TheweatherinWarwickwascoldbutitwasnotasbadaswethoughtitmightbe.WestayedattheCoachmans withmostoftheotherclubmembersandhadaverypleasantdinneratthelocalChineserestaurantwherewe mettheentiregroupaswellasNickfromSDT.
IwilldefinitelybebackasIreallyenjoyedlearningtheinterestingtrackandthecamaraderieoftheclub members.ThanksagaintoChristineandtoJoelandSDTforputtingonthedayandhopetobeabletodoit againsoon.
Therewasquiteavarietyofcarsfromourclubaswellastheothersthatweresharingthetrack.Thenumbers werestillsmallgivingplentyofspaceandtimetolearnthetrackandworkontimingandtechnique.Joeland NickandtheentireSDTteamwereveryhelpfulwiththeiradviceonthedayasweretheothermemberswho wereallwillingtopassontheirknowledge.Thetrackisquiteachallenge,tryingtomemoriseallofitstight cornersandbumps.Imanagedtokeepallfourwheelsontheblackpartsandstartedtogetintoanicerhythmas thedayworeon.

There’splentyofredevelopmentworkgoingonatQR,especiallyinpitlanewithnewgaragesandanelevated viewingplatformgoinginamongtheexistingcarports. DriversusedtheLeMansTrackonboardthenewSodiSR5kartsrecentlypurchasedfromFrance.Afterashort driversbriefing23drivershitthetrackforafewlapstofamiliarisethemselveswiththetracklayoutandthekart. Thenitwasonforyoungandoldaseachdriverchanneledtheirinnerracerinabidtogettothefrontoverfour 10lapevents.Theracingonthedayresultedinmanybattlesthought-outthefieldwitheveryonedrivingtothe bestoftheirabilitiesandwithonlyafewminorontrackincidents.
OnSundaythe5thofJunetheclubhelditsyearlyGokartchallengeandbreakfastattheKingstonPark Raceway.Thankfullythedaywasfineanddry,notlikelastyearwheneveryonewassoakedwhenracingonthe track.Firstorderofthedaywasofcourseahotbreakfastofbacon,eggsandhashbrownsaccompaniedwiththe usualcoffee,teaandjuice.ThankstotheskilledBBQchefs,VicCrennanandBrianPalmeronanexcellentjob preparingthefoodaswellasKerriThomasandMarianTaitforpurchasingallthesupplies.Thisyearwewerenot abletorunourtwohappylapsaroundtheracetracklikelastyearduetothewetandboggystateoftheentrance tothetracksoitwasstraightintodriving

Fastforwardto2020andafterCovidhitItradedmyAudiS4againstabrandnewBMWM340iXdrive,andas anewmembertotheBMWCQ,IthoughtIwouldgivethenewAWDsedanagoaroundthetrustyMtCotton HillclimbasthesoleBMWentrantintheICC.Thenewcarwentverywellindeedandknockedanothersecond offmyoldPB!ItwasenoughtobeataSubaruWRXandgivememyfirstclasswininthenewcar! Day3-320kmstotal,72kmsstaged Earlystart,notquiteiceonthewindowsbutnotfaroff.Coffeehot,handsandbraincold.Todaywasaseriesof shortstagesaroundthebackroadstothemuralcapitalofSheffield.WeshareddrivingdutiestodaysoIhada chancetogetsomebackonJeanette.However,shetakesalotmoretoscareherthanIdosoItriedtokeepit straightandsensible.BynowwearestartingtorealisewhydrivingenthusiastskeepcomingbacktotheTarga yearafteryear.
ThestartoftheTargawastobearelativelyshortdayincludingatouringstagefromLauncestontoGeorge Townandacoupleofcompetitivestagesincludingonethroughthemainstreetswhereanexpectantcrowd wasonhandtocheerallofthecompetitorsthrough.Jeanetteletitripthroughthetownstageandscaredthe livingdaylightsoutofthenavigator(me).Atthispointthenavigatorwasstartingtowonderhowhegottalked intothis.Interestingly,thelocalcouncilthoughtitwouldbeagoodideatoresurfacemostofthestreetswith loosestonesbeforetheTargasothatallofthecarswouldgetagoodstoneblastedpaintjobonthefirstday. Afteraquicklunchwestayedontowatchthetopseedshowlthroughthemainstreets,includingaslightdelay whileaLotusdecidedtorearrangethestreetlightingsystems(i.e.ploughstraightintoastreetlightpole). Otherwise,wehadagoodwarmupforwhatwastobeaheadandgotbacktothehotelearlyfordinnerand preparationforanearlystartthefollowingmorning.

AfterareasonablycomfortablerideacrosstheStrait(comfortable=notbeingthrownoutofyourbunkbythe sea)wearrivedinDevonportarounddawnandcommencedthesearchforsomethingtoeatatthattimeofday. WehadbookedthetransitacoupleofweeksearlysothatwecouldlookaroundTasmaniaandvisitfamily beforetheTargacommenced.

