EDITORS NOTES

It’s been a busy couple of months for TFM. The response to the October issue was incredible and the printed copies have been in high demand. We had a great experience at Ramsgate FC being presented with a signed & framed shirt that is available to win (how to enter is in this issue –pages 14-15 – and on our socials) and a news exclusive to boot. Our Editor Russel made an appearance on Academy fm to talk about the magazine and also met with the new manager of Margate Women FC, David Woodgate, to talk about his future plans.

HALLOWEEN ‘SPOOK’TACULAR

‘FANG’TASTIC AND ‘SPOOK’TACULAR EVENING OFF THE PITCH AS WELL AS A BRILLIANT NIGHT ON THE PITCH

RAMSGATE FC HOSTED A HALLOWEEN SPECIAL AT THE HOME GAME AGAINST SEVENOAKS TOWN, WITH A SPOOKY DISCO, ARTS & CRAFTS, HAIR CHALKING, FACE PAINTING AND A TRICK OR TREAT TRAIL THAT WAS A HIT WITH THE YOUNG RAMS FANS.

Some brilliant fancy dress costumes made an appearance, including the popular trio of T-Rex’s. It was great to see the kids forming a pre-match guard of honour and some walking out with the team.

It was a great night for the Rams on and off the field as they had a superb 5-1 win over Sevenoaks Town, with goals coming from Alfie Paxman x 2, Billy Munday, Benny Bioletti, & TJ Jadama. The evening was an all-round success for the Rams with a turnout of 937 people, which is beyond expectations for a Tuesday evening!

TFM THOUGHTS...

At TFM we feel that Ramsgate FC are doing something great in giving the young fans and the Rams community a real family focused environment, where all ages can enjoy the football by visiting the WW Martin Community stadium. James Lawson and the team have done a top job in providing a welcoming feel to the stadium, and hosting events such as the Halloween party gives all ages something to do at the games.

INTERVIEW - RAMSGATE FC’S

JOE TAYLOR

RECORD BREAKER

WE CAUGHT UP WITH RAMS LEGEND

JOE TAYLOR TO DISCUSS HIS CAREER AT RAMSGATE FOOTBALL CLUB.

HOW DID IT FEEL BREAKING MICKY WILLIAMSON’S GOAL SCORING RECORD, CEMENTING YOUR NAME IN THE RAMSGATE FC HISTORY BOOKS??

Breaking Micky’s all time goal scorers record was a proud moment. Micky is still adamant he has scored many more than 120, which I have no doubt he has! But recorded goals, I have the most, and I’m looking to add to that tally for the rest of this season and hopefully a couple more!

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO SIGN AT RAMSGATE FC?

I made a decision to leave Lewes FC and had a few options but when I met with James Lawson he told me he wants to take my hometown club up the leagues with the best local players and the best talent they can access from outside of Thanet, I saw his passion and energy. The biggest reason was also to play for Ben Smith who had tried to sign me a couple of times prior to that moment. He’s great for me.

WHO WERE YOUR FOOTBALLING IDOLS GROWING UP AND DID YOU TRY EMULATING THEM WITH YOUR STYLE OF PLAY?

I was a big Beckham fan growing up, I had the haircut and boots to match and started as a right winger believe it or not. But R9 was someone I watched, and I always tried to be composed in front of goal like him..

YOUR GOALSCORING FORM WAS INCREDIBLE LAST SEASON, WHAT WERE THE KEY FACTORS BEHIND THIS?

The main reasons behind the goals were the players I had playing around me and having a manager that knew my strengths and got the team playing to my strengths wherever we could. I put a lot of hard work into my game and push myself and others around me, it has worked for me in the Isthmian leagues for a number of seasons now and can hopefully do it again this season!

BEING GIVEN THE CAPTAINCY THIS SEASON MUST HAVE BEEN A GREAT FEELING, HOW DO YOU KEEP THE PLAYERS MOTIVATED IN DIFFICULT SITUATIONS?

I was made captain halfway through last season and it was something new for me, but I am used to it now, I’ve got to say I’m lucky to have other natural leaders in the squad at Ramsgate, like TJ the vice-captain, Lee Martin, Jay Leader, Tom Hadler, and I could probably list a few more! Motivating this squad is easy to be honest, we are very hungry to succeed as a group.

WHAT

ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE CURRENT SEASON?

I don’t have a goal target for this season, but I have 15 so far when writing this to you. I’m just looking to keep that going. My main focus is to be a good captain and ambassador of the club this season and give everything I can to help this club achieve promotion. It sounds like a typical answer I should give but I am part of a forward-thinking club and they have backed me a lot. I want to be a part of the squad that achieves something great for this club.

IT WAS A TOUGH SEASON LAST YEAR, NARROWLY MISSING OUT ON PROMOTION. DO YOU FEEL THE FA CUP RUN PLAYED AN EFFECT ON THE FORM AT THE END OF THE SEASON?

Well, we achieved the highest points tally Ramsgate FC have ever had I believe, or at least for a long, long time. Our points tally would have won the league for the previous 8 seasons before last season, so you have to tip your hat to Cray Valley who thoroughly deserved the title. Our FA Cup run made us stronger as a group if anything. I think we should use last season as inspiration and realise that the club did great things on and off the pitch - and now we need to push for great things again this season.

THE FA CUP RUN WAS INCREDIBLE LAST SEASON AND BROUGHT THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER, WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEING A PART OF THE SQUAD TO MAKE HISTORY?

It was really fun to be part of that FA cup run, I’ve never done so much media though! But I had the Golden ball I was challenging for which I missed out on by 1 goal, which was also fun. I was just proud of the boys and all the fans that came with us on that journey, I made friends and memories for life on the way.

YOU WON MANY ACCOLADES LAST SEASON, THE BARRY EAST TROPHY, SCORING THE MOST LEAGUE GOALS IN STEPS 1-4, SK KITS GOLDEN BOOT AWARD AT THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER’S NATIONAL GAME AWARDS, KENT ONLINE TEAM OF THE SEASON AND NONLEAGUE BIBLE PLAYER OF THE SEASON. WHICH ONE WAS YOUR FAVOURITE?

I was grateful for all of the personal accolades last season, I think the SK Kits golden ball - being recognised as the highest scorer in England steps 1-4 was something new for me, and I attended a fancy presentation at Plough Lane and got on stage in front of a lot of faces from Non-League, that one was special.

AFTER THE TURMOIL WITH MANAGERS PRESEASON, THE TEAM HAVE PERFORMED EXCEPTIONALLY. DO YOU FEEL THE RETURN OF BEN SMITH HAS PLAYED A BIG PART IN THE RUN OF FORM?

I think what Ben and his staff have done has gone under the radar. He came in 2 weeks before the season started and we only had 5 first team players at pre season training sessions, it wasn’t looking great, so to have built the squad we have now got is down to the hard work from Ben and James. Ben and his coaches have stepped up the pre-game analysis, coaching methods and preparation this season and so far it’s done us wonders. We are just trying to take it one game at a time and keep improving, we know we will face low points during the season, but getting through them as a group and keep improving is the main aim.

