Six Construct
Building relationships by exceeding expectations, Six Construct’s most fundamental belief is that its success is directly related to the success of its clients, something that has been at the heart of the company’s philosophy for the past 50 years.
1909
Jacques-Marie and Charles Stulemeijer see potential in prestigious construction projects in Belgium and set up the Societe Belge des Betons (SBB). They make their mark with the rebuilding of Belgium Ports and canals in the aftermath of the Great War.
1922
SBB looks beyond the Belgium borders and sets up a subsidiary in France (Societe Nord –France) and in Spain (SICOP).
1947
SBB recognizes the extraordinary market potential in former Belgium Congo and, together with the Belgium group Empain, invest under the name Auxeltra-Beton.
1966
Large projects in the Middle East demand a new organization. The six companies of SBB form Six Construct. The success in this new region is considerable.
1973
SBB becomes a holding company and the major shareholder in a new construction company named Les Enterprises SBBM. The list of references in the Middle East and Africa grows incredibly fast. Meanwhile the company carries out important infrastructure works in Belgium.
1982
Les Entreprises SBBM, Astobel General Contractors and Six Construct International unite forces and become Les Entreprises SBBM & Six Construct. SBB grows by taking over regional Belgium companies: Entreprises Jacues Delens, Etablissements Jean Wust and Vanhout. New activities are initiated in Luxembourg.
SBBM and Six Construct adopt the shorten name of BESIX. The activities in the Middle East develop very quickly and BESIX East enters the Egyptian and Libyan markets. The company also becomes an important player in France.
13 managers of BESIX and its subsidiaries, together with Orascom Construction Industries execute a management buy-out. SBB becomes BESIX Group, firmly anchored in Belgium.
The Belgium companies Socogetra and Cobelba join BESIX Group. The know-how of Socogetra and Cobelba in road works and industrial activities as well as their strong regional presence in other sectors, such as the production of ready-mix concrete. Asphalt production and production of granules will permit BESIX to complete its range of services and respond better to the evolution of market demand.
BESIX Group concluded an agreement for the acquisition of Franki Foundations Group Belgium (FFGB) and its subsidiaries. FFGB is a renowned leader in the field of soil structure improvement and pilling.
The iconic Burj Khalifa is completed with Six Construct as a major player.
The first tram in the Middle East- the Dubai Tram is completed with Six Construct as a key player in the construction of the project.
50 Years of exceeding expectation
In 1965, Six Construct signed its first project in the UAE and in the region, the Abu Dhabi Corniche. Six Construct had the distinct honour of building the 3.4-km Abu Dhabi Corniche, a significant project for the emirate of Abu Dhabi undertaken directly by the
late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. With continuous renovations and enhancement, the Abu Dhabi Corniche beachfront has been awarded coveted Blue Flag status - the internationally renowned eco-label for beaches and

marinas that guarantees clean and safe bathing water. The beach is enjoyed by approximately 30,000 to 50,000 visitors every month.

Six Construct is the regional company of the Brussels-based BESIX Group which operates in 17 countries on five continents. Established in 1909, BESIX Group has since then evolved into a multi-service enterprise, profiling itself as a key player in high value-added projects, such as marine developments, civil engineering works, large residential and office buildings, and industrial complexes.
When Six Construct first began work in the Gulf, neither the UAE nor Qatar was a sovereign nation state. 50 years later, the construction giant celebrates its golden anniversary with achievements that are themselves milestones in the development of the Gulf region.
Six Construct has been a mainstay in the region’s construction industry. With the strength of over 23,000 employees, Six Construct continues to make iconic landmarks in the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia.
Six Construct can look back with pride on how solidly they have built an inimitable portfolio of projects and clients through the years.
Establishing trust was how Six Construct gained the privilege of working directly with the Sheikhs and Rulers in the early days when they were essentially hands-on from design to execution of the projects.
Over the years, Government entities have put projects out to tender giving equal opportunities to industry players. As a result, competition has been stiff. Thanks to unparalleled expertise and experience, Six Construct has been awarded with prestigious and albeit, challenging projects.

