After so many organizational hiccups throughout the last couple decades, the philosophy of Servant Leadership is back in vogue across both business and non-profit sectors, and even larger companies like Southwest Airlines and Starbucks are leading the charge. Join Dr. Withers as he shares the history of this management/ leadership philosophy, how it can be better implemented and measured in your organization.

The American environmental movement was timely and necessary - but is fifty years old and has failed to mature beyond a three-word vision of ‘Stop Doing That’.

The public body that gives us the consent to operate is rightfully concerned about their environment. Lacking accurate background information, the public has emotion driven responses to environmental issues. With a strong foundation of reality – and a dose of humor – I discuss how we must put ourselves in the public’s shoes to understand and respect their concerns and then present society with a new vision of environmentalism based upon hope instead of fear and science instead of emotion. By leading this discussion, our social license to operate can and will be maintained.

Dr. Bill Withers has nearly three decades of management and leadership experience in both business and education, and he is a twotime presenter at the International Conference on Business in Honolulu.

Bill has both studied and served organizations such as Proctor & Gamble, Ritz-Carlton, Disney, Four Seasons, Starbucks, and Southwest Airlines, and he was a contributing writer to three books in the areas of leadership and customer service.

After an early career working in media and marketing, Bill spent 20 years in higher education, training, and development at Wartburg College where he was recently awarded Faculty Emeritus-status by their board upon his recent retirement there.

Today Bill serves on the executive-leadership team at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines, the largest mainline protestant church of its type in all of North America.

Dr. Withers continues to specialize in the areas of public relations, customer service, organizational change, and leadership.

Bruce Vincent is a third-generation logger from Libby, Montana, and coowner of the community outreach firm Environomics.

Bruce speaks throughout the United States and the world, testifies on resource issues before Congress and has appeared on several news programs such as “60 Minutes”. Bruce has been named Timberman of the Year in Montana, National Forest Activist of the Year, received the inaugural Presidential Preserve America Award from President Bush, has been named ‘Keeper of the 10th’ by Women in Farm Economics and received American Agri-Women’s Veritas Award. His recently completed book, “Against The Odds”, highlights his life journey and identifies a path forward for rural America.

Bruce has been married to his wife Patti Jo for 45 years and has four children and 15 grandchildren. His current activities represent a family commitment to responsible environmentalism.

SESSIONS & SPEAKERS TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2022 10:10-11:00am Research Update: Learn the Latest Science on Improving Sod Tensile Strength Dr. Aaron Patton Professor, Horticulture & Landscape Architecture, Purdue University Sod producers have a wealth of knowledge about coolseason sod production but there are still new things for us to learn. Recent research has explored the influence of different agronomic practices on the establishment, growth, and sod tensile strength of cool-season grasses. In this session, we’ll explore some of the latest research findings on what is and is not important to producing cool-season sod. We’ll discuss Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, the different fine fescues, and cool-season mixtures.

Dr. Aaron Patton earned his bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University, and his master’s and doctorate from Purdue University. Aaron serves on the faculty at Purdue University. His extension responsibilities are to provide education to Indiana’s $1.8 billion turfgrass industry.

His research responsibilities include planning, implementing, and leading projects devoted to managing quality lawn, sod, golf, and sports turf while reducing management inputs. Patton’s research interests focus on weed ecology and control, warm-season grasses, and agronomic practices in turfgrass systems. He teaches the senior level turfgrass science course at Purdue University and mentors undergraduate and graduate students. Aaron also serves as the Executive Director of the Midwest Regional Turf Foundation.

Dr. Casey Reynolds Dr. Casey Reynolds has been the Executive Director of TPI since May 2017, and prior to that he served as Assistant Professor & Extension Specialist at Texas A&M University and as a researcher at North Carolina State University. He is a passionate advocate for the many benefits of natural grass in urban and suburban environments worldwide. Since joining TPI in 2017, he has been the author or co-author of over 200 written publications and an invited speaker at over 60 events in 5 countries and 14 U.S. states.

Members of the U.S. Natural Grass Sod Industry have put forth a research and promotion program, aka “checkoff program”, for sod that could go up for voting as soon as 2022. This session will cover the details of the program, current progress and updates, and what it could mean for the industry if passed. Agricultural research and promotion programs have a proven history of improving the market position of a commodity by expanding markets, increasing demand, conducting market and scientific research, and promoting industry initiatives and activities.

