sixth-place finish the season before. A club on an upward curve, and one that went all the way to a Kent Divisional Cup final in 2024-25.

Sellindge A community club through and through, based at Sellindge Sports & Social Club with a youth pathway feeding into the senior side. Smaller in scale than several of the division’s other clubs, but an established fixture in Kent women’s league football.

Sittingbourne The third survivor from last season’s Division 2 East table, where they finished fifth with 20 points from 16 games - solid mid-table form. A well-established Kent club with strong youth numbers underneath the senior side.

WELCOME TO MINSTER FC You will have seen from the club crest that we are over 100 years old with only World Wars getting in the way of continued existence – a matter not taken lightly as club players and staff fought for their country during these difficult times. The club photos in our Minster pavilion main hall reminds us of our history and the generations of players that have represented our club.

Throughout these years there have been successful teams – most notably in the 1960s – that have played the game in the right spirit and have set the foundations for future generations to continue. A difficult time in the early 1980s saw the club – with only a single team at the time - almost fail to finish a season in the Thanet League due to lack of players and support.

My father Ralph (also known locally as Colin) stepped in to gather as many eligible youngsters – including myself – to register and play those final matches to keep the club alive. The results didn’t matter – there was a much larger motive to keep the continuity of the club. For us 16/17 year old lads at the time we were finally playing for Minster – a team we had watched from the sidelines for many years. The following seasons saw the club continue to build from the very bottom upwards.

Our club has now grown very quickly in these last 12-13 years as we have built on the success of a very young team – managed by Ian Wallace - that have progressed through the Canterbury & District League and further into the Kent County Football League to the Premier Division where we consolidated our standing with 2nd, 4th, 2nd and 2nd places across those 4 seasons. This has now led us to be accepted for promotion to the Southern Counties east Football League Division 1 as we start an historic 2026/27 season playing at Step 6 of the national system for the first time. This is the highest level the club has competed at since it was formed in 1911 and we are proud to have reached this moment.

2016 We now have three further adult teams that have been added in the last 6 years and we have seen our club develop a pathway for young players within the area to progress with their football. Our veterans team continue to enjoy their football in the local Len Martin Thanet & District League. We now have two youth teams at U16 & U18 age groups and our previous youth teams have provided players into our adults squads over the years as the pathway has started to take shape. Last season the club developed a women’s football team for the first time since the 1960s when Minster were one of the original female teams in the area.

Whilst we have had good fortune on the pitch these last few years backed by a huge amount of effort away from match days, we continue to be a club that see long term friendships and a sense of community spirit as being the real “winning.”

A village team that will continue to use football to build competitive spirit alongside friendships that will last a lifetime.

The Southern Counties East Football League strongly support recent FA statements that there should be a zero tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination, accordingly any form of discriminatory abuse whether it be based on race or ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, faith, age, ability or any other form of abuse will be reported to the relevant County Association for action by that Association.
