IN TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY, RESILIENCE DEFINES A NATION. THE UAE CONTINUES TO DEMONSTRATE REMARKABLE STRENGTH AND UNITY IN THE FACE OF ONGOING REGIONAL TENSIONS, WITH UNWAVERING VIGILANCE FROM THE UAE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE ENSURING THE SAFETY AND SECURITY OF CITIZENS AND RESIDENTS ALIKE. IT IS A MOMENT THAT UNDERSCORES NOT ONLY PREPAREDNESS, BUT ALSO THE COLLECTIVE CONFIDENCE THAT THE COUNTRY WILL EMERGE STRONGER, GUIDED BY DECISIVE LEADERSHIP AND A SHARED NATIONAL PURPOSE.

Against this backdrop, this issue of Emirates Projects highlights the very forces driving that resilience through innovation, sustainability, and long-term vision. Our cover story examines how Grandweld Shipyards is setting a new benchmark for maritime sustainability. Its 2025 report reveals significant reductions in CO₂ emissions, demonstrating how industrial players in the UAE are aligning growth with environmental responsibility.

Transformation is also at the heart of Ras Al Khaimah’s global positioning, as the emirate advances a bold, future-focused strategy that continues to attract international investment and redefine its economic landscape. Meanwhile, urban innovation takes center stage with Dubai Roads and Transport Authority’s Dubai Walk initiative, an ambitious reimagining of pedestrian infrastructure designed to enhance livability and connectivity across the city.

Sustainability remains a unifying theme throughout this edition. Holcim’s latest initiative, spotlighting women in sustainable construction, reinforces the importance of inclusivity in shaping the industry’s future. Etihad Rail moves closer to realizing passenger rail services that will connect the Emirates, reduce travel times, and support greener mobility solutions nationwide.

Our opinion piece by Simon Lewis offers a timely perspective on navigating complexity, reminding us that transformation, like steering an oil tanker requires steady, deliberate action rather than abrupt change.

Finally, we explore the creative dimension of development through Artychoke, whose narrative-led approach to art is redefining spatial identity and embedding culture at the core of design.

Together, these stories reflect a nation that continues to move forward with purpose! Resilient, innovative, and unwavering in its ambition.

Titled Evolving Community Neighborhoods, the session brought together government leaders, developers, and industry stakeholders to examine how planning decisions, accessibility, and shared spaces are influencing wellbeing, social cohesion, and long-term livability. The discussion reflects Ras Al Khaimah’s continued growth and diversification, with an increasing focus on people-centered development.

Delivered in collaboration with RAK Business Group and supported by RAKBANK as Community Engagement Partner, the event underscored the growing alignment between public and private sectors. RAS AL KHAIMAH’S VISIONARY GLOBAL TRANSFORMATION

STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT AND LEADERSHIP PROPEL THE EMIRATE INTO A PREMIER INVESTMENT AND TOURISM POWERHOUSE.

Ras Al Khaimah is undergoing a remarkable metamorphosis emerging from a traditionally quieter emirate into one of the UAE’s most dynamic hubs for investment, tourism, and lifestyle living. Anchored by robust government strategy and a clear vision for 2030, the emirate’s journey is marked by strategic infrastructure, global partnerships, and forward-thinking development platforms that position it as a destination of choice for investors, residents, and travellers from around the world.

At the core of this evolution is the Ras Al Khaimah Investment and Development Office (IDO), the government’s investment arm that drives economic diversification and value creation across sectors. Established in 2004, the IDO stewards a wide portfolio spanning manufacturing, tourism, real estate, healthcare, and more, balancing responsible governance with sustainable economic returns

for the emirate’s long-term prosperity.

“Our goal is to drive sustainable growth and prosperity for the emirate through strategic investments supporting the national agenda,” said Sheikha Amneh Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Investment and Development Office for the Government of Ras Al Khaimah. “We are committed to creating opportunities that enrich lives, strengthen communities, and unlock Ras Al Khaimah’s potential on the global stage.”

In parallel, the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) is leading a bold tourism expansion strategy that positions the emirate as a year-round global destination. With the goal of attracting millions of annual visitors by 2030, RAKTDA promotes the emirate’s diverse natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and growing array of worldclass events and attractions. Its efforts are aligning with sustainable principles to ensure

tourism supports economic growth while protecting the emirate’s unique environment.

A defining pillar of Ras Al Khaimah’s transformation is visionary development from large-scale masterplans to mixed-use urban hubs. Projects like Al Marjan Island and the emerging RAK Central district are reshaping the emirate’s urban and investment landscape. These developments integrate premium residences, commercial space, hospitality, and leisure into dynamic ecosystems that appeal to international investors, working professionals, and families alike. Marjan’s recent strategic merger with RAK Hospitality under a unified brand signals a consolidated

DIVERSIFIED ECONOMIC GROWTH ANCHORED IN SUSTAINABLE INVESTMENT

approach to growth that enhances scale, quality, and global competitiveness.