Packer Principal, JPH Law Lynn Jacquez’s professional background spans private law practice, government relations, and service in the Federal government. Upon graduation from the University of Notre Dame School of Law, she came to Capitol Hill to serve as counsel for the House Judiciary Committee. In her

work for its Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees, and International Law, she had primary responsibility for the drafting and processing of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA) and refugee reauthorization legislation. After her tenure on the Committee, Ms. Jacquez entered private practice with Heron, Burchette, Ruckert & Rothwell, and later with McAuliffe, Kelly & Raffaelli. In 1992, she helped form the government relations firm which became CJ Strategies in 2006 and in 2011 established the law firm of CJ Lake LLC where she is now managing partner and Principal.

In her legal practice, Ms. Jacquez represents employers in individual and class action litigation involving MSPA, wage and labor and immigration law. She counsels employer clients on statutory and regulatory compliance with immigration laws including I-9 compliance and temporary foreign worker visa program compliance.

She represents organizations seeking regulatory and legislative reform to address workforce issues and is actively engaged on behalf of employers in developing immigration program reform legislation.

Ms. Jacquez is a member of the District of Columbia Bar. Ms. Jacquez received her undergraduate degree from L’Université d’Aix-Marseilles and holds a law degree from the University of Notre Dame School of Law. She may be reached at ljacquez@cj-lake.com Shawn Packer is the Principal member of JPH Law, a D.C. based firm focusing on the needs of employers dealing with programs and investigations administered by the Federal government. Mr. Packer comes to JPH after serving for 8 years in several roles within the Federal government.

Mr. Packer worked in the Office of the Solicitor at the Department of Labor as an AttorneyAdvisor to the Solicitor. During his time in the Office of Solicitor, Mr. Packer worked on a variety of legal issues but specifically focused on the immigration programs administered by the Department, to include Wage and Hour investigations in the H visa programs and working with the Office of Foreign Labor Certification on the development and issuance of new forms, regulations, and technology platforms.

Secretary on all policy issues regarding the Department’s foreign labor certification programs, including interactions with stakeholders and congressional offices, developing regulations, and negotiating multinational labor relations agreements with the Northern Triangle countries of Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

Prior to Mr. Packer’s time at the Department of Labor, he served as Special Assistant to a Board Member of the National Mediation Board, a Federal labor relations agency handling collective bargaining agreements and labor disputes between railroads, airlines, and their employees. any size can incorporate, whether profit- or non-profit can implement.

Industry reliance upon a narrow range of chemistries has led to wide-spread herbicide resistance. Learn how to combat herbicide resistance by incorporating nonchemical control strategies. Leverage plant biology to your advantage and prevent resistance through a better understanding of herbicide site-of-action rotation and combination.

Dr. Jay McCurdy is an associate professor and extension specialist in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences.

He received a B.S. from the University of Tennessee-Martin, a M.S. from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and a Ph.D. from Auburn University. He has 20 years of experience in the turfgrass and landscape industry. His research has resulted in more than 30 peer-reviewed publications and numerous trade-journal articles. Current research projects include precision assessment of turfgrass growth and development, weed ecology and management, herbicide resistance, and wildlife habitat inclusion within the built environment.

In 2018, Mr. Packer took on the role of Senior Counselor to the Assistant Secretary of the Employment and Training Administration at the Department of Labor. In this role, Mr. Packer advised the Department and Assistant

LeMay, A-G Sod Farms President Unlike a lot of our members, I was not born with sod running through my veins, but the love of farming was. I started working on the 85,000 acres farm my father managed at the age of Thirteen. Chopping weeds turned into driving every piece of equipment on the farm to learning from our inhouse farmers and agronomist how to grow Seventeen different crops.

I attended and graduated from California State University, Fresno in the spring of 1981 with a BS in Agronomy. My first fulltime job was with Salyer American as a farm manager of 20,000 acres of mostly sandy sprinkler irrigated crops. While attending Fresno State, I met my wife of 39 years, Valerie. We have three sons, all of which are married and collectively have blessed us with three wonderful daughters and five grandchildren.

In 1987 I went to work for Capital Ag Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Prudential Insurance Group, as an Executive Farm Manager. I was in charge of managing, selling and purchasing agricultural properties and assets in the five western states. At my peak I was overseeing 45,000 acres of assets.