ThenontoLauncestonforthestartoftheTarga.WewereallhousedintheHotelGrandChancellorforthefirst fournightsoftheTourwhichwascomfortableandsociableasalotoftheotherteamswerehousedthere. Day1 ThefirstdaywasallaboutgettingthroughtheadministrationpartoftheTarga.Thatincludedprovidingallof thepaperworkrequired,gettingnumbersallocatedtoyourcarandplacingthestickersonthecar,havingthe carscrutineered,fittingtheRallysafeelectronicequipment(whichmonitorsyoureverymove),collectingthe Targaofficialcoursenotesanddoingalloftheothervehicleandequipmentcheckstoensurethateverythingis inplace.WethenhadacomprehensivebriefingfromtheorganisersandourTourleader.
WearrivedatPortMelbourneasthesunsetreadytoboardtheSpiritofTasmaniaforourjourneyacrossthe BassStrait.AsanyonewhohastravelledtoTasmaniathiswaywouldunderstandthelengthyprocessof queuingupatthedockandcrawlingalongtheloadingrampsandontotheboat.Theprocesscantakewell overanhourwhiletheyloadallofthecarsandtrucks.Ithinkthecapacityisaround500vehicles,however whenqueuedupitfeelslike5000!Wegrabbedaquicksnackattheportwhilewewaitedourturntoqueue.If youhavedonethisbeforethereisatrickingettingintotherightpositioninthequeueforthefastestloading, butIdon’tknowityet.

OurnextplannedeventwasmeanttobeaRegularityafternoonsessionatLakesideonSaturday14May, howeverunfortunately,duetotheheavyraineventwewereexperiencingatthetime,theeventhadtobe cancelled.Thereisanotheroneplannedfor Sunday2October, keepaneyeoutfornoticesclosertotheevent.
Iwastoldallattendinghadagreatdayandwereveryimpressedwithalltheupgradesthathavebeentakingplace atQRthisyear. Honoursforthedaywenttonon-BMW’swithAdamKrauelinhisbeautifulMcLarenfollowedbyAlexHaiginhis newGT4Porsche. WealsohadavisitfromtheguysfromQUTMotorsportwhobroughttheirelectriccaroutfordisplayandachatto allwhostoppedbytolook.Hopefullywewillseemoreofthematfutureevents.
ThesecondquarteroftheyearcontinuedtohavegoodattendanceatallMotorsportevents. Ourfirsteventwasround3ofourRXAutomotiveSprintSeriesinlateAprilatQldRaceway.Atotalof49people attendedofwhich33wereclubmembers.UnfortunatelyIwasnotone,beingdiagnosedwithCovidtheafternoon before.ImustgiveabigthankyoutoChristineMurphy,JohnTaitandSimonHarrexwhosteppedinliterallythe lastminutetotakeoverrunningthedayandfromwhatIhearddidafantasticjob.

Ifyouarenewtothecluborjusthaven’texperiencedoneofourtrackdaysasyet,Iwouldstronglysuggest comingouttoournexttrackdayatLakesideonFriday9September.Evenifyoudon’tentercomeoutandshare someofthecomraderywithyourfellowclubmembers,nottomentionthesightandsoundofsomeveryniceand variedmachinery.Youarewelcometohaveapassengerrideatlunchtime,togetabetterappreciationofthe track.Weconductthesewithcompetentclubmembersatnocharge.
OnSat11JunewereturnedtoMorganParkforRnd4ofourRXAutomotiveSprintSeries,hostedbythePorsche Club.Wehadanexcellentattendancewith17clubmembersattending.Beingalsoasprintroundofthe InterClubChallenge,therewereseveralattendingfromotherclubs.Thebestoftheclubmembersonthedaywas BenMalpassinhisE36M3racecarfollowedbyRomanMillerinhisveryquickM2Competition. UnfortunatelytheMorganParkhoodothatstruckmycarlastyear,resultinginareplacedengine,struckagain. Thistime,withthesparkplugchambersfullofwater,afteralltheheavyrainresultinginanenginemissfire,and droppingacylinder.Resultinginonlyafewlapsfortheday.Hint,ifyouhaveabonnetwithairslotsattheback, don’tleavethecarinrain,parkedpointinguphill.
24thMaysawsomeofourmembersheadtoMorganParkatWarwick,toattendanotheroftheSafeDrive Trainingdays.Theseareagreatalternativetooursprintdayswithinstructorsonhandtogivein-cartraining,if desired,toenhanceyourdrivingskills.Thesearenon-competitiveevents,sonotimingrecordedonthedays,you canuseyourownappstyletimingprogramsifyouwish.Beingaprivatehire,therearenospeciallicenses required.