Strategic global partnerships continue to accelerate RAK’s trajectory. Major international developers and hotel brands are entering the market, responding to rising demand for luxury living and tourism experiences. At

the same time, new infrastructure including expanded aviation facilities underpins ease of access and connectivity that supports both business and leisure travel.

Through aligned governance between investment and tourism authorities, Ras Al Khaimah is crafting an ecosystem where

investors benefit from clarity, stability, and opportunity, and visitors discover a destination that blends culture, adventure, relaxation, and innovation. The emirate’s transformation is a testament to the strength of strategic vision and collaborative execution charting a course toward a vibrant, sustainable, and globally significant future.

DUBAI WALK ELEVATES PEDESTRIAN URBAN EXPERIENCE

RTA LAUNCHES AL RAS PHASE TO RESHAPE MOBILITY, CONNECTIVITY, AND CULTURAL IDENTITY.

n line with the directives of Dubai’s leadership to transform the emirate into a pedestrian-friendly city year-round, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded the contract for Phase I of the Dubai Walk Master Plan in Al Ras, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of urban mobility and public realm design.

The first phase includes the development of the Historic Al Ras Walkway, featuring 12 kilometers of pedestrian pathways and 5

6,000 KM OF WALKWAYS PLANNED BY 2040

kilometers of cycling tracks. The project also encompasses the rehabilitation of 10 artistic spaces, delivered in collaboration with Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and with the participation of Emirati and local artists.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative:

“The Pedestrian Master Plan plays a key role in strengthening Dubai’s global competitiveness in walkway infrastructure and soft mobility. It advances the objectives of the Dubai Urban Plan 2040, particularly the 20-minute city,

enabling residents to access more than 80% of essential services within a 20-minute journey.”

The initiative supports Dubai’s Quality of Life Strategy 2033 by enhancing pedestrian safety, improving connectivity between districts, and integrating cultural and aesthetic elements into urban infrastructure. The project reinforces the identity of key areas while contributing to the overall beautification of public spaces.

ENHANCING CONNECTIVITY AND URBAN EXPERIENCE

The broader Dubai Walk Master Plan outlines the development of a comprehensive and interconnected pedestrian network

spanning 160 areas across the emirate. By 2040, more than 6,000 kilometers of walkways will be delivered or enhanced, alongside the construction of 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses to strengthen inter-district connectivity.

The plan aims to increase the share of walking and soft mobility trips from 16% in 2025 to 25% by 2040, supporting a shift toward more sustainable and active transportation modes.

REVITALIZING HISTORIC AL RAS

The Historic Al Ras Walkway will connect key heritage landmarks, including Al Ahmadiya School, Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House, Al Ras

Public Library, Al Fahidi Fort, and Al Shindagha Historic District. The walkway will also integrate seamlessly with 11 public transport nodes, including metro, bus, and marine stations, enhancing first- and last-mile connectivity.

Design interventions will prioritize preserving the historic character of the area while introducing modern urban enhancements. These include widened pavements, shaded walkways, seating areas, expanded green spaces, and a cohesive wayfinding system aligned with the district’s heritage context.

The project will also feature curated artistic elements, including murals and sculptural installations, complemented by advanced architectural lighting to highlight the area’s cultural identity. Ongoing artistic programming and seasonal events will further activate the space and enrich the visitor experience.

FUTURE-FOCUSED URBAN DESIGN

Dubai Walk introduces innovative urban design features aimed at enhancing comfort and usability, including shading systems,

misting technologies to mitigate heat, and interactive walkways equipped with digital screens, signage, and recreational elements.

The development also ensures barrier-free access, improved pedestrian safety standards, and the integration of walkways into smart navigation systems and applications. Design elements such as landscaping, lighting, and materials will vary across districts, creating a distinct sense of place and visual identity.

PROJECT TIMELINE

Phase 1 of the Dubai Walk Master Plan is scheduled for implementation between 2025 and 2027, with subsequent phases to be delivered progressively through to 2040.

The company was founded within a large private real estate portfolio spanning premium Dubai communities including Palm Jumeirah, Blue Waters, Jumeirah Village Circle, and Abu Dhabi; giving it an operational foundation that most independent maintenance providers simply cannot match.

INSTITUTIONAL STANDARDS, NOW AVAILABLE TO ALL

Unlike traditional reactive maintenance companies, European Technical was built from day one to serve a demanding private landlord operating at scale. Every process from work order tracking and scheduled inspections to contractor accountability and owner reporting - was engineered to meet the expectations of a sophisticated property investor managing dozens of premium units simultaneously. That operational backbone is now being offered to external clients for the first time.

“When you spend years maintaining properties for a large private landlord with extremely high standards, it changes how you think about this industry,” said Mouhammad Assaad, Chief Operating Officer of European Technical. “Reactive is not good enough. Every unit needs to be treated as if the owner is watching because in our experience, they are. We are bringing that same discipline and accountability to every new client we work with.”