THE CLUB HAS BEEN DOING SOME AMAZING THINGS FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. BEING FROM THANET, HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR YOU TO HELP

GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY?

It is nice being a Thanet boy and seeing the work the club does in the community. The HAF program was amazing for the local area and a lot of our youth team players come to watch us and want to be involved in the first team side of things, which is brilliant. We are starting to see the rewards of that with some younger players being pushed into the first team now and I know some of our youth players are being nurtured to come through into the first team, it’s great to see. The other players in the first team recognise that and give up their time whenever they can to help the local area and youth players, that’s something I’m particularly proud of.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG PLAYERS ASPIRING TO BE

My advice to Thanet youngsters looking to be footballers would be play as many games as you can, learn the game from different positions and dedicate yourself to the game. If you’re good enough, the opportunities are there now for you, so keep improving and when you get a chance to showcase yourself don’t hold back.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR PERSONAL LIFE WITH YOUR PROFESSIONAL COMMITMENTS?

I have a young family which is the most important thing in my life. I’m also back and forward to London with work which I really enjoy, and sometimes that balance can be tough, but I have done 17 seasons in First Team squads now, so I am used to it. The support I get from my partner Sophie and from Ben Smith allows me to perform at the best level I can, so I owe a lot to them.

WE’D LIKE TO THANK JOE FOR TAKING THE TIME TO TALK TO US AND GIVE US AN INSIGHT INTO HIS CAREER AND WHAT IT IS LIKE PLAYING AT RAMSGATE FC.

NEWS UPDATE

JAMES LAWSON

RAMSGATE FC OWNER

AN UPDATE FROM RAMS OWNER JAMES

LAWSON:

IT HAS BEEN

ANOTHER BUSY MONTH AT RAMSGATE FOOTBALL CLUB -

BOTH ON AND OFF THE PITCH. ON THE PITCH, OUR FIRST TEAM CONTINUES TO GO WELL IN THE LEAGUE, WHILST OFF THE PITCH WE’RE AS BUSY AS EVER.

After another successful run in the cup competitions, I am very confident that we are well equipped with Ben, the management team and the players to challenge again this season. The 2-2 home draw against Burgess Hill was a fantastic advert for football at our level, and it’s great to see so many families attending week in, week out.

With regards to the playing squad, it’s great to have been able to sign another local lad in Billy Munday. Billy previously played for us in the same young team as TJ Jadama and Alfie Paxman. He returns to us after a hugely successful spell with Deal Town. With his dad being a Thanet football legend, it’s another sign of the talent that is out there in the local football scene - and we can’t wait to see Billy perform and grow with the group as the season goes on.

We also had the great occasion of hosting old friends Woking in the first round of the FA Youth Cup. Despite

a heavy defeat on the night, the boys gave a really good account of themselves in front of a super crowd of 421.

It was sad that the game had to be abandoned due to a serious injury sustained to a Woking player, but I would like to thank all of our staff (especially physio Georgina Dean) for their quick and efficient response.

Off the pitch, we have been very busy indeed. Our home game against Sevenoaks Town at the end of October saw a Halloween themed night, which was a huge success. It was also great to see mascots in Halloween fancy dress lead the players out onto the pitch!

We also have our upcoming remembrance event coming up too, which will see a bugler play The Last Post as well as a special ceremony on the pitch the mark the occasion. Whilst a more sombre occasion, it’s vitally important that we mark it in the right way.

Finally, during the half term week we ran our soccer schools in partnership with the TSC football academy. As always, the kids really enjoyed themselves, and it’s great to see them turn up in their numbers.

We also partnered with our very own TJ Jadama and Football IQ to pay for all of our teams to attend the superb ‘skill zone’ - an experience that the kids absolutely loved. TJ gets such a buzz from coaching - especially with local children, and he sums up the community spirit and involvement that we have as a football club.

Here’s to another successful month on the pitch, with a very busy run of fixtures including what will end up being eight games in the space of three weeks. Exciting times lie ahead!

STATEMENT FROM NEW SIGNING

BILLY MUNDAY

“I am extremely happy to be back at Ramsgate, especially as it was the club I played for as a young lad and made my first senior appearance.

It was a really tough and hard decision leaving Deal because it’s such a great club with great people and amazing fans, but I’m a local lad and everyone wants to play and be successful for your local team. The support has been fantastic here and it shows with how many fans were at Tuesday’s game and even better the ones that travelled on Saturday all the way down to Eastbourne. I’m excited for the rest of the season, and I hope I can bring excitement and energy to the team and help us achieve our goals. “

RAMSGATE WOMENS UPDATE TEAM

CHLOE WATTS MANAGER

WE CAUGHT UP WITH CHLOE WATTS TO GET AN OVERVIEW OF RAMSGATE WOMENS FC’S SEASON SO FAR...

Since the season has started, our squad has seen some new arrives into the squad and some departures, but we have come together as a team and have created some very good games, which have drawn a good crowd!

October has been a month of up and down results, some results didn’t go our way, but we always battled with true passion.

This led us to the ‘Kent FA Plate’ game where our squad showed real grit and determination. The game was very end-to-end and really could have gone either way. The game finished 0-0 and we had to go to penalties. We had beautiful penalty takers who placed them deep in the net, resulting in us walking away with a 3-2 win on penalties.

Shortly after, we travelled away to play Folkestone Invicta, top of the league. This team alone was beating teams by an incredible amount. But we held this team to only a 1-0 defeat, and the squad held them, and I couldn’t have been more proud of them!

The Rams now focus back onto the league and being in the next round of the Kent FA Plate on November 17th vs Biddenden Ladies at the home of Ramsgate Football club, and also in the Kent Divisional Cup over the next few months too.

UNFORTUNATELY THE RESULTS WE HAVE HAD IN OCTOBER HAVEN’T BEEN WHAT WE HAVE HOPED BUT THEY DO IN NO WAY REFLECT HOW HARD THE TEAM HAS BEEN WORKING, EVERY PLAYER HAS POORED THEIR HEART AND SOUL INTO EVERY GAME, THE DEDICATION AND DETERMINATION OF THIS TEAM GOES BEYOND EXPECTATIONS. WE HAVE SUCCESSFULLY SECURED OUR PLACE IN THE NEXT ROUND OF THE KENT FA PLATE WITH A WIN IN PENALTIES AGAINST FAVERSHAM TOWN. COULDN’T BE PROUDER OF THE LADIES FOR THEIR CONTINUOUS HARD WORK! THIS NOVEMBER WE AIM FOR THE WINS AS WE ARE DETER MINED TO START CLIMBING THAT TABLE! CAPTAIN JESS LAKER

MARGATE WOMENS TEAM NEWS FROM OCTOBER

MARGATE WOMENS APPOINT DAVID WOODGATE AS FIRST TEAM MANAGER

Dave said, “This is my first role as a manager of a Women’s team, but after taking the team Sunday against Kings Hill and witnessing a very professional and dominant performance it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down”.

“Over the past few months, I worked closely with previous manager Steph, and we shared the same vision on where we would like the women’s team to be, and I will continue to build on this model”.

