Welcome to Toy World’s third annual standalone Nuremberg Toy Fair preview supplement. The world’s largest Toy Fair is only three weeks away, and with around 2,500 companies exhibiting at Spielwarenmesse, planning ahead is vital.

This dedicated supplement highlights a selection of the leading toy companies that you can see in Nuremberg, and the key new ranges they’ll be launching at the show. This gives you the perfect opportunity to choose which exhibitors to add to your show schedule. More than perhaps any other show, it’s important to have a plan when you visit Nuremberg – with anything up to a 20-minute walk between halls, you want to avoid rushing from one end of the showground to the other if at all possible (although it can do wonders for your step count).

Seasoned visitors will know what to expect from the show, but if it is your first time attending, be prepared to be bowled over by the sheer breadth of companies and products on show. Thankfully, the show organisers do a wonderful job of grouping exhibitors with similar products together, to help make the whole experience just that little bit smoother for visitors. So, whatever product category for which you are looking to source new lines, you will find a huge choice of suppliers from across the globe. It can be an exhausting trip, but is always exhilarating.

Rofu means business (and play)

Three weeks before Christmas, Toy World sat down with Michael Edl, managing director of Purchasing and Marketing at Rofu, to learn more about the German toy retailer and hear about how the year has been for the business, before looking ahead to 2026.

Can you tell our readers a bit about Rofu as a business?

We carry a variety of categories, such as Christmas decorations, seasonal products and back-to-school.

However, toys is our largest category and very much part of our DNA. When you step inside our stores, consumers immediately recognise our product assortment and strong value proposition. In addition, we utilise online as a way of expanding our reach with consumers – although for us this is very much an add-on, as we like to prioritise our in-person stores. Online, there might be a small selection of SKUs that you can’t buy in every store, because we customise each location based on its size. Almost every Rofu store will be different to one that you’ve visited previously.

Across our 105 stores, we have about 90 different models. One location might have more fashion dolls, while another might have more function dolls, or a focus on DIY or board games. We customise our stores based on a variety of factors, including their total area, the number of competitors nearby, their location and the local consumer demographic. The average size of our stores is 800 m2, although we have stores that start at 500 m2 - and some go up to 2000 m2.

As a business, we want each branch of Rofu to look like a specialist independent toy retailer, whether that’s in a larger or smaller format store. When you walk into our stores, rather than seeing product ranged by brand name, it’s ranged by category. So, for example, instead of looking at five shelves of Barbie, you are looking at our whole fashion doll selection. We typically try to understand the customer mindset and what they are looking for.

We believe that using our own perspective and expert knowledge is the best way to gain customer engagement.

How has 2025 been for toy sales in Germany?

A recent press release from the German Toy Association suggests that business has been smooth and the market is up 3%. However, in reality, a large part of this increase is driven by the likes of Pokémon and Lego.

If you take away those brands, the market is probably declining around -4%. Around Black Friday and the beginning of December, everyone was worried about the volume of liquidated inventory, which has a huge effect on pricing. I have never experienced this deep level of discounting before, and I’ve been trading in toys for 30 years.

In toys, we deal with a very broad target demographic – it goes from 0 to 99! Our main business nowadays is younger kids who are still looking for toys underneath the Christmas tree. There’s also now a huge opportunity across Kidults and the collector base – that’s been one of the biggest shifts in the market in recent years. If you look at the overall numbers, it looks like the market is still doing reasonably well, however, the truth is that we’re effectively buying sales, as we’re virtually liquidating inventory. This is something that has never happened in the German market before.

Have there been any standout ranges or categories this year?

Plush has performed extremely well within a wide range of assortments. Board games are still stable, and action figures are doing okay. Lego’s Kidult ranges have been another highlight, while system play like Playmobil is looking steady and consistent.

There’s a perception that Germany is a very traditional market. Do you think this is changing?