FULL-SPECTRUM MAINTENANCE AND SMART HOME INTEGRATION

European Technical delivers end-to-end property

maintenance across all technical disciplines, including HVAC servicing and installation, electrical works, plumbing, general repairs, and preventative maintenance programs tailored to individual properties and portfolios.

With the introduction of the X-Air 900-20, Atlas Copco strengthens its DrillAir portfolio with a flexible, application driven portable air compressor designed for the realities of mining and construction operations worldwide.

Atlas Copco has expanded its DrillAir portfolio of portable air compressors with the launch of the X-Air 900-20, a versatile and fuel-efficient solution designed for demanding drilling applications in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Central and South America, the Middle East, and South East Asia.

Engineered for flexibility, reliability, and ease of operation, the X-Air 900-20 supports a wide range of applications across mining and construction, helping customers operate efficiently across diverse job sites and working conditions.

Built on Atlas Copco’s proven expertise in portable air solutions for tough applications, the X-Air 900-20 combines advanced compressor control, a compact footprint, and a robust design to deliver dependable compressed air where it matters most.

ONE COMPRESSOR, MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS

At the core of the X-Air 900-20 is PACE technology, which allows operators to set working pressure anywhere between 14 and 20 bar. This flexibility enables a single compressor to support different drilling applications, helping customers maximize fleet utilization and reduce the need for multiple machines on site.

In mining, the X-Air 900-20 is particularly well suited for blast hole drilling and dimension stone quarry drilling, where consistent air delivery and adaptability are essential for productivity.

In construction, the compressor supports applications such as slope anchoring, down-the-hole (DTH) solar piling, and ground engineering drilling. By matching pressure to application needs, operators can optimize performance while avoiding unnecessary fuel consumption and component wear.

FUEL-EFFICIENT OPERATION WITH SMART CONTROL

Designed to reduce operating costs, the X-Air 900-20 features ECO mode, delivering measurable fuel savings of up to 50% during unload conditions. By switching from idle to no-load operation, the compressor minimizes unnecessary fuel use, helping lower total cost of ownership while supporting longer component life and efficient, easy operation. Fuel efficiency is further supported by FuelXpert technology, which continuously manages fuel consumption throughout operation. Together, these

technologies help customers control fuel costs while maintaining reliable air delivery on site.

The compressor is equipped with the Xc2004 smart air controller, providing operators with clear machine information, intuitive control, and easy monitoring. Maintenance is simplified through large service doors, a new vessel design, and long service intervals, helping reduce downtime and service effort. Built-in monitoring features support timely maintenance and help protect key components.

A range of optional packages, including high-ambient, high-altitude, and cold-climate configurations, allows the X-Air 900-20 to be adapted to local operating conditions and customer requirements.

“The X-Air 900-20 is designed for customers who need a reliable, adaptable compressor

that can support different drilling applications without added complexity,” says Srijayan Iyer, Product Marketing Manager for Large Air. “By combining flexible pressure, smart control, and a robust, easy-to-maintain design, we’re helping customers improve utilization and control operating costs across demanding job sites.”

THE KEYS TO SUCCESSFUL NUCLEAR DECOMMISSIONING

REMOTE MONITORING FOR NUCLEAR DECOMMISSIONING OVERCOMES INDUSTRY CHALLENGES.

Remote monitoring specialist Omniflex has published its latest sector overview exploring the challenges of maintaining critical alarm visability and radiation monitoring during nuclear decommissioning. The free downloadable guide outlines the risks that arise as sites are de-manned, and legacy infrastructure must continue to serve safety-critical functions.

Recent ambitions for new nuclear projects have resulted in decades-long decommissioning programmes across former UK nuclear sites. Yet

continuous safety monitoring remains essential, even as asset managers face shrinking workforces, ageing infrastructure and rising cost pressures.

Sharing the keys to success, Omniflex draws on its experience in safety critical systems and control and instrumentation (C&I) overlay projects, helping some of the sector’s biggest decommissioning projects.

“Decommissioning is a time-intensive process, and asset managers cannot simply switch off the reactor, lock the door and walk away,” explained Gary

Bradshaw, director of Omniflex. “Typically, all spent fuel, much of which is radioactive, must be removed, stored in deep cooling pools and transferred into storage for decades to come. Meanwhile, equipment is dismantled and decontaminated using remote-controlled segmentation. Safety critical monitoring must continue throughout, despite buildings being vacated and onus for managing these being placed increasingly on non-specialist security staff,” Gary continued.

The issue is, overhauling an entire legacy system

on a plant undergoing de-manning is a significant financial undertaking and asset managers face a difficult balance act. They must continue to monitor radiation levels, critical alarms and key plant data for safety, while reducing costs and manual oversight.

