Ramsgate
We couldn’t have picked a more historic season to start Thanet Football Magazine, most notably as Margate FC and Ramsgate FC both played in the Isthmian South East Division.
While both teams were looking to gain promotion to the Premier Division, the Thanet Derbies where intense occasions, with sellout crowds and phenomenal football being played. Each derby game was a spectacular event showcasing what Thanet Football has to offer, on and off the field.
We’ve had the privilege of interviewing a selection of Thanet’s Footballing stars, both from the current game, and legends from the past, giving an insight into their careers.
Our aim to cover a wide range of Thanet Football has included Women’s Football, Walking Football, Street Football, Veterans Football, Youth Football, Schools Football, Charity Games, Man Vs Fat, Sunday League Football, Referees Journeys, Managers Experiences, and so much more.
We would like to thank all the football fans, followers of the magazine, and our advertisers. Without you, the magazine just wouldn’t be possible. The amount of support we have received, and kind words, have kept us going. We continue to be committed to creating engaging content for all our readers.
We look forward to next season and covering all aspects of the beautiful game in Thanet!
The Rams clinched the title against Hythe Town away after securing a 4-0 victory. They had to wait until their next home game to lift the trophy against Thanet rivals Margate FC. Where they received a guard of honour from their neighbours.

16-YEAR-OLD ANNA FROM YO! STREET ZONE NUTMEGS KYLIAN MBAPPÉ AT NIKE’S IMMERSIVE
A DREAM TURNED REALITY FOR 16-YEAROLD ANNA, A RISING STREET FOOTBALL TALENT FROM MARGATE’S YO! STREET ZONE CREW, WHO WAS INVITED BY NIKE TO MADRID FOR THE EXCLUSIVE KYLIAN MBAPPÉ X THE ROOM EXPERIENCE ON 24TH APRIL 2025.
Accompanied by her coach Yofi, Anna was invited by Nike to fly to the Spanish capital, where the duo was treated to an unforgettable experience. Upon arrival, the surprises began - including discovering Nike goodies and a mysterious “THE DREAM IS REAL” key waiting for them in their hotel rooms.
What followed was a mind-blowing, immersive journey through the life and legacy of Kylian Mbappé. Set in a vast, high-tech room surrounded by massive screens, the experience was narrated by the voice of a young Mbappé. It transported Anna through his childhood, including a replica of his boyhood bedroom and the iconic homemade magazine cover he created to manifest his dream of becoming a star.
Then something unexpected happened: The room exploded with visuals featuring Anna herself! Her face appeared on magazine covers and digital billboards, with phrases like “Nutmeg of the Year: Anna vs. Kilyan” and “Anna nutmegging giants since she was 11”. This moment was surreal and jaw-dropping for the young street football player.
The experience ended with a goal-scoring challenge, where Anna had to hold her nerve and score 10 goals into a fast-moving goal on a giant screen in front of her. She was rewarded with a pair of the brand-new Nike Mercurial Superfly 10 Elite ‘Kylian Mbappé boots.
The main highlight of the day followed in the afternoonmeeting Kylian Mbappé in person. After introducing herself, Anna asked if she could show him some skills. “Yeah, show me, show me, show me!” he said.
Anna performed a set of football skills, finishing with a cheeky nutmeg that left Mbappé laughing and impressed.
Anna then asked him about his injury to which he replied: “Pretty good, better every day,” before joking, “But now with what you did to me, I have to get it treated again,” which had everyone laughing.

(WITH A CUP FINAL STILL TO GO)
COLIN HOLDEN CHAIRMAN
I MUST ADMIT, FINDING TIME TO WRITE A SUMMARY OF OUR SEASON IN THESE LAST FEW DAYS HAS BEEN DIFFICULT, WITH THE USUAL FLURRY OF FIXTURES, AS ALWAYS, USING UP BANK HOLIDAYS OVER EASTER AND THE START OF MAY. THROW IN A KENT JUNIOR CUP C FINAL FOR OUR 1911 TEAM, AND OUR OLD BOYS WINNING THE THANET VETERANS LEAGUE DIVISION 2 TITLE ON THEIR LAST GAME OF THE SEASON, IT LEAVES US PAUSING FOR BREATH A LITTLE RIGHT NOW.