This iconic building is not only known for being the tallest tower in the world but it has also broken two other impressive records, the world’s tallest structure and the tallest free standing structure, Six Construct also received two awards for the Burj Khalifa: the first award being 2010 Best Tall Building Middle East & Africa Region.
The second is 2010 Best Tall Building overall. The Tower combines residential and commercial space and includes the prestigious Armani Boutique hotel, recreation facilities, serviced residences, apartments and an observatory. Its unique mix of functional modernistic surfaces and decorative form
contain abstract references to regional and cultural influences. The Tower base rises upward in a series of steps providing a graceful transition as the structure ascends.
Six Construct implemented the construction of the state-of-the-art tower, and Podium basement. Three elements surround a central
core, where over 45,000m3 of concrete weighing more than 110,000 tonnes were used to construct the concrete and steel foundation, over 22 million man hours were used in the completion of this magnificent structure. A unique landmark that Six Construct is extremely proud of.

While many factors contribute to Six Construct’s legacy of success, there are undoubtedly key values that are sine qua non to its triumphant march towards the golden years.
These are values that have propelled Six Construct to outstanding growth and established it as an unshakeable institution in the construction world.
Nothing builds a better legacy for any organisation than a portfolio of projects that stand the test of time, a feat that can only be achieved by building from beginning to end.
Building consists of more than just sincerity and good intention. It’s about excellence aimed towards outstanding results that endure and exceed expectations. Here, design and technical excellence is key.
Six Construct’s design department creates value in an extraordinary way. A center of excellence in Brussels ensures that ideas are converted into innovative designs. A group of specialist engineers is at hand to bring value engineering into every project.
Through the Dubai Design Department (DDD), Six Construct has ensured best-value designs for projects across the Middle East. Projects such as the Jazan Marine Terminal (Saudi Arabia), Hamriyah Power Station (UAE), Ruwais Waste Water Treatment Plant (UAE) and the Dubai (UAE) are some of the projects that have benefited directly from DDD engineers technical skills and excellence.
In 2013 the company received the Best BIM (Building Information Model) award for the King Abdullah Sports City project.
In 2013, BESIX Group took stock of its entire operation with the advantage of looking back at over a century of success. Corporate introspection crystallised into one core value that has inspired and underpinned the organisation’s growth through the years: RESPECT.
Six Construct understands RESPECT as something owed to every stakeholder from clients, staff and employees, the suppliers, and all the way to end-users and society in general. Not merely a tagline or a logo element, RESPECT is a company conviction, the very breath that sustains the corporate culture of excellence. Six Construct does not compromise respect for anything. RESPECT is the company’s cornerstone for success.
Along the way, the promotion of this cornerstone value has broadened BESIX Group’s perspective on the full scope of RESPECT: respect for the environment, respect for communities, respect for quality, health & safety, respect for client and stakeholders, and respect for staff and employees.
Six Construct honors clients as the focal point of all its goals and endeavours. As such, clients are accorded utmost respect regardless of the scope and breadth of their demands.
Through 50 years of serving a wide variety of clientelle, Six Construct takes pride in having accommodated client demands with short turnaround time. This is how the Gulf region has impressed the world with infrastructures and skylines.

Respecting clients also means interpreting their visions. Six Construct takes it upon itself to capture the client’s vision and work out a logical design that will meet both the vision and the actual on-ground requirements in the present and beyond.
With all the good intentions to serve clients and society, Six Construct acknowledges that the ultimate power to accomplish goals rests upon its human resource. This explains Six Construct’s focus on attracting the best talents in the market and grooming them towards their full potentials.
Six Construct’s respect for employees is best exemplified at the Loyalty Awards ceremony held annually. During last year’s award ceremony, a great number of staff center stage to receive their 40 or so years of service awards. In the 20-30 years of service, there were hundreds that were awarded.
True excellence and genuine service keep long term visions in view.
Six Construct has always pursued increased technical expertise in sustainable construction. Careful studies are conducted on the environmental impact of projects and activities. Engineering teams take into account the construction and long-term energy costs every project entails. Periodic evaluation and review processes are in place to help improve quality performance.
Sustainable and responsible procurement are given strict focus. In unison with BESIX Group, Six Construct implements the Code of Conduct
for Sustainable and Responsible Purchasing and Subcontracting. This helps forge and reinforce partnerships and collaborations with vendors and suppliers.
A respectable balance in the pursuit of profit and concern for the society’s well-being marks Six Construct’s approach to business.
Although a relatively new program, Six Construct’s CSR initiatives have multiplying impact as individual staff become more socially aware. This, in turn, helps transform the group collectively as an organisation with a strong corporate conscience. Six Construct makes it a goal to build bridges between the company and the cities which host it.
The promotion of a safe and healthy work environment is a focus and priority at Six Construct.
First-rate HSE policy is implemented across all projects. Six Construct adheres to BESIX brand’s ‘zero-harm’ commitment in matters of health, safety and environment. This means aiming at 0% accident rate and no harm to society and no damage to the environment. In 2009, Six Construct together with BESIX Group’s entities worldwide launched an initiative called ‘Safety Time Out’ sessions. During its annual observance, every staff and employee takes a 2-hour safety break. In mid2013, ‘Life Saving Rules’ campaign was also launched, a highly welcomed initiative by everyone at BESIX Group.
Six Construct is ISO 9001:2000, OHSAS 18001:2007, and ISO 14001:2004 certified. Recently, it’s been awarded both ISM and IMCA certifications.