The guide also explores a recent project where Omniflex successfully delivered a remote monitoring and centralized alarm platform that sat above existing plant infrastructure. The solution reused existing cabling via the company’s Conet network technology, reduced civil works and

offered security personnel means of managing safety-critical systems remotely. Radiation hazards, surveillance and alarm visibility were ensured, meaning sites were compliant with regulation and streamlined in its de-staffing.

The latest sector overview from Omniflex explores these unique pressures against a backdrop of increased regulatory scrutiny. With obsolete cabling and control systems and the need for 24/7 visibility, the overview explains how distributed remote monitoring, intelligent alarm

management and scalable system architecture can ensure continuity cost-effectively.

ARTYCHOKE CURATING STORIES THROUGH ARTFUL SPACES

NARRATIVE-LED CONSULTANCY RESHAPING HOSPITALITY AND DESIGN

ACROSS GLOBAL MARKETS.

In an era where design is expected to evoke emotion as much as function, Artychoke has positioned itself at the forefront of narrative-led art consultancy. Founded in 2018, the Dubai-based studio has rapidly grown into a multidisciplinary force, curating and delivering bespoke art programs that elevate hospitality, commercial, and branded residential environments.

At its core, Artychoke operates on a simple but powerful belief: art is not decoration, it is identity. Every collection is conceived as part of a larger story, reflecting culture, heritage, and the unique character of a space. This philosophy underpins the company’s work across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe, where it collaborates with leading interior designers, developers, and operators to create immersive, meaningful environments.

What began as a consultancy focused on artistic direction and curation has evolved into a full turnkey provider. Today, Artychoke manages the entire lifecycle of an art program from concept development and narrative creation to artist sourcing, procurement, production oversight, and installation. This

Art as identity, not decoration

end-to-end capability allows the studio to seamlessly integrate art into complex developments, ensuring consistency, quality, and impact at every stage.

LEADERSHIP DRIVING VISION AND EXECUTION

Artychoke’s success is anchored in a leadership team that balances creative vision with operational precision.

JULIE SLEVA, MANAGING DIRECTOR

A Dubai-based design leader with over a decade of experience across Saudi Arabia, Julie Sleva brings a rare combination of creative insight and strategic execution. Having worked extensively in Jeddah and Riyadh on both large-scale developments and high-end private projects, she has developed a deep understanding of regional design narratives and client expectations. At Artychoke, she leads the company’s growth and operations, guiding multidisciplinary teams while ensuring that each project aligns with both artistic ambition and commercial objectives. Her ability to merge design thinking with structured delivery has positioned Artychoke as a trusted partner across the region’s rapidly evolving built environment.

ARGHAVAN HATAMABADI, DESIGN MANAGER

With a background in interior design and more than seven years in art consultancy,

Arghavan plays a pivotal role in shaping Artychoke’s creative direction. Holding an MBA focused on leadership and executive development, she brings both strategic depth and design expertise to her role. She leads the development of narrative-driven art concepts, overseeing everything from initial research and zoning strategies to artist collaboration and final execution. Having delivered projects across multiple continents, Arghavan is recognized for bridging creativity with practicality, ensuring that each curated piece contributes meaningfully to the spatial experience while remaining aligned with project constraints and timelines.

Supporting the leadership team is Faizan Mazhar, Senior Project Manager, who oversees procurement and delivery. His role ensures that Artychoke’s ambitious concepts are executed seamlessly, maintaining quality control, managing supplier

JULIE SLEVAS

coordination, and delivering projects from concept to completion with precision.

A STRUCTURED APPROACH TO STORYTELLING

Artychoke’s methodology is rooted in research, narrative, and collaboration. Each project begins with a deep exploration of context, its geography, culture, and identity, forming the foundation for a cohesive artistic vision. From there, the team develops a zoning strategy, identifying key touchpoints where art can have the greatest impact.

This process evolves into a curated narrative and moodboard that guides artist engagement. By working closely with both emerging and established creatives, Artychoke ensures that each piece is not only visually compelling but also intrinsically connected to the broader story of the space.

The result is a seamless dialogue between art and interior design—where installations act as focal points, navigational cues, and emotional anchors. As Hatamabadi notes, art becomes “the soul of a space,” shaping how users experience and remember it.

COMPREHENSIVE SERVICES, SEAMLESS DELIVERY

Artychoke’s integrated service offering is

designed to support complex, large-scale developments: Art & Accessory Consultancy provides tailored curation aligned with project vision, materiality, and spatial dynamics; Art Procurement handles end-toend management of sourcing, budgeting, and supplier coordination; and Installation & Supervision ensures precise on-site

execution, meeting the highest standards.

EMPOWERING ARTISTS, ENRICHING COMMUNITIES

A defining aspect of Artychoke’s work is its commitment to supporting artists from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds. Collaborating with creatives across Africa, Thailand, and beyond, the studio actively champions voices that might otherwise go unseen.

From self-taught painters in Tanzania to sculptors exploring social narratives in Kenya, these collaborations bring authenticity and depth to each project. More importantly, they reinforce Artychoke’s belief that art should serve as a bridge connecting cultures, communities, and stories.