Our first team continue to set the standards in terms of performance and attitude for the club. As a group, they have overcome the disappointment towards the end of last season, where it was clear that our potential for progress further up the football league pyramid suffered a setback as we were forced to return to our natural home of Minster Recreation Ground for the 2024/25 season. We have of course enjoyed playing at The Rec and the results also show that to be the case.
Our final league game of the season was away to New Romney on Bank Holiday Monday at the start of May, and this fixture was perhaps ‘manufactured’ as it could potentially have been the KCFL Premier Division title decider. We have sat in 2nd place in the division behind New Romney since the end of November and it has always been about trying to catch them up. Unfortunately for us they continued an impressive run of success through to the end of April, when it became mathematically impossible for us to catch them with three games to go. For that final league match, we provided them with a guard of honour as they made their way onto the pitch as 2024/25 champions. The match itself was certainly not played as a ‘dead rubber’ and we came out 3-0 winners, with our leading scorer,
Ollie Harris, bagging 2 goals and finishing the season with the KCFL Premier Division Golden Boot. So, the season ended with us taking runners-up spot on 70 points, 2 points behind the champions and 10 points ahead of 3rd placed Cuxton 91 FC. Our best points tally of our 3 seasons so far in the top flight where we have been placed 2nd, 4th and 2nd.
Other highlights of the season for the first team included our Kent Senior Trophy Friday evening ties at Hartsdown Park, where we performed well against SCEFL Premier Division opponents Lydd Town and Bearsted. Both matches went to penalties where we were successful against Lydd but were knocked out of the competition by Bearsted. Those games proved to us that we have the potential to compete against teams in the divisions above us. They also currently stand as a marker in the club’s history as the highest level of competitive football we have played in our 114 years.
Those Friday night Senior Trophy matches at Hartsdown Park also allowed us to continue our conversations with Margate FC about the potential ground share for next season. Following confirmation from Canterbury City
FC in January that they would not be extending their arrangement at Hartsdown Park, we were able to finalise our agreement with Margate and have continued to have good discussions - not only about ground share logistics, but also how our clubs can work together, providing football opportunities for all in the area.
Whilst our Kent Senior Trophy cup exploits took a lot of the headlines, we have quietly progressed to the final of the KCFL Cup - The Bill Manklow Inter-Regional Challenge Cup. This is a trophy that we won in 2022, this being the season that saw us promoted to the Premier Division. At the time, it was significant for us to at last gain some silverware following four back-to-back promotions from the Canterbury League to the KCFL Premier Division. These were some tough years that were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and whilst we made our way through the divisions, there were no trophies awarded due to incomplete seasons. On Saturday 17th Maywe take on Long Lane FC in the final, which will take place at the Larkfield & New Hythe ground in Ditton, Maidstone.
All the above exploits, success, and history making, would not have been possible without the exceptional leadership of our manager Ian Wallace who continues to reset the bar in terms of effort, performance, and attitude across the whole club. He is ably assisted by Liam Morris who is now finishing his second season supporting Ian with the first team. Liam has also largely contributed to the running of the club, finances and player development away from the first team pitch achievements - something that I am certainly appreciative of. Completing the first team management set-up, we also have our Club Secretary, Steve Farbrace who is another multi-tasker within our Club, as he supports our first team match days as well as looking after our Minster FC Old Boys team who just secured that Thanet Division 2 title (he has chipped in a few goals for the team along the way!).