Yas Island Development – Ferrari Experience
Yas Island is set to become one of the top resort locations in the world, renowned for the Formula 1 Circuit and the Ferrari Experience that provides fun and thrill for all ages.
To house the gigantic

attractions, a huge structure needed to be built that composed of an indoor air-conditioned central area. This structure in the shape of a shield is legendary due to the structural shape and the dazzling red color of Ferrari.
The curvature of the roof was technically made possible due to ‘nodes’ being developed, each one specifically assembled on site. Each single node was assembled on site and placed individually by the crews
working in adapted cherry pickers.
27 cranes, 42 cherry pickers, 20 mobile cranes not counting the fork lifts and telehandlers were used to ensure the project met all deadlines.
Set to become a world class touristic destination, the Yas Island features unique experience such as the Ferrari experience. The design of the theme park reflects the Ferrari sinuous form, inspired by the classic

double wave side profile of a Ferrari car. The shield-like structure is legendary due to its shape and dazzling red colour of the Ferrari trademark.
The park showcases a combination of indoor and
outdoor rides, museums, cinemas and restaurants allowing visitors to experience the full Ferrari experience.

Reaching beyond the Golden years
Six Construct can only see the bright promise of a sustained role and even bigger participation in the Gulf’s development as the region continues to assert its position as the centre of Middle East prosperity.
Taking into account the sheer volume of mega projects that are either underway or in the pipeline, the Gulf region is clearly in the forefront of unparalleled development signifying bigger economies, job opportunities and endless possibilities.
Playing host to global events such as the Expo 2020 and FIFA World Cup 2022 and with determined plans for economic diversification, the Middle East, primarily, the Gulf region, is poised for over US$1 trillion worth of development across 117 major programmes that are planned for completion by 2030. These programmes include infrastructure developments, transport and communication systems, retail and leisure, education centres, health and sports complexes.
In view of what’s ahead, it is clear that Six Construct’s 50th anniversary is a celebration of its glorious past and a beamingly bright future.
Since the 1900s
Making its mark with the rebuilding of Belgian ports and canals in the aftermath of the First World War, SBB quickly obtained a reputation for expertise in concrete works for industrial and infrastructure projects. In the 1920s, for the first time the company went overseas to carry out marine works on a large scale: 3 km of breakwaters were built at the port of Valencia on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Following this, SBB became a prominent contractor for
all types of marine works such as harbour, canal and river projects, and, after the Second World War, it started working in the Congo and has continued to work in Africa ever since.
During the 1950s the Group began to diversify into the construction market.
43 Years in the Gulf....
It was in 1966 that six companies belonging to the Group decided to enter the Gulf region construction market; Six Construct was born. The work was carefully prepared in the Brussels headquarters and all plant and equipment was shipped out from Belgium. Two contracts were tackled simultaneously: the Abu Dhabi ‘Corniche’ and a quay wall for Doha harbour. The Group throughout Six Construct has been active in the region without a break ever since.
Further growth and success, including various works in the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, and in Moscow, Russia, where it completed a 516 room hotel in just 20 months, SBB moved into the 21st century as the preferred contractor for a growing army of discerning clients throughout the world. At the end of 2004 a new era dawned when SBB became the BESIX Group.
It was quickly selected by Emaar to build the world’s tallest tower in a joint venture in Dubai, over the previous two decades, the Group had built up a solid reputation as a ‘skyscraper’ specialist, with successfully completed projects in such diverse locations as Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Cairo, Warsaw, Rotterdam and Paris. No longer can the Group define itself only in terms of its construction contracting activity. For the last five years, it has opened up new horizons for expansion in a constantly changing world.