Sustainability is also embedded within this approach. By working with regional suppliers, commissioning original works, and prioritizing durable materials, Artychoke reduces reliance on mass-produced décor while promoting longevity and environmental responsibility.

FAIZAN MAZHAR, SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER
ARGHAVAN HATAMABADI

Each piece is curated not only for its aesthetic value but also for its lasting impact.

RESPONDING TO A CHANGING MARKET

The demand for narrative-driven art consultancy is accelerating, particularly across the Middle East. As hospitality and mixed-use developments continue to expand, developers and operators are seeking differentiated experiences that resonate with increasingly discerning audiences.

Clients today prioritize authenticity over ornamentation. They are looking for sitespecific works that reflect local culture, integrate regional artists, and create emotional connections. There is a growing expectation for seamless execution where a single consultancy can deliver concept, curation, and installation under one roof.

Artychoke’s portfolio spanning hotels, offices, retail spaces, leisure destinations, and public buildings demonstrates its ability to meet these evolving demands. By combining storytelling with technical expertise, the studio delivers art programs that are both meaningful and commercially viable.

INNOVATION IN PRACTICE: THE UNEXPECTED HOTEL

One of Artychoke’s most compelling recent

concepts can be seen in its contribution to The Unexpected Hotel on Al Marjan Island. Drawing inspiration from cymatics, the visual expression of sound vibrations, the project transforms invisible rhythms into a fully immersive spatial experience.

Through a series of interconnected themes, including Dynamic Duality of Styles, Phenomena in Nature, and Pulsating Echoes, the art program creates a layered sensory journey. Sculptural forms, kinetic installations, and experimental materials bring movement and energy into the space, blurring the boundaries between art, design, and emotion.

This approach reflects Artychoke’s broader ambition: to redefine art in hospitality not as an accessory, but as a central driver of identity and experience.

GROWTH AND FUTURE DIRECTION

As Artychoke enters its next phase of growth, the company is expanding both geographically and across new sectors. While the GCC particularly Saudi Arabia remains a key focus, opportunities are also emerging across MENA and Africa.

The studio is increasingly exploring new verticals, including healthcare, education, and mixed-use developments, where curated

AN OIL TANKER CANNOT TURN LIKE A SPEEDBOAT

WHY UAE INDUSTRY NEEDS STEADY HANDS, NOT SUDDEN SWERVES.

In my latter years in the military in the 1980s, part of my ongoing education was studying the world’s economic hot spots and responding to a hard question: where might conflict break out, and what force would be needed to protect trade, economic stability, and allies? One of those places was the Strait of Hormuz. The lessons from the Aden Emergency in the 1960s and the Oman conflict that ran into the mid-1970s were plain enough: this is a hard region to control by force, and even harder to control cheaply. My own high-level view, then and now, is simple: better that politicians solve Hormuz through serious dialogue than have the military try to police it at great cost.

Using the same technique of scenario planning I did in the military, now a similar lens can be applied as we consider external forces, internal pressures and trigger points, and the UAE picture for oil and gas is now clear.

Iran has launched missile attacks targeting the UAE, and the UAE has joined partners in condemning attacks on commercial ships, oil and gas sites, and the de facto closure of Hormuz. That matters because roughly 20 million barrels a day and about a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil trade move through that narrow bottleneck. The UAE has some protection through ADNOC’s Abu Dhabi-to-

Fujairah pipeline, but recent strikes on Fujairah show that a bypass route remains unsafe.

For CEOs, the trap is to behave like a ‘speedboat’ when they run ‘oil tankers’. Tactics should change fast; strategy should not change blindly. Panicdriven strategy changes can do as much harm as the war itself. Energy systems are slow to restart. The AP notes that even if tanker traffic resumes soon, oil and gas flows will take time to recover, and damaged facilities will take longer still. UNCTAD is already warning that higher fuel, freight and insurance costs are spreading through supply chains. In construction and development, that means

three boxes: must keep, slow burn, and pause. Third, lock in backup logistics and key spare parts now, not after a missed delivery. Fourth, set clear trigger points for shutdown, restart and capital release. Fifth, speak plainly to lenders, employees, contractors and government; silence breeds rumours, and rumours raise costs.

delayed equipment and rising costs. In oil and gas, it means security, maintenance, crew welfare and cash control must come before grand new bets.

Five priorities stand out. First, protect people and critical assets before volume targets. Second, keep the core strategy, but split projects into

A company that throws away its strategy after collateral damage may pay twice: once for the hit, and again for abandoned projects and lost trust. The goal is not to look dramatic. It is to stay fit for business when normal traffic and calmer politics return.