Regardless of the outcome of our final in mid-May, we can yet again look back on another successful season for the club, with the first team being at the forefront as always. Another push for the KCFL Premier Division title, matching SCEFL opponents in the Kent Senior Trophy and again creating history for Minster Football Club. Add this to a season playing at Hartsdown Park to look forward to, along with another push to climb the football league pyramid, we have plenty to look forward to here at Minster Football
“REGARDLESS OF THE OUTCOME OF OUR FINAL IN MID-MAY, WE CAN YET AGAIN LOOK BACK ON ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON FOR THE CLUB WITH THE FIRST TEAM BEING AT THE FOREFRONT AS ALWAYS. “
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON HAVING A PLAYER MANAGER IN BEN, WAS HE A FACTOR FOR JOINING THE ‘GATE?
It’s different, I haven’t worked under someone who is a manager as well as a player before. It’s very good because as well as him being a manager on the pitch, we’re teammates, and it’s good to have that balance - and yes, he was a major factor. I spoke with him prior to signing and he explained what he wanted, and I’ve seen his talent on numerous occasions.
THE CLUB HAS MADE SOME GREAT SIGNINGS THIS SEASON, INCLUDING YOURSELF. HOW DO YOU FEEL THEY, AND YOU, HAVE INTEGRATED WITHIN THE TEAM?
I feel like personally I’ve fitted very well into the team on and off the pitch. The boys welcomed me with open arms as soon as I arrived, and it goes a long way, you start to feel comfortable, and it shows on the pitch.
DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL ROUTINE OR SUPERSTITION BEFORE YOU PLAY A BIG GAME?
Not really, I just always pray 3-5 times before I step onto the pitch..
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN YOUR FOOTBALL CAREER, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME IT?
I would say my time at Maidstone. It was a big challenge because I had made a big jump from step 4 to step 2, but my time there was challenging because I wasn’t playing as much as I wanted to be, so it was a lot to take mentally. I overcame it by staying positive and my old team mates made it very easy for me.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?
In my free time I like to chill, watch tv and catch up with my friends.
WHO WERE YOUR IDOLS GROWING UP AND WHO MADE YOU WANT TO BE A FOOTBALLER?
Lionel Messi
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT SO FAR AS A ‘GATE PLAYER?
My favourite moment I would say is walking out onto the pitch and bringing home the 3 points.
WE’D LIKE TO THANK TUSHAUN FOR TAKING THE TIME TO TALK TO US ABOUT HIS CAREER AND HIS TIME SO FAR AT MARGATE FC.
SHRIMPOS FC HAVE RAISED £10,000 COLLECTIVELY TOWARDS STEPHEN’S FUNERAL COSTS, EPILEPSY SOCIETY PARTNERSHIP, AND DONATIONS TO EPILEPSY ACTION. SINCE STEPHEN PASSED IT CAME TO THINKING TO RAISE MONEY VIA A GOFUNDME, TO HELP THE FAMILY TO COVER THE COSTS OF STEPHEN’S FUNERAL. 235 PEOPLE GENEROUSLY DONATED, GIVING A TOTAL OF £7,515.
BY REECE WIGGINS
Stephen Shrimpton aka ‘Shrimpo’ sadly lost his life to epilepsy in 2023. He was an avid Liverpool FC fan. Stephen was a keen footballer and despite having epilepsy, he still enjoyed doing the things he loved. Rain, sun, sleet or snow, you could rely on Stephen to be there to back his team.
We then wanted to keep Stephen’s name going and have him remembered and decided to put together the Stephen Shrimpton memorial game. Before Stephen’s passing, he was always coming to watch me while I was playing and co-managing Fury’s FC, so it was only right that Fury’s would become one of the 2 teams involved, and the other team would be made up from Stephen’s Friends & Family. After 3 events, it’s now Fury’s FC 2 Friends & Family 1, F&F taking their first win in the recent game. At the beginning of the season, we decided on naming our new team Shrimpos FC to carry on his legacy, and to have his name visible in the local community for as long as we can. We have managed to raise funds, spread awareness and give back to our local community - through food collections that we donated to a local food bank and also the feed the hungry campaign where we provided fresh hot meals to the homeless. All of this is done in our best friend’s name. Our plan is to keep on building the team and create 2 teams, one that will compete in the Thanet Sunday League and another that will take part in charities events and matches

A capacity crowd of 3,300 people packed into the WW Martin Community Stadium, with just under 1,000 Blues in support!