Dave currently holds the Head of Girls position at Margate Youth FC, “I’ve coached at Margate Youth FC over the past 13 years, and have supported the development of players. I currently also coach the U13 girls, who have been very successful”.

Dave will be joined by George Adams as assistant manager, William O’Keeffe and Dan Barrett as first team coaches, and John Huffman as first aid support.

TFM THOUGHTS

We feel the appointment of David is a great move for the club as his knowledge of the game and his experience of developing players means he is going to be a great asset to the club.

We’ve been to a few games since David has taken charge and can see the team starting to gel and play some amazing football. They were unlucky against Maidstone and deserved at least a point, as there were spells of dominance that was unfortunately cancelled out by some sloppy defending.

After seeing the emphatic 5-0 win against Woodcombe, the team were on top form and put in an amazing performance showcasing what they can do. It’s apparent that whatever David is doing is working, as the team looked like the Margate Women FC from last season.

“IT’S GREAT TO SEE THE TEAM PERFORMING WELL AND ENJOYING THEIR FOOTBALL.”

© 2024 Oakley Photosport

WHAT DAVID HAS TO SAY...

“I was approached to become Manager of Margate Women FC after the previous manager stepped down.

I took charge of the away game against fellow strugglers Kings Hill, not knowing what to expect or what the reaction of the players would be; and also being my first time coaching a Women’s team with all my experience being around developing Youth players.

Although nervous, the game ran smoothly, and it felt right to agree to carry on managing the team going forward.

The results that the team had in the previous 5 league games was not a reflection of what I see on the pitch with the 2nd half being so one-sided it was hard for the players to motivate themselves.

We were unfortunate to lose to promotion hopefuls Maidstone. Some sloppy defending cost us but there was so much to like about the 2nd half while also showing myself and the other coaches what needs work.

After 2 wins and 1 loss in the first 3 games and confidence growing, we are hoping that we can have some great results and will be targeting a good cup run in the coming months.”

HARRISON HATFULL INTERVIEW - SUPERSTAR WINGER

WE CAUGHT UP WITH HARRISON TO DISCUSS HIS CAREER AND HIS FUTURE AT MARGATE FC

HOW DID IT FEEL TO GET A TRIAL AT BOLTON WANDERERS AND WHAT WAS THE EXPERIENCE LIKE?

Was a great experience over 2 spells with such a big club in the English game, and like many other trials when I was growing up they were unsuccessful due to many reasons, however I do think it made me a better player through the years as I used the feedback and setbacks to learn and make sure that any weaknesses were turned into strengths to further progress my game.

WHEN YOU WAS GROWING UP, WHO WHERE YOUR IDOLS

AND DID YOU EMULATE THEIR

STYLE

OF PLAY?

Growing up my main two idols were Frank Lampard and Marcelo. I just loved watching them play, and being a Chelsea fan the majority of us will say Lampard! I love Marcelo as a player and try to emulate their style of being a modern day full back that can do everything! I think he was one of the first full backs to really show that you can be effective going towards goal and also defending the goal! Which is definitely something I try to do each and every game through clean sheets and setting up chances the other end.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO GO BACK TO MARGATE FC, WAS BEN BECOMING MANAGER A DECIDING FACTOR?

I mean, yeah, Ben was a big factor in me coming back due to the relationship we have, not just on the pitch but also off. When I saw the squad he was putting together and we spoke about the way we want to play, it made my decision fairly easy to say yes. The coaching staff and the senior players in the squad are very clear on what they want and the standards they have each and every game, which is also something I like, but deep down I know where I’m happy and when your happy somewhere it also allows you to play your best football.

AWAY FROM FOOTBALL WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?

Away from football I’m still a very active person and I use my spare time for many things like doing stuff with family and friends. I recently got into golf even though I’m awful and I also spend a lot of time in the gym and also a lot of time shopping.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH DURING THE SEASON?

To maintain my physical health I do a lot of training away from football and it helps that my occupation is in fitness so there is a lot of gym work that goes into my weekly routines! Mentally I try to switch off from things and detach myself after games and stuff so that I can have a break from it all, as it’s important that you don’t let things get to you. So it’s key to have the time throughout the season to switch off completely and detach yourself for periods when away from football.

“HARRY HATFULLS MAGIC HE WEARS A MAGIC HAT, HE USED TO PLAY IN MIDFIELD AND NOW HE’S A FULL BACK . HE DRIBBLES WITH HIS LEFT FOOT , HE DRIBBLES WITH HIS RIGHT AND WHEN HE’S FLYING DOWN THE WING HE’LL MAKE YOU LOOK LIKE SH**E”

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR PERSONAL LIFE WITH YOUR PROFESSIONAL COMMITMENTS?

I have a very busy schedule away from football so sometimes it can be hard to balance things but like I said, once I’m away from the pitch I really try hard to detach myself and do things that I enjoy and that take my mind away from football.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT AS A FOOTBALLER TO DATE?

Again, would probably be the Kent cup, winning it, and playing at Gillingham in front of our fans! Hopefully there will be bigger memories on the way as I’m only 24 but we will see what the future brings!

WHAT ARE YOU GOALS FOR THE CURRENT SEASON?

Current goals for this season are definitely promotion whether that’s straight up or via the playoffs. That is the goal for all of us to get back to where we belong!

YOU ARE A FAN FAVOURITE, HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO HAVE THE BACKING OF THE ‘GATE FANBASE?

The fans are massive for us and they know it! When we are on form it’s because they are on form and backing us from the 1st minute to 90th. No matter the result we know we have they’re backing.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE-GAME AND POST-GAME ROUTINES?

Many! I always have a game day routine which starts from my pre match food 4 hours before kick-off, in the changing room I have a few superstitions for little things like putting

my right boot and shin pad on before my left. Stupid little things, and also making sure all my drinks and supplements are lined up in order. Nothing special after games I just make sure I am fully hydrated and eat enough good food to make sure I recover properly as soon as possible.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN YOUR FOOTBALL CAREER, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME IT?

My biggest challenges in football would be being told ‘no’ many times growing up and the best way to overcome it is dust yourself off and go again because eventually it will pay off.

Also, a massive challenge for me still to today is injuries, which has always been a problem of mine throughout seasons, but again to overcome this is the work you put in away from the pitch and training ground to make sure these things don’t happen!

WHAT’S YOUR GREATEST MEMORY AS A MARGATE PLAYER?

Greatest memory so far in a Margate shirt would be winning the Kent cup against Chatham and there being so many of our fans there to celebrate with us. By far the best memory!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG PLAYERS ASPIRING TO BE FOOTBALLERS?

Advice I would give would be to enjoy the journey, enjoy the highs and pay attention to the lows and make sure you learn from them. Focus on what you can control which is your game, your performance!

NEWS UPDATE

IBRAHIM OLUTADE

STATEMENT FROM MANAGER

BEN GREENHALGH:

OCTOBER CONTINUED TO BE ANOTHER REALLY BUSY MONTH OF WHICH ENTAILED 8 FIXTURES. IN THE SEVEN LEAGUE GAMES WE MANAGED TO GET 16 POINTS, WHICH INCLUDED FIVE WINS.