PROCUREMENT THAT ENDURES ACROSS ASSET LIFECYCLES

HOW AIDIATION REDUCES PROCUREMENT RISK THROUGH DELIVERY-LED, WHOLE-OF-LIFE SOURCING STRATEGIES.

n Construction and Facilities Management (FM), procurement risk rarely stems from a single decision. More often, it emerges gradually as projects progress from design to delivery, from mobilisation to operation, and from early performance into steady state. Decisions made at the sourcing stage either strengthen resilience across the asset lifecycle or introduce risk that only becomes visible once contracts are live.

At Aidiation, we help clients mitigate procurement risk by focusing on sourcing delivery across the whole-of-life, rather than simply achieving contract award.

PROCUREMENT RISK IS A LIFECYCLE CHALLENGE

In complex Construction and FM environments, sourcing exercises are frequently driven by programme urgency, capital budgets, or fragmented scopes. While these pressures are familiar, risk increases when procurement strategies are not sufficiently aligned with

how assets will actually be delivered, operated, and maintained over time.

The consequences are well known: misalignment between capital delivery and operational requirements, contractors selected on short-term metrics, and contracts that prove difficult to administer once live. Over time, disconnects of this nature can adversely impact delivery performance and erode long-term value.

Aidiation addresses these challenges by embedding whole-of-life thinking into sourcing delivery from the outset.

A DELIVERY-LED, LIFECYCLEAWARE SOURCING MODEL

Aidiation’s work spans the full sourcing lifecycle, from strategy development and market engagement through to mobilisation and operational support, with a deliberate emphasis on delivery and whole-of-life outcomes.

WITHIN CONSTRUCTION AND FM, THIS TYPICALLY INCLUDES:

 Structuring sourcing strategies that reflect both capital delivery objectives and long-term operational needs.

 Evaluating suppliers based on their ability to perform across multiple lifecycle stages.

 Aligning scopes, milestones, and incentives with real delivery and maintenance workflows.

 Stress-testing sourcing decisions against lifecycle scenarios before contracts are awarded.

This delivery-led approach helps clients avoid early-phase decisions that may undermine long-term resilience, performance, and value.

Whole-of-life sourcing strengthens long-term resilience

MASTERING CONSTRUCTION PROJECT OUTCOMES

INTEGRATED TRAINING PROGRAMS SHAPING CONTRACTS, RISK, DELAY ANALYSIS, AND DISPUTE RESOLUTION EXPERTISE.

Across 2026, a series of specialist programs in Contracts Management, Dispute Resolution, Risk Allocation, and Delay Analysis will be delivered in both online and in-person formats, with London serving as the central hub. Designed as a cohesive portfolio rather than standalone courses, these programs address the critical pressure points that consistently determine the success or failure of construction projects.

At their core, the programs recognize a fundamental industry truth: project outcomes are rarely shaped by a single discipline. Instead, they are the result of interconnected decisions spanning contracts, risk, time, and commercial

strategy. How a contract is administered directly influences risk exposure. In turn, risk allocation informs how delays are interpreted and managed. Ultimately, delay analysis often becomes the evidential foundation upon which disputes are argued and resolved.

This integrated approach ensures that participants develop a holistic understanding of how these disciplines interact in realworld scenarios. Rather than learning

Contracts, risk, delay, and disputes are deeply interconnected

concepts in isolation, professionals are guided through the practical intersections that define modern project environments where legal, commercial, and operational considerations must align under pressure.

The programs are carefully sequenced to mirror the lifecycle of project decision-making, enabling experienced professionals to refine their judgment at every stage. From early contractual structuring through to dispute resolution, the curriculum emphasizes applied reasoning grounded in reality. Participants will engage with contemporary case studies, live scenarios, and the types of high-stakes decisions faced by senior project managers, commercial leaders, and legal advisors.

This focus on practical application ensures that learning translates directly into improved performance on active projects. Whether navigating complex negotiations, mitigating exposure to claims, or strengthening dispute positions, attendees will leave equipped with tools that deliver immediate value.

For individuals, the programs offer a powerful platform to advance careers in construction law and project management. Beyond technical knowledge, participants gain access to a network of like-minded professionals and industry leaders, creating opportunities for collaboration and long-term professional growth. The inclusion of recognized PDUs and CPD credits further enhances the value proposition, supporting ongoing professional development in a competitive market.

Organizations, meanwhile, stand to benefit from stronger internal capabilities. Teams equipped with advanced expertise in contract strategy, risk allocation, and delay analysis are better positioned to negotiate effectively, reduce legal exposure, and ultimately improve project profitability. In an industry where margins are

Stronger expertise leads to reduced risk and higher profitability

tight and disputes costly, this capability can provide a decisive competitive advantage.

Real-world

case studies drive practical, highimpact learning

Delivered through a blend of interactive sessions, expert-led discussions, and immersive case-based learning, the programs are designed to challenge conventional thinking and elevate strategic decision-making. Participants are encouraged to engage deeply, question assumptions, and refine their approach to complex project scenarios.

As the construction sector continues to evolve in scale and complexity, the ability to think critically about contracts, risk, delay, and dispute strategy has never been more important. These programs offer a timely opportunity to sharpen that thinking and build the expertise required to succeed in 2026 and beyond.