At one point, licences were not making the same number of shares in the German market. Now, it’s reaching around 30% of total sales, and as a business, you need to have an element of licensing in your product mix. I am slightly concerned that we now put too much pressure on entertainment. The window that we have to properly take advantage of these licences is getting increasingly short. It’s hard to run a licence that is profitable during these time frames. You also need to keep the iron hot, and sometimes there can be such a delay for products coming out that this is difficult to do.

How is the Christmas period going so far?

Do you have any predictions on how it’ll turn out?

I believe it will be a flat Christmas against last year.

When we look at the numbers without Pokémon and Lego, I think we should be happy if it’s flat; every percentage point above that will be worth celebrating.

As we come closer to Christmas, puzzles and board games will start to come into their own - they always gain popularity at this time of year.

We saw sales start to pick up one week before Black Friday. If it’s the same as the last couple of years, based on high-value items, we’ll see strong shopping on Black Friday, and then there will be a lag. However, averagepriced products will be purchased more after Black Friday. This year, we’ve had the best period we can have, starting from 1st December with the peak going into that first weekend. The following week, I predict it will be slightly flat, and then the week before Christmas it will blow up. Going into the week of Christmas, it will be busier than ever.

How has discounting impacted Rofu this year?

At the beginning of November, Action, the discount

retailer, sent out a 188-page catalogue, based on prices just below €10. This is an approach which is completely disrupting the price ranges in each category. The customer mindset is evolving; when they’re focused on specific products and licences, they are looking at where they can get it at the best value. Everyone was focused on Black Friday to get the maximum discounts. Now we’re past that, stock availability becomes a key factor.

Price wise, the German market is just as sensitive as the UK these days – in some cases, arguably more so. Consumers can buy product in a discount format with Aldi, Lidl and Action, and they can buy it from toy specialists like Smyths and Rofu. There is a lot of pressure to deliver the best products at the best value.

What impact do online retailers like Amazon have on physical retailers in Germany?

A lot of brand suppliers are going to refuse to work with Amazon here in Germany, as they know they’re getting too much pressure on complicity and pricing. For that reason, it looks like Amazon is not affecting the market too heavily anymore. We do have some competition from online retailers, but it’s not like the market competition we have with Action, when they’re sending out Christmas flyers and cutting prices up to 30-40% – this is a totally different direction. In the UK, the market seems to be much more online-focused than Germany. In the end, we

Kidult is an area that we’ve been focusing on, but we’re looking at it from a different direction – at store level. Everyone is talking about Kidults, and there’s a huge disparity between what is suitable online versus what works in-store. In-store, we are looking at having a specific Kidult/tween area, to draw their attention when they first walk in. We have a blueprint of how we are planning to make everything look seamless. One option is building up an area called Fan Zone, which will typically be focused on the collector space. Also, in January, we will be dropping vending machines into our stores like Pop Mart did in the UK. When introducing something like a vending machine, you need to be able to control the customer setting. You don’t want them only looking at the machines and ignoring the rest of the store. We’re trying to keep our customers inside the store through different avenues.

What are your thoughts about 2026? What trade shows will you be attending?

In addition to continuing to expand our presence in Germany, we’re potentially looking across our borders.

This includes Luxembourg and Austria, as well as eastern European countries like Slovenia and Macedonia, as they have huge opportunities in the kids’ market.

In 2026, we are planning to get behind a wide range of themes and licences based on different categories.

We start the year with Super Mario, before getting into Star Wars with Grogu and then the new Minions film.

We’re also dropping in Formula 1 and looking at the next chapter of Marvel Doctor Doom.

Nuremberg is still a milestone for us, and as a toy specialist, you have to be there. As Rofu attended the LA Previews, I won’t be revisiting stands or exhibitors that I saw there – I want to avoid double visits and really maximise the show.

Everything is already set up and on track for us for Christmas 2026, so Nuremberg will be good for finding potential new contacts, sharing more details or wrapping up notes from previous showcases. From our perspective, it’s essential to be there, and we will need to be at the show for the whole time. Even then, we can’t get through all the halls and stands available.