It did also present our first loss in the league, which was a tough one to take, but we have since gone on to win five league games on the spin. Burgess Hill away was the fixture where we came away with zero points, however we took the game to them and had the opportunities to take all three points but, frustratingly, got sucker punched ourselves. Burgess Hill were always a team that were going to be strong with the calibre of players they have brought together, and I also think they’ve gone slightly under the radar with this league being loaded up with some strong Kent teams, however the team from Sussex will be fighting to be in the top spots for sure by the end of the season.

We’ve had a few comings and goings this month with three players moving on and three players making their way in.

Lukas Franzen Jones had to make way after playing 15 games and only finding the net the one time.

Rossi Craig made way to Eroth to search for regular football after how strong Kai Garande has performed all season. James Bessey was looking for 90 minutes every week and was struggling with commitment to training and games.

We brought in Max Walsh. Max was Ashford’s second top goal scorer and a player we’d had at the Dartford Academy four years ago. He’s added good quality and contributed to a good number of goals since coming in.

Emmanuel Oke is a player that is currently with us getting his fitness back up. He’s a player that moved on from us two years ago into full time football but has put in some great performances with us since coming back in.

Most recently Ben Allen, who scored on his debut and is definitely going to add numbers to our attacking force with a player of his quality.

We’ve been on a great run but it’s a long season and it seems like teams need to keep winning at the top end of the table.

Our fans have shown incredible support since we took over and started to rebuild the squad and we’ve got a group that all have that desire to play for the football club and get an extra buzz when performing at Hartsdown Park. The buzz around Margate is back and hopefully we can continue to put in the performances that the club and the fans deserve.

BATTLE OF THE TOMS

WE ASKED TOM WRAY FROM MARGATE FC & TOM HADLER FROM RAMSGATE FC A SERIES OF GOALKEEPING RELATED
HERE IS WHAT THEY HAS TO SAY...

FIRST OFF, INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO THE READERS. HOW DID YOU GET INTO PLAYING GOALKEEPER?

TOM WRAY: Hi, my names Tom Wray, I started playing in goal when I was about 12, however started playing football when I was 6, playing right back.

TOM HADLER: Hi guys, I’ve been a goalie forever. I did my first training session and flew in front of everything, so Dad as my first manager decided that was the role for me!

OLIVER KAHN SAID, “GOALKEEPERS NEED AN ELEMENT OF INSANITY. WHO ELSE WOULD STAND THERE & ALLOW PEOPLE TO SHOOT BALLS AT HIS FACE & STILL THINK IT’S GREAT?” SO, FIRST QUESTION, WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS?

TOM WRAY: It’s very true you have to have a strong mentality to be a goalkeeper, it’s a very lonely position and one mistake can cost you games.

TOM HADLER: Insane is probably right, although I think we’re also generally the most intelligent so work that one out… No other position can be hero to zero quite like us either!

QUESTIONS,

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON ERROR GOALKEEPERS MAKE TODAY?

TOM WRAY: I would say playing out from the back, holding on to the ball for too long.

TOM HADLER: I’m blaming the footballs not the goalies! Footballs today wobble more than ever so if a goalies made a mistake then it’s defo not their fault #GKU

WHAT IS THE MOST UNDERSTATED SAVE, RESPONSIBILITY, OR ASPECT OF A GOALKEEPER TODAY?

TOM WRAY: I would say to be able to be a top goalkeeper, in this present time would be you need to be good with your feet, especially with clubs that like to play out, however at the end of the day if you keep the ball out of the net, no one complains.

TOM HADLER: Positioning is definitely the most understated as it can prevent you having to make certain saves or make them easier! If you can come and sweep up, deal with a cross, make a block, it all becomes less risky!

WHAT

INTANGIBLE ASPECT OF

GOALKEEPING

IS NECESSARY TO MAKE THE JUMP TO SEMI PROFESSIONAL?

TOM WRAY: Playing semi pro football is completely different to league football I’d say, being confident in coming for crosses also being confident around your goal is key even if you were to make a mistake.

TOM HADLER: Mindset is key to success in anything. Never too high and never too low, but always take the positives from situations. If it went well enjoy it but if it didn’t, learn from it.

GOALKEEPERS ARE TYPICALLY REGARDED AS HAVING THE MAKEUP TO BE GOOD COACHES. DO YOU THINK THIS IS ACCURATE? IS THIS SOMETHING YOU WOULD CONSIDER IN THE FUTURE?

TOM WRAY: I wouldn’t say they have the makeup to be a manager but definitely a goalkeeper coach, as having experience in the game as a goalkeeper has definitely benefited me with my previous coaching.

TOM HADLER: Most definitely. I have already begun my coaching journey having stopped playing full time football. I am head coach for a Football Academy in Canterbury that runs across 2 schools, so I think my experience as a goalie helps in that as I get to see the whole pitch in each game and how different tactics, setups and approaches work. I like to think I can motivate teams well too so will enjoy managing one day.

IS THERE EVER A TIME GETTING SCORED ON NEAR POST IS ACCEPTABLE?

TOM WRAY: It’s a typical saying goalkeepers can’t be beaten at their near post. I don’t 100% believe in that saying as I think it’s all about the finish of the player, its important your positioning in the goal is key.

. TOM HADLER: Yes and no… You never want to get beaten but to me it doesn’t matter if it’s near or far post, a goal is a goal!

CONTINUED ON PAGE 23 >>>

IN FIFTEEN TO TWENTY YEARS, HOW WILL THE GOALKEEPER EVOLVE?

TOM WRAY: I think it’s changing at this time, most goalkeepers at the top level are nearly as comfortable on the ball as outfield players, I think this will continue to happen.

TOM HADLER: It’ll probably be a robot and we’ll just sit behind the goal with a controller! I’d like to think it’s a similar role and similar game as it’s enjoyable to play and watch as it is!

HOW DO YOU FEEL THE SEASON IS GOING SO FAR FOR YOUR CLUB?

TOM WRAY: Very well, even though we started the league with three draws. I think we’ve been brilliant defensively and have shown in recent weeks what our attackers can do. I believe we have the squad to go and win the league.

TOM HADLER: So far so good. Ramsgate is a brilliant club with a big future that I’m excited to be part of, so we just need to stay on the same path and enjoy the journey as a team and fan base.

HOW TO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE LOCAL DERBIES, WHAT WAS IT LIKE BACK IN SEPTEMBER?

TOM WRAY: The derby was great, saving two penalties in one game is quite unheard of, so that was a massive positive for me.

TOM HADLER: Any derby day is great to be involved in. I’ve played in some big Kent ones for Maidstone and Gillingham so to add Thanet to that is great! The Kent cup really could/should have gone the other way, so we look forward to future games…

ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE BOXING DAY CLASH?

TOM WRAY: Looking forward to the Boxing Day derby, hoping for a sell-out, playing in front of two thousand plus people gives me a buzz.

TOM HADLER: As I mentioned about the derbies, most definitely! Complete that to continue the Christmas celebrations.

DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY CLEAN SHEETS YOU’VE HAD THIS SEASON? DO YOU THINK YOU’VE HAD MORE THAN YOUR RIVAL, THE OTHER TOM?

TOM WRAY: I believe I’ve had 11 clean sheets this season so far, which is a massive positive for the team, especially this early on.

TOM HADLER: I would say I think we’ve had more without cheating and looking. It was at 8 in 10 league games, so we need to have a few more to stay on a roll.

WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM YOUR RIVAL TOM? IF YOU HAD TO THINK OF ONE GOALKEEPING QUALITY OF YOUR RIVAL, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY MAKES THEM STAND OUT?

TOM WRAY: I haven’t seen Tom play too much, but I know he’s a great goalkeeper from seeing him at Maidstone when I was at Dartford. I would like to say my penalty record this season is unbeaten with 3 saved out of 3.

TOM HADLER: Tom is a good goalie and just starting out. I will only say experience is on my side and look forward to seeing how we both continue to progress.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING GOALKEEPERS?

TOM WRAY: To be as confident as possible, I believe confidence plays a massive part in your game, and without it comes mistakes. I would also say don’t worry about other opinions, focus on yourself.

TOM HADLER: Play as many games as you can, enjoy training, ignore idiots and just ride the wave. It won’t always go well but if you stick with it there are always more shots to save and games to play! Also, if you want to get better… Match Winner Academy is the place for you! Specific Goalie and Striker training, head to Instagram and TikTok to get in touch!

WE’D LIKE TO THANK THE TWO TOMS FOR THEIR TIME IN ANSWERING THE GOALKEEPING RELATED QUESTIONS... ROLL ON BOXING DAY!

MARGATE RECEIVE FOOTBALL FOUNDATION GRANT

THE CAGES

MARGATE FOOTBALL CLUB IS THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE THE UPCOMING REDEVELOPMENT OF ITS FOOTBALL FACILITIES AT HARTSDOWN PARK, SUPPORTED BY A GENEROUS GRANT FROM THE FOOTBALL FOUNDATION!

The project, set to commence in November, will see a significant upgrade to the club’s popular 5-a-side pitches, with improvements aimed at enhancing both player experience and community engagement!

The redevelopment plan includes resurfacing four of the existing 5-a-side pitches and converting the remaining pitches into a brand-new 7-a-side facility. The upgrades are designed to bring the facilities up to a modern standard, providing local players and the community with high-quality pitches to enjoy for years to come.

Ricky Owen, Chairman of Margate FC, expressed his gratitude:

“WE ARE INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL TO THE FOOTBALL FOUNDATION FOR THEIR SUPPORT. THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN IN THE WORKS FOR A LONG TIME, AND IT’S GREAT TO SEE ALL THE HARD WORK, ESPECIALLY FROM OUR GENERAL MANAGER, DENY WILSON, COME TO FRUITION. THESE UPGRADES REPRESENT A LONG-TERM INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE OF THE CLUB, HELPING TO BOOST REVENUE WHILE PROVIDING OUR COMMUNITY—PARTICULARLY THE YOUTH TEAMS—WITH FIRST-CLASS FACILITIES TO ENJOY.”

Work on the four smaller pitches is expected to be completed by Christmas, while the new 7-aside pitch will be ready by the end of January 2025. The project will be delivered by AS Sports Systems Ltd, chosen through a thorough tendering process. In addition to the pitch improvements, the redevelopment will also include upgrades to lighting and goal systems.

For further updates on the project’s progress, please follow Margate FC on social media.

TFM THOUGHTS

We are over the moon that this development is happening, the cages have been needing a revamp for years and having two 7-aside pitches will be great for larger games!

ROBERT SULLIVAN, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE FOOTBALL FOUNDATION, SAID:

“THE FOOTBALL FOUNDATION IS WORKING CLOSELY WITH OUR PARTNERS – THE PREMIER LEAGUE, THE FA AND GOVERNMENT – TO TRANSFORM THE QUALITY OF GRASSROOTS FACILITIES IN ENGLAND BY DELIVERING PROJECTS LIKE THIS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.”

“GOOD QUALITY PLAYING FACILITIES HAVE A TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT ON PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH AND PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER AND STRENGTHENING LOCAL COMMUNITIES.”

MINSTER FOOTBALL CLUB AN INTRODUCTION TO

COLIN HOLDEN CHAIRMAN

RECENT HISTORY AND ACHIEVEMENTS

With Minster FC being one of the oldest clubs registered with the Kent FA, we continually refer back to our history and tradition and are very proud to represent a club that has been in existence since 1911. For many years the club has fielded adult teams in the Thanet and Canterbury Leagues – mostly Saturday football – with a strong history of local players from the village and surrounding areas. To this day there is still a strong local contingent of current players representing 3rd and 4th generations of family links with the club.

The past 10 years has seen the regrowth of the club - initially with the addition of a veterans team. With competitive success in the Thanet League (veterans team) and Canterbury & District League (first team), the club successfully applied to enter the Kent County Football League for the 2019/20 season whilst adding a reserve team to remain in the Canterbury League. Three promotions in consecutive seasons had seen the first team rise from Division 3 to the Kent County League Premier Division. During this period the reserve team had also been promoted to the Kent County League in 2020 and are currently established in Division 1 following their own series of promotions.

With the club continuing to attract players to the squads, a 3rd team was added in 2020 to allow young players to gain experience in competitive football whilst allowing some of the older players to continue enjoying playing football for Minster – this 3rd team remains in the Canterbury & District League and now compete in the Premier Division of that League.

This recent club success to a certain extent was kicked off with the Canterbury Premier Division title in 2018 along with the League Cup and a Kent Junior B Cup win in that same season completing an excellent treble. With League titles not being officially awarded during some incomplete seasons due to the covid lockdowns, our more recent club successes have been concentrated on the cup competitions for the first team. In 2022 the first team claimed the Kent League’s senior trophy – The Bill Manklow Inter Regional Challenge Cup. In 2024 the first team achieved the highest honour in the club’s history by winning the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield and thereby qualifying for the Kent Senior Trophy this 2024/25 season.

With our first team achieving 2nd place in our debut season in the 2022/23 Kent Premier Division, the club investigated future opportunities in the league above – being the South Counties East Football League (SCEFL). In order to qualify for this Step 6 of the National League System, the club has to play football at an FA graded stadium. As with other clubs at our level, we looked at opportunities of a ground share arrangement and reached an agreement with Ramsgate FC to host our first team home fixtures at the WW Martin Community Stadium (Southwood) for 2023/24 season.

This saw the club achieve a greater following both during matchdays and online. During discussions in relation to the continuation of our agreement into the 2024/25 season, Ramsgate FC confirmed that some additional conditions would need to be put in place for us to continue playing at Southwood – these were conditions that we could not agree to in relation to how our club and our teams would be managed. We therefore could not continue at Southwood and for this current season we are back at our natural home at Minster Recreation Ground.

The intention is for our first team to find an FA graded ground share arrangement for the 2025/26 season and we continue to have discussions on this.