Professionals seeking to enhance their strategic perspective and practical capabilities are invited to take part in this comprehensive learning journey led by Abiola Aderibigbe, Course Director for the Construction & Built Environment Portfolio at Informa Connect Academy.

Behind the scenes, baggage handling is an operationally critical blend of automation and security. More than simple transit systems, they use high-speed logistics and real-time decision-making to align thousands of bags with their respective security requirements and flight departure times. In this complex cyber-physical jigsaw, one small problem can grind operations to a halt. Here, Andrei Iacobita, managing director at expert system integratorIESYS, explores the engineering, security and operational realities that underpin modern baggage handling systems (BHSs).

Globally, airports and airlines handled 5.3 billion passengers and moved commensurate volumes of checked luggage in 2024, yet 33.4 million pieces of baggage were still reported as delayed, misrouted or mishandled that year, despite ongoing investments in automation and process improvements. For system integrators working at the intersection of mechanics, software and security, these figures highlight where complexity still overwhelms infrastructure.

ENGINEERING FOR VARIABILITY

A modern BHS goes beyond the simple conveyor belts many passengers imagine. Mechanically, it comprises extensive networks of conveyor lines, carousels, vertical and horizontal diverters and, increasingly, high-speed transport solutions such as automated guided vehicles (AGVs) in fully automated environments.

Good engineering practice is critical. Abrupt stops, irregular speed changes or poorly designed transitions can quickly cause jams or damage. Therefore, layouts are deliberately designed with optimised angles and conveyor geometries, intentionally avoiding sharp ninety-degree diverters wherever possible. Automatic bag-centring systems are often integrated upstream of screening areas to ensure that luggage enters scanners in the correct position, improving scan quality and reducing the risk of obstructions.

CONTROL SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE

Mechanical performance alone is insufficient without sophisticated electronic and control systems. Electrical cabinets, frequency converters, PLCs, servo drives and field devices work together to regulate speed, spacing and routing in real time.

At the software level, supervision and control platforms act as the central nervous system

of the BHS. Routing logic and decisionmaking algorithms dynamically assign paths based on flight schedules, screening outcomes and system availability.

Every bag is tracked continuously from acceptance to make-up, with deviations detected early and corrected automatically. This tight integration between physical design and software logic is essential to avoiding lost

or delayed baggage and ensuring predictable system behaviour under peak load conditions.

SECURITY-DRIVEN DESIGN

Against this technical backdrop, security requirements are a critical part of BHS architecture. All systems operate in restrictedaccess areas and must comply with strict international and national standards governing baggage screening and traceability, such as ECAC Common Evaluation Process standards and TSA certification criteria. Integration with explosive detection systems, operator workstations and alarmresolution zones directly influences system layout, throughput and redundancy.

These requirements apply uniformly regardless of airport size. A regional airport must meet the same screening thresholds as a major international hub, despite having significantly lower passenger volumes. Therefore, BHS design is shaped as much by regulatory compliance as by operational efficiency, with security forming a structural foundation rather than a functional layer.

TAILORED TO OPERATIONAL DEMAND

There is no one-size-fits-all BHS. Each airport and, often, each terminal operates under

a unique combination of passenger flows, peak patterns, spatial constraints, security challenges and future growth requirements.

This is reflected across the two projects IESYS recently delivered at Oradea and Iași International Airports. At Oradea, IESYS delivered a turnkey BHS fully integrated with EDS screening, dual-view X-ray and SCADA-based centralised monitoring and a modular layout that improves operational flow while future-proofing the architecture for terminal expansion.

In Iași, the focus was on building BHS that maximises traceability and redundancy, with enhanced processing capacity and configurable routing that supports anticipated passenger growth. In both cases, early-stage engineering decisions, from conveyor geometry to control logic and redundant routing paths were critical to aligning operational needs with regulatory compliance.

Despite the challenge of designing bespoke systems for each BHS, the turnkey systems delivered help to unify baggage processing, maintain high throughput and integrate centralised monitoring and control via the airport’s SCADA system.

What remains invisible to passengers is a highly engineered, tightly regulated environment operating under constant pressure to deliver precision at scale. From mechanical design and control software to security compliance and lifecycle maintenance, BHSs balance throughput, reliability and safety in a way few airport functions do.

The hidden machinery keeping airport baggage moving safely and reliably

he Middle East continues to accelerate one of the world’s most ambitious airport development programs, with the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia firmly at the center of regional aviation growth.

Across the Middle East, Africa and South Asia, governments and airport operators are investing heavily in new terminals, runway capacity and digital infrastructure to meet rising passenger demand and strengthen global connectivity. A significant share of this investment is being driven by the Gulf, where aviation remains a cornerstone of national diversification strategies.