50 Years of exceeding expectation

The Group now profiles itself as a multidisciplinary group. It has expanded its competences (environment, roads, foundations) and has developed its experience in new types of contracts (PPP, BOOT, DBFM). It wants to deliver custom-made solutions to its clients. It has sought to detect new niches, the fruits of which it hopes to harvest in the coming years. The Group also wants to keep alive its ‘pioneer’ spirit.
With offices in Sharjah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Oman, Bahrain and Qatar, Six Construct has expanded into one of the region’s leading building contractors and has enjoyed considerable success throughout the Middle East.
A multi-services operation, pursuing geographical diversification and specialisation in new business areas, Six Construct has particular expertise in the use of concrete in complex marine projects (quay walls, jetties, etc), major building works (airports, hotels, office buildings hospitals etc), and large scale infrastructure projects (motorways, railways, tunnels, bridges and industrial plants etc).
Six Construct specialises in several specialist areas that include towers and large sophisticated residential and commercial complexes; pleasure ports; marine works, including quay walls, breakwaters and jetties; civil construction for industrial infrastructures such as power plants; cement factories and petrochemical installations; environmental and energy-related industries; sports and
leisure complexes, such as large-scale multifunctional sports centres and stadiums, and a huge range of infrastructure projects that include bridges, tunnels and railway tracks among others. Its unrivalled knowledge of these many aspects of the construction industry can be clearly seen in the various projects that Six Construct has been involved in over the years.
Superior performance across all sectors of the business is the driving force to ensuring that Six Construct remains a market leader now and in the future. As a result, Six Construct continues to build its reputation for successfully completing a broad portfolio of niche and groundbreaking projects.
At the same time, the company recognizes that it is only through the continuing delivery of outstanding performance, through a policy of co-operating, communication and competence applied consistently and continually throughout its operations, which will continue its well deserved growth. The company’s approach is based on a broad experience, incorporating advanced technologies and know-how, project management skills, financial expertise and advanced service capabilities.
Combined with the collective strength of the Group, has continued to generate exceptional value for its clients. The company’s mission is to make its clients’ wishes a reality and, thanks to the size and diversity of the building projects, Six Construct has a wide range of in-house specialists who can offer the best - when only the best will do.