The game started brightly for The ‘Gate, Louie Atkins in three minutes had a golden chance but it was saved by Henry Newcombe.
On 16 minutes, Josh Ajayi beat the Margate offside trap and went through one-on-one with Tom Wray, but Wray did well to win the ball in his box as Ajayi tried to take it round him!
Then just a minute later, Max Walsh had his 16th goal of the season, Tom Derry flicked it into his path and Walsh placed it home to make it 0-1!
Just two minutes later Wray was called into action and produced two big saves to deny Benny Bioletti and Joe Taylor from point blank range.
Corners were a big part of this game, both teams had a lot but neither team were creating golden chances, however in the 42nd minute, a Ramsgate corner would mean a goal…
For The ‘Gate as they hit the hosts on a counter. Tushaun Walters brought the ball into the Rams half, played it down the line for Derry, and his cross found the head of Atkinsand it was a super finish to make it 0-2!
Just before half-time, Ajayi scored from a free kick, he went around the wall and beat Wray at the far post, setting up an exciting second half.
In the 48th minute Atkins would hit the woodwork as Ben Greenhalgh’s cross found Derry’s head at the back post, he directed the header to Atkins, but the strike hit the bar.

I STARTED MY LOVE OF MARGATE FC IN 1990 WHEN MY WORK COLLEAGUE, BRAD CALLAGHAN, USED TO SELL GOLDEN GATE TICKETS IN OUR OFFICE. HE SAID I SHOULD COME UP TO WATCH A GAME AND I WAS INSTANTLY HOOKED.
There were highs and lows but my memories of games that stick in my mind are season 2000/01 when we won the Southern Premier League, getting the point needed with a nervy 0-0 draw with Newport County, ironically my home team that I supported as a kid in Wales. Another season was 2014/15 when we won the play off at Hendon with an early goal from Ryan Moss. I then remember the next season at Bath City, standing on the pitch after the game with Nikki Bull, Ryan Day and my son Gareth, waiting to see the Havant and Waterlooville result, and surviving relegation by just one point. Then in 2022/23, being proud of the team as they won the Kent Senior Cup at Gillingham, beating Chatham Town on penalties.
I soon started helping out at the club, joining the supporters committee, organising events, helping pre-season painting etc. Then in 2006-2010 I decided to help the club and became vice president, going to all the games, both home and away. I then stepped away due to my wife’s stroke - but still saw as many games as I could.
After taking early retirement in 2019 from my London job, I saw that the club wanted a kitman, and as Jay Saunders was the manager - a player I had admired and sponsored for 4 or 5 seasons - I decided to apply for it. Unfortunately,
BY CHRISTIAN BALL
I PERSONALLY STARTED MY COACHING JOURNEY 9 SEASONS AGO WHEN THE FIRST GROUP OF PLAYERS WERE 5/6 AND WHERE MY PHILOSOPHY AT THE START WAS TO DEVELOP PLAYERS IN A FUN ENVIRONMENT AND ULTIMATELY TURN THEM INTO BETTER PEOPLE. THE IDEA WAS ONE DAY WHEN THESE PLAYERS BECOME ADULTS THEY CAN LOOK BACK ON THEIR JOURNEY WITH FOND MEMORIES.