Ahead of Nuremberg Toy Fair, Toy World’s Caroline Tonks catches up with Christian Ulrich, spokesperson and member of the Executive Board at Spielwarenmesse eG, to give readers some insight into this year’s landmark anniversary show, the fair’s heritage and its future.

n 2026, Spielwarenmesse is set to return to Messezentrum Nürnberg from Tuesday 27th to Saturday 31st January for its 75th edition, transforming the exhibition centre into a unique showroom for the international toy community.

From Halls 1 to 12.2, stands are overflowing with new product, bringing together companies and visitors from across the globe into one big melting pot of toy innovation, where they will explore the latest ranges, place orders and catch up with colleagues and friends.

Last year’s show was hailed a major success. The final figures showed that there was a total of 2,362 exhibitors from 71 countries in attendance, making the total area of the show 175,000 m2 . Over the duration of the show, 57,500 visitors from 126 countries graced the halls, exploring everything on display for the year ahead.

When looking at the fair’s floor plan, each hall is carefully curated to make it simpler to navigate and cater to specific categories within the industry. From the likes of Lifestyle Products and Dolls/Soft Toys in Halls 1 and 3C, Technical and Educational Toys in Halls 2, 4, 4A, 5 and 6, and Multi-Product Groups in Halls 11, 11.1, 12 and 12.2, there’s so much to discover - and never a dull moment for visitors walking through this show.

Despite 2025 marking 75 years of Spielwarenmesse eG, the real celebrations will begin at the 2026 show as a result of previous iterations being on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Over the course of Nuremberg Toy Fair, there

will be a variety of special anniversary highlights taking place. An exhibition with interactive elements, located in front of the centrally positioned Entrance Mitte, will offer insights into the history of Spielwarenmesse and showcase its key milestones: from rapid international expansion and the move to the exhibition centre, to numerous world premieres of products.

The ongoing success story includes continuous digitalisation and the strengthening of the fair’s strong networking reputation under the current Executive Board – Christian Ulrich, Florian Hess and Jens Pflüger. Across the entire exhibition grounds, numerous exhibitors will join in the celebrations with their own activities, offering everything from musical performances and creative photo spots to exclusive product testing areas. Since the show’s inception, 15 exhibitors have remained a firm part of Spielwarenmesse, and will be receiving special recognition for this dedication. Franz Schneider, J.G. Schrödel, Ravensburger Verlag and Sieper are just some of the companies on this list who have returned year after year.

together all exhibitors on the opening day of the fair, whilst the RedNight on the evening of the 29th January will encourage networking among industry colleagues with atmospheric stand parties, as well as a grand fireworks display in the Messepark.

Some long-standing exhibitors will also be hosting anniversary celebrations of their own. John GmbH will be celebrating several milestones at the show. Alongside its 100-year anniversary, this will also be the company’s 70th Nuremberg Toy Fair, and it will be commemorating 50 years of being a Disney licensee. John GmbH will be showcasing all of this on its stand, with an exhibition of product from the 1970s, a banner showcasing family pictures and the history of the company, as well as a banner showcasing its history with Disney. During RedNight, attendees are welcome to stop by the stand and raise a glass to toast these anniversaries. Casdon will be celebrating its 80th anniversary – marking the milestone with a collaboration with a brand-new licence, The Magnum Ice Cream Company. Its first-ever range of licensed ice cream toys, set for launch in summer 2026, will be making its debut at the show.

The anniversary of Spielwarenmesse will be visible throughout ToyCity Nuremberg. Up-to-date information on all events can be found in the fair’s app and website.

Visitors to the fair can, for example, frame their photos with an exclusive 75-year anniversary design and share their excitement for the biggest industry celebration of the year.

Christian Ulrich comments: “The 75th anniversary is a milestone that extends far beyond our own organisation.