Co-ordination, communication and advanced planning are key factors, with clients stemming, with Six Construct’s success; with clients stemming directly from professional project managers, who make each project their own. Six Construct thrives and actively seeks projects that are different and demanding and will utilise the skills of the talented people they employ, whose construction ideas are changing the face of the world. Nothing is too deep, too high or too wide for this multi-disciplined construction company.
It is no surprise, that the company wins many of the Gulf’s most prestigious contracts. For instance, Six Construct won more than $250 million worth of construction contracts for the Al Gurm Resort in Abu Dhabi. The private villas are in a variety of styles according to their natural habitat and setting, with a select number having their own private beach. Six Construct also won the $17 million piling and foundation contract on the project. Six Construct is also an integral part of the booming construction sector that now exists in Qatar. Committed to creating a sustainable path to growth, the company initially entered the Qatar market with a view to developing its marine activities, including the construction of quay walls, dry docks and water intake facilities, but has now diversified into a whole range of landmark projects.
The BESIX Group, and of course in turn Six Construct, has a system for responding to the highly important environmental demands of the
various countries where they are active. At the start-up phase of a worksite, an environmental assurance plan identifies and assesses the environmental aspects and impacts of the various activities that will be undertaken. The objectives of these plans will be to identify, assess and mitigate any potential damage to existing marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The plans will also identify appropriate preventative measures to ensure that the ecosystems are improved through the application of acquired and researched technologies. Implementation of strict guidelines and policies are key directives in all corporate operations.
There is no doubt that the construction industry is changing the face of the Gulf, threatening to deliver a potential catastrophe on the landscape. Six Construct, however, is staying ahead of its competitors and working with the environment to ensure quality projects that work hand-in-hand with nature. Focused on long term success Six Construct’s success tomorrow depends upon its clients’ successes today.
Indeed, on many occasions clients return and the process begins again on a new project. Six Construct’s clients come back to it for a reason: at Six Construct its focus is on long term success. The company does everything in its power to ensure that once a client has worked with Six Construct, they never feel a need to look elsewhere. Founded in 1975 as a 100% owned subsidiary of Dutch civil engineering company Volker Stevin, all rights to the business were purchased in May 1996 by His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, which began an era of consolidation, expansion and strengthening. In 2004, as a 99% government-owned company, it became Stevin Rock LLC, and a new board was formed.
Delivering the highest quality material to some of the leading developers and construction companies inside and outside the Gulf region, Stevin Rock produces:
• High-grade limestone and gabbro rock, concrete and asphalt aggregates for the construction industry, including Armour Rock (1.0+ tonne material), Small Armour (1001,000kg) and core material (<1.0 tonne material)
• Crushed aggregates
• Lime kiln feedstock
• Cement kiln feedstock
Khor Khuwair is the largest of Stevin Rock’s quarries and, with an output capacity of 27 million tonnes per annum and reserves of over four billion tonnes,
is one of the largest limestone quarries in the world. Moreover, the consistent geology of the quarry, which features regular and widely spaced bedding planes, produces limestone rated as the highest quality by chemical composition and geological testing. This makes it ideal for concrete, cement, lime and steel plant applications that demand raw material of the very finest quality and consistency. Furthermore, thanks to the state-ofthe-art extraction, processing and transportation equipment, Stevin Rock can extract and process up to 5000 tonnes of material per hour, whilst still maintaining the standards that its clients have come to expect.
470,000 tonnes of buffer storage ensures continuous, uninterrupted flow of material for transport or loading by barge, ship cranes or ship loader at the quarry’s seven berth all-weather harbour. Strict environmental controls at every stage of the process ensure that disruption to the natural habitat and wildlife is minimised.
Al Ghail quarry, meanwhile, produces a unique white limestone, which is mined primarily for the Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Gulf and Asia region markets at a
rate of 10 million tonnes per year. The quarry operates to the highest international standards, utilising advanced techniques and efficient plant and equipment to ensure the highest quality with the lowest possible cost base. Superior-quality dolomite is also produced at Al Ghail, with much of this output being supplied to India’s leading steel companies.
Kadra is Stevin Rock’s only ‘hard rock’ quarry, with an output capacity of seven million tonnes per year. Ideal for most challenging applications thanks to the fact that the rock is highly abrasive, the material produced by Kadra’s four crushing lines is exported via Stevin Rock Harbour and Saqr Port, with over 30% of output going to Qatar and Kuwait for use in high specification construction, highway and marine projects.
Wherever the quarry and whatever the product though, Steven Rock guarantees the utmost in quality, with the company’s ISO 9001 certification, in tandem with many other internationally recognised standards, also providing clients with complete peace of mind.

On November 12, 2000, voting for the venue to host the 2006 Asian Games took place in Busan, South Korea. 41 members of the Olympic Council of Asia selected Doha as their choice. This result projected a big growth in the construction market of Qatar. With a goal to supply technical manpower support to the biggest names in the construction industry, Al-Salam Technical Services and Electricals was launched in 2005 at a time when the demand for a qualified workforce was at its peak. STS started its journey to become a brand name in the manpower industry with just 20 civil workers and Six Construct, Doha,
as its first client. Within a year, STS reached its first goal of a 500 strong workforce. Owing to the company’s professionalism and dedication towards clients’ projects, STS soon was able to establish a reputation that would make it a reliable source of qualified manpower for years to come. However, growth was hampered by the impact of the financial crisis, which reduced the demand for residential and commercial construction projects due to a lack of confidence among private investors. The management of STS knew it had to sustain its numbers through this financial crisis if it was to grow in the near future. At a time
when other manpower companies were reducing their workforce in order to control losses, STS supplied its manpower at a low cost, which made it a preferred choice to the few construction companies that still had projects.
The outlook for construction changed as a result of Qatar hosting the FIFA 2022 World Cup, resulting in the government’s focus on infrastructure and residential construction.
Construction growth was further strengthened by the Qatar National Vision 2030, through which the country looks to become a developed nation by diversifying its economy, achieving sustainable development and providing a high standard of living for its population.
The labour workforce market saw a steep rise during the second quarter of 2012 owing to the various construction projects introduced, and STS strengthened its market position with by increasing the number to 1500 civil workers. By early 2013, STS had established a commercial cleaning company, Mutual Cleaning and Services, to cater to the hospitality and facility management sector. With STS already