As we roll through the years and my philosophy has slightly changed, but still sticking with some of my core values, we get to U13 EKYL div 1 level where two teams merge. It took a while for the new and existing players to adapt to each other but also to my playing style. That season we finished third. Not a bad season but I could see the
We also now have an identity, a lot of emphasis in training is designed around moving the ball quickly, playing through the thirds, our link up play and creating spaces. These lads have excelled with the challenge and certainly are not the same players or the team we created 12 months previously, that in turn for me is what success looks likea sense of achievement that these players have developed in the right way.
The lads have had an incredible season so far, winning the cup 5-2 against Dover, an achievement that has not been done by a Margate u14s team since 1992. The lads were incredible that day and deserved all the plaudits they received. Similarly, in the league, the lads have also done outstanding so far, scoring over 80 goals in all competitions and conceding about 15 all season. With a couple of games to go, and in the hope of winning the league and achieving the double. This is very much in our own hands and another example of how well this squad has done this season, an achievement rarely seen in youth football (but let’s not tempt fate).
Jonny, Shaun and myself are extremely proud of these boys this season, and as a lesson in all walks of life, if you work hard enough you will reap the rewards.
Charles joined us at the beginning of the season, having played outfield season before in previous team. Most clean sheets this season in the league.
Hadley has been part of the team for many years, a very versatile player and willing to adapt to all positions. Most of the season has played either LB or RB and is not afraid to get stuck in..
Stan has been in the team from the start, growing from strength to strength each season, and is very comfortable on the ball when playing out from back. Leader on the back line and loves a set piece in the first third.
Zalan joined us halfway through the season. Another player very comfortable on the ball and good at winning the ball back out of possession.
Kagan has grown this season to become an important member of the team, full of confidence which is showing in his performances.
Carl has played most of the season at the back, tweaking his positioning slightly as we draw close to the end of season, most notably winning a penalty in the cup, scored a goal and got some assists.
Jack is another player I’ve watched grow from the very start and can play any position and excel in it. Played at the back most of the season where he has used his pace to intercept the ball from the opposition.
Jude has played a few positions this season and scored some important goals in some matches. Quite often finds himself on the wing whipping in crosses.
Sonny is a very intelligent player, picking out his passes to perfection. Loves a little dink over the top of a defender for the striker to run onto. Also, very composed in front of goal which led to two cracking goal in the cup final.
Kian is the gaffer’s son, before being plagued with injuries he made this position his own, very composed on the ball and reads the game well to find the right passes. I have been very proud of him over the years and perhaps I’ve been guilty of not telling him this enough.
Rhys been with the team a few years now, left footed player who loves a set piece. Another player that can play on either wing, and loves to whip a cross in.
Bear started at the beginning of the season. Another very versatile player that always gives 100 percent. Scored two cracking goals in the cup final.
JJ plays centre mid and is very aggressive on and off the ball. Very confident player that loves a 1v1. Scored plenty of great goals throughout the season. One of the leaders in the team.
Big J as I like to call him, our captain, and leads by example. A very strong player in CM role, played in a number 10 role this season also, charging his way through defenders, scoring plenty of goals along the way. As the captain, Jayden leads by example.
Filip’s development has been incredible the last couple of seasons. Gone from LB when he first joined, to striker or LW, and has excelled in both and scored many goals. Works very hard in and out of possession.
Joseph joined us quite late in the season, and was recognised as a good player that could help the team. Joseph is rapid, causes defenders all sorts of problems, and has added a few goals since joining.

BAYPOINT FC
BY MARK GOLDSACK
BAYPOINT FC GIRLS FOOTBALL IS GROWING WELL, AND WE CAN THANK THE ENGLAND LIONESSES AND THE GROWTH OF THE WSL FOR PUTTING LADIES’ AND GIRLS’ FOOTBALL INTO THE PUBLIC SPOTLIGHT.
SINCE BAYPOINT WAS FORMED, WE NOW BOAST 1 X U9, 2 X U14, 1 X U15, LADIES 2ND AND LADIES 1ST TEAMS - AND WE HOPE TO GROW IT FURTHER. WE ARE ALSO PROUD TO HAVE GIRLS PLAYING IN OUR MIXED YOUTH TEAMS ACROSS U12, U13 & U14.