In addition to the growth of adult football within Minster FC, the club now field three youth teams at U15, U16 & U18 age groups for the coming season. These teams compete in the Kent Youth League, East Kent Youth League and the Faversham & District Youth League and have become an integral part of our club.

The club now fields 7 teams across all age groups with over 200 players registered for the club. Whilst Minster FC will look to steadily grow and increase opportunities for all ages and abilities to play football, the continued focus is on enjoyment, friendships and supporting the community.

PROJECT TALKING FOOTBALL IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MINSTER FC

For over a century, Minster Football Club has been an integral part of our village life. We prioritise community support and strive to provide opportunities for young people to engage in sports, build friendships, learn the values of teamwork, and support those less fortunate.

Project Talking Football was established in 2022 in response to the conclusion of funding for the “Head In The Game” pilot project. Created by participants in collaboration with Minster FC, and funded by local businesses and grants, this community football initiative offers local men a chance to engage in sport, share their experiences, and boost their mental health. Sessions are held on Monday evenings in Minster, providing a supportive environment for men to open up about their week. Our Chairman, along with other PTF coaches, actively hosts these weekly sessions. Occasionally, some of our players and coaches drop in to assist with training drills and experience the project firsthand.

A recent evolution of the Project is that it is now integrated with the national mental health organisation – Rethink Mental Health – who will provide finance management services, access to further funding opportunities and also more importantly additional support for the group as and when needed in terms of access to training, guidance and advice.

Rethink Mental Illness is a leading British charity dedicated to improving the lives of people severely affected by mental illness. Founded in 1972, the organisation provides a wide range of services, including local support groups, housing, and community-based services. Their mission is to bring about meaningful change through expert advice, information, and groundbreaking campaigns. Rethink Mental Illness also works to end the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness. They offer support to tens of thousands of people every year, helping them through crises, live independently, and feel that they do not have to face mental illness alone.

This recent “upgrade” to Project Talking Football allows Minster FC to continue with this great scheme and provide further stability and future planning. It has all come a long way and our thanks from Minster Football Club go to John Gallagher at RMI as well as our own leadership team of Kyle, Steve and Connor.

Future community projects include offering disability football sessions at Minster. Starting in 2025, the club plans to support and host local organisations dedicated to making football accessible to everyone.

ROB PUGH ON WHY PEOPLE PLAY

WALKING FOOTBALL

“LOVED THE EARLY EDITIONS OF THANET FOOTBALL MAGAZINE AND WAS PARTICULARLY PLEASED TO SEE THE ARTICLES ON WALKING FOOTBALL.”

As one of the original 6 who started at Hartsdown back in 2014 at the age of 53 and is now playing in goal for Ramsgate Over 60’s, the sport has played a big part in my life for over a decade, so thought I would try and explain why the game has become so popular.

In my experience no other sporting activity gives you such a knowledge of what can go wrong with the human body once you get over 50. The first 5 or 10 minutes of our twice weekly sessions at Southwood invariably consist of updates

Secondly, more seriously and certainly beneficially, playing Walking Football allows you to meet people who are passionate about their Football. So many of our chats, laughs and observations at Ramsgate concern the fortunes of the teams we follow. Now unfortunately and it must be something to do with the air or water down here so many of those at Ramsgate follow Chelsea while I am the only follower of Brighton and Hove Albion. There are, it is fair to say, a few misguided folk who pledge their allegiance to such as Manchester United, Spurs, Arsenal, Liverpool or West Ham. We even have a long-standing Gas head [Bristol Rovers] amongst us. Many of us of course support either Ramsgate or Margate, or like me follow both, much to my son’s disgust as he is only part of the blue side of Thanet.

Thirdly, of course playing Walking Football is a great way to keep fit. Now in goal I still get to cover a fair distance collecting shots that go wide or high [no names mentioned] PRE FLIGHT DRINK AT HEATHROW BEFORE GOING TO PORTUGAL

Next Walking Football gives you the chance to belong to a club and team. This has been a big thing for me. From my late 30’s to early 50’s when I didn’t play much Football I missed that, despite playing several other sports. Like all sports, Walking Football gives everyone the chance to play at their own level and for their own reasons. There are league and cup competitions galore now as the sport continues to grow but if you just want to play within your own club you can.

Even at nearly 64 Walking Football for me provides a challenge . I want to improve as a goalkeeper every time I step on to the pitch. I want to make more saves, let in less goals, contribute to more team victories. I know this competitive thing varies hugely among those who play but to me it is very important. At Ramsgate everybody is encouraged to enjoy the sessions and to contribute to their team as much as possible.

There is a big social side at Ramsgate too, away from just turning up to play. Most of us like a beer and an evening out together. We have travelled to both Portugal and Spain to play in tournaments while there have been canal boat tours stopping off to play other teams along the way. Some meet up for a round of Golf as well.

Some say nostalgia is not always helpful but for me Walking Football often takes me back to my younger days and is another reason I love it. Yes the game is different in some ways such as the speed of movement, height of the ball, amount of physical contact, but it is still Football adjusted for those who are a bit older in body but not spirit.

Hopefully the above scribbling might have convinced a few more people in Thanet to give the game a go. If so, there are 3 long established clubs. Bay City Strollers and Margate both hold evening sessions while at Ramsgate we play on Wednesday and Friday mornings at Southwood, which obviously suits better for those who are retired or who work part-time. There is both rivalry and true friendship between the clubs and several players turn up at more than one to maximise their opportunity to get a game

KARINA BARKER CLUB SECRETERY

WOMEN’S

FOOTBALL HAS BEEN ON AN UPWARD TRAJECTORY FOR A FEW YEARS NOW, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE SUCCESS OF THE LIONESSES IN THE 2022 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS.

That legacy has led to new girl’s teams springing up all over the place, with many youngsters hoping to one day emulate the likes of Williamson, Russo and Toone.

But what about those women who are way, way past school age but still want to play? What about the mums who spend every weekend freezing on the touchlines, cheering their children on? Why can’t they play too?

That question was at the forefront of my mind when, in 2017, at the age of 41, I decided to start a football team for women like me.

Women who may have played before, but maybe not. Women who wanted to take part in a team sport, get fitter and most importantly, have fun. So that’s what I did, and that’s how Ramsgate FC Ladies Vets (aka the Thanet LEGends) came to be.

First, some background. I was never sporty at school, in fact I hated PE most of all. But I always loved football, and growing up with two brothers, enjoyed kickabouts. My primary school was on a very steep hill so I quickly learned about the importance of changing ends and defence. Forty

years later, I still naturally graduate towards defence and tend to play at left back.

When I started at my all-girl’s secondary school in the late 1980s, that was it, no more football. Girls simply did not play. PE was all about netball and hockey, and it would never have occurred to me to try and find a club outside school, it just wasn’t what you did. It’s worth remembering that this was less than 20 years after the FA lifted its 50year “ban” on women playing at any affiliated grounds or pitches, so the role models today’s girls have simply weren’t there for us.

I played briefly at university but soon found that my levels of fitness were nowhere near that of everyone else, so I gave up.