Within the MENA market, airport construction projects are already well advanced, with close to 80 per cent of total project value in pre-execution and execution phases. Saudi Arabia accounts for the largest portion of the pipeline, followed by the UAE, reinforcing the two countries’ roles as the region’s dominant aviation hubs.

Airports in both markets are also placing sustainability and operational efficiency at the core of their expansion strategies. Renewable energy systems, electric and autonomous vehicles, energy-efficient terminal designs, smart waste management and digital platforms powered by artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things are becoming standard features in new and upgraded facilities.

These priorities will be in focus at the 25th edition of the Airport Show, set to take place at Dubai World Trade Centre 12 - 14 October 2026. The event is expected to welcome more than 150 exhibitors from over 30 countries, along with over 7,000 industry professionals and 120 hosted buyers.

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, the exhibition will once again serve as the region’s leading airport industry platform. The show will feature co-located conferences including the Global Airport Leaders’ Forum, Airport

Security Middle East, the ATC Forum and the Women in Aviation Middle East Conference.

Speaking ahead of the event, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed said the industry shared a common ambition to build smarter, safer and more sustainable airports while continuously improving services for airlines and passengers. He added that Airport Show 2026 will provide an opportunity to align visions and explore practical solutions shaping the airports of the future.

May Ismail, Event Manager at RX Middle East, organiser of the Airport Show, highlighted the scale of the opportunity facing the sector. Global passenger numbers are forecast to reach 17.7 billion by 2043, while Middle East traffic alone is expected to reach 530 million passengers over the same period. She noted that the region’s large population, expanding tourism and growing airline networks are driving sustained investment in infrastructure and technology to deliver seamless and efficient passenger journeys.

UAE AND SAUDI ARABIA DOMINATE REGIONAL SPENDING

According to industry estimates, the Arabian Gulf airport development pipeline alone stands at approximately US$183 billion, reflecting extensive renovation, expansion and new-build programmes. Two projects in particular in Dubai and Jeddah –represent the largest share of airport spending across the wider Middle East and North Africa.

In the UAE, Dubai continues to advance one of the world’s most ambitious aviation developments at Al Maktoum International Airport. The mega expansion is designed to position the airport as the largest in the world, with five parallel runways, around 400 aircraft gates and a long-term target capacity of 260 million passengers annually. The total project value is estimated at AED128 billion, underscoring Dubai’s long-term commitment to maintaining its position as a global aviation and logistics hub.

Beyond Dubai, other emirates are also

strengthening their aviation infrastructure. Sharjah International Airport is progressing with its terminal expansion programme, which is expected to be completed by 2026 and will significantly enhance passenger processing capacity. Ras Al Khaimah International Airport is undertaking a major transformation project, scheduled for full completion by 2028, supporting the emirate’s fast-growing tourism and investment sectors.

In Saudi Arabia, airport development forms a central pillar of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 agenda to expand tourism, trade and international connectivity.

Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport is undergoing a major expansion valued at around US$31 billion. Once completed, the airport is expected to handle up to 114 million passengers annually, supporting both international travel and the growing volume of religious tourism.

Riyadh’s King Salman International Airport represents one of the most high-profile aviation projects in the Kingdom. The new hub is planned with six parallel runways and a long-term capacity of 185 million passengers per year, alongside facilities capable of handling 3.5 million tonnes of cargo annually. The project is designed to position Riyadh as a leading global gateway and a central hub connecting Asia, Europe and Africa.

Saudi Arabia is also expanding capacity at several other strategic locations. The Red Sea International Airport, serving the Kingdom’s flagship Red Sea tourism destination, is projected to accommodate one million passengers annually when fully completed by 2030. In Jeddah, a dedicated new Hajj and Umrah terminal is being developed to handle up to 15 million pilgrims each year, strengthening the Kingdom’s ability to manage peak seasonal demand.

Madinah’s Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport is progressing with the construction of a new domestic terminal and the renovation and expansion of its

existing international terminal, improving both capacity and passenger experience. In the southern region, the new Abha airport is designed to increase capacity tenfold, reaching 13 million passengers annually.

TECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABILITY SHAPE NEXT-GENERATION AIRPORTS

Across both the UAE and Saudi Arabia, technology is playing an increasingly critical role in airport design and operations. Digital identity, biometric processing, predictive maintenance, AI-driven security screening and real-time passenger flow management are being embedded into terminal layouts from the earliest planning stages.

At the same time, sustainability targets are influencing material selection, energy systems and operational strategies. New terminals are being designed to meet stringent environmental performance standards, while airside operations are shifting towards electric ground vehicles and smart energy management platforms.

Airport Show 2026 in Dubai will provide a dedicated platform for regional airports, government authorities, technology providers and infrastructure developers to showcase projects, source new solutions and build partnerships supporting this next phase of growth.

With Dubai and Saudi Arabia leading the region’s investment pipeline, the next decade will see both markets redefine airport scale, service quality and digital integration, strengthening their global competitiveness and setting new benchmarks for the wider aviation industry.