AS WE MOVE UP A YEAR IN SEPTEMBER, YOU CAN SEE THE PATHWAY FORMING THROUGH TO OUR LADIES’ FOOTBALL TEAMS.
Mark has 8 years youth coaching experience, and was previously assistant coach at Manston Hurricanes, before moving to Baypoint. Mark remains assistant coach for the U13s. He is FA level 1 trained, which he’s putting into good practice with the U9 girls.
This is the first season for Baypoint U9 Girls. The team was created off the back of our Wednesday night FA Wildcats sessions last summer, where we had an influx of girls wanting to play football and have fun at the same time. The Lionesses successes was evident to see as our girl’s football teams blossomed. The team was the brainchild of Scott Holden. Scott has great knowledge of girls’ football and is managing the successful U13 Girls side. Scott is a well-respected coach, and the girls warmed to his coaching immediately.
The league started with two coaches, Hannah Walden and Mark Goldsack. We were lucky to secure sponsorship from The DSC (a local chartered surveyor company). This was great as the girls started to feel like a team wearing the kit. We train every Wednesday, and you can see their friendships developing, along with their skills. This is evident when you compare our first matches to now, where their performances have been great across all the positions. The season has ended, and we have had a great journey so far, scoring lots of goals and defending well. It’s great to see the girls play and put into their performance what we’ve been practicing.
Due to Hannah’s work commitments, Mark took over the head coach role in December, assisted by Diva Lipse (recently qualified coach). Mark’s playing ethos is to have the girls play with a smile on their face, quick passing and press from the front. The girls have brought into this. It’s going to be a great journey, and we look forward to preseason challenges, our first tournament at Whitstable, and next season starting.

OUR ETHOS IS AN EMPHASISE OF FUN, DEVELOPMENT, RESPECT, AND TEAMWORK, WHILE ALSO FOSTERING INDIVIDUAL GROWTH AND A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT. IT'S ABOUT CREATING A SPACE WHERE PLAYERS CAN LEARN, IMPROVE, AND ENJOY THE GAME.
The coaches are proud of both teams achievements this season. Baypoint U14 Girls FC have reached the final of the Tina Marshall Cup. This is no small feat, especially in their first season after forming both teams. It shows the hard work, dedication, and talent of the girls and the coaching staff. Fingers crossed for the final! Lifting the trophy would indeed mark a glorious milestone in their young football careers.
Equally impressive are the positive dynamics within the Baypoint FC Reds U14's Girls team in their first season! Building a strong bond and maintaining a positive attitude is indeed a significant achievement and sets a solid foundation for future success.
The girls have fostered a supportive environment, encouraging each other. Many are experiencing their first season, which can be challenging, yet they’re embracing it positively. As coaches, witnessing this growth and camaraderie is rewarding. The overall positivity has led to improved teamwork and performance on the field. These elements not only contribute to their current success but also lay the groundwork for future developments in their football journey.
An Emphasis has been placed on personal growth and enhancement of skills without pressure on match results. We wanted to ensure regular participation in 11-a-side football weekly, fostering a sense of routine and improvement, competing in the right division which matches skill levels, and allowing for learning and growth against similarly skilled opponents. We merged two previous teams to create a cohesive unit, promoting teamwork and camaraderie. This enabled us to focus on enjoyment, creating a supportive environment that built confidence, and fostered a love for the game.
We aim to lay a strong foundation for building upon the successes and lessons learned in the 2024/2025 season. This approach fosters not just skill development but also a positive team culture.