It is the expression of the close ties and continuous change in an industry that has repeatedly reinvented itself since 1950. For us as a team, it is a great pleasure to continue writing this success story together with the international toy community and to offer the industry a platform for innovation, networking and inspiration.”

With its long heritage as a trade fair, the team is keen to balance honouring this extensive lineage with staying relevant and forward-looking for today’s toy market. “Through intensive dialogue with the industry, we identify new developments at an early stage and continuously adapt our trade fair concept. This is reflected, for example, in the introduction of innovative product groups, the expansion of digital offerings and

creating special experiences in a variety of formats.”

The over-arching goal of the show is to create an environment for industry and trade that enables efficient networking and successful business deals. In this way, Spielwarenmesse continues to be a central meeting point for established market players, ambitious newcomers and everyone who brings movement to the industry.

For the anniversary edition, visitors can expect plenty of innovation to keep the show fresh and up to date.

Christian explains: “We have optimised the hall structure to make both orientation and networking opportunities easier. For example, the School Supplies, Stationery and Creative Design area is now located in Hall 2 and part of Hall 4. In Hall 2, this area has been specifically combined with the Technical Toys, Educational Toys, Action Toys category to create synergies. The Startup Area and New Product Gallery in Hall 3A offer space for innovations, and the Sports, Leisure, Outdoor activity area in Hall 7A invites visitors to try out pickleball. Special displays such as Toys for Kidults and ToyTrends in the central entrance area provide additional highlights.”

Spielwarenmesse eG has once again seen enormous interest from exhibitors this year, with most of the halls already fully booked. Thanks to optimised hall occupancy, there has been the capacity to open up additional spaces, allowing a multitude of new opportunities for growth, particularly for the product groups Baby and Infant Articles, Lifestyle Products and Sports, Leisure, Outdoor. According to Christian, this shows how attractive and dynamic the trade fair is becoming. At the same time, the team behind the show is laying the foundation for continuing to respond flexibly to the needs of the industry and new market trends in the future.

International participation is impressive again this year, reflecting the global appeal of the Nuremberg Toy Fair. For the 75th edition of the show, there will be over 10 international pavilions presenting more than 200 companies – proof of the enormous diversity and international networking opportunity provided by the event. The UK will be represented with its own pavilion, curated as ever by Stuart Whitehill and his team at the Overseas Fairs Division of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerece.

“The strong presence of a wide variety of nations once again proves that this event represents the key meeting

point for the global industry,” states Christian. “New this year, for example, are exhibitors from Luxembourg, New Zealand, and Uruguay.”

To make this mass-scale show easier to handle, Spielwarenmesse is taking the necessary steps to help exhibitors maximise their ROI at the fair. “We support our exhibitors in many ways to maximise their trade fair success,” says Christian. “In the run-up to the fair, we offer targeted webinars to help them with their preparations for the show. On our Spielwarenmesse Digital platform, companies can present their profile, product images and videos, as well as brand and licence entries, and use integrated communication tools to get in touch with interested parties directly.

One for Fun has so many fabulous new things to see, fantastic new ranges and line extensions across our impulse and sensory ranges and a stand packed with winners.

Personally, I would single out our F1 range which has been such a best-selling smash over the last few years. The next series of Formula One: Drive to Survive from Netflix is due to air in the spring and the popularity of F1 continues to rise with families and collectors alike.

This year, as usual, we will also have access to the Maisto and Bburago stand to be able to show our buyers all the new ranges for 2026. International Sales manager, Outset Media and Cheatwell Games Nuremberg is one of my favourite trade fairs and places to visit. The one thing that you should not miss when in Nuremberg is wandering around the city itself. There is something so magical about this beautiful Bavarian city and if we are lucky enough to have some snow, it makes the city even more magical. I remember that it snowed on my first year to Nuremberg. I woke up on my first morning to thick snow and I have loved the city ever since.