At 343 meters in height, the ADNOC HQ Tower is currently the tallest building in Abu Dhabi situated on the Corniche. Commencing with the pile foundations and the massive raft foundation, Unibeton’s specialized concretes were used for the entire project. The concreting was completed in July 2014 and at this time, the building is substantially complete. The emphasis was on economical structural design and considerable thought was placed on achieving a very high Modules of Elasticity (E) of 51,000 MPa for C95 mixes and 48,000 MPa for the C80 mixes used in the core walls. Those are considerably higher values than those quoted in BS 8110 the code of practice for structural concrete. The C80/20 and C80/10 mixes placed in the core walls posed and interesting challenge. SelfCompacting Concrete was used with OP
Cement, fly ash to assist with pumping by helping to lubricate the pumping pipeline. The concrete also included PC admixtures and had a low w/c ratio to enhance the durability of the structure. The very high quality of the concrete finish to the side walls was both a testimony to the advanced concrete technology employed in the design but also the very high standard of workmanship used in casting the walls by the contractor, Six Construct. Many observers commented that it was some of the highest quality of insitu concrete produced in the world with a uniform colour and free of formwork leakages and blemishes normally associated with this type of work.
C95/20 and C95/10 concrete mixes were also used in the columns and walls using mixes composed of OPC cement and micro silica together with specially
formulated PC admixtures to enable the concrete to be pumped from ground level to heights around 330m. The concrete had a very low water / cement ratio of 0.27 and was expected to achieve the required specified strengths at 28 days after placing in the formwork. The client, ADNOC and an equally high demanding company such as Six Construct made this project challenging with over 150,000 m³ of both C95 and C80 concretes resulting in an outstanding addition to the Abu Dhabi skyline.

Stevin Rock has been the leading quarry operator in the Middle East for more than 35 years. During this time we have forged a reputation for reliably and consistently delivering the highest quality material to some of the leading developers and construction companies inside and outside the region.
We have the capacity to produce and sell more than 45 million tonnes per year of high-grade limestone, gabbro rock, concrete and asphalt aggregates for the construction and manufacturing markets in the UAE, Gulf region and Asia. The three quarries we own and operate in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah – Khor Khuwair, Al Ghail and Kadra – contain 7 billion tonnes of surveyed reserves. For over 35 years we have consistently delivered high quality and durable materials to our customers.
The consistent geology of Khor Khuwair features regular and widely spaced bedding planes, that produce limestone rated at the highest quality, through chemical composition and geology testing. This makes it ideal for concrete, cement, lime and steel plant applications, which demand raw material of the highest quality and consistency.
Use of the most advanced extraction, processing and transportation equipment enables us to extract and process up to 5,000 tonnes of material per hour, whilst maintaining the standards our customers expect.
470,000 tonnes of buffer storage ensures continuous flow of material for transportation. It is loaded by barge, ship cranes or ship loader, at the quarry’s seven berth al-weather harbour.
Strict environmental controls at every stage of the process ensure that disruption to the natural habitat and wildlife is minimised.

Stevin Rock has become one of the largest mining companies in the world, employing over 1,900 people. Between 2005–2010 we jointly produced almost 250 million tonnes of material from our three Ras Al Khaimah mines.
The management team of Stevin Rock is both highly qualified and highly experienced. Its senior members have each spent a minimum of 20 years in relevant fields, and all take an active role in the strategic decisions that drive us forward.
We produce:
• High-grade limestone and gabbro rock, concrete and asphalt aggregates for the construction industry, including:
• Armour Rock (1.0+ tonne material)