Our team's playing style is highly adaptable and strategic. Emphasising versatility, our approach allows for adjustments based on specific opponents and game scenarios. This provides an ability to switch tactics based on opponents, adjusting attacking and defensive strategies as needed. We focus strongly on defence, possibly using formations that emphasise stability. In attack we utilise different methods to break down defences. We use varied passing techniques to fit the situation, whilst emphasising control of the ball to dictate the game's tempo. We maintain high energy levels throughout the game for optimum performance. This is evidenced in our aggressive pressing to regain possession quickly. The versatile approach we take keeps opponents guessing and helps our team thrive in various scenarios.
As a football coach, the next season's aims will focus on continuous player development, both individually and as a team, while fostering a positive and fun learning environment. This includes improving technical and tactical skills, physical conditioning, and mental resilience, as well as creating a strong team culture with clear values and expectations for the 2025/2026 season.
Whether you’re an academic, business provider, student, or simply seeking a deeper understanding of autism, our services provide a unique blend of perspectives and expertise.

The Rams in April showed what they are all about and clinched the title in style at Hythe Town on the 18th with a 4-0 win away from home.
The first game of the month didn't start off so great as they faced Three Bridges at home, and within 20 minutes found themselves a goal down. But the Rams showed their fighting spirit and determination to claim the title and hit back with 5 goals from Lee Martin (31'), Aaron Barnes (42'), Joe Taylor (72'), Benny Bioletti (75') and Joe Ellul (90+3').
This meant only one more win would give the Rams the title and the next game (away at Hythe) didn't disappoint, as a huge fan following cheered the team onto victory with goals from Tijan Jadama (3'), Jay Leader (49'), Alfie Paxman (79') and Joe Taylor (90’) -putting the 2024/25 Ramsgate side into the history books.
The Rams faced local rivals, Margate, in their first game after claiming the title and received a guard of honour from the Margate FC team, at the home ground of Ramsgate, the WW Martin Community Stadium. Unfortunately for Ramsgate, Margate beat them 4-1 but this didn't dampen the mood as the players celebrated alongside over 3,000 fans after the final whistle and were presented with the league trophy.
The final game of the season saw Ramsgate face off against title rivals Sittingbourne, away from home. Sittingbourne had secured a playoff position, but it was still a strongly contested game that ended in a 3-3 draw, with goals from Kai Garrett (scoring two) and Joe Ellul.
JOE CLAIMED THE GOLDEN BOOT FOR THE SECOND SEASON IN A ROW WITH AN IMPRESSIVE 40 LEAGUE GOALS.
“AS OF YET OUR SQUAD IS LOOKING STRONG FOR NEXT SEASON AS WE MASSIVELY FOCUS ON CONTINUITY FOR THE TEAM AND FOR THE FANS AND I’M SURE WE WILL BE BACK IN PRE-SEASON WITH A SQUAD EVEN STRONGER THAN LAST.”
This set up to what could have been a banana skin weekend. Beckenham remained only a couple points off Merstham in fifth and Ramsgate were playing for the league on the Friday. We knew we needed to start sharp and changed things up a little going into our home game v Beckenham, and it was the most ruthless start of the season. Max Walsh scored a brilliant first and then found himself in the right position to complete a hat trick within 23 minutes and I managed to add one to make it 4-0 just 29 minutes in. This was a sign of a team not crumbling to the tough schedule but striving going into the end of the season. A 6-2 win kept a massive buzz around the ground but obviously the inevitable had happened, with Ramsgate also winning the league that Friday.
This set up an even cagier affair on bank holiday Monday. They had been very consistent and hadn’t lost a game at home all season in the league and had only lost in the Kent cup there, which was also us. This may have been their fourth go at promotion in this league but credit to them for getting that number of points, we knew we could match them in one-to-one games but our objective this season was always get back to winning ways and changing that culture, which I believe we have done. That sort of point ratio just wasn’t something we were ready for just yet whereas they had practice and history of knowing wins could come at any occasion in the game, which I’m sure helped their mentality when getting that high number of points. We went to Ramsgate with a game plan, and it paid off really well - coming in 2-1 up at half time and having scored two really well worked goals by Max Walsh and Louie Atkins. We then kicked on in the second half just to make sure we could have some bragging rights, and it was another great occasion for our fans to experience - as we know it is difficult to see your rivals win the league; but to get a great win in the manner we did on that day helped to
sweeten the day in general. Myself, Flan, Elliot & Dan all applauded the celebrations of Ramsgate as they did have a great season still, which obviously spurred us on for next season, however it also showed how hard this league really can be to actually finish at the top.