In 1994 I was offered by and accepted a position with A-G Sod Farms where I currently work and have for the last 27.5 years. I currently, along with Joel Addink, oversee the operations of Six sod farms in three states. No hobbies but I do enjoy being with family and spending quality time on our vacations to the Central Coast of California.

Ronald Schiedel, Greenhorizons Sod Farms Since its inception in 1975, Greenhorizons Sod Farms has been a family business, growing and harvesting some of Southern Ontario’s finest sod on more than 5,000 acres of land. The family roots run deep and business is currently operating in its 4th generation.

Graduating high school in 1977, Ron quickly stepped into the family business with his parents. He attended his first TPI conference in 1977 and it’s safe to say that sod farming quickly became ingrained in Ron. Along with his brother Steve, he has been at the helm

of expanding their family sod business now with their anchor brand; BigYellowBag®. This iconic garden soil brand has seen over 1.1 million bags of garden soil sold across North America. The family also owns & operates an architecturally designed golf course in the area named Willow Valley, where you will find a top-class bent grass practice facility.

Today, Greenhorizons is a leading sod supplier for infrastructure, golf courses, nature spaces, sports fields and so much more.

An active member of his community, Ron has also been President of both The Nursery Sod Growers Association of Ontario and The Ontario Turfgrass Research Foundation.

Ask many in the industry and when you think passion for turfgrass, you think Ron Schiedel. But it’s not all turf & soil for Ron - he has a love for snowmobiling, curling, and shares a passion of antiques with his wife Sue. To this day, Greenhorizons continues to farm the same land the Schiedel’s ancestors did, and you can regularly find Ron scouting the fields, moving soil, or gladly sharing his wealth of knowledge with the next generation.

Albrecht Knigge Pattensen, Germany Albrecht grew up on an arable farm in Pattensen near Hannover, Germany which has been his families` estate since the 13th century. After national service in the army and a degree in agriculture in 1996, University of Plymouth, UK, Albrecht returned to the farm to work alongside his father in setting up the turf business. It had been started with only 10 acres of turfgrass alongside the main crops wheat, barley and sugar beet in 1992. In the same year the farm joined TPI (then ASPA). Since then Albrecht and his wife Caroline have taken over the business and developed and diversified the farm. From 2001 Albrecht set up 3 more turf farms across Germany together with co-owners, producing and marketing turfgrass under the common “Rasenland” brand. Additionally he is involved in his new company, Turfcom, for the design of specialist turfgrass machinery. Albrecht is current president of the European Turfgrass Producers Association (ETP).

Albrecht and Caroline are blessed with two boys and two girls aged 10, 8, 6 and 3. Albrecht enjoys hunting, ultralight flying and skiing. His home farm will host the ETP turf show and field days in July 2022. his whole family and staff are looking forward to welcoming sod growers and manufacturers from around the world for this event in Germany.

Lindy Murff Crosby, TX Lindy still lives in Crosby, near Houston on the same family farm where he was raised. Lindy’s father, Bill Murff was a high school Agriculture teacher who dreamed of being a cattle rancher. In 1969, Bill started to grow sod on 10 acres in order to support his part time landscaping business.

Lindy, along with his siblings Scott and Renee’ operate the 3800 acre sod farm which serves primarily the Houston Metro. Upon receiving his degree in Agriculture Economics from Texas A & M, he began working with the family business in 1993. The farm is in its fifty first year and he looks forward to the challenges the future holds. Lindy overachieved when he married his wife, Amanda. They have three children. Noah (18), Emma (15) and Cooper (13). Currently his kids are their focus, and their activities are what he enjoys supporting. As a child, he remembers most of the family vacations being where the TPI conferences were hosted. Grass has blessed his family and he looks forward to continuing to promote the value that turfgrass provides to all.

Wade Wilbur, Lawrence, KS Wade is Co-Owner of Sod Shop companies in Lawrence and Wichita Kansas with his uncle Ted Wilbur. Sod Shop has two sod farm locations in Kansas as well as a landscaper supply store that sells hardscape materials.

Wade is a 2002 graduate of Kansas State university and studied Agricultural Education. In his free time, Wade enjoys hunting, boating, riding his motorcycle, attending live music events and traveling.

USS MIDWAY & THRILL RIDE ON THE BAY

Spanning from the culmination of World War II through Operation Desert Storm, the USS Midway had an illustrious career. No other aircraft carrier can match her service record. Berthed at the Navy Pier in downtown San Diego, the USS Midway was named in honor of the pivotal World War II battle.