Then over 20 years later, I saw a news report on BBC South East Today about Crawley Old Girls FC, a group of female Crawley Town fans in their 40s and 50s who decided they wanted to play too and secured club backing to start their own team. That was the kickstart I needed.

I immediately started searching for a team near me. I found one, set up by a friend in Canterbury, but I couldn’t make the sessions - so I decided to start my own.

My first port of call was Facebook – I put up a post asking if any like minded ladies were interested, and I received a message from a coach offering to train us. I met the coach on a very cold Tuesday evening in Dane Park. No one else turned up. The coach asked “How did you advertise it? Maybe we need to try a different tactic.”

In my excitement, I had completely forgotten to tell anyone else about this new idea I’d had. I sent out a few emails, and posted a few times on Facebook.

The next week, a colleague of mine joined us, then brought a friend and another lady who’d seen us on Facebook. And the rest, as they say….

Nearly 8 years later, we still meet every Tuesday night, except now it’s at Margate FC cages (they have floodlights and everything) and we regularly get around 18-20 women from all walks of life, with various levels of experience. Some of our youngest players still play for local ladies first teams, others haven’t played since childhood. Originally we aimed ourselves at over 40s but found that ruled out many younger players, so we now have an open age policy, with our current squad ranging from 23-61, and with players from as far afield as Serbia and Canada. The emphasis is always, always on friendship and fun and if you are ever in the area on a Tuesday, you will hear us laughing long before you see us. We also all have nicknames for each other, chosen as a group, never unkind, but you may hear those shouted out too!

We have seen various identity changes over the years –initially we were affiliated to the now disbanded Thanet Colts, whereas we are now attached to Ramsgate FC but in every guise, we have found the Thanet football community to be supportive, encouraging and welcoming.

There is currently no East Kent league for women’s vets, so for the past 6 years we have entered a team into the Kent Futsal League, which again attracts teams of women from all backgrounds, but mostly those 30 and above.

When I asked some of the team to tell their stories, I was struck by the variety. Some, like Lisa Wickings (Dot), 52, played throughout the 80s and were keen to get back into it. Sue Miller (Spud), 61, played “in the 70s when women’s

football wasn’t even a thing” and was introduced by her friend and stalwart Jeanette Brown (Flash), 53, who wasn’t

LADIES VETS CONTINUED...

In contrast some of the younger players, like Max Campbell (Pepsi), 28 hated sport at school but found us via social media and are now firmly part of the team. I could go on and on, but this is only a small magazine and there are lots of other great teams to read about too.

WE ARE ALWAYS, ALWAYS OPEN TO NEW MEMBERS, OF ANY AGE, OVER 18, ANY ABILITY AND ANY PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE. TO FIND OUT MORE, FIND US ON FACEBOOK AT THANET LEGENDS WOMEN’S FOOTBALL TEAM (AFFILIATED WITH RAMSGATE FC).

WE LOOK FORWARD TO MEETING YOU!

RAMSGATE U10’S ORANGE YOUTH TEAM FOCUS

RAMSGATE

FC U10 ORANGE HAVE BEEN A TEAM FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS. FORMING FROM PLAYERS WHO AT 5 AND 6 YEARS OLD ATTENDED SOCCER SCHOOL ON A SATURDAY MORNING.

The coaches are Nick, Steve and Adam. All three have played locally. Now that the legs have given up for Sunday League, they turn their focus to coaching young players. With a number of years coaching between them they are looking to harness the positive vibe that’s currently around Ramsgate FC, feeding this positive ethic into the team.

The team philosophy revolves around playing football together without fear of failure - Win.. Lose.. Just Enjoy the Game and ‘RAMSGATE ARE MASSIVE’ is often said between the players in pre match chats.

The team have had some great moments over the past three seasons, representing the club as mascots on several occasions, meeting their favourite players and being involved in the recording of Ramsgate FC Club Songs during the fantastic FA Cup run last year. Pre-Season last year, a visit to a training session by up-and-coming keeper Archie gave players a taste of the super stars they can become. The connection between this clubs First Team players and Youth setup is what community and football family is all about, it inspires the young players to dream big. The players love being part of a club that really embraces the youth setup and allows them to be and feel part the team.

The team has to a say a huge Thank You to Brackenborough Plastering. There are ever rising costs for running a team and youth clubs often turn to parents to fund equipment such as cones, bibs and a match kit is the largest expense. Brackenborough Plastering last year stepped up and offered to sponsor the team. A brand-new match kit was provided meaning the team can look the part and wearing the same kit as their Ramsgate FC hero’s, again linking them directly to the main first team.

So, three years ago when the team came together without doubt would be considered a development side. The first season at 6/7 years old, was truly a fantastic start. There were just 5 players, all from soccer school. Luckily all the boys got along really well, and they hit the ground running enjoying playing football, and as team having some days out paintballing and going to each other’s birthday parties. Moving to 8/9 years old, the squad has doubled in size and was really starting to take shape. Players starting to realise what they see as their best position; some luckily being picked for their school teams. During the midseason festivals and preseason tournaments the team were so unlucky not to get a winners medal, making two finals only to lose on penalties. The u9 season ended with several beach days out and a cracking day at Boonies, although mega muddy and soaked through. The players were put through their paces on the army course. The day ended with their end of season presentation where all got individual awards to celebrate the season gone by.

So here we are at u10. The difference in the boys general play and understanding of the game is amazing. This development is not only down to the coaches but down to enthusiasm shown by the players, who turn out for training week in week out and always seem to give their best effort. Behind all of this as coaches we thank the parents and families of the players. Without them ensuring boots, shin pads, gloves aren’t lost… without them driving to some of the most obscure pitches in the world there would be no team - as parents and families your support means everything.

WE COACHES AND I’M SURE THE PARENTS ARE SO PROUD OF THE LADS IN THIS TEAM

My favourite player is Benny Bioletti as he’s quick at dribbling and has skills.”

“I love playing for my team as I get to play with my friends, score goals and make assists.

I like playing for Ramsgate fc because I get my own season pass as I love going to the games. I also love being a mascot for Ramsgate.

FREDDIE

FOOTBALL FAN ZONE COLUM SHARPE

I’VE BEEN A RAMSGATE FAN FOR A LONG TIME, GOING BACK TO THE JIMMY WARD DAYS.

Back then we were taking a minibus load away, now we are taking a coach load, even sometimes for the big games a couple of coaches. It shows the true growth of the club! I must admit back years ago I fell out of love with the club and how it was, but I’d say the past 5 years I’ve really loved going to watch Ramsgate with my dad and my mates. To see the crowd back then of not even 100 to an average of like 700 and most games 1000, is crazy and is credit to all behind the club and what they do! We are massive at the end of the day!

I’d go as far as to say Ramsgate has helped me massively with my mental health. Going to watch the team with my dad it just switches everything off in the head, being there watching the lads and seeing the players, being around my mates and the fans in a class environment has had a great impact for me and I’m sure for many other people! I have to give a special shout out to my mate Tom Hadler, easily my favourite player at the Rams , always has time for the fans which all players do and that’s what is different about the Rams team the last few years is the real togetherness with the fans and players!