We then altered the squad slightly for Ashford at home, but with a final goal from Ibz and a penalty save from Hobbs, this saw us see the season out with a 1-0 win and our final 3 points. This then took us to Tuesday, in the playoff against Burgess Hill Town, which was a very quick turnaround for all teams. We had worked hard on how we would play, but more importantly we were ready as a group.
We knew how well they rotated and played, and it had always caused us problems. However, we knew we deserved more in both games we had played against them in the season, so confidence was still high. The first half probably saw our best organised 45 minutes of football all season which led to 4/5 chances, hitting the bar twice, having the goalie scrambling in his net, one on ones and goalmouth scrambles - but somehow the goal that did go in was a deflection for them and somehow we found ourselves 1-0 down. We started the second half well, but their second goal did seem to knock our confidence, as we had worked the game plan really well but just hadn’t put the chances in the back of the net. Our fans were brilliant and took over Burgess Hill in great numbers - and even when the game was finished they were still making all the noise. Playoff upset will always be difficult to take as your whole season has come down to that one game, but that is the lottery of how the football system works. It’s a great occasion for spectators and players but when you’re on the end of it, and seeing the great support we’ve had all season, then it only makes us want to aim for better next season.
SUNDAY LEAGUE FOCUS
THANET ATHLETIC WAS PUT TOGETHER IN LATE 2022 BY OUR CURRENT GOALKEEPER LUKAS AND THENMANAGER REECE.
They began training at Margate cages and then on the 3G surface at Minster. The squad was starting to come together at that time but largely made up of guys who didn’t have teams and a fair amount of ringers. I joined at this point of pre-season, having spent 2 and a half years playing over in Dover - but before the final pre-season match our manager left and somehow I became the manager. I quickly put a squad together and we started our first season. Later my assistant Nick came on board and helped us secure sponsorship with New Style Barbers in Margate. The owner, Ramzi, was amazing, asking us what we needed and transferring me money for our 2024/2025 home kit. They’ve been really supportive of us and do it for the love of football.
It was a tough start to the season, with a lot of losses, but after a couple of solid signings before Christmas, something clicked. Even when we didn’t win, performances were largely good. My highlight of last season was our Junior Invitation Cup run. A last-minute winner in the quarter final against Holmans, a 4-3 win over Red Arrows from the
league above after being 3-0 down after 15 minutes, and not forgetting the crazy final at Southwood which Macies won 5-4. I will never forget those games, some of the best moments of pure football as it’s meant to be. Even though we lost the final, it was a real experience. I said at the time, from then on holidays have to be pre-approved! I am joking obviously but I am gutted for the players who were away, we never thought we’d make the final, truth be told. We had a tight unit of players last season; I made sure potential players had to be vouched for as a person first before their playing ability. It seemed to work and away from football we knew we could turn to each other with personal life help.
This season has been a funny one. A core of our squad left over the summer, and it felt like we started again. Lots of our players don’t play every week so consistency has been lacking in the line ups. There are around 8 that do play every week, but it’s not been the season we’d have hoped for. It looks like we will finish 7th this year, an improvement on 9th from last season, but when there are only 9 teams in division 2 that doesn’t sound as good. We haven’t had a romantic love affair with any cups this season. We have had lots of first round exits, apart from making the division 2 cup semi-final. That didn’t go our way but it’s never for the want of trying. There have been some memorable games still - and when we win it obviously feels great.
Our squad has always been fairly young. The average age is probably 20/21 and many came to us after a gap between