The show is still one of our busiest in the calendar and it is so nice to see people off the back of Q4, where everyone is looking forward to a new year ahead and they are excited to see what’s new. Personally, I think the must-see at the show is Hall 10 with all the games, however, I try to make time to go to the model hall, it is pretty spectacular and one not to miss.

The category has moved from being niche to a core growth engine globally, and we’re leaning into it with some genuinely differentiated IP and product that pushes well beyond what people expect from Zuru. It’s bold, it’s creative and it’s going to be a major part of our story going forward.

Spielwarenmesse’s ToyTrends showcase both current and emerging trends that retailers should take note of to stay ahead in the industry. The products on display range from familiar favourites you may already know or even own, to surprising, one-of-a-kind finds you never realised existed. Exploring this area is fascinating, and many of the toys on show tie directly into discussions at the Toy Business Forum, providing valuable context and insight.

For a recommendation beyond the fair, after a long day discovering everything Spielwarenmesse has to offer, make sure to visit Kuhmuhne for an amazing pizza and cocktail.

Nuremberg 2026 is a real milestone moment for me. Much of 2025 has been spent building strong partnerships, refining our product lines and collaborating closely with our US team.

First up is the recently announced launch of Armorsaurs, an exciting new content and toy line set to dominate the action figure market in 2026. The all-new Armorsaurs follows a team of teen pilots and their armoured dinosaurs, who are humanity’s last line of defence against an advanced alien race intent on returning to Earth to replenish their army of prehistoric fighting dinosaurs. Hall 10, Stand C-28 Over the past four decades, Cheatwell Games has watched families grow up and friendships form over its games. Now, to mark its 40th anniversary, it aims to do the same for years to come, with many new releases being added to the market such as Buzzword, Cat Earth, Guildlands, Flora Funga and over 40 new Cobble Hill puzzles.

In Buzzword, the game starts as the buzz word is announced. Teams must guess 10 clues before the time runs out, and every answer must contain the buzz word. In each team, one team member will give hints while the rest shout out answers. Players must get them right to score, and each incorrect answer gives the opposing team a chance to steal points.

Cat Earth is a fast-paced board game with a comic conspiracy-theory twist. The game includes cats who believe the Earth is flat, not round, and are willing to prove it by knocking items off the edge of the world. Players take turns playing movement cards to send the giant cats bounding across the board, toppling rival houses off the edge of the Earth. Each time the deck runs out, another cat joins the fun. The last player with houses still standing claims victory.

In Guildlands, players choose their Guild and lay their tiles to rebuild a city after a dragon assault leaves the realm of Thornshire in ruins.

Players are tasked with restoring the capital of their Guild to its former glory after the Queen calls upon them. Those playing must strategically lay tiles to rebuild roads, markets, gardens and defences, and deploy workers to claim key locations, block opponents and control the flow of the city. Once gold is spent, players can gain extra actions and turn the tide in their favour.

Flora Funga features two nature-inspired games in one box with a magnetic wraparound board. In Flora, dandelions sprout, bloom and scatter as shifting winds reshape the landscape and players race to complete mission cards. In Funga, mushrooms form intricate patterns as players place, connect and disrupt using clever moves and powers to score the most points.

Visitors to its stand will experience the company’s most exciting year yet featuring new product launches and expanded retail partnerships.

2025 was a milestone year for The Desi Doll Company. It celebrated three successful years in Selfridges across London, Birmingham, Manchester and online, marking a continued rise in demand for faith-based educational toys in mainstream retail. Its brand presence also expanded into The Entertainer, Fenwick and Very UK, bringing faith-inspired play into even more high street stores. These achievements underscore a powerful shift that Islamic toys are not just niche items, but rather meaningful, inclusive products valued by families across the UK and globally.

With the global Muslim market valued at $2.2t, The Desi Doll Company continues its mission to make Islamic toys visible and accessible worldwide.