My favourite away day is easily Totton away and Wimbledon, that was different level, but then the home games were class in the FA cup run, seeing so many there was amazing.

Ramsgate away days are special for me. As well as it’s the same fans and very family like, it’s always a great day out with them all and we have a great laugh! And every team’s fans we’ve been to on the FA cup run and other clubs have all said we are the best fans they’ve had there - and that is quality and really does show where it’s at, Ramsgate is very much on the map!

Props to Ben Smith, his staff and the team keep smashing it and let’s get that league title! Let’s have it!!

Also, a shout out to James Lawson for what he’s done.

THE PHOTOGRAPH...

Colum Sharpe was the man responsible for the incredible photograph that we used in the October issue (pictured right) from the Ramsgate vs Margate game in September.

We contacted Colum after seeing this fantastic shot on Facebook and asked if we would be able to use it and share on our social media platforms.

This created a conversation where we found out Colum’s passion for Ramsgate FC and the way the club has helped his mental health and immediately knew we had to feature him in the magazine.

Colum is such a big fan that when travelling back from seeing Ramsgate FC play Brackley Town away, he broke down on the A34 and didn’t get home until the following morning at 4am by train.

This type of passion for the club isn’t spoken about enough, the tales of match days on and off the pitch, as everyone has their own experiences and reasons to go to games.

As from season 2024/25 Ashford fc has agreed a ground share agreement with Ramsgate fc and all home games and training will be on the new 4g artificial pitch at Ramsgate.

This is a significant achievement for the club especially with the all weather advantages of an artificial surface which will pay immense dividends in forthcoming future fixtures.

A name change of the club to RAMSGATE ATHLETIC was sought for the 2024/25 season in order to galvanise the public support from the local Thanet community. This name change resurrected the original Ramsgate name which was in use up to 1972.

The policy for Athletic is to bring on the abundant local young talented footballers to mens competitive football by playing in the Kent County Premier Division, and beyond

MY JOURNEY IN SUNDAY LEAGUE FOOTBALL BEGAN WAY BACK IN THE SUMMER OF 1991, HAVING JUST TURNED 16 THERE WAS NO FURTHER RUNGS ON THE LADDER AT YOUTH LEVEL SO MY DAD ENROLLED MINNIS BAY FC INTO THE OLD THANET SUNDAY PREMIER LEAGUE.

Going from playing with boys the same age and size as me to coming up against grown me who told me they were going to eat me for dinner as I marked him at a corner was certainly eye opening! We survived the first season, and the following season finished as runners-up and lifted the Intermediate Cup. After a few seasons together, the younger boys moved away to university and some older, more experienced heads joined the club. Over the next few years, I had the pleasure of being a part of some incredible sides in local football, Margate Athletic, Birchington USC and Cherry Orchard, all blessed with some memorable players that were a joy to share the pitch with. When you’re sharing a changing room with the likes of Paul Goodfellow, Billy Grainger, Stuart Wells, Mick O’Neill, Dave Bambridge, Archie Ward, Ben Hancock, Rudi Durling to name a few, then you’ve not done too badly. I felt particularly lucky to have played in the era when Active Signs were winning back-to-back Kent Cups, they were a fantastic team and I loved playing against them, even managing to score on one occasion, a rare event for someone who probably scored less than double figures in my 20+ years of playing.

SUNDAY LEAGUE LEGEND

MATT DIXON

Around 2002 I dropped down to play for Granville Cinema and took on the role of the elder statesman amongst the new wave of youngsters starting out in adult football, this was around the same time as I met my wife, Terri, I was fortunate enough to reach a Cup Final just two months after we got together, excitedly I got her to come along and watch the game….she was there to see me score an own goal in the first five minutes as we lost in extra time, her one and only time she ever saw me play. A thoroughly enjoyable couple of seasons followed before my first Management role came about when I took over the reigns at The Bell Inn FC, cup success in our first season was followed by a change of club name back to my original roots of Minnis Bay, promotion to the Premier Division was achieved over the next few seasons before sadly folding. A few more seasons as Club Secretary with clubs such as Adeva Athletic and AFC Acorn where I finally hung up my playing boots at the end of the 2012-2013 season. Minnis Bay reformed for season 2014-2015 winning the third division but players leaving meant the side didn’t see the start of the following season. At the end of the 2011-2012 season, I was approached by the then League Secretary of the Thanet Sunday Football League, Nigel Pope, asking if I’d be interested in taking over from him the following season. I worked alongside Nigel for the 2012-2013 season before taking over as League Secretary at the AGM in June, a few days later I was voted onto the Kent FA Council too.

The summer of 2015 saw me asked to assist with the admin at Bradstow Albion, one of the best decisions I ever made. Over the next four seasons, I was part of one the most successful teams in the past decade which culminated in winning the Kent Sunday Premier Cup at Maidstone United, hands down the best day of my long football career.

MATT DIXON LEAGUE SECRETERY

MATT DIXON CONTINUED...

Bradstow continued for a few more seasons, winning the Challenge Cup along the way before time caught up with several players who had won plenty of medals over the years and decided to retire, a rebrand of the club saw a name change to Saints FC who went on to lift the Premier Division League trophy last season. This completed my Sunday league goal of winning every major Sunday league honour, Premier Division Title, Challenge Cup, Premier Division Cup and Kent Cup, all these medals sit proudly in my Office at home.

January 2016 saw another dream come to reality as I secured a job working in football when I landed a role with the Kent County Football Association as a football services administrator, moving onto the role of Competitions Officer in March 2018, a role I still hold today. I feel incredibly lucky to get to work in the football industry, something that has been such a big part of my life over the past 30 years.

I’ve faced many challenges in my role as League Secretary, the most recent being the Covid-19 pandemic. Being without football during the summer months is manageable, a chance to recharge the batteries after a long season whilst preparing for the next one but when the unknown arises it was a tough period for people who rely on football as their escape each Sunday, no-one knew when football would return and what it would be like when it did. Five months without football ensued and when it did return it was in very strange circumstances. Looking back, it was tough for all concerned and make us appreciate the game even more.

I’m pleased to be part of the ongoing re-developments of Jacky Bakers in the hope we can turn the venue into a modern place that people want to play football and drag those youngsters out of bed on Sunday morning to experience what I’ve had the pleasure of for the past 30 years.

The best part of being involved in local football is the many, many friends I’ve made, some dating back to when I first started 30 years ago. There is a wonderful feeling to walk around Jacky Bakers on a Sunday and be stopped by so many people that recognise me and want a chat.

I’ve been very lucky to share so many experiences over the past 30 years and all of them with my dad, he’s been with me for all my successes, and I’ve got so many wonderful memories to cherish of lifting silverware with him, sitting on the league committee with him as Vice Chair and my mum as Treasurer is an honour.

When my turn comes to hand over the reigns of Sunday football to the next person, I hope to be saying that I’ve done a good job for the people of Thanet. There are many good people in Thanet, all doing a great job in local football….long may it continue.
